I think also the lyrics of mamma mia is good: it is about free expression of yourself, freedom, explicit free sexuality, some irony on the stereotypes of italians in the world, so the lyrics is also self-ironic. This lyrics sum up the philosophy of maneskin, the message you can find in all their songs, you can see in the way they dress up and they perform, in the things they says during interviews and the way they live also their lifes, very coherent with the words of this song.

Mammamia was a throwaway song produced in a day. You really need to delve deeper and read their Italian lyrics. This song is a backlash against the way they were accused of taking drugs at Eurovision and their Italian haters who accuse them of not being true rockers. It’s amazing sung live at festivals it’s joyous.

Mammamia is not the greatest song to do a lyrical analysis, since it's a very ironic, tongue-in-cheek song abt the stereotypes ppl have abt them, specially since there was a whole ridiculous "scandal" at Eurovision in which leadsinger Damiano was accused of doing coke live on TV when they were filmed in the green room.
They talk abt "not taking drugs", "you wanna touch my body, I say you're not allowed" (a dancer from one of the bands at Eurovision licked Damiano's face without his consent), them being hot cause they're "italiano" and use the stereotypical Italian expression "mammamia" cause some ppl tend to see them in a very stereotypical way (like radio hosts in the US asking them what they thought of New York pizza)
Their English lyrics tend to be simpler, I'd highly suggest you do lyrical analysis of Italian songs like Coraline, La Paura del Buio or Torna a Casa, you can easliy find videos with their English translations

that's the point. Moreover it seems that the line "spit your love on me, I'm on my knees and I can't wait to drink your rain" deals with the hatred that some people threw on them during the Eurovision scandal. As if they can use it and transform in good stuff for them: the song Mammamia. "Tell me your limit and I will cross the line again" sounds like " ok you're limited, I will challenge you, cause you don't shut up and behave".

Damiano (the singer) was accused by some tabloids to be taking drugs during international broadcast, because of a gesture that could resemble sniffing from the table. Of course that was not the case, that would just be so stupid. This song talks about that (and some sexual stuff… because reasons): he was accused to be a criminal but he was just having fun. And later “I swear that I’m not drunk and I’m not using drugs, they ask me why so hot, cause I’m italiano”. But other than that, It’s just a fun song. Relax and dance 😉

You should def take a listen to their italian songs and ballads, quite poetic and beautiful i must say. The "cos' I'm Italiaanooo" was embarassing the first time (and I'm Italian) but then I've realized; this isn't just a catchy song and the provocation is there for a reason and it works - then the interpretation varies depending on the audience (Maneskin aren't explicit - you've to draw your own conclusions)...in my view, Damiano is mocking the foreign use of the Italian stereotype...but then we shouldn't limit this as an attack to Italian stereotypes...but to all stereotypes.
Mammamia, like "I Wanna Be Your Slave" are designed for the big audiences...and indeed they are very similar (of course if the first worked so well why not use it again? Seen it all before with other successful artist)....and yes, I think you are spot on in the similarities with Seven Nation Army (if you add a track with the bassline from the White Stripes it fits perfectly).
These guys are very ambitious and know how to play the market - but they are also very talented...their songs are incredibly various - they cover nearly all the modern music styles - so not just gender-crossing, but also genre-crossing (non rockers start listening to rock thanks to Maneskin.. and rockers start liking more easy listening songs too)...and somehow age-crossing too cos' kids and dads and grandma loves Maneskin.
I suggest to try and listen to some of their other songs - chances are, you'll find at least a few you'll really like.

The musical similarities: more than anything else, the chords are similar at their "I wanna be your slave" which, in fact, may remind you a little of "Seven nation army". "Mammamia" is born in hotel, in one hour, just after Eurovision. The song (like its commercial launch and the video) is about stereotypes. It makes fun of stereotypes, starting with the title. Stereotypes about rock bands: drugs, violence, sex ... the members of the bands always hate the frontmen. Sterotypes about italians. Stereotypes that made them suffer even before they became famous abroad ... and they were just kids. Very often their songs can be read in two ways. It is their habit, right from the start. On the previous album, there were songs dedicated to Marlena, which sounded like simple love songs, but they weren't. They talked about their relationship with music and inspiration ... and the need to be free to follow it. So your analysis is also correct. Maybe even more correct than mine, which is completely different. They refer to what happened to them at Eurovision (including the carnival). Spitting and pissing on someone can be an erotic game, but it is more commonly a form of contempt. And hate and rejection are an obsession as much as love. "You wanna handle me, but I'm a bit too much
/ I'll burn all the place down, 'cause I'm too fucking hot" and after "spit your love on me / I'm on my knees, and I can't wait to drink your rain... ....Tell me your limit, and we'll cross the line again". Everything is referred to the criticisms and false accusations. Why do I think this? Here is the previous one (there are English subtitles) czcams.com/video/eG-bBYiVWWM/video.html

I agree with you. I have seen their interviews discussing this song. But hey if it stirs more controversy to think all sorts of things about the meaning of the lyrics then that will help them sell more records. Honestly I love their music even the songs I can’t understand. I think Victoria’s bass playing is awesome and drives them! I will say that I find the sound unique especially in the songs sung in English because they are sung by someone who isn’t a native English speaker and it does sound different and from my view even cute and makes me smile. I love that the band seems to genuinely be friends and are really interesting intelligent and nice in their interviews. I personally dont think they need Damiano dressing like a transvestite

Blanco seems to be going down that route with his videos too. Maybe not quite as seedy a vibe but definitely in that direction.
God I miss Milan. Late December in Bolton doesn’t quite compare.

I'd suggest to make a research of their music in general(most of their songs have meaningful lyrics) , their beginning ,their attitude in life and the message they're sending. besides all that they have passion , energy, strong stage presents , great music and Damiano's unique voice, all of them are very talented and it's amazing if you think they are only 20-22 years .ps 1.maybe they have some elements in common with other bands but in the end they are totally different.2. I just hope that they'll manage to write successful songs out of this very limited box.

As an older rocker that grew up with the iconic bands, and favs like Queen, AC/DC, and Lynyrd Skynyrd; this band amazes me. They are young, good musicians, smart, and can do and blend multiple genres while creating new stuff. Many of their songs are completely different, yet still very good, and some are amazing. They do some great English songs, but their best work is in Italian. I think that may shift as they become more proficient in English. They clearly have multiple influences going way back. They don’t really have one sound, except perhaps their Italian ballads, which are just emotional and beautiful.
I think after listening to their charting songs, listening to a ballad like Torna a Casa, Vent Anni, or the masterpiece Coraline will give a much better understanding of their talent and skills.

Sadly there was a big break/gap and no new bands or interesting music that direction since 80’s finished. Until… I saw a video on TV in 2004 of the Darkness “love is only a feeling” and I saw you 😍 omg my husband had to accept my new love! he even went once to a concert with me to see you live. Wow you gave me that glam rock feeling again which I was missing so much over the years. Thank you. But apart from you there was nobody there. Now Maneskin came. They are great. Different to you. You are more 80’s glam, they are modern glam. He is more Sebastian Bach mixed with Tommy Lee, you are more Paul Stanley mixed with Freddie. You are both great, super bands, great music! Helo Justin, I really value your reaction, it's interesting the opinion of a well established musician for a profane like me, not a musician just an avid listener. This song is what in Italy we call "tormentone", i.e. a very catchy song that drills into your mind even if you don't like it that much and I still have conflicting fellings about it and so I would like you not to evaluate this band based on this song but when you can, if you wish, you may listen to their album "Teatro d'ira vol. 1", their latest one, which covers 8 tracks, only 29 mins, but very good stuff in my opinion, and showing how these guys, still very young and uphill in the learning curve, are influenced by a lot of "old" rock and it shows in each song. By the way, Mammamia, that anticipates next album, is, their words, just a silly song they wrote in a couple of hours just back from Eurovision and reminiscent of the controversy that took place there (during the post win press conference the singer was accused of having "sniffed" live on tv just because in a camera closeup he had his head bowed on the table while the table surface was not visible because of row of bottles and ice containers covering it from the camera-. He had been actually moving broken glasses on the floor and he answered the journalist that we "doesn't do drugs what you see is all natural I'm this way". Investigation was done as well as a volontary drug test that came out negative but that was somewhat of a buzzkill. I don't know the specific reasons behind the "sexual" verses on the song however their english songs are about fun and sex: they have made a statement for free identity/sexuality and basically "we don't have to like it to let others do it". In an interview they said there are still too many preconceptions about sex and the more we talk about it the more normal it becomes. I guess that's referred especially to the Italian scene where diversity is still looked at suspiciously and sexual freedom is just some pipe dream. They're also against stereotypes, like "sex-n-drugs-rock-n-roll, Italian machismo, or band members hating the frontman who get all the attention (as per video). Looking forward to your further videos! :D

    Hey there!
Maneskin's provocative 'Mammamia' reminds me of Abel Ferrara movies from the nineties. Sometimes too touted to my taste, but definitely dealing with what it's all about... What really fascinates me in both cases, and with Italy in general, is this ability to mix blinding beauty with filthy decor or atmosphere, and to mold that into a story that keeps you tuned in til the end. I think MCR's G. Way has inherited it as well. Instead of the bad taste in my mouth, I'll try to stay reminiscent of the spirit and message of the song... and do it my way, as you righteously stated.

IAre Italian Rockers Maneskin...Any Good? Yes, absolutely yes!!! You write: "oday I'm doing a lyrical analysis and musical dissection of Italian Eurovision Winners #Maneskin!" About your "analysis" on the Maneskin, you can do it when you have listened to their albums in full and read their lyrics especially in Italian. You will have felt their great friendship and their indoluble bond with which they influence each other, you will have followed their performances and concerts since their beginnings, you will have listened to their interviews. Then you can start making an analysis. This is not an analysis or at least the title is wrong, yours is a comparison of a single song with others not theirs and I don't know why you felt the need to make comparisons, I don't know why you underlined the geographical origin of a band and if this being Italian has something good. And to find out if it has something good you examine a single very simple song like Mammamia and even from this you cannot grasp its essence despite having an infinite informations to draw from. Dear Justin, this cannot be called an analysis. Analysis means breaking down a whole for study purposes and I'm sorry but you haven't done any of this.

"this is a really attention-grabbing instant grat type single" although you don´t know enough about the band, you hit it on point.
And thats also the reason, why Mamamia doesn´t reflect the full capabilities of the band.
    Why you are right ?
The first CD of the Band "Il ballo della Vita" shoot through the roof in Italy, with 5 Top 10 hits in the charts. With the leading track of thier 2nd CD "Theatro d´Ira" they attend the "San Remo Festival". It is the single most important music festival in Italy and earns the winner a ticket to Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Attending there was part of the launch of thier new CD.
In March 2021 they won the San Remo Festival.
Does´t anyone in thier label (Sony) or thier managment expect them winning ? I don´t think so.
In May they also won the ESC.
Does´t anyone in thier label (Sony) or thier managment expect them winning ? I don´t think so. Except that in both occasions the band believes in themselves.
In the week before the ESC, one of the major Blogs (Wiwi Bloggs) commenting ESC made a digital Jamsession, where all ESC contestants are invited to contribute thier Song and some other Music. Maneskin does that with the "I wanna be your Slave" and "Zitti e Buoni" double track (czcams.com/video/ssDtj1uL1Go/video.html). This recording alone has about 50 Mill views.
I bet managment wants to place "I wanna be your Slave" as the follow up song for "Zitti e Buoni".
After winning ESC, "Zitti e Buoni" entered all charts and luckily (;-)) the band could present a follow up song. This song, a rock song with dance vibes, even charted better.
Then something unexpected happens, a longago cover of them, "Beggin", went viral on tiktok and goes to No.1 in Charts - Worldwide.
All charted well. But now a follow up song is needed. You know the business better than i do, what the label wants in such a situation. And for the success formular, this follow up song must transfer some of the vibes of the former charting song. Thats IMO, why Mamamia has dance vibes and a dominant bass line. And thats the reason, why you are right.
Is it thier best song ? No, enter thier channel and hear other tracks and the full capability of the Band. You will notice that the italian lyrics are much better, because (mainly the singer Damiano, who writes most songs) they are limited in thier english speaking capabilities. These songs a far away from the sound of "I wanna be your slave" or "Mamamia". Hearing them, you will not ask if the imitate the "Darkness" or other brit rock bands.
Outfits: They want to be Glamrock, and full freedom of expression- And don´t recall to the "Darkness", they never mentioned it, just remember why the Darkness chooses this outfit too. Go to Queen and others of the 70ies. They are Italians and have better style as other Europeans and are outfitted by Etro, a major high-fashion label. Etro made the Jumpsuits for the "full Rockshow" ESC act.
Sound: The success of thier first CD gives them the influence to go into the direction they want - more into rock music. And yes, they want this raw 70ies rock sound, without digital improvements. They even record the tracks of thier cd in one take.
They sound like: Come on, they are 20, and doesn´t invent rock music new. Wait what the can compose and play, when they are at your age. But you are right, they covered "7 Nation Army" a lot and are also heavily influenced by the "Arctic Monkeys" and "Franz Ferdinand".

  • @greyflap
    @greyflap Před 2 lety

I think you're right that they borrowed quite a bit from "seven nation army". I actually here a cross between "No Doubt, Hella Good and " White Stripes, Seven Nation Army". By the way the riff you were playing at around 2:53 reminds me of "Southern Culture On The Skids, Camel Walk".

Interesting as my fave music is definitely from the 70s (I was born in 1977), and the members of Maneskin were all born in and around 2000.
They've said Mamma Mia was a response to their immediate press after Eurovision - the cocaine allegations, etc.
At any rate, a lyrical deep dive of "Coraline" would be something you'd enjoy because the song is heartbreaking, written about a girl lead singer Damiano knew. The castle referred to at the end of the song is a famous cemetery in Rome.

@@ironsquam3459 The Darkness won a three Brit awards and their debut album is considered one of the greatest albums of the 2000s. Songs like 'Holding My Own', 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love', 'Love Is Only A Feeling' and 'Friday Night' are fantastic glam rock songs but they don't feel overly derivitive. Yes, there's a clear 70s British rock and 80s glam rock feel, but the songs stand out on their own without ridiculously taking from older songs. I don't hate Maneskin, but currently they are primarily known worldwide for a cover of 'Beggin' and a Eurovision song which clearly sounds in parts like Seven Nation Army and post punk British bands like Franz Ferdinand and songs like 'Take Me Out'. Beneath the social media hype and the teen girls thinking they're the new Messiahs, the band actually have a lot to prove before they are remembered long term.
