have to watch this soon closer to Halloween
What did you think of it mate? 😊👍👍
My thoughts on the transfer is I thought it looked great. I did notice the colour bleed but it didn't bother me. The reds were a bit oversaturated but I was satisfied. I was sad director William Friedkin died just before the 4k release. Good video John.
Thanks Mark, it's a bit like when George A Romero passed away just before Night of the Living Dead got a proper restoration after being in public domain more it's whole life 😔 cheers again for your views 😊😊👍👍
Nice review John.... love the comparison screenshots 👍
Love the movie but the transfer was hit and miss for me,I'm glad I picked it up but can't help thinking it's a missed opportunity
Cheers Gazza, can't see them doing another master of this for a long time 🤔 thanks for sharing your views mate 😊😊👍👍
Awesome vid 👌
I think it's a fantastic transfer John. I didn't even notice any of those points until you pointed them out. For me I think people have been ridiculously picky about it. It's the best this film has ever looked. The bit you showed of the train in the subway? The 4K shot looked miles better to me. The colour bleed from the red book onto the priest's hand didn't look great admittedly - but like I said if you hadn't have pointed that out, I honestly don't think I'd have even noticed it. After I heard all the negative things about it, I was absolutely over the moon when I watched it and I watched both cuts. What a film - and Wow what a transfer. I think Warner Bros have done an amazing job mate.
the first time i saw the exorcist i was 12, my friend had lent me a pirate vhs, telling me it was the scariest film ever, i watched it downstairs by myself laying on the sofa, the quality was terrible. by the time things were kicking off i was on the edge of the sofa, when the pea soup shot out i leapt up, shot upstairs and didn't return for the rest of the night, i just left it playing. totally freaked me out! i have always chased that sensation with horror films ever since.
Great story David 🎃🎃👍👍 oh to be as scared as that in our adult years mate!! I remember being terrified with many movies at a young age (too young) sadly these days I only get the odd jump scare or freaked out by a creepy scene 🥴 so how long was it before you went back to The Exorcist and watched it fully David? 🎃🎃👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies i'm not sure if i finished it during that period but it didn't diminish my taste for horror, i grew up with alien and predator, both of which i owned before i was 10. i think i was just primed by the mythic status of the exorcist and didn't know what to expect, i definitely bought the vhs with the spider walk after the ban but i've always preferred the bare bones version without the additions. i think aliens is the rare exception where special editions work, i dont even like the apocalypse now redux lol too much filler that ruins the flow.
Rewatched this (Theatrical Cur) in 4K UHD on Sunday to kick start my first ever… 31 horror movies in October challenge. Six down in the first three days. Another two (or three) this evening…
Getting stuck into them Horrors Cheekster!! 😁😁 Nice one mate 😊😊👍👍
I think it’s a great transfer in general, did notice a couple of shots in the exorcism scene that looked a bit like VHS quality for a quick moment, but think that’s down to the original footage and maybe using different cameras for those shots, the higher quality has just emphasised the issue. Can’t understand where some of the colour bleed has come from though if it isn’t present on other formats
"that's down to the original footage".....the blu ray never looked like VHS quality in those shots, even the old DVDs don't look like that.
@@austinwillcut4919 if you compare them there is a quality drop in those same places, it’s just enhanced by the higher quality. No colour bleed in other versions though
Cheers for sharing your view Rob, I do think that in some movies they use multiple cameras and you can see fluctuations in the shots, maybe the cameras are cheaper in some scenes, maybe the colour bleed comes from when they switch up the contrast on other parts 🤔 it's a funny one! Thanks again Rob, appreciate that 🤩🤩👍👍
Would be great to see you do a top 20 horror films of all time on blu ray and 4k. Haven´t gotten my exorcist copy yet, ordered the special edition, this is one of my favorite films.
I'm definitely going to do a top 10 Horror movies sometime mate, always wanted to just never got round to it yet 😁😁👍👍
i have the 4k steelbook but have not watched it yet. cannot wait!!
Hope you enjoyed it John 🤩🤩👍👍
My local cinema is playing the 4K restoration again tonight 👍🏻 did you watch the directors cut or theatrical cut for this review ?
Would love to see this on the big screen but The Debs would never go there Findlay 😱🤣 yeah Directors cut mate 👍👍
Hello John. Ime glad you put my mind at rest regarding the new 4K of the "Exorcist" and its my Brothers favourite 80s film which he might get at Christmas?
The retail VHS you have is Swedish (AB) och det är bra min vän👌
It’s not an 80’s film.
@@thischannelisdeleted Sorry, i know its not a 80s film but rather a early 70s movie. Call it a freudian slip, as i wasn't born then and only saw it in the 1980s
I think its a great representation of the movie Darren, I don't think your brother will be disappointed mate 🤩🤩 great info on the VHS Darren 😊😊👍👍
Much obliged for the mention, John and 'The limey from Vimy' is still going strong.
A short while back I ordered a BR steelbook from Ebay and I was surprised to see our old friend, Kev was the seller!😉
Hi John I agree with what your saying but still need to express the two disc Blu-ray £7.99 version is still great value and the quality is great. If your on a budget still would highly recommend the big question is do you prefer the 2000 extended directors cut or the original 1973. After watching it I do prefer the 2000 extended
Hi Glenn, yeah the blu ray is a great release and it still holds up really well today Glenn 🤔🤩🤩👍👍 I do prefer the extended cut mate, mainly for the Spiderwalk 😱😱🤩🤩 great set piece! Can't understand why it was dropped! It's so effective, Friedkin thought it looked bad, but I beg to differ 🤔😁 I'll watch the Theatrical cut next time as I haven't watched it in years, but I'll probably go Extended for every watch after that 🤔 cheers for watching Glenn 🤩🤩👍👍
Hi John,
I"m actually planning on picking the very edition of "The Exorcist" the coming week, its not my very fav horror movie of all time but a very effective & classic & much talked about movie even today.
The stairs scene still the scariest scene in the movie for me, thanks for sharing the info in regards to the transfer, take care, speak soon.
I think its a really great release for the money Carlos! Original art, can't be beaten with this movie 🤔👌👌spider walk!! 😱😱🤩 no problems mate let me know what you make of it yourself Carlos 🤔🤩🤩👍👍
I’m just glad I’m able to see some of my favourite movies in 4K, I can’t believe some of the movies we are getting in this format, especially from Arrow and 88 films, yes some releases have the odd issue but overall most look and sound amazing...anyway I’m off to watch Zombie Holocaust again...I love that movie, it’s nuts lol.
I agree totally with you mate 🤩🤩👍👍 that's exactly the same philosophy I have with these older and obscure Horrors on 4k, they will all have their limitations but wow its a good time isn't it 🤩🤩👍👍
I haven't seen the 4K version, John but as far as the movie goes it's up there with the scariest movies ever made.
Definitely is Gary!! Dont think another sequel or version of The Exorcist will come near to it mate 🤔🤩🤩👻👻👍👍
Father Meryll… 😵Where’s me ladders 😂😂😂
I know...I'm surprised I remembered their names Shaun 😵💫🤣🤣👍👍
I agree with your assessment John. There are problems but like you said it’s couple of minutes tops. Max von Sydow and Linda Blair do have a lot of makeup. 👍
I think that VHS release is from Sweden, not from Finland 😊 Great video 👍 Just watched The Exorcist from HBO MAX and it was great, that it was the original cinema version from 1973!
Cheers Mar, I have a Finnish release of A Clockwork Orange and always get the 2 mixed up as I got them around the same time 🤔😊 glad you enjoyed watching the Exorcist again and thanks for watching bud 😁😁👍👍
Hey John 👋 hope you and the Debs are well 😀 The wife and I went to see the 4k remaster at the cinema last Saturday night at the cinema having heard the extremely mixed reports of the transfer. It started with a fantastic introduction by a film historian giving the sadly sparce audience a background to the works of William Friedkin and telling us how proud they were to unveil the new transfer.
Then the film started and I was horrified 😮 The picture was extremely soft and colour bleed was off the scale. When people were in outdoor scenes it looked like them ready brek adverts when we were kids with a red glow round them. To make things worst when the 2 fathers were going up the stairs to start the exorcism the screen froze for about 10 minutes 😢 They got it going again and the film finished. On the way out of the screening the manager was waiting by the door. She explained that their equipment was faulty and it wasn't performing to its capability and gave us vouchers for a free movie including film and drinks. The next morning i unwrapped my 4k copy just to check 😆 🤣 and yep it looked sumptuous and I really can't see what the complaints are about. ❤ sorry for the long story 😅
I agree, I saw this at the cinema last night. The introduction was brilliant. Then the movie started...I had to rub my eyes because I thought it looked wayy too soft. At times looking like a VHS copy. My 4K looks nothing like that at home. But the soundtrack...wow what an experience!!!!
@gavvo-7640 oh yeah the soundtrack was ace 👌 👍 A couple of times I jumped out my skin 😆
Cheers for this message Roy! Wow that's nuts mate 😱 I would have been raging about that 😡 will you be able to go to see The Exorcist again? Or is it finished now 🥶 I'm getting mixed opinions of the transfer in the comments and for me personally I don't have an issue mate if I'm honest 🤔 a similar thing was said about The Shining when it came out on 4k, that it was too warm, personally I had a great time with that one as well, glad you had a good experience finally with the filum in the end! I know it's your wife's favourite movie......funnily enough it's not The Debs favourite 👻🥴🤣🤣👍👍
Haha did you watch the spiderwalk scene Roy! The noise on that really freaked me out mate 😱😱👻👻
Thank James Ferman for having to pay 30 quid for the VHS, with his stupid persistence in not allowing it on VHS in the UK, with this and Texas Chainsaw Massive the man was an idiot and hung around unfortunately for far too long at the BBFC..
Yeah Ferman was totally to blame for us horror hounds paying out daft prices for movies we should have picked off the shelves for £10 or so Andy 😡😡 it was refreshing to see when he stepped down after faaaarrr too long at the post, the floodgates opened and we got to see some great releases of these movies! I always like to think that he was really personally offended by that 😊😊😊👌👌🤣🤣 great comment Andy 😁😁👍👍
It was all politics. Thatcher and her vicious regime censored the public, a dictator does that.
I thought it was brill, a few slightly softer scenes, but for a 50 year old film, I couldn't ask for much more john
I pretty much feel exactly the same way Scoob 🤩🤩👏👏 cheers for watching mate 🤩🤩👍👍
I went to the cinema last night and they showed the Director's Cut in 4K and on the big screen it looked awful, soft focused and hard to see the detail. But.. the soundtrack was exceptional!! I heard things I've never heard before -like Regan scuttling along the landing before she heads down the stairs for the Spiderwalk. I thought the 4K looked pretty good on my set up at home, whether it's just my eyes, I did think the Theatrical Version looked better for some reason. We will never get a better version of The Exorcist for home viewing. I think Friedkin went a bit OTT with the color grading over the years, so I will keep my DVD from 1998 to watch the final act how it was supposed to look. Great review btw.
What do you think of the old standard Blu-ray?
@@thischannelisdeleted Hi. The original Blu Ray release looks brilliant to me. I forgot to wear my glasses for distance when I went to the cinema to see the 50th anniversary lol, probably why it was a bit blurry. The 4K looks great at home tho
@@gavvo-7640 So for a first time viewer/purchase, would you reccomend the BD over the 4K? Or the 4K?
@thischannelisdeleted the old Blu Ray is still a cracking release Deleted 👍👍 got no problems about it and it still holds up till this day mate 🤔🤩👍👍
@gavvo-7640 yeah agree with you Gavvo 😊😊👍👍 I too need glasses for the Cinema so I can never give an honest opinion if I forget them 🥸🤔🤣🤣👍👍
The VHS is from Sweden, it's not our language. Sweden didn't have as strict censorship as Finland, so they had a bit more vibrant versions of horror movies. Netherlands and Greece didn't really have censorship, so their tapes were the best. UK cassettes were better than the Finnish equivalents, but not much better than the Swedish ones.
Cheers Henri 😊😊👍👍 I remember Greek subtitles on a lot of bootlegs and they were all uncut as you say 👍👍 thanks again mate 🤩🤩👍👍
hey fella, excuse me for not getting back to you for a while, i've had a slump. i go quiet and then end up getting weird about getting back to people and explaining myself, i kinda got into an altercation as i was trying to get in my door a while back and a guy laid his hands on me and stood in my way, so anyway, i get arrested, wrongly i might add and i've just been affected by it all a bit, so sorry for not replying sooner. i saw your video about your records and i felt so bad for you, my deepest condolences! hope you and the family are well and had a good holiday.
I bought the video when it was released on vhs but never did buy the dvd and on Tuesday night on BBC1 was "The Exorcist" ...again ! Lol ... I never noticed any colour bleed. How do we not know the director maybe made the train lights like that on purpose ? ... Watch the intro to the movie "The Warriors". Interesting & great review John thankyou. Regards Jim
VHS looks from Sweden not Finland. Is this the five disc blueray?
Cheers Manzarek, yeah it's been confirmed that it's definitely from Sweden 👍👍 no the five disc edition is only out on Steelbook mate 🤩🤩👍👍
Hello!!! This edition 4K UHD from UK of the exorcist includes" the fear of God" extra Documentary? Thank you, friend
Thanks for your question, I'm pretty sure that extra is on the second blu Ray in the UK set I have, it doesn't mention it on the cover, it says it's on the set when I looked online but I'll definitely find out for you by checking the disc, cheers Charlie 😁😁👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies I dont understand English very well jajaja.... Sorry. I'm Spanish.
Just tell me yes or not to my question, friend. Please
@kyl888 I will find out yes or no soon Charlie 👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Thank you very much
@kyl888 no problems mate 😁😁👍👍
Still yet to watch my copy yet but I have heard the 4K transfer is bad in places
Be interested to hear what you think about the transfer when you watch it Mark 🤔😊😊👍👍
Nice video
Cheers for watching Danny 😁😁👍👍
Great video bud. I thought this looked fantastic. It's not perfect, but it didn't detract from the viewing enjoyment for me. I am part of the VHS and Betamax era. So even to be able to own these films is enough for me. Keep up the great work
Yeah, growing up in the VHS era myself makes me grateful for how the censorial climate in the U.K. has changed for the better since the late '90s.😉
Thanks for watching Tris, this notification just came up now, must have missed it first time around mate 🥴 great way to describe it!! Its not perfect but I never found myself bothered by them at all when I watched it 🤔👌👌 good point, I would have taken a 5th generation copy just to even SEE it back then! Now we have this amazing release 👌👌 cheers again mate 🤩🤩👍👍
I know that when I was watching Labrynth on 4K part of it will be heavily grainy then it will switch to all the grain scrubbed. It just keeps changing every few minutes. It was frigging annoying.
I think a movie that has certain type of special effects that were achieved by overlaying the effects over the film like say the skeletons in Jason and the Argonaughts, the quality really drops for those scenes and maybe this could the case for Labrynth possibly 🤔 it can be quite off-putting I agree Kevin 👍👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Gotcha. I'd rather watch it just on bluray.
There's some movies I have that Blu Ray is just fine as well mate 🤩🤩👍👍
@MondoChelloveckMovies I hear you. I think the 4K thing is just a money grab. I only got a player because it was just as much as a regular bluray player and I liked the cover art better on the movies I bought. Plus they were the same price.
@kevinkelley3906 I think big studios seem to cash grab the 4ks, boutique labels seem to treat the format with more respect, and the consumers with more respect and do that extra work on them, big studios will definitely do more lazy upgrades for sure Kevin 🤔😵💫👍👍
its mainly a hit but the clour bleed dose take away a lot
Cheers for your views Chris, did you notice a lot of colour bleed throughout the movie Chris? 👍👍
@MondoChelloveckMovies yeah i noticed it stright away tbf then went online line and saw other people reporting the sane
I hate how they changed the beginning audio music right at the intro for the Atmos mix… it sounds more modern but not as scary. Compare the two and you will see.
I didn't really notice that one, I'll take a look at it 🤩🤩👍👍
spiderwalk would mean director's cut
Yeah watched the Directors cut John 😊😊👍👍
I really enjoyed watching it yes there are a few flaws but its still a classic
Cheers Simon, yeah I did acknowledge that those things were there but as Friedkin supervised it and signed it off, I suppose it was his vision we are seeing which is interesting. Cheers Simon 🤩🤩👍👍
To be honest I've never found The Exorcist scary. But that's just my opinion. I prefer Salem Lot 1979 and Omen and Omen II for scares that give nightmares. But it was interesting hearing your thoughts.
I still don't get those 4K UHD releases...movies that were originally recorded on film, are now released as if they were made with digital cameras!? Back in the days, I've watched (color) movies on a black&white tv, then I saw movies on vhs, then came (even before that there was laserdisc) dvd (which was already cool), then Blu-ray...and now there's 4k UHD, what's next, 8K UHD?!
Can't see 8k discs ever being made Peter, companies have stopped making 8k tvs as they are bad for the environment (they say) so I feel that 4k is the farthest it will go....I can see 8k maybe being a thing at the Cinema sometime (possibly) when 4k is done right on a release it looks beautiful so I like that it's an option if you want it 🤔🤩🤩👍👍
yes its diminishing returns and often detracts from the experience.
I thought the transfer was excellent. As I said to Nigel the only scene that looked rough was the opening shot of Georgetown. Whic was really grainy 😎
I think that opening shot of Georgetown has the overlay of the word Georgetown on that scene, this takes the quality down, a bit like when the opening credits of the movie are on Shaun 🤔👍👍
The uk artwork slipcover is fantastic compared to the American one imo of course 👌🎥 not watched mine yet thats for Halloween 🎃👍💿
I've tried to love this 4K... I have two players one 4K UHD and one 4K upscaling player I've watch the discs jumping back and forth from one HDMI source to the next watching the scenes carefully the exorcism scene on the 4K looks awful there's more film grain on the old VC-1 Blu-ray then this 4K and then there's the bleeding effects you can even see it radiating off Karras's blue jumper on the edges it looks like DNR has been applied to this scene also at stages lips at the skin tone of their lips if I'm honest I think this is the same remastered from 2010 just gone over with HDR and also more added blue over the image making the image look washed out
Cheers Paul for your thoughts, I know Friedkin was invoked in this remaster and would love to have seen an interview of him talking about what he or the remaster team had done to this release, sadly we will never know, its a shame because it would have been interesting to hear that for sure! 🤔🤔cheers for watching Paul 🤩🤩👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Yeah, would be nice if Arrow released this I would be super happy if they just did a 4K restoration Blu-ray of the original camera negative only removing film dirt or scratches NOTHING else. Thankfully the old VC-1 Blu-ray remaster looks like the negative was clean just needed that extra boost of being a 4K scan
I saw the new film in the cinema the other night I was not really feeling it if I'm honest... But I'll get on when it comes out on Blu-ray next year to see if my feelings change like they did with Halloween Ends which I did not like when I watched it in the cinema but now grown to like it
I'm in 2 minds whether to watch it myself Paul 🤔🤔 I don't mind cheap Exorcist rip offs but these new ones trying to relive the original don't really do it for me unfortunately mate 😵💫😁👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies yeah, I hear ya mate, Arrow released a film called Beyond the Door the female demon character in that is very scary you feel it when she's on screen. You don't really get that with this new one plus the way Chris MacNeil's character is treated is so bad she gets stabbed in the eyes...👎🏻 so much for the return of an legacy character
I saw the extended cut in the cinema and it was atrocious color temperature wise. The iraq sequence is too red rather then orange. Regans model of pazuzu was day-glo orange. It took me out of it. It looks great in a way but it pulls me out of it.
I first saw this on a bootleg 3rd gen vhs and it was terrifying. It is too clean in uhd and looses the extra layer of dread.
I've only seen The Exorcist on good formats, one of the rare "unavailable" movies that I did and I agree that the film is more scarier on the lower format (for me VHS) good point NOPE 🤔🤩🤩👍👍
The vhs is Swedish 😊
I wonder if that is the only adult Swedish video tape John has.
Thanks Patrik, I used to get a lot of stuff imported from Sweden so I should have known that mate 👍👍👍
I couldn't possibly comment mate 🤔🥴🤣🤣👍👍
the VHS has swedish writing

Hello Tomislav 🤩🤩👍👍 nice sentiments for the late and great William Friedkin 🙏🙏🤩🤩 thanks for your comments mate 👍👍
Good work here, except that it's Father MERRIN. And to me, the color is too vibrant, too "painted"'. I'll stick with the Blu-ray.
Yeah Jon, usually when I turn the camera on my mind turns to mush 🥴🤣 the blu ray is a really nice version it has to be said, cheers for commenting mate 🎃🎃👍👍
the biggest disappointment of the year we waited so long for this and I felt underwhelmed by the inconsistent transfer, Great film though.
Hi Martin, I really can't see a problem with this transfer personally....I know its a mixed reception in the comments but for me it's great 🤔🤔👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies the first half is good then it's when you get to the exorism it all goes like it's been DNR scrubbed and the colour bleed is bad.
@4Kmichelinstarmovies I don't see that myself Martin, if I hadn't looked at any reviews I wouldn't have noticed anything at all with it, not saying it's not their it doesn't pop out to me 🤔🤔 I'm going to watch the Theatrical cut next time, do you think the same for that version mate? 😊😊👍👍
4k is too much resolution for this film and robs it of its special tone, youd be better off with a vhs.
The VHS was a good version, one of the best, personally I like the 4k 🤔😁👍👍
For me I hated this transfer and is everything I hate about 4K or HDR/UHD specifically. Over sharpened, over saturated colors. It is so overdone. If this is what people like, cool, but it is the farthest from natural looking. I can't stand it.
I taught Photography and when UHD became a fad, which has now poured over to movies, everyone and their mother used that App on their photos. Oh look, a new toy. Overused and used in inappropriate times. DO you really think UHD is appropriate on food photography. NO NO NO. Oooh, look how sharp that banana looks, it looks like metal. Cool. Uh, no. Just stop.
I think 4k looks crap. Too much teal. House By The Cemetery and New York Ripper looks awful.
This is just not true and unfair to dismiss the format in this way. There are fantastic examples of 35mm and 70mm film being transferred to UHD that are stunning. Unfortunately there are examples of over over sharpening use of Dolby Vision in particular which is certainly revisionist. I find HDR10 is usually a more faithful to the source. How are you viewing theses films? I find UHD flatscreens are a problem and are far to too bright and can seem digitally processed. A calibrated 4k projector is the way to view these movies.
@@comiccollex958 Seriously. "This is just not true and unfair to dismiss the format in this way." There is no right or wrong. It is subjective and my opinion. If you like it, have at it.
Got to say that I think all the 4ks of Fulci movies look amazing in 4k in my opinion Simon 🤔 👍👍
@@MondoChelloveckMovies Too much teal colour grading. Especially New York Ripper.
Hi John, I streamed The Exorcist 4K from AppleTV+. The DVD is the last unfutzed release. Comparing the DVD with the 4K, all the daylight scenes are hyper real (vivid/unnatural), all other faults pale in comparison. These observations were made on an LG OLED in ISF Dark calibrated mode. While the DVD is probably closer to the OCN, the DVD has digital artifacts (due to a low 5Mbps encode) that doesn't make it a great viewing experience. Billy Friedkin (RIP, bless his heart) is well known for revisionist tinkering. I guess he had the last laff?
So I went to see this at the cinema over the weekend and it comes with an introduction, that states the blown out colours and saturation were a conscious choice by William Friedkin when he was restoring it, so everyone needs to stop moaning about it, film looks great sound mix is awesome
He has a history of ruining his own transfers, remember The French Connection debacle?? You can’t trust him lol
@thischannelisdeleted he's definitely altered the colour, it's more warmer and I think it works personally 🤔🤩👍
did you get mc vicar with slip special edition exorcist believer imax booked
A masterpiece of a film, but an over processed and over saturated mess of a transfer. Aweful.
Great film for sure Christopher 🤩🤩👌👌
