      @@matthewchunk3689 Keith Jackson called MNF for several seasons, in addition to the Olympics and all sorts of other things. He just loved college football. And oh, how college football loved him. I would miss him regardless, but I especially miss him every time Gary Danielson opens his big stupid mouth.

    There will never be another announcer or man like him. So humble, knowledgeable and humorous. I met him briefly several years ago and he just had a way of making you feel that he had known you forever.

    The memories this guy gave me as a young man!! Whoa Nelly, we've got a barn burner here today at the Grannn- Daddy of them all.!! It's amazing what he did for college football and the charity work this man did.. A true American hero in my eyes who always kept it super clean and respectful!!

    Remembering Keith Jackson (1928-2018). The venerable sportscaster was known for his career with ABC Sports, and his intelligent yet folksy coverage of college football. He coined the phrase “Whoa, Nelly!, and was the voice of ultimate authority in college football.

      The phrase "Whoa Nelly!" originated with Pat Brady. Nelly was short for Nellybelle, the name of his cantankerous Jeep. He used the phrase in nearly every show while racing after the villains or rushing for help. Was a radio show before the tv show, 1944 to 1955.

      frankgh1 Whoa Nellie is a common Southern expression. I believe they are referring to his being the first to use it in sports broadcasting. Unfortunately, Dick Lane of KTLA television was using the phrase in his sports announcing a decade before Mr. Jackson started to broadcast.

    Sorry but Dick Lane who worked for KTLA (Paramount Studios) was using that phrase a good decade before Keith Jackson even went on the air. Now Mr. Jackson may have heard the phrase from his grandfather but he was not the first to use it in sports announcing. That honor belongs to Dick Lane.
