Amazon Go opened three locations in New York City - I went to the downtown location and shopped there for the first time. You download the Amazon Go app, sign in, scan the QR code, and you're in. You literally just grab whatever items you want and walk out, and you're automagically (see what I did there) charged for each and every item you take. It's insane how seamless the whole experience is.
Original Amazon Go promo video: • Introducing Amazon Go ...
These are perfect for airports, sometimes I get discouraged to buy anything due to the checkout lines.
Genuis idea
Great idea
Bernardo Escobedo that would be the perfect scenario for this concept!
And you always have to show your boarding pass at the airport before you buy anything
Seeing you in Casey’s old studio is quite odd i must say!
Jeremy Dagenais no way! I didn’t even realise! 🙄
I went for the opening week in Seattle. It definitely feels like you’re stealing when you walk out.
i’m gonna forget to pay when i go to a regular store after this one😂
I think you can actually steal. in linus video which was a while ago, you could say that you didnt took an item that they charged you and then they give a refund. so yeah you can steal

10 dollars salad! Thank god I live in Europe :) Same box cost about 2 euros.
10 dollars is crazy for that, 3 gbp for the sushi.... max

@@samsheffer thank you, uncle Sam :)
@@samsheffer I love NY because I recorded like that in my town I'd have people looking at me like I was crazy, NY noone gives a hoot 💯
yeah but America
So pretty much a walk in vending machine 😂.
Horn and hardart 2019
That sounds like a dream to me!
A K you summed it up perfectly! ✋
Well as you said its small, its amazon “Go” like on the go with breakfasts drinks lunch dinner, not everyday items
now we have big brother connivence stores. George Orwell warned us.
Richard Torcato right
My main question is what would happen if your card get declined or didn’t work for some reason.
great question
It s just like Uber, if there is no money it will not let you shop again until you pay for the last shopping
The people buying outway the stealing.
Andrei Danila still.. you understand how is it for people to exploit this. They will be using a new amazon account every time and you can technically grab as many things as you like even if your card has 1 dollar in it.
It won't let you leave and it alerts the staff at the entrance. The gate opens only if you're good to go.
Great job. I love when you do videos that give a look at life in NYC.
Expected him to start the video with, "I'm here with my friend, Jeff Bezos..." 😂
Ok, cool, but what if you grab something and after that, before leaving the shop you change your mind and put it back? Will it register in app and you will have to pay for that or no?
It tracks that you put it back.
Good question 🤔
@@ryannadler2617 Cool, thanks
yep, it tracks everything - if you change your mind, it knows :)
I've never even had to use the dispute function in the app at my location which is there if it does mess up.
rest in peace to the millions of jobs which come with supermarkets
In it
Well they have 5-10 people working stocking just no cashiers
@@METALMAN4Wii and the people in the back preparing the fresh food
@@tracy_en6372 That might be made off site like 7-11 does?
@@METALMAN4Wii if you watch most videos, in one of them, one of the employees said they are in the back making the food as it goesm
Happy for you to be in the new studio space but also kind of sad to see the old Casey stuff gone! Onwards and upwards Sam!
From mostly cloudy & chilly Ireland! ☘️💪🏽👀👍🏽☘️
It's basically a walk-in vending machine. Pretty awesome concept. Nice vid @Sam Sheffer
I was looking at prices while you were walking around and being from Kansas that is so expensive to me you can get a two litter for a little over a $1!
Not that a shopping experience should be anything special but this store feels quite soulless in both senses of the word. Great coverage though Sam!
I cannot wait for all grocery stores to be like this. Fire content again Sam!🤘
You shouldn't imagine how many people will be unemployment
@@mrbro1339 Not too many, you still need staff to re-stock shelves, make stuff in the bakery and be on-hand to answer questions.
@@mrbro1339 because a cashier has such a fulfilling job? Progress is unevitable. If you settle for things that are easy and not useful to others......just stop complaining and start to work on your mindset.
What you should imagine is how you are going to buy food when these companies ban you from using their stores....Dont believe me check out Laura Loomer.
No one puts more informative and succinct videos together than Sam Sheffer! Great video!
I was able to go to the Seattle store when it was the only one, but I wish I was able to spend more time to really check it out. I was dropped off and just grabbed a soda as my family drove around the block, was inside for less than 5 minutes. That store had a small dining are outside the turnstyle with some condiments etc. That this store doesn't seem to have.
I love your videos! This is really cool, I may have to stop by...
so Amazon is training their AI software using these toy grocery stores
Fehmi S absolutely. All those cameras on the ceiling are eyes 👀
Disguising cool grocery shopping with facial recognition software
Also understanding consumer behavior .it's will help to influence our mind more efficiently 🤔
Did the dozens of cameras and sensors above you turn you off from your shopping experience?? I feel like it wouldn’t feel intrusive but some people may feel different.
I think that's why they are right above you out of sight, most shops have lots of cameras these days. Privacy is a massive thing at the moment 👍
@@ZanderRound yea, you dont really notice them unless you look up, but they're definitely there
Sam Sheffer another great video!! Thanks again Sam!
Best tech channel on CZcams. Sam is well rounded. He’s not focused on specs specs SPECS. He applies it to lifestyle like a real person would. Talks about everything interesting without being boring. Good personality, explanation and he’s a Hypebeast like me. Can relate to this guy on many levels. Big UPS get this guy to 1 mill subs
This technology is a crazy step forward in tracking and collecting data about what people buy (they identify you when you go in), how much time people spend inside the shop, at what time they go shopping, what items or isles catch the attention of the eyes of the consumer more than others (the layout of the isles and the display of products can be changed accordingly).
All this data they collect will be used to improve the shopping experience and to make it better and more and more personalized. For example if they know that you usually buy a certain product they’ll send you a notification on your phone or through Alexa (another huge tool used to collect data from you...) telling you to come to the store because that product is now restocked or has a discount. Just an example.
This , combined with Whole Foods, will make Amazon the world leader of this field (they’re already the best in e-commerce)
The tracking that happenss in the store is solely based on your appereance right? Would be interesting to see this during winter .. I mean if two people are wearing the same hoodie and the tracker confuses them imagine going back home and looking at your receipt with stuff you never even touched. And may I suggest the idea of this not happening accidentally.
Gotta be more then just that. I am pretty sure it will know it's 2 different people based off the app
DJ Blue yeah for sure but what if the sensors confuse them while they’re shopping.. I know they are probably the most sophisticated sensors in the world but still imagine when these shops start to get very crowded and suddenly the two similar people pass by each other and just like that they can get confused from each other.
Oh man, I did not know they opened in NYC...this is fascinating to me
so you can't change your mind at the checkout?
Love the idea of this, perfect for blokes who dont want to fuck about shopping, just want to get in and out and get on with their day 👍💯
Honestly a lot of it looks decently priced. I think it said $1.50 for a bagel and $1.25 for a Luna bar? $15.99 for that meal prep kit tho is ridiculous.
Looks dope Sam! Glad to see your face in my feed!
Im happy Sam took Casey’s studio love both of these guys.
Oh dang! I definitely need to be watching your channel a bit more. I didn't realize you're all the way up to 250k subscribers now! I remember when you had like literally none and you were promoting it on Periscope. Ah i miss the scope days
Congrats on your success!
Amazon should market this at college campuses seeing how most students are always on the go
I've been a fan of yours since the Verge days and try to watch all your videos. This is my favourite by a long way. Great flow, very informative and the perfect length too. 👌🏻
Bring your own bag of lays put it on the shelf and see if it gives your account money haha
hahaha
All lecroys are $1 so you can’t say that it’s cheaper in there than other places
i am curious what do they do for wheel chair users? that gateway looks way to small for a wheel chair? was there a wheel chair gate somewhere?
The "these prices are good for Manhattan" mentions are funny. That's basically the same prices we pay in Western Canada.
hey sam, just wanted to see if you’ll be doing a dedicated video about the apple event coming up and maybe even lining up for the launch of the new products? love this video and looking forward to the next!
Awesome video! I cannot help but to see the other half of his studio in the background still. Really enjoy the fact it’s being put to fantastic videos.
Pretty cool, great job Sam
interesting , but in France people will shout them out, unfortunatly. the question mark is if you grab a bottle put it in the bag and before leaving the shop you decide to put back on the shelve and grab something else, would you be taxed for both items ? of do the system recognized the difference?
Fun fact he is not Sam Sheffer I know Sam, he can't just see LaCroix and ignore it!!
This one is like if you are on the road and just stop to get gas and something to snack on while you’re on the road trip
Europeans be like, "thats a regular sized store"
No for Europe that's not a regular sized store
Thanks Sam! Gotta check it out. I work right there and never been down there.
$1.89 for the lays! Same packet costs 0.30 in India.
The average salary in India is 300 dollars. It's 3200 in the USA.
It's $1.89 here in Canada too.
@@andrerosa6074 That's a very misleading number. $3,200 month is $20/hr. If it's $3,200 take home it would be $24/hr. Well above the true number.
@@PlanBrewski in New York your gonna need way more than 20$ an hour to live. In Philadelphia its 19$ and some change an hour to be able to live. If not you living at home with ya folks.
@@TheNumbasign2 Oh absolutely, but he national minimum is $7.50. I'm just saying the "adverage" is greatly exaggerated by wealth gap.
I'm still unsure whether it's a good thing Amazon will be controlling both the brick and click market place
1 company should not have that much control but i think it's to late just gotta accept it
pretty rad . i cant wait till they expand to more locations .
I've been to one of the SF stores. Great mini market. Got some redbull, chips and candy. Pretty simple to setup the app and get going with it.
You don't need that much sour patch kids? @sam remember when I gave you and Peter M, and Nigel S a bag of sour patch kids at that restaurant in Milwaukee? Thanks for signing my laptop then homie! Stoked for your continued success.
Thats pretty sweet. I can see these catching on fairly quick.
Can’t wait for one to come to Orlando. Great vid Sam
There's a supermarket in Israel that allowing you shop exactly like that but without all this cameras and Sensors. Instead they Weigh the cart and and know what you bought
I wonder if there is a max capacity. Not for fire marshal reasons but the amount space needed between people for the cameras to be able to correctly identify the person and the item they are putting in their bag. Are there cameras on the shelves as well?
Imagine shopping there for a year, then going to a regular shop and forgeting you have to pay.
There are 2 kind of people in this world....
1. Who gives a rating 5/5
2. Who gives a rating 10/10.
Sam’s the first kind which one are you?
Second
Do you really think we could see the large grocery stores doing this in the future? We have a 7/11 in Melbourne that has a trial with this technology
This is the future
there aren't any bodega cats tho
Just this Thursday I have read a newspaper that in China is using your face value to pay your goods. Not using your phone with QR code. It is connected to your bank account.
one question if you go in with work friend or partner do they have to have the app and be signed up to amazon just to get in the door i'm assuming yes , so then is their a waiting area at front of store for family and friends or they just wait in the sidewalk blocking traffic ?
There's a Sam's Club back in my home town in Arkansas that is the same and the only difference is that you scan each of your items with the Sam's Club app. But you don't have to check out at a register. Just push your cart out
whats stopping you from not scanning an item
Well ..the problem was the queue and not the people. With this we have actually cut down the jobs .The problem is when we introduce the technology we forget about the people and imagine if once everything is automated we just require few people for maintenance of the software
This will be the new excuse for people walking out from regular stores.
‘Oh sorry, I total forgot this is not an Amazon go store’ 😅
Awesome, Thank you!!
I'm just wondering what about bugs?? If two people stand next to each other and pick up something at the same time..
If a kid enters with it's parents app..?
Very cool! I’ve been eager to check it out.
Shelves look pretty bare in some areas. I think this could cause shoplifting in other stores when you forget you are not in an Amazon store and just walk out with your goods 😬
I like the easiness of it, the prices but not the data part where they know every thing about you ( the time that you spent in the store freaks me out!! )
I went to this one a few months back for the first time. I had to ask two or three times just to be sure I understood I could just go, I just couldn't wrap my brain around it.
So it does all the tracking visually? I'd love to see a solid magician in there! I wonder how hard that is to fool.
Other than the sensors, are there any special RFID labels on the items you pickup?
not that i know of!
RFID labels is the technique used in some stores like this in China
Shot on Osmo Pocket? I see some focus hunting from time to time.
heh 1DX Mark II on a Ronin S!
Sam Sheffer omg!!! I see Osmo pocket wherever I look then =)
Would be nice to have near work, quick snack during break. Hope they start rolling out in Texas soon.
Video was cool but what if you choose not to pay!
Ik they have Amazon account linked ,but still wanna ask tho
Ps- also if your card did not work for some reason
They have one of these in LA and it’s has way more different stuff like toys and technology
This mark up is crazy.
Super cool video Sam 🙌🏼 I shall go to Amazon Go 🤓
Is the cameras tracking what you take or simply the exit scanners scanning the qr codes on the back of the items in your bag upon exit?
Looks rad! Can’t wait until they have one in Columbus Ohio. Most likely on the Ohio State Campus.
What happens when a mum or dad goes in to the shop with a child the parents are signed up but their kid is not the kid then pick up something with out the parent knowing and then they walk out ?¿ ( you can’t really leave your kid out side)
Wow - Can't wait to see these in more locations..
what if when you grb a small item and you place them perfectly aligned and facing upwards to the camera will it see both even though it might look as if youre taking one ? for example a choco bar thats small and you grab two but from deeper in so camera above doesnt see and then when you pull out its perfectly horizontal ... bit of a long shot but i dont even have one in the uk but if i can help US people i might as well haha
I went to an amazon go store in seattle. Some things were very expensive, and others, like 1.5 LITERS of water was only 79 cents
Wow 79 cents for water here was me thinking getting it for free was a great deal.
It’s Theo’s chocolate which is a chocolate from Seattle!
What if you try to sneak 2 protein bars together which maybe looks like one bar to the cameras?
Honestly I think this would be great applied to hygiene products and medications. Not having to interact with others when buying truly personal items.
interesting to know if it still works but if you get someone else to pass you the item it bills the person who took it off the shelf. So be careful and sadly dont help people out
It's a convience store but with nicer stuff. Reminds me of a WAWA kinda as far as the selection is concerned. Good video!
Great video Sam. Are we required to load cash in amazon wallet or it just works with added credit card ?
I think that it just charges to your amazon account and charges your primary credit/debit card
Wow, thats amazing project! I wish to have more stores like that. Whats a opening hours of that store? its 24/7?
How you liking the new studio?
I wonder if they will ever make an Amazon go that is the size of a normal store. I’m also curious if they would ever make a store for there most popular amazon items (not food or drink)
they need to add apple wallet integration for that QR code
If I went often I would just print it as a sticker and put it on my phone. Assuming it's not unique every time which it possibly is.
Thank you so much for making this video It's really helpful and has lots of uses.
Plastic. Plastic and more plastic.....give me farmers markets any day before another app
What will happen if you get a pack of snacks, eat half of it, and place it back
In the video you showed the items with prices on your phone the Amazon go app. Now how will you pay?
Great video man!
I wonder what happens if you pick an item that was put back in the wrong shelf.
