- This has been a long time coming so for this video I'm going to be unboxing the latest deluxe edition of The Exorcist on 4K Blu-ray and I will also be reviewing the 4K picture and giving 4K comparisons.

On the drive home from seeing THE EXORCIST first run when I was 15 years old in 1974 I was telling my parents and older brother that it was all hype and not scary and that its ideas had all been done before in other movies. And scarier movies too! Then we got home and my Mom asked me to go to the basement for something she needed for cooking dinner and I told her: “I’m not going down to that dark basement alone!”
Yeah that sounds about right. I think I done something very similar myself when I was younger. My father and myself actually watched this together and I was only nine years old and I remember the day very well. I remember walking away saying what was the big deal but as soon as I got to bed I couldn't sleep a wink. The movie still send shivers down my spine at times

It goes without saying it's not a true representation of what I am seeing but it should give you an idea of the differences when it comes to the Blu-ray and 4k. Considering I was taking them directly off my TV I think they look pretty good. Thanks for checking it out

FINALLY lol. I've been waiting patiently for this review and so glad to see you were happy with the 4K. I saw some horror stories on CZcams, but I had a feeling a lot of it was exaggerated.
I know there was a few times in the video when I was talking about some of the inconsistencies when it comes to the 4K transfer but I stand by what I said 80% of the movie looks absolutely fantastic and to be honest I don't like nitpicking but I felt I had to address some of the issues people had with. Was looking forward to this review! I could only get the ultimate collectors edition which I'm really happy with but this deluxe edition looks stunning! Nevermind, enjoyed this review a lot and finally watching this classic in 4k!
You have no reason not to be happy with the collectors edition and I'm not going to lie I would love to own it and I might still go for it if I'm completely honest. I think the newly commissioned artwork looks absolutely beautiful on it and I was so happy to see it featured in my set. Good to hear you found it mostly good picture and audio wise Keith, I'm going to keep a look out for that hissing and other queues on my atmos system aswell. It's for sure a showpiece collectable and I agree that matte suits that steelbook. I think the spine of the box looks so good and would be instantly noticeable in any collection.
Actually Steve you could be doing me the world of good by checking out those audio issues that I was talking about in this video and I'm very curious to hear if you had the same problems. It's not very hard to miss them you'll know when it's happening. As for the edition itself it's great to see that both of us clearly made the right decision. Fantastic set! Like how they have the classic image on the steelbook, and the purple color of the box. Great cards and booklets too. Exorcist is a horror classic!

We never get the opportunities over here in Ireland to see movies like that on the big screen. It is such a shame and I hope someday I will have the pleasure of seeing it.
Ah waiting for this one Keith, Seen this when it came out in the cinema, scared the Bejesus of me, glad I wore brown trousers that day, I liked the detective element of the film simply because I like Lee, J, Cobb who played him., hope you enjoy the cinema tonight, I don't the disks on top of each other either, comparison shots are excellent too ,thanks as always Patrick.
Hey Patrick. I don't have any issues when it comes to the acting side it's just that side of the story never really intrigued me. I'm going to see the new one in the next hour and like I said in the video I'm not expecting anything from it. I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised but I doubt it. I wqs always amazed what they got away in the original, what with the crucifix scene and the language from such a young Linda Blair. Another beautiful edition for your collection. Hey Gary. There is so many new editions out this week and I'm trying to get out as many as I can while they're still somewhat relevant. This was a very important one as you know I've been wanting to watch this for so long now. Well it's never going to live up to the original, nothing can, that film is in a class of it's own. I will look forward to see what we think of Believer tomorrow. I am 36 minutes in and have no expectations of this one, that way I might enjoy it a little more. I hope we come away from it somewhat satisfied.@@millerman9991

You can't help but think of the VHS days when you watch incredible transfers like the Exorcist. But I have to admit I loved the VHS days and I actually missed them. As you said we are spoiled rotten when it comes to 4K transfers and I hope they continue to spoil us

Absolute classic and fully sgree. People get so precious these days and expect perfection which isnt always possible especially on these older movies. Love your take👍👍
Don't get me wrong I completely understand their concerns but it's very hard to care when it's only 30 seconds long and it's not all the time in that 30 seconds I might add. I do think people over exaggerate a lot when it comes to 4K transfers and I just don't understand why they can't just sit down relax and enjoy what's on show. Honestly Angelo myself and my fiance were doing the exact same thing when we were watching it. We could not get scary movies out of our head. That open in sequence with James Woods is probably one of the funniest sequences I've ever seen in a comedy

Got my copy Monday. Glad I went for this edition . Best the films ever looked and sounded. Great extras and books cards etc. Hoping to get the Mark Kermode book signed when he comes to Cambridge arts cinema for special showing and q and a of the exorcist next month.

Great video, Keith. It's one of my favourite horror films. It still holds up. I picked up the standard with the original cover art. We were very lucky to have that option compared to America's cover art 🤢
I'm hoping sorcerer comes to 4k eventually.
The American artwork is absolutely atrocious and as you said we were very fortunate to get the original artwork on the standard release as it should be. I really appreciate the kind words but unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it. This edition came out on Monday I had to watch the movie so I could review it so I decided to put it out on Tuesday and to be honest I rarely get new releases on the day of release. This was a bit of an anomaly if I'm completely honest. Don't get me wrong I would love to have my reviews out early but unfortunately it's out of my hands. But thank you for checking it out
Gosh Keith what a really nice set of the Exorcist. I had the Blu ray but never watched it and was confused on wether to get the 4K. I did go got the 50th An steelbook which is to pre order on zavvi.
I just must rewatch it this time. I saw this on VHS with my parents in the 80s. Great video Keith.😃👍

Top edition Keith 😮.....I'm not sure if il upgrade to the 4k....The new colour grading seems a bit much for me..The reds seem to be popping of the screen....but IV only seen screenshots.... Thanks for sharing 👍
To be honest Roy the HDR was overly aggressively used on this transfer. If you don't like the colors you're seeing on my comparisons then chances are you won't like the transfer in general.

Hi Keith, I also was lucky enough to get this BFI edition and like you said the basic version is 20 quid sterling and has 4 discs so I got that aswell as each disc has it's own space so I'll use that for everyday watching. Why they couldn't have put a flipper holder in the deluxe set steelbook aswell is a puzzle.thanks for the informative and entertaining review
I was thinking the exact same thing myself when I seen the Steelbook why the hell did they not put in a flip holder. It's amazing they do such an amazing job on the entire packaging of this release but when it comes to a small thing as a flip holder they couldn't be bothered. It's the one minor gripe to a fantastic Edition and a huge thank you my friend for stopping by

Hey Rob. I was just told by someone in the comment section that there is a few of these on eBay and they're actually asking for 500 to 600 pounds. It is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I actually paid 82 euro for mine and that's a great price considering the release itself. I really do hope you can find one but don't pay over the odds my friend
This is one beautiful set Keith. I had it in my shopping cart but then desided not to order. The reason is that I'm sure either Titans or Film Vault will put out a nice edition of The Exorcist at some point. Great video Keith.

Great video Keith, Great looking edition so worth the wait lad. I liked the Final Cut as more creepy and Karras back story with his mom most haunting. No grips on picture quality and sound for a film this age. Honestly Michael some of the things people complain about when it comes to 4K transfers is absolutely ridiculous. Imagine watching a movie that looks as good as this and then you find a 30 second segment that doesn't look as good and then instantly bash the entire 4K transfer because of a 30 second segment. It is absolutely baffling to me. Why the hell can't people just sit down and appreciate what's on show. But yes I was very happy with the 4K transfer. It is by no means perfect but it is by far the best the movie has ever looked and it was great to finally get a collectible worthy of the Exorcist. Thank you so much for checking it out my friend
@@millerman9991 Keith, absolutely agree and considering the age of some of the films that should be taken into account when viewing. I watched The Others on blu ray and what a fantastic atmospheric film, didn’t get the new release as like you said no HDR or Dolby Vision, however Criterion does excellent work on restoration so maybe when then annual sale comes around. I understand your gripe about the detective story however the scene between Lee J. Cobb and Ellen Burstyn is an excellent example of impeccable acting.
Don't get me wrong Gary there's not a thing wrong when it comes to the acting it's just the side of the story I never really enjoyed. But like I said it's a minor little gripe to a wonderful movie. Apologies Gary which arrow set are you talking about because they never brought out an Exorcist edition

You asked about our thoughts on the Detective aspect of the story/plot.. me myself, Keith.. I really like it! I think the character LT KINDERMAN is wicked - it is down to LEE J COBB the actor playing him tho.. cuz George C. Scott’s version in the 3rd film doesn’t have the same feel an I do like him as an actor..

The whole detective side it's nothing to do with the acting because everyone's on point I just find that aspect has no bearing on the entire story. Apparently if you read the novel that whole detective side is completely flushed out and I must check that out and see what it's like. But look it's a very minor nitpick to an almost perfect horror. Believe it or not but that is my first ever collectible when it comes to the Exorcist and that alone is criminal considering how popular the movie is. Beautiful Boxset Keith 👍👍 It’s one movie I won’t be buying multiple versions of, not because it’s bad, because it scares the living crap out of me!😱 It really is haunting & not one I watch often. I’ll be happy with the 2 Disc Blu-ray that came out a while back but I do have to say it’s a stunning set 👌

Great unboxing & review 👌 I don't understand some companies fascination with fixing jcards with glue or tape especially premium editions. They can sometimes damage the main product with ripping or staining 🙄
I've actually seen pictures that people have sent me of the amount of damage those glue spots can cause. Thankfully it hasn't happened to me and I'm hoping it never does. Could you imagine getting a release like this and ripping the main artwork because of glue spots and there's no replacement copy because it's sold out. I'd be sick. That has happened a few times with myself and I'm sure everything will be okay with your release. Amazon are very good for honoring their pre-orders. I don't think I've ever gotten a release cancelled from them.

I appreciate how well made the film is however sinse I was a child I've never liked watching it. It's a staple at my parents house every boxing day my mum and dad love it 😂 even have my Son and nephew watching it with the 😂. Good Vid mate

Pre ordered this on Amazon and as of now it seems to be in a weird "delayed" Amazon Limbo mode(very frustrating) its Very limited so il live with waiting as long as i get one! As always a cracking Vid Keith and it looks like a stunning box set to me and the 4k print sounds overall very decent👍

It seems to have happened to a lot of people and it has happened to me before when it comes to Amazon and in the end they did honour my pre-order so I really do hope the same happens to you because it would be a shame to miss out on this set. The 4K picture does have it issues but for the most part it looks fantastic and I think you'll have few complaints. Please let me know if you hear anything when it comes to your release
Yeah I'm in the same boat. Interestingly enough I wasn't able to pre-order for a while but then suddenly was able to about a week ago (so didn't know if they were preventing too many pre-orders or not). But given the small number being produced, I suspect I will miss out on it!
@chrisnightingale5529 My concern is they have not got the allocation of boxsets to cover the number of pre sales. Its something Zavvi have done all to regularly. Like Keith said to me amazon have always (mostly)came through in the end so fingers crossed we both get them...as they do look bloody nice.

Your edition is great. I have the extended version with recordings that did not appear in the original. I bought it in physical format and I also found it on iTunes in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos format.
The extended cut is in this version as well. I don't think I would have bought it if it didn't.

Nice looking set. I bought the standard release and I’m quite happy with the film overall. Oddly I prefer The Omen to The Exorcist and I can’t really say why - it’s just one of those things.
I am a huge fan of the Omen myself Stephen and I think it's about time they start looking into that trilogy and giving us the 4K release that it desperately needs. I haven't seen it in a while now that I think of it. I really must revisit it. Thank you for stopping by

Hey Keith, great video as usual really nice box set I did pick up the US steel book with the new artwork and I really really like it. It’s really a close call over the original artwork but if I would’ve had the choice, I probably would’ve picked the original. I don’t know if you saw it but the slipcase and slipcover for the US had this terrible artwork. I actually thought it was a joke when I first saw it. You would think that they would know that the artwork would be controversial so at the very least, they should’ve gave us original artwork on the slip case so you could just throw away the slipcover😂 of course I would never do that but with this one I might, it’s that bad.
and I agree 100% with your assessment of the video quality definitely it’s the best it’s ever looked. Yeah couple issues but no big deal unfortunately I haven’t heard the Atmos. My pre-pro is acting up and I think I’m gonna have to send it in. I’m going to order a new HDMI cable first just to be sure sometimes they do go funny, so I can’t wait to hear it in Atmos and I hope the new exorcist was worth going to see. Hey John. I'm actually looking to pick up that Steelbook that you have because I love the artwork on it. I have seen the American release and wow has to be some of the worst artwork I have ever seen particularly for the movie The Exorcist. I'm not sure what the hell they were thinking.
As for the transfer itself I honestly don't know why so many people were complaining. Yes it is far from perfect but my god it still looks incredible and it's easily the best it's ever looked. Unfortunately sometimes people just want to complain for the sake of complaining. It's the world we live in. If you do ever get around to checking out the Dolby Atmos get back to me John and let me know what you think because I had issues with the dialogue. I mentioned it in the video there was one or two scenes where I could hear hissing behind the dialogue and I'm curious to hear if you have the same issues. Thank you as always for stopping by
I originally pre ordered this set from Golden discs. Unfortunately, they informed me later that they couldn't fulfil my order. Tried ordering from Amazon, but unfortunately, Amazon wouldn't let me pre-order, kept saying seller doesn't deliver to my location. The Exorcist is one of my favourite horror film. I pre ordered the cheaper special edition. Brilliant video, man. It's a pity about some of the inconsistencies of the transfer and sound. But I won't let it ruin the experience of the Exorcist on 4k.
Wow I am so sorry to hear that you've had no luck getting the deluxe release. Having said that the collector's edition is a beautiful release and Nearly Everything that's in that edition is inside this set. So at least you have that going for it. There is inconsistencies when it comes to the 4K transfer and it's not the best transfer your ever likely to see but take nothing away from it it is easily the best the movie has ever looked and I'm sure you're going to be ecstatic when you see it for yourself on your own setup. I ordered both the Collector’s Edition and the Bible edition. Just got the Collector one in today. I agree that I don’t like the stacking of the discs.
I was so tempted to do the same myself and I still might. Yeah when you consider the amount of work that's gone into the edition itself you think they will come up with something better than stacking the discs.
As a huge fan of this film but not owning the 4K edition yet one question I have and have not seen this addressed in any review. Is the Theatrical cut in this 4K set the 1973 Original Theatrical cut or the Redone 2000 Theatrical cut? I would suspect the 2000 cut but hopefully im wrong and it is the actual Theatrical cut from 1973.
No both cuts of the movie are in this release on 4k aswell. You have the theatrical version and you also have the 2000 directors cut. I'm almost certain it said it on the cover. Not only that but there's actually five discs in this edition. Two Blu-rays 2 4k and a special features disc. I hope that's what you're talking about
@@millerman9991 I am aware of its contents yes however I don’t believe that the Theatrical cut advertised in this set and others is not the 1973 original version. Changes were made to the Theatrical cut in 2000 by Friedkin himself including CGI and other alterations. These changes are also present in the Extended cut too. So far as I’m aware the actual Original Theatrical version from 1973 has only been available on VHS and Laserdisc and I was hoping as 4K is supposed to be the ultimate format they would actually release the true original version.
Right I really need to look into that. To be honest the version I watched was the directors cut so I didn't actually knock on the theatrical version that I have in this release.
@@millerman9991 👍🏻 I’m not a huge fan of the extended cut, the theatrical cut is my preferred choice and is in fact the Directors cut. Extended cut is more Blatty’s preferred choice. If you watch the extra Fear of God some of the changes are highlighted and shown.

Really is a fantastic looking 4K transfer and like I said in the video if it wasn't for a few inconsistencies it would probably be one of the best looking 4K transfers out there. It’s Every Bit “as bad as people say” I’ve seen this look better on a really good vhs tape. DVD and Blu-ray for sure. Some scenes look Far better in 4k but the KEY scenes are horrible.

I ordered the collectors edition from Amazon UK - supposedly it has shipped along with my Hellraiser set but I am concerned because they are using Ascendia for the shipping service and their track record of successful delivery to this US is quite poor! I had same experience with the atmos , got the slipcover edition, but also have the steelbook ( like yours original) on pre order. I didn't like the hmv steelbook 1 bit . I think its a solid transfer 4/5. Hdr a bit aggressive at times . Tell us what you though of new film 👌
Hey Ian. Great to hear that I'm not the only one who had issues with the Atmos soundtrack. At times it was very distracting. But take nothing away from the sound I still thought it sounded amazing. I just got back from seeing the sequel and yes it was quite poor even though it started off very well. A missed opportunity unfortunately

Believe or not I received my copy just today. Unspoiled and in perfect shape. After 5 and half long months.
I placed the order a month before release but never got a delivery date. I just thought the order would ultimately be cancelled but the other day I received an update and now.... I do not know whether or not to open it. The value of the edition has increased an awful lot 😅.

Yeah you're absolutely correct it's gone up in serious value. If you do decide to open it make sure you leave the J card alone because those glue spots are an absolute nightmare. Of all the copies you can get in a numbered edition I wonder what would it be like to get the 0666 copy or the 0001 or the 2000/2000. I have never got a cool number in any edition. Not even a 55 or a 200 or a 777.... 🍻

Awesome review! I just recieved my edition from Amazon and i did remove the J-card and the clue damaged the outer cover. Amazon don't do partial replacements and i didn't want to risk anything since it's very limited so i didn't return it. They agreed to do a partial refund which is 40%. Still a bit angry but i blame Warner and not Amazon for this. Otherwise in perfect condition. Looking forward to see the film next weekend.
The amount of people that told me they've done the same thing as yourself. That's why I had no intentions of removing it in the video because I heard the horror stories. I know it's very frustrating but at least you got 40% back. It's not bad considering how much the edition itself is. Them glue spots are an absolute disaster

@@millerman9991 I think they used glue that is not suitable for these kind of surfaces as this outer cover. Seen a couple of unboxing videos where are no damages but the glue itself left some marks on top and bottom. Shame on you Warner.
You do sometimes wonder where quality control is. Surely there must have checked that out before sending them out. I don't understand this just simply wrap the J Card around and leave the glue spots. It's very simple

Me personally I just find it to be a lot of filler. I've always felt that way from the very first time I seen the movie. Don't get me wrong it doesn't spoil it for me I just find that a lot of the scenes drag on. But I understand what you are saying and thank you for sharing it with me

half of the film is really good until the exorcism starts the grain is scrubbed, and some color bleeds the transfer is so inconsistent a major disappointment considering how long we have waited for this. a good summary some people are oblivious blind not to see these issues.
Honesty Martin I do not know what you are seeing because I have checked out that Exorcism scene a few times now and I cannot see DNR. I don't think it's there and the one scene that I did notice color bleeding was only 30 seconds long and there's no way I would ever allow a scene like that to spoil what is a fantastic 4K transfer. It's a shame you didn't get the same out of it that I did. It is by no means perfect but it's still a very decent effort
@@millerman9991 not just me it's been mentioned in a few people's reviews there is definitely a softening of the picture during that scene compared to the opening half of the film It is not a major distraction it is a shame, the HDR is a little aggressive on the color pallet, yeah its decent but a film of this iconic status deserved more.
I absolutely agree with you when it comes to the HDR it does look a little rich at times but I stand by what I said I cannot see any DNR during that scene. But I've always said it everybody has a different viewing experience
Lovely set. Minimalist design but that's what makes it attractive. My copy is en route. I'm still baffled why Warner decided to give the UK the fancy treatment and relegate the US with that abomination of a cover. There are plenty of rabid collectors on this side of the pond too. Makes no sense.
Sometimes the most simplistic of designs are the best and thankfully they opted for a more simplistic look for the Exorcist because you don't need anything fancy. Like I said in the video it looks like a Bible and I thought it was quite brilliant to do it that way. Yeah I'll never fully understand why they ignore the US when it comes to Editions like this. My god they would be a huge market for it. Hopefully someday they will wise up

yikes, that glue on the J-card thing seems to be a real issue, the only time I had glue on a J-card do damage was when I tried to take one off of a digibook that was half frozen in the mail, but it seems like a lot of people are returning their copies, mine hasn't been dispatched yet, getting concerned, maybe I should cancel.
So many people have sent me pictures of the damage those glue spots can cause. Thankfully it hasn't happened to me and I'm hoping it never does. I just don't understand why they just can't simply wrap the J card around the edition without any glue spots and leave it at that. I really do hope your edition comes very soon and I definitely wouldn't cancel it. It would be a shame to miss out on this fantastic edition.

**Beware when removing J-card** Keith, just to bring to your attention from what I've seen on forums. They've used super-strong glue when attaching card to box and can rip/tear leather like material
To be honest it's one of the reasons to why I didn't want to remove it in the video and I have no reason to move it because like I said in the video there's nothing on the back. But yes I was told by a few people to be careful and thank you so much for stopping by and letting me know

I always remove the j-card, can’t be dealing with that lol. It looks better without. Pointless putting glue on them but it wasn’t an issue on mine luckily.
I haven't actually tried to remove mine and to be honest I don't think I will. Why they can't bring out J cards and have them simply wrapped around the edition without any glue spots I will never know.

It is a movie that I love but it's not my go-to horror movie. Don't get me wrong there is moments that genuine scare me but it's only in a handful of scenes. The spiderwalk being one of them. Black Christmas is a wonderful horror movie and I only just watched that not so long ago on 4K for the first time. It holds up so well

Never understood the hype with this movie. A bit boring and Linda Blair is comical with the green paint on her face. But I am a bit hypocrite, because I have the collector's boxset at home and it's stunning. I will give the movie a new chance this week.
The set you've got is absolutely stunning. The extra book is beautiful. Everything inside the envelope is the same as in the collector's set. Onky a bit too expensive for me. You pay 30 euro extra for the book and the bigger box.
Warner Bros is killing it with 90% of their releases. And they bring out a lot. They are doing big business in their 100 year anniversary. I hope they will keep the gold tints on the j cards.
To be honest Robert it's not just 30 euro for a bigger box and a booklet I also spent that to get a more limited set as well. Bear in mind there is only 2,000 of these out there and that alone is going to put the price up. The comparison's are not a true representation of what I am seeing but it gives people a good idea when it comes to the differences between the 4K and Blu-ray and even though I'm taking them directly from my TV I still think they look rather good.
Too bad they Totally shanked the transfer! It’s Every bit as bad as other people say. So many scenes drenched in blue, blurry scenes even. At points, it drops down to VHS quality. The Blu-ray looks better. Defeating the purpose of anxiously waiting for a friggin Year for it to release. Horrible. Thumbs down.

Yeah I actually agree with you on that one as well. You felt so sorry for the poor priest as well at the end of it. I knew they would try a headspin scene somewhere through the movie
I ordered the ultimate edition but what a sorry excuse for a 50th Anniversary edition with stacking discs and nothing to protect the steelbook from the tight slide box that'll scratch the steelbook over time and I'm definitely getting a refund for that box set since it won't stand the test of time and apparently the 40th Anniversary blu-ray still looks better. lol ew all that blue looks so odd and what a joke!
Yeah I cannot believe the whole stacking of the discs and I do not understand for the life of me how they can put so much effort into the presentation of this release but yet when it comes to the actual discs they half ass it. It's a shame you're leaving it back because it is a beautiful edition. As for the 4K transfer honestly shown it's the best the movie has ever looked. But look that's just my opinion. Yeah my discs were all scratched and my steelbook is scratched from the tight slide box and this is a total piece of sh*t for an anniversary edition and it's definitely a cash grab from Warner Bros. and that transfer looks like ass too. lol
I definitely don't think the transfer was all that bad. Don't get me wrong it had issues but I think it's easily the best the movie has ever looked.

Yeah that's cool that you like the transfer but I don't understand why it's so hard for them to get the movie to look normal and all that blue is distracting but it does stand out in shorter instances and I can see why some people don't mind. Even the dvd for the version we never seen looks more accurate than what we have and I'm just gonna settle on that and the 40th Anniversary blu-ray since that new transfer ain't even worth $30.
This is very strange because everybody keeps talking about the movie looking blue and I don't see it. Yes there's bits during the exorcism but other than that I don't see any issues.
I love your videos, and please don't take this personally, but can you try to avoid starting so many sentences with the word "so..."? The only reason I mention it is that I've noticed a fair few people in my workplace doing the exact same thing when on group calls, and it becomes very noticeable when it is used so frequently. Again, no offence intended but just a little suggestion for a more polished presentation.
I definitely do not take it personally Gary. The one thing you have to understand though is everything you see in my videos none of its scripted everything is just flows out of me so it's very hard for me to stop saying one word. To be honest I don't think I would want to anyway because I am who I am and people seem to like what I have to say so why change it just for the sake of one word. Do not Sweat the Small Stuff my friend
