So the point is to go as slow as you can on the 1st lap and then as fast as you can on the 2nd? I don't understand this discipline.

They use massive gears, so to speed up on that you need a huge effort that can only be sustained for so long (usually around 200mts full power) . They test each other not to do the effort to early, but also don’t wanna be left behind. Standing is a way of getting the other rider in front so you can predict his moves
