Oops, I missed again... How to attack high backspin balls

  • In this video I explain how to attack high backspin balls.
    High balls should be easy to deal with, but when the ball is high with backspin it can be a little trickier. Some players make an error of hitting the ball too flat and the ball ends up in the bottom of the net.
    Instead if flat hitting the ball, you should try and topspin the ball instead. This will help counter the backspin and get the ball over the net.
    In the video I demonstrate how to attack how backspin balls with both forehand and backhand topspins.

      Yes, it's a strange thing. The better you do the serve, the more it comes back to your wide backhand and it can be quite awkward. But once you get that backhand topspin working well, then it's a very effective serve + 3rd ball routine.

    Good explanation. Top spin shots on high balls are not as powerful compared to a very strong smash. Hold the bat bit loose and smash the ball by using body weight transfer. High speed doesnt allow back spin rotations. It will cancel out the spin. This smash is impossible to return. This works out for balls that are high top spin too.

    Another great lesson - thanks for posting. If ball came lower, I would use top spin but had not thought that much about higher return HOWEVER if someone lobs ball back to me (not high backspin), I tend to let in drop to about 2 feet from table and then smash it - probably very good reasons NOT to do that but seems to work best for me (for now).

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  Před 4 lety +1

      If it's a lob with topspin, I find it easiest to smash about shoulder height. But I have a player I coach who lets it drop a bit more and still manages to smash it hard. If you can do this consistently, then go for it!

      knowledge master yes, I use them very successfully at top local league level. You can also swipe or punch chops for no spin balls that confuse and win points. Chopping topspin hard multiplies the spin and gives it back.

    • @enricostengert2292
      @enricostengert2292 Před 4 lety

      Long pips will change your game completely. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are fully committed to it and you are going to play mostly defensive. It is designed to play deceiving balls and counter offensive players. Pips will take the topspin out or even reverse it, so they can be very effective but it requires some skills to control.

    • @enricostengert2292
      @enricostengert2292 Před 4 lety +1

      For your heavy backspin question: long pips will not produce as much backspin as a sticky or spinny inverted rubber usually. They do produce some spin but compared to some inverted rubbers, it doesn’t hold up. Again, these types of rubbers are designed to cancel out opponents spin and create a disruptive game.

      Without seeing you I can only take guesses, but my coach just recently taught us about it. A common mistake is, that people keep their upper bodies stretched while shooting. You have to lean into the shot while you swing. Another possible issue could be, that you do more of a chopping motion rather than an actual swing. In case you are righthanded do a wide swing all the way across down to your left biceps while turning your shoulder and hip into the shot. Hope this helps.

Backspin of the ball shorten its flight and the ball will hit the table. When the ball flies towards me with a topspin, I aim to hit the net. There's an alternative to hitting topspin from a higher level , say upper chest height . Retreat till contact is made at ( just above ) net height and play a softer topspin with greater angle . Judgement of depth of the returned underspin ball is critical here . This works well especially towards backhand side . Or it gives time to run around to the forehand .

      You are correct. Here's a nice overview of this problem... czcams.com/video/LHTV4J5S6nM/video.html

    Hitting flat with correct timing and enough force, much like a smash, will still cause the ball to go over the net.

      You are right, but it is a bit more risky when there is backspin on the ball. I prefer the safer option of topspin.

      @liberate26 Před 4 lety

      I definitely agree. Topspin can help to create a bit more safety in the shot lifting the ball over the net and can even prove to be more difficult for your opponent. Sorry if my comment was negative. The rest of the video had good information.

    Virtually you are attacking high backspin with forehand topspin. But I have seen many many players who just smash the ball even it's not right above the net. Racket angle

    If I play the power like u play ,I will miss the opportunity as my opponent will return the ball with lots of power

      It depends where you put the ball. In the video, I may be using say 70% power. But if I do this with good placement, then it is very difficult for the other player the power the ball back past me.

    Tom, are you working on your jump rope routine? It's slight, but I see an improvement in foot speed compared to the critique in your previous video: czcams.com/video/LHTV4J5S6nM/video.html

    I disagree. I used to loop such balls, it works but the shot was not powerful and took me a lot of energy. I learnt from a more experienced player to flat hit such balls. I never use push against him, because as soon as the ball is a little higher than usual, he smashes it. I can do the same if the ball is pretty high. Just make sure that your bat angle and trajectory is perpendicular to the ball trajectory, so you may need to increase the angle of your bat.

      Yes, you can flat hit these balls, but it is more risky. The margin of error is lower. If the ball is very high, then it's easier. If ball is medium high, then it is harder. But some players do flat hit high backspin balls. I prefer to topspin, as it is very consistent.

    Im sorry but your services are with topspin my friend so the ball by the defender isn't with backspin

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  Před 4 lety

      Yes, my serve is with topspin and the other player has pushed the ball back, so the ball has been returned with some backspin. Quite simple really.
