- Celebrated Chicago photographer King Ganaway, an African-American, died in 1944 in anonymity. Now his white descendants are reclaiming him and trying to recover his lost work. Read the print story here: t.co/RKKjlDEL3r (John Owens/Chicago Tribune)
Tears. Im black and My grandfather is white and was disowned by his family. He died in 93 and we still can't find who his actual parents and family are. Rip Birthel Simpkins!
I'm so sorry, but G-d bless you for caring and looking beyond race. Race is only a big deal when people make it a big deal.
If the words "white" and "black" were not in this title, then this video probably wouldn't even get that many views. Let's just be Americans.
Do this gene ancestry testing and you probably can find out something
That is so sad. I’m so sorry he was disowned. No one should feel what he went through. We are human and we live under the same sky. Wish people would stop discriminating based on someone’s race. We all are human and have more things in common than differences
Sad for you, hopefully you’ll find out the information you seek
I have an entire maternal family line I’ll never know... it’s so sad and my family still bears the trauma
Peace and blessings to you ❤️🧡
Everbody started out black .... have a great day
Kkkkkkki
Amen
thats a scientific fact I recently found out. apparently, the first human came from africa and his descendants emigrated and evolved as a result of enviromental factors
@Nature who care a racist is going to be racist no matter what
Not if you were born somewhere cold and cloudy.
There is so much mixed races within a family that people don’t realize!!! We need to live in peace and accept everyone! That’s the lesson. We don’t even really know what we are.
NAILED IT! Thank You!
Yess you nailed this one with just 1 blow.
We are an interracial family. You accept and love each other for who we are. Yes you are right.
yeah for some of us the race mixture not even that distant. Found out my great grandmother's great grandfather( my 4th great grandfather) dad was a white man. The thought that my great grandmother share the same amount of DNA with me as a white man can is pretty interesting. She lived long enough to meet me to. Her great grandfather lived long enough to meet her. Did hear my great grandmother was really lightskinned so I expected there was probably some mixture going on. I guess i would share about 1% of my DNA with him.
So true.
This is how I felt when I found out about my great grandfather Poppa Tom. He was a Caucasian Irish man. I have two grandsons who look just like him and is lighter than the other grandchildren. My son thought his son wasn't his, although he looks just like him, he did the dna test to prove he was. A year later our Caucasian family started appearing and there's a photo of Poppa Tom that looks just like my grandsons. If you haven't done so, do your Ancestry. I have found over 100 family members who all carry the stories and legacies of what I knew or heard growing up. From Ireland, Honduras, Belize and Cameroon and much more in between. I love being the new record keeper.
@KORA SADLER that's awesome!! I can go back to my great- grandmother who was 💯% Cherokee on my dad's side . I'm definitely going to get a DNA test to find out more!
That’s beautiful 🤩
Black is dominant my sister!
@@blockbeater28 No it's not all races are equal
@@aandrewa4238 Explain yourself I have facts soooo…..
It's sad that this is considered a "newsworthy" story mostly because Mr. Ganaway was black and his white ancestors accepted him. Accepting the people in your own family shouldn't be such a big deal but sadly because of this country's terrible racial history, it is.
His white descendants, not ancestors. And this is a lot more common than you think, for a lot longer than you think.
Exactly, why is this news!
I consider this newsworthy because I never knew about this man and his accomplishments for his time. That is what’s newsworthy.
@Paul Hardrick it was not for you…
This is a sign of healing.
We, all of us, need to heal from this traumatic history.
“That’s when I learned of the whole black thing” 🤣🤣🤣
He said a mouthful lol
Tim Fredericks actually looks like his great grandfather in the face structure. Same ears too.
TechnoTroubadour he also had similar features to the black woman who was also a descendant. 2:31
Yes they put a lot of cream in the coffee over the years in fact it looks like it's all cream now
He has a clearly black nose.
TechnoTroubadour. Omg i thought the same thing.
Still, he was probably racist before he found out.
What a handsome man indeed.
even their ancestor got significant white ancestry in him , so he wasn t only black he was black and white mix
Mr Ganaway sounded like a class act. RIP.
I am proud to say that I’m a married to a Beautiful Black Women and having 3 children. God has blessed my family. My mom and dad are very happy to have mixed grandchildren.
God bless you and your family ❤️
Darwinism at its finest.
A lot of white people really want to be black.
^ on god
@@marksmall1476 That's pathetic.
“The whole black thing”😂🤦🏽♀️
L Smaccks historically black have been seen as a negative.
black natives in Australia have been bred out too now. Most tourist think natives are white because that is how the descendants of the black natives now look.
It was govt policy to achieve that outcome
Most white looking natives don't tell others their background and just pass as white only
He was probably racist before he found out.......

@@israelarteaga4385, But he has a black wife. So how can you know?
this african man was doing great at the time, when racism was fierce all over
He wasn't African.
Good post however as Meb777 pointed out ...he wasn't African..He wasn't born in Africa but in the U.S. consequently he was an American.
And they destroyed his work, calling him amateur photographer 😒
Many black people did very well for themselves, but you don't hear about it, because good news is no news..
he brought himself up from the ranks of porter on trains, so shit was still in effect, homie just did his thing and got around it.
I'm glad that this family all found one another again after a couple of generations.
I wonder how the white family felt towards black people before finding out they are black
J walker
Probably the same way. They are just a little richer due to his pics. Easy money. Lol.
They are not black. You go anywhere in the world biracial people are not considered black, why would be people who are 2-3 generations removed from a black person be considered black. They are not black and do not live the lives of black people in America. They are white people with some African ancestry, that's it.
Depends on how much credit they can gain😃😃
They are not black......
J P-Smith honey they aren’t black
racism will forever exist as long as you see me as black man and i see you as a white man,why not see each other as fellow humans
snoopyy28 Human races were invented by the white supremacists (aka Western European enslavers) to rationalize their continual enslavement of Africans and theft of indigenous people's lands. The label "white" and "black" are simply socio-political labels as well as "races". I don't know why people of African descent cling to a colour label to describe themselves.

Beautiful!!! Just a lesson in life... we're all connected! Black, Caucasian, French, Egyptian...you name it!!
@Michelle house music Chapman Yup soo true and lol Egyptians are close to blacks as expected anyways :)
They are a beautiful family. They do all carry their great grandad’s long facial structure but several of those women sure resemble their Swedish grandma 🙂
His genes were strong! Look at the hair, underlying skin tones, etc.
@Umbuko DaJuko No, that's not how genetics work. His genes are strong because in his grandchildren and great grandchildren you can still see his bone structure, their underlying skin tones and dark wavy hair though they are twice removed.
@Umbuko DaJuko They still look like him. Dark, curly hair, dark undertones in skin color should be an indication that a white person may have something else in them but that's a conversation most aren't ready for.
@@yolandawilson6619 I don't see it. I think people just like to say they can see similarity or people look like this person or that. Not everyone looks alike.
@@milkandspice1074 I'm speaking of his bone structure and features. He does resemble his grandfather the same as anyone else can resemble other members in their family. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist nor does it mean that people "just like to say they see something". There are various ways people look like people and it doesn't have to be identical. I'm sure you look like other people in your family the same as I do.
@@yolandawilson6619 People say I look like a lot of people I do not look like. And a lot of people have that bone structure.
There really isn't a resemblance.
Beautiful story. Beautiful family.
All of us really only know so much about our ancestry. We need to love ourselves othets and our heratige.
That was beautiful. I really appreciate that this family embraced someone that other families would may have denied being related to.

I applaud the "Chicago Tribune" for worthy Personal Interest Journalism.
What a family legacy. May they all continue to be blessed.
Just wow! I am a photographer and his work was amazing. I am so glad his descendants went looking and found him.
I read that MMA female fighter Rhonda Rousey is part black due to her great grandfather who lived in Canada, and was the first black doctor in Canada.

Yeah i heard something similar
She white.
I'm not surprised. She has a certain swag of confidence about her.
That makes sense I haven't heard many white people names rhonda

So the grandmother passed as white due to the conditions of the time. It makes sense.
What does that say about the condition of humanity for this woman to hide from who she was obviously for the privileges she couldn't have accessed as a Black person.

RIP Mr.Ganaway;You did good!
I had always been called 'high yellow, or dirty red' while i grew up in Harlem, NY, and in Brooklyn,NY. I have always embraced my mixed heritage because, obviously, some where along my heritage, the races mixed. Now, you can go directly to the facts about 'the slave master rapped our ancestors, or to the fact that there was consensual sex among members of different Indian tribes and the African Slaves and the white man. As long as people don't deny their mixed heritage, and stop getting caught up on the 'skin color' , the extended families will thrive and prosper in love, respect, and prosperity, and most of all the JOY of life fulfilled.
G&D Maxwell I
G&D Maxwell Thank you I am also of black/white/Asian/Native American heritage, and I embrace all of them (even without a DNA test).
subsystem101 and people like you are vile creatures who should be cast back into hell. I don't care what color you are. Who are you to judge anyone else?
Indeed, mixed is not the same as being white or black or red/yellos, it´s exactly what the term means: a mix of different lineages and King Ganaway was mixed himself, to start with, something which can be easily seen by his photo. Also, one of my brother´s youth friends looked completely Afro-Brazilian, had very dark skin but had one of his greatfathers as a very white (reddish white by the way, as he would describe his granddad) Portuguese man!
G&D Maxwell no disrespect but you do know black people come in different shades that's what makes us special. Just because you're light doesn't make you mixed. My mother is light with green / grey eyes n she is fully black and proud. Trust and believe white people are not out here claiming blacks because of a 1% ounce of European ancestry.
Yep. So many of us are connected. This was really nice to see. Thanks for sharing. 😊

I just wonder how many of Ganaway decendants went home that night and cried...because they were black now.
Yeah how will they face white friends? They will probably get stupid jokes about Black towards them, that's how insidious racism is.
They should rejoice because Jesus was black . Know your history. Pope knows and honors with most of Europe a Black Madonna and black child aka Jesus.
Such an ignorant comment
How evil can you be to erase a man from his children and grandchildren because he is black.
I got the impression he wasn't erased, but his race wasn't talked about. That makes sense for the times. If the grandmother could pass as white, it made an easier life for her.
He was buried.
Proud of these people! light emerges from the darkness.
This really warms my heart. To be honest, I got up this morning feeling a bit hopeless. I have 2 beautiful children, 4 yrs old and 1 yr old. They are so wonderful and kind and I was preparing myself for when I have to tell them about racism so that they are not as surprised and hurt by it as I was. I remember reading somewhere that morality has never been something that pushed white Americans to help people of color specifically black in their struggle to be treated with equality because they have never seen them as humans but rather it is fighting and dying on the streets that makes it difficult to ignore their situation. It pained my heart to prepare my children so innocent and friendly to face such an utter lack of empathy for their humanity. However, this video stopped me from becoming too pessimistic, in it I saw white people are willing to admit black heritage as if it does not mean something subhuman. It does not disgust them as so many are taught to be and in one of the most segregated cities in the US. I hope with all my heart that my children will meet people like this who can see their humanity. Parents continue raising your children to see others' humanity--I know that I will.
MeliMeli66 same thing happened to black natives in Australia. Now they are almost extinct. Although that was done by force breeding and not generally by voluntary marriages
There was a black native who was posthumously given a sporting award for what she did 50 odd years ago. It was weird seeing her "white grandkids" going on stage and collecting the award which she didn't get because she was a black.
