Welcome to the wonderful world of the Cocteau Twins. 🙂 There’s no other band like them. For future reference, you’re not meant to understand the lyrics in CT songs. The singer Elizabeth Fraser would purposely make them illegible, and sometimes just string together random words, foreign words or gibberish. It’s more about the feeling of the music and the voice being used as an instrument.

I would add that as a Scot, sometimes she sings purposefully very Scottish and it IS understandable if you are a Scot.

I love it when people are like "well, I don't know Scottish English or Gaelic" and it's like.... nope. That's not what's happening here. Elizabeth is just vocalizing.

    • @aspect57
      @aspect57 Před rokem +1

Pop song? Hmmm.... I think the deliberate obfuscation makes it not pop. Just cos it's shoegaze from a time and place doesn't make it pop. So many shoegaze bands aren't pop really. But I agree it's a masterpiece!

You're on a roll. Liz Fraser is one of the great singers of the 20th century & the Cocteaus are one of the most influential bands of the past 40 years. Their catalog is wide & unique: not one bad track, each album is different, & of incomparable _beauty._
There are few Cocteau lyrics - Liz mostly sings in her own invented language - think of her as a magical opera singer. You've heard her voice in the _Lord Of The Rings_ movies & with Massive Attack.
_Treasure_ (1984) is a classic starting point - Cocteaus are essential for living. Keep going.

Robin Guthrie’s layered guitar is unique! This song is a marvelous showcase of his layering it such that one chord flows into the next like liquid music. This was a hallmark of Cocteau Twins. His solo stuff is very chill and great for relaxing to. Elizabeth Fraser is also an amazing and avant-garde talent. Don’t worry trying to understand her when singing, this is one of her more understandable songs. She’s known for completely making up words and singing them in songs. She like to be more of an instrument than a vocalist.

I'm glad you've had a chance to peer down into the Cocteau Twins rabbit hole. The band pretty much created the genre of shoegaze or 'dream pop.' The lead singer, Liz Frazer, mostly sings in her own made up language, much like improvisational jazz vocalists. Every now and then there are songs with lyrics or refrains, but just let the sounds take you where ever they take you. Some other good songs to follow up with are "Carolyn's Fingers," "Pearly-Dew Drops," "Ice Blink Luck," and "Cherry-colored Funk." Frazer also does a breathtaking cover of "The Song to the Siren," as a member of the group This Mortal Coil. Your description of being 'drowned in the music' is pretty apt. After I listen to a Cocteau Twins album, it always feels like I'm coming up for air after swimming underwater for a long time.

    Maybe there
    He was there
    This is hardly personal
    I suspect I'm singing to a tune
And still find that beat is
    Singing to you soon
    **
These are the closest I've found to what the words may be. Some people say she is singing about the King or Jack of Hearts card. Elizabeth promises that she has all of her lyrics locked away in a vault, and she is not sharing. The Cocteaus create music to completely envelope you. That is on purpose. You're right, it is like a psychedelic trip. If you listen to her for more than 10, 20, or 30 years, you will understand more of what she sings.
She also did a lovely song with Peter Gabriel, from Peter's OVO album. Peter Gabriel, Elizabeth Fraser & Paul Buchanan - *Downside Up* - studio version and also a live version on Later with Jools Holland.

Cocteau Twins are one of the biggest underrepresented artists in the "reaction community" lol. In terms of record sales, at least in the US, they were extremely niche. In terms of impact, their influence can be heard in...basically everything. But I will forewarn you--- since most music reactions really place a strong focus on lyrical analysis, prepare to be resoundingly thwarted: Elizabeth Fraser's lyrics are (mostly) utterly indecipherable. And, they never published lyrics (other than snippets and excerpts) so if you read lyrics online, they're (again, mostly) wrong.
You should so do a 4-video reaction marathon! Cocteau Twins didn't produce a huge number of music videos, but the ones that exist really have visual and emotional impact. Watch *Love's Easy Tears* (1986), *Iceblink Luck* (1990), *Evangeline* (1993) [understandable lyrics!], & *Tishbite* (1996).

I know you are big on vocals when reacting and Cocteau Twins's Elizabeth Fraser is really a rare gem when it comes to it. Once she was even described as "the voice of God". This is not their ideal song to react to but it was the most popular in the USA. Please check Alice, Flock of Soul, Carolyne's Fingers, Rilkean Heart, Eperdu, and Seekers Who Are Lovers to get the full beauty of her voice. And yes, I think everyone mentioned already, most of her songs do not have understandable English lyrics so don't bother trying to understand. Treasure is my favorite album of theirs but it is definitely a deeper dive. I'd give Four Calendar Cafe and Heaven or Las Vegas a try first :)

Its interesting that you say you feel like you're drowning in the song because Fraser's ex and rising star musician, Jeff Buckley drowned in an accident. There's a lot of imagery in Cocteau Twins lyrics that eerily prophesied it before it happened.

Treasure is their best album but Heaven Or Las Vegas is arguably just as good. I think some rappers sampled them.

If you enjoyed this song then you'll definitely enjoy the rest of their album. In my opinion, this track is one of the weaker ones from the album. So, you can only imagine how great the rest of it is! Just my humble opinion though because I'm sure you noticed that video has a lot of views.

After this, I think people will tell you to check out My Bloody Valentine ... but if it were me? I'd tell you - play Lush first, especially "Nothing Natural."
Of course, My Bloody Valentine are great. Any of their 1991 album offerings.
Also: anything by The Sundays from 1990-1993...

Have a look at Elizabeth Fraser and Jeff Buckley singing the unreleased unfinished in their minds….All flowers in time point towards the sun.
You can only find it on CZcams hence the fact they never released it.
