  • In the story of the six Schübler Chorales 'Kommst du nun, Jesu, vom Himmel herunter', performed by Bart Jacobs for All of Bach, stands for Advent. The cantata from which he took this aria have nothing to do with the birth of Jesus. The words of BWV 137 are jubilant in a more general way and were sung in the middle of the ecclesiastical year. The Christmas accent is added by sticking an alternative chorale text onto the music, even if we have to imagine it ourselves in this purely instrumental setting.

God the Organ is such an interesting instrument. As a pianist, I'd love to be able to play an Organ one day, even if just once.

A lot of Renaissance and Baroque music (not including the north German tradition) has easy pedal parts (or no pedal at all) and is good for pianists transitioning to organ.

Wahrlich genialer Organist!

Fine performance, very clear (despite quite noticeable reverb) and logical, also emotionally, thanks to the distinctive, yet not exaggerated use of rubato.

Hello Willem; there used to be available on the internet, a recording from St Bavo by Netherlands Radio from 1952 or thereabouts, of Piet Kee playing the improvisation that won him the Silver Tulip permanently. The marvellous organ sounded rather different then and Piet Kee became one of the organists there from 1956 so he would have been right there during the Marcussen (Sybrand Zachariassen who died in 1960) rebuild. He never indicated to me what he thought of the new sound; perhaps he was being diplomatic.
