Keith was actually at his best *between* plays. The anecdotes, the wise little nuggets of truth, the absurdly poetic painting of a scene (a particular description of a sunset at Autzen Stadium sticks out in my mind). Keith just SPOKE....and it was gold.

Aaron Moreira - I can’t really disagree because Vin was (is) fantastic. The only reason I said what I did about Keith was that I remember him for that southern twang and his unforgettable sayings. If I were going to pick the best baseball announcer I ever heard it would probably be Vin. I just remember Keith for so many things other than baseball and mainly college football.

Being fair if you an American sports fan under 35 years old you probably don't remember Keith doing MLB baseball during the summers until the late '80's. (When ABC shared the MLB TV Contract with NBC) Keith's last MLB broadcast was the 1986 NLCS game 6 3-plus decades ago now. Very Underrated MLB Play-Play man. Mr. Jackson did say in an interview about 10-15 years ago that his favorite/best game of his career called not involving college football was the now legendary 1978 AL East tiebreaker game between the Red Sox and Yankees. AKA the Bucky Dent game. Also not known to younger sports fans is that Keith was the lead NBA play-play man for ABC in the early '70's (before it would not return there until 30 years later.)
A nice guy that never really had a bad word in public said about him. 1 way I hope Keith Jackson's memory continues is to name the college football hall of fame award for Broadcasters and Commentators be renamed name in his honor. RIP Nelly.

I’m surprised he doesn’t get more consideration for the Ford C. Frick Award to the broadcast wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame. His time broadcasting baseball was only slightly beyond the minimum ten years to be eligible, but he called so many post season series and other games on national TV that he was one of the voices of baseball then. It was always Keith Jackson on ABC and Joe Garagiola on NBC.

I had the opportunity to meet Keith twice & he was very down to earth & very personable. He was gifted in that he was very knowledgeable on the history of MLB, NFL & NCAAF for not only the teams in the "running" but also the perennial basement teams. A very nice man!!!!

Yes he did that here and on Reggie’s 3rd HR in 1977 but that’s a tribute to Keith in that he always maintained professionalism. Keith knew you could see what was happening so he didn’t intrude on your view. He knew Howard’s ego and to his credit to the viewers didn’t try to compete with Cosell.

  • @rahibjefferson6006

Although Cosell "stepped" on Keith, it was poetic. From what I read in Cosell's book, he respected Keith Jackson and thought Arledge did Jackson dirty by replacing him with Gifford on MNF. I never heard Jackson say anything negative about Cosell. To be honest, I thought their dynamic was legendary. Both guys could call a boxing match. After Cosell, Jackson was the best. Listen to Chacon vs. Limon 4 and Matthew Franlkin (Saad Muhammad) vs. Johnson II. Jackson called the hell out of a b rate fight like Carl Williams vs. Fergeson. R.I.P.

Whomever it was that knifed in to say "Chambliss is so hot, he's got his shirt unbuttoned, he's in heat!" before the dinger in the opening vignette did a hell of a job. The more I look back at Howard's work, the less I enjoy it and I used to like it more in my adolescence. I miss Keith, and have essentially lost the skillful work of Verne Lundquist. At least it's still here to find.
