Bach - Sonata no. 3 in D minor BWV 527 - Havinga | Netherlands Bach Society

- The opening of this sonata in D minor, performed by Matthias Havinga for All of Bach, has an uncertain and emphatically andante sound. To the ears of seventeenth and eighteenth-century musicologists the key of D minor represented melancholy, devotion, solemnity and seriousness. Following this tentative start, Bach launches into experimentation, by juggling motifs almost wildly and searching for new keys.

Thanks again dear I appreciate your support
The Dutch and their organs deserve superlative descriptions. The organs and the performers are literally made for each other. Also, I admire their beutiful churches. Deep, lasting Culture everywhere. 🧡
The last mvt of this sonata has one of the most fascinating subjects by merit of melodic shape and rhythm. It also has an incredible seriousness underlying a fireworks show of dance intrigue. Amazing.
The Bach trio sonatas may be the most wonderful pieces of music ever written. They are pieces that only the great master, JS Bach could have written! Beautiful playing on this wonderful instrument. Pieces that could only been inspired by almighty God -- to whom Bach was so devoted!
I agree totally. A Master piece.
Havinga shows us graceful hands and feet perfectly at ease in the treachery of Bach's magnificent notes.
Wonderful performance. Kudos also to Flentrop for maintaining this magnificent organ. It's easy to believe that Handel and a 10-year-old Mozart were drawn to play on it.
Beyond the din of history, beyond the dust of time, beyond the banality of us all, the genius of BACH remains. Would that one of us may have achieved in a lifetime what BACH achieved in a day.
Probably the most magnificent organ/case in the world. I will never forget walking in four years ago and turning to the right and being absolutely stunned. Luckily there was an organist there who was practicing, and I didn’t leave for the entire time. Naturally, he was playing Bach :)
The big Marcussen organ i Rotterdam in Grote Kert is in the same class...
@@Vindebyvej No, absolutely not
My very same experience two years ago. Fabulous
@@cromorno8749 And you say that because you have been there, seen and heard the Marcussen organ?
@@Vindebyvej I say that because I study with this two organs on my hauptwerk console
Ich habe die Sonaten auch gespielt. Die Wiedergabe von Matthias ist top. Top! Mon Dieu, danke, Matthias.
Of all the trio sonatas, I like this song the most. I will never forget the indescribable shock when I first heard it. It's been a long time since then, but it's still one of my favorite songs.
This is one of those videos I am going to come back to again and again. Bach’s genius is so rapturously apparent. The artistry of the organist is fully commensurate with that genius.
I have been in that church and heard that organ in person way back in 1994. It is absolutely stunning both visually and sound-wise. It is one of my favorite organs in the world, and Matthias Havinga is one of my favorite organists. I would have loved to have been there for this!
Very well said! Organ = J.S.Bach
@@caseyflorida The next time you visit the Netherlands try to hear the van Hagebeer/Schnitger organ in the Sint-Laurenskerk Alkmaar. If anything it is even more wonderful.
Absolutely in tears. This is one of my everyday conversations with God.
There is something different with this music , it's not a feeling it's not an impression it's the presence of something or someone big , huge you just can't describe it
What a precious dialogue!! Having a has the skill and wisdom to evoke such profound emotions. Magnificent retorica.
Thank you! Ian/ Canada
Not sure I would have survived this performance in person. My soul would have exploded out of pure elation.
Havinga great time listening to this!
Wonderful and Sound-full bach here, I love it.
Bach's musical work is eternal, for it reaches the depths of human soul!
Bravo bravo bravo bravo bravo fantastic
grandiose genial music
As always, splendid playing by the incomparable Matthias Havinga! Bravo! Fluid, flawless execution, and a clear separation of the voices ... not to mention the stunning instrument, and awesome photography! What more can anyone want?
👏👏👏💞💞✌
Sublissime Johannes Sebastian and Matthias🙏
This was my introduction to the Netherlands Bach Society. I listen to it often. (Subscribed soon after). From Chicago, U.S.A.
Where is the WOW button?
Beautiful playing on the organ of my birth place
Bach is profoundly, heavenly elevating, yet consummately grounding!
Superb Performance. Best Channel on CZcams.
I love the rendition of the second movement. Most soulfully played. Like a real conversation of human voice.
This middle movement was my first attempt to get into the organ sonatas. It was a magical discovery for me. At that time I had access to several pipe organs in various churches. All you needed was to build up a friendly and innocent relationship with the church secretary. They were usually in the church office during the day.
I woke up to this today. I sorely needed it. Thank you, kindly.
This heavenly played so beautifully.
Perfect tempo and phrasing : BRAVO !
A stunning performance. Many thanks. 👍❤️
The third part almost makes me cry with the beautifully transparent sound.
Wahrlich genialer Organist!
Magnificent! And that organ is a playable work of art.

What a beauty. Greatness. Loved the interpretation,.
First of all thank you to the NBS for making this work available for me to experience and appreciate. I must admit that I've not been familiar with this work before so it's a first time experience for me.
First experiences of any musical work makes a massive impression on a persons brain, and indeed I found this performance highly pleasing, comforting and satisfying. I am certain that I shall return many times to experience this work.
My chief (English colloquialism) "beef" is the description is of the written description of the key of D Minor in this work. I'm no musicologist by any means but a complete music lover and "worshipper" of Bach's compositions and so I was hoping for a better clarification of Bach's use of the key of D Minor in this work. Indeed it sound very unusual.
As always my immense gratitude to NBS for presenting this video for my enjoyment, and indeed I have experienced tremendous joy from the performance from Matthias Havinga and please pass my warmest thanks to him and to all at NBS who have made this video possible for me to watch and enjoy. As Always, Greetings to you all form Port Morseby, Papua New Guinea.
Great to read that you enjoy this music so much!
A bit more explanation about the key of D minor (and this work) can be found on our website: www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/bwv-527/
But as always with Bach’s music: you don’t need in-depth knowledge to just love his music!
Wonderful playing,in particular the second movement, truly sublime!thank you for calm amongst chaos 🙏
Magnificent performance! I've got chills!
Very nice, a dream of harmony and peace 🌺🎶...Bach
Wonderful interpretation and gorgeous organ!
1st part is my favorite, i'd enjoy hearing trio sonata's no. 4 too 😻
Wunderschöne Musik, wunderbar gespielt, danke vielmals!
Beautiful interpretation and regisration. Fantastic.
No organ sounds as magnificent, uplifting, rich, high fidelity, as a Dutch-built organ. To me, they are magical!
Une merveille musicale de ce génie .

Beautiful interpretation. I love it.

Absolument magnifique merci !
Simplesmente maravilhoso!!! Uma viagem a belos acessos da alma!!! Soberbo!!👏👏👏🇧🇷
Incrível, não é? Bach é um milagre! (Bom ver outros brasileiros apreciando essas maravilhas)

That Vivace movement is something else to play! I managed to learn the first two movements, then I looked at the third movement and immediately switched to look at Sonata #4.......
I know some Brazilian organists that told me to not use 16 stops for the pedals all the time: I think they are mistaken, because we must remember among many details the central movement of the 2nd trio sonata, BWV/S. 526 as clear example.
Wonderful music in a wonderful church
Dear @Logan 5,
What does this have to do with the comment?
@Logan 5 Fortunately, no.

Please publish the 4th trio sonata, I think it's the greatest of the trio sonatas!
This is gorgeous. What is the registration? Is that an oboe on the swell or clarinet? Is there a mutation stop?
What a beautiful instrument! Saving this one for later listening.😁🎵🎶🎵👍 *EDIT:* Did anyone happen to notice how much wear is on the pedal board? You *know* that organ has been around for a while.😉
Splendid !
Ausgezeichnet! Vielen Dank!
