you title says 1:4 borax to sugar, but the video shows 4:1 borax to sugar, which is correct?
What do you do when they dry up? Do you just add water to get it wet again and reuse? Or do you clean it out and start over with a fresh batch?
This works. I’ve done this two years in a row. I just soak the solution in a cotton ball and set it in high ant traffic areas. In two days, ants are gone.

Our great-grandmothers used borax as well but used confectioner's sugar. In fact, the old casters on Hoosier cabinets had a plate at the top of the caster to put the borax/sugar mixture in. This kept ants and bugs from crawling up the legs and getting into the supplies stored in the cabinet. Borax will also kill termites and makes a great cleaner for wood surfaces when mixed 1/2 cup to a gallon of water, but its most impressive use is for removing blood from clothing, upholstery, and mattresses. Just mix with water and dab on the fabric, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then shop-vac it out.
You were really wholesome and old timey until you started talking about blood removal. We're going to need to see your basement.

When i tried making this a few times it would harden into a brick so i decided to try just mixing sugar and borax without water. At 1st the ants ignored it but a few hours later every ant in my bathroom was on the tray trying to take it away in a line. Overnight they all disappeared except for a few that are very slow moving and dead. I did 1 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon. It works even in powder form.

I’m in TX and the red ants are ridiculous this year due to a lot of rain. I pour instant grits into the ant mounds and around my plants. The ants eat it and then it expands and makes them pop. Has to be instant grits.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I must have some stubborn ants. I am using 6:1 sugar to borax and am seeing minimal effectiveness. I am dealing with a very small species of black ant that seems to love sugar and find them indoors, and also a medium sized red fire ant that I don't see indoors. Neither of these seem to be drawn too much to the solution. I do get some of the tiny black ants going for it but not many and I have 8 or so jars at various areas surrounding my garden as well where I see them coming in and out of the house. Was really hoping this would work but might have to get more aggressive with chemical sprays.
Should also mention the tiny black ants are farming aphids anytime I see aphids so they are really becoming a nuisance in and out doors.
@@pulver117 if you add just enough water to the sugar and borax to make a paste i find that works best and on some kind of flat surface thats fast and easy for the ants to climb up on, it will attract them at first but after a wk or 2 you will see a huge difference

This literally worked overnight after ants got one of my cucumber plants. They were started on the cucumber next to it, but were gone when i got up. Ty gary
Thanks so much for this! I set 3 out yesterday, as one of my raised beds looked like it was moving on top due to so many tiny ants! Overnight, I have a total ant cemetery in one. The other 2 are oddly empty, but I'm sure some have wandered off and gone to aunt heaven. Huge reduction in activity over night! I also used 3 old washed out pasta sauce jars/lids that I always keep for random uses!

I see big amounts in my compost bin more often but usually a good watering gets rid of them. Dry soil attracts them. I also used D.E. and that got rid of them.

I’ve watched several videos on Borax and sugar and nearly all of them recommend 4 parts sugar to 1part Borax. I guess if the ants are attracted to the stronger mixture it should definitely work.
I don’t have any pets so I have been using the containers that strawberries come in….they already have holes in the bottom.
UGH! You are right! That is what I use and meant. Total cramp of the brain. I just adjusted the title and description. I may have to pull the video. UGH. Though there were ants on in the jar as I left it out.

FYI....Borax is safe if consumed (in moderation). They actually use as salt substitute in 3rd world countries. also good for fungal infections....its 99.9% Boron, which is needed in the body in small amounts

I really think this only applies to some types of ants. This is my first year gardening and so far, I can honestly say that if it wasn't for the ants, I wouldn't have 50 blooming peppers and cucumbers that are starting to produce immensely.
This is my second year into gardening. Lol, between the ants, wasps, and hornets taking out the pests, I agree, the garden would be eaten up and underdeveloped.
if it wasnt for leafcutter ants, my peach tree would have its leafs. these mfs didn't leave one on the tree. I tried the method of dumping a different ant mound on them so they would go to war. also tried hot water dumping on mound didn't work.
They need to be sugar eating ants

Try surround kaolin clay. It's used a lot for pests with fruit trees. I've heard many good results from other Gardners.

However, now that I've seen you use 'glass' instead of plastic food container I am much more likely to try this. One change I'll make is that I'll burn holes with wood burning tool into screw on plastic canning jar lids with silicone seals, so lids won't rust like metal lids will do.

I used this and it worked great. I had a problem with ants that I had never heard of before. They were preventing pollination of my tomatillos. Only the plants closest to the main ant holes were affected. The plants and blossoms were crawling with ants and I thought they would pollenate them but I had not one fruit on the plants until I killed off most of the ants (mid August). Then the fruit finally started coming. I don't know if the ants were eating the pollen or what. They also infested my squash blossoms and they had the same problem even when I hand pollenated them. Once the ants were under control, the squash started setting.

Got a pumpkin patch infested with tiny aphids and tiny ants. Cursed ants protect the aphids so I can't get predatory bugs to help out cause the ants protect aphids. And there's small amounts of mold popping up.

I thought you did a video on the ratio being opposite. 1 part borax 4-5 parts sugar. I watched a video on different ratios and ants went to them all. Most concentrated was 1 to 1 though.

Very confusing with saying 1 thing and doing the opposite for sugar to borax ratios. Will icing sugar work ?

Do they carry it to the nest or does it just kill the ants that eat it there in the jar?
It's supposed to last long enough that the ants eat it and then carry into the nest.
It does get to the nest. I imagine they share.

Not sure if you have tried it. But there's this stuff in a small bag for slug and snail invasions, lol, it's mini bait pellets. But you just sprinkle it in a circular pattern at the base of your veggies. It's safe and all natural. I found it whilst looking for something else, I can honestly say, this stuff is magical.

Omg I did 4 parts borax to 1 part sugar. I did 4 teaspoons borax, 1teaspoon sugar and slapped little spoonfuls near the ant holes by my strawberries. The ants rushed to the mixture tho and seem to be enjoying for now. I will check back later today.

@Gary Pilarchik Are earwigs beneficial in the garden or do they also eat the leaves of chilies and Zucchini....I have a lot of them on my chili plants and found 2 in a Zucchini that had a hole in it that started yellowing after it was half ripe.
I don't get them often. I would do a quick google search.

My crops are all in containers; ants in most of them; could I lay one of these jars in my containers on top of the soil or will they just stay on the plant? Also, if it dries out from heat can I just add a little more water?

Its chemical name is sodium borate or sodium tetra borate. That is the chemical know here as Borax. I would look for that under and its chemical name. I am not sure what else to replace it with.

I've read up on natural remedies such as mashed potatoes, boric acid, baking soda, aspartame etc... in various combos, to kill mice. Just discovered yesterday mice nibbling on my cucumbers and one of them must have nibbled on the base of the plant because now it's dead. Other gardeners are noticing their produce on the vine being nibbled.... do you have that issue and what do you do?
Mice... I have a red tailed hawk that hangs around my property and that helps. Traps otherwise.

Some ants dont eat sugar. So adding gelatin helps. It might.

Hi Gary, I did this for the ants and it didn't work for me. Maybe bc the humidity is so high here in Florida it all became a syrup and no ants went into the trap. Any suggestions?
Probably didn't work for you in Florida because you have Fire Ants, like we do here in Texas. I think those are the protein eaters that Gary was mentioning.

The actually drink it. So being liquid is okay. Some ants eat protein. Jello works for that. But this is not 100% effective

I have ants everywhere in my garden....and they don't hurt anything I plant......so what kinds of garden ants destroy crops? or is this just a sight thing for weak humans?
Ants like to put aphids on pepper plants so they can get the sugar they produce. I haven't seen it but that's the reason I do it.

Gary please give the cure for potato bugs, rollie pollies, etc. They have been decimating my garden beds. I have 5 raised beds and over 50 containers. Everything is mulched with straw and I know that serves as prime habit for them. They are heavily infested in 2 of my raised beds. They eat my eggplants and strawberries. I've tried DE to little success. What's the answer my man? Ty in advance.

It should stay in a jar. Direct pour might damage roots.

This trick has never worked for me. Neither has the cayenne pepper trick that I've seen used.
As long as the ants stay outside, I'm fine with it. If I see an ant or two inside, I don't worry too much. But, I think it was back in 2017, maybe a year or two earlier, I saw a whole string of ants coming in under the baseboard heater in the living room. I bought a shaker bottle of diatomaceous earth and sprinkled a good line of that under the heater. The ants didn't come back in after that.

what did you use to make the holes? my drill isn't able to make them. is there a special bit?
I have a drill that work but I have also just use a nail and hammer on the lid. Take lid off and flip it over on ground and punch in some holes.

Seriously? Did you just hear me yelling at the ants on the steps? 😅😆Edit: Just curious, I have ants that climb my sunflower stems. I’ve checked, but there are no aphids or other critters (except earwigs & Japanese beetles), and there’s no hill in the pot. Should I be concerned? I don’t want to bother them if I don’t have to…
If they aren't a variety of ant that damages plants, and they aren't farming aphids on your plants, there is no reason to bother the ants. They can actually be beneficial.
I’ve been keeping an eye on them, just to be sure. My only issue with ants in general is that 80% of the time they are too close to the house. Yes, I realize I’m the real intruder, but still… does anyone have an ant translator, so we can negotiate boundaries or something? 😆
