3D Printing and Testing the Makerbot Coin Sorter

- We have lots of coins at the house, so I thought it was time I 3d printed a coin sorter. I found one on Thingiverse, and printed it twice. Once on the Ultimaker 3 using Colorfabb HT, and once on the Lulzbot TAZ6 using Polymaker Polylite PLA.

Your reaction to the first try with the quarter was priceless. đ
:)
*fail trumpet sound* *seinfeild theme*
Actually, it cost a quarter
"here we go"
*coin got stuck*
"alright"
Story of my life.
Its not a coin sorter if you have to take every single coin in your hand to put it into that contraption.... You could just skip the plastic thing and sort by hand
plus sorting by hand is fun
Good point :)
It's made by people without critical thinking skills, for people without critical thinking skills.
Mabey if you could somehow make it so you can put a hand full of coins in and it sorts them out then this would be a lot faster machine.
well, at least I only need to put coins there, not going through all coins, look at them and put the coin into the right pile
could put the wrappers in the slots to keep them from being ejected.
Inconsistent Manner this would be the solution cause even if you brought your change to the bank they'll tell you to put it in wrappers if you want paper bills as change
WRAPPERS! Of course!
Dumb how you need to wrap it yourself. It's a bank. It's their job to count your money that you're giving them. Lol
could have some 3d printed mechanical part that ticks off and counts for you
I just bring my shit to the bank and they dump it in their automated sorter. No charge like coinstar.
"What can you expect?"
"I guess it works some of the time, because it's a Makerbot model"
"That was a joke."
5:00
Definitely not slamming Makerbot there Joel ;) - Had noticed you don't currently own a replicator
I did ! I got a refund :3
Can I ask what was wrong with it? If I had that kind of disposable income I would have seriously considered getting one. :/
You should read this - blog.adafruit.com/2015/07/09/the-class-action-lawsuit-of-makerbot-stratasys-begins-makerbusiness/
Heh, I sure don't. Makerbot has no idea that I even exist! :)
My university have 3 Replicator 2X's and a Replicator 5th gen. All of them are broken :v
Thankfully the 2X's are still hackable. I already gave up on the 5th gen >.
This makes so much cents!
Yes, I coin see how that's funny ;) .
CNCmachiningisfun POUNDing out the jokes there I see.
Luke Diggle
LOL.
I was just cashing in on the laughs here ;) .
TackStash779 that was very PENNY (punny)
These jokes are coming just in Dime for a good laugh.
@1:57 ...Alright
THAT GUY. LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE MARKIPLIER LIKE HE COULD BE HIS DAD
Right? I mean, I *am* old enough!
His dad is dead....
I know that was my first thought
I THOUGHT THE SAME THING HAHAHA
Logan Bloom what I thought
Now that I live in Japan I wish I had one of these for Japanese Yen. Living in a cash based society makes me really miss not having to mess with coins back in the US.
They must have a Yen version of a coin sorter somewhere.
I'd look at some communities... If there's a need commonly there's a solution nowadays. Tons of people with tons of time might have made it already
Japan still uses cash ?
That PLA print almost looks like it was injection molded. I wish I had a 3D printer to just print random useless knickknacks. PS I think you should try printing that coin sorter but with the Formlabs printer and see how that goes
Every time I see this in my recommended I read it as coin snorter.
+Lost Evesy hahaha every time I see the title I see the same thing - and I'm the one that made it! Ha!
I would pay to see a coin snorter. Also would be very confused.
I thought the thumbnail said coin snorting
Thankfully THAT wasn't the video. That would hurt!
I started this video with a mound of ground up pennies. Now I am lost.
OH NO!
XD
I use a coin sorter, but the model could be better. Personally the slot's in the side need to be narrower and be able to remove each coin stack tube separately so the coins can more easily go directly into a coin wrapper (I still use paper coin wrappers that are free from my bank). ... Oh, my sorter, it is old, probably 25 years and injection molded plastic. I guess I should do a model so other can 3D print a similar sorter.
Oh yeah, the coin wrappers! I didn't even think about that.
You look like Markiplier's Brother...
+Agent700 you think so?
I was going to say the same thing! Same deep voice!!
I tought the exact same thing !
he should be his stuntman
yeah like white Markiplier
That looks cool! It looks like those coin sorting bottles that I used to have years ago :) now they're almost gone in my country since we don't use coins anymore :)
I got a coinsorter as an atvertisement gift and I just thought of printing one in a cool design just yesterday... And then I see this video. I think I should print one once my printer arrives :)
Have to place each coin in by hand, curvature of the upper spiral is too sharp for coins to consistently slide down due to their different diameters, viewing slots in the holding chambers are so wide the smaller coins just bounce out. 95% of this coin sorter's problems are its shit design, not the materials or printers they were made on.
What wrong with critiquing a design
for some reason on the thumbnail i thought it said coin snorting not coin sorting lol
Heh, dude, SO many people said that, and now it's hard NOT to see it!
OK, now I need to go and print a UK coin version of this. Thanks, Joel - you've added to my list of things to print! :)
5 years late :')
How did it go? I was thinking the same but dismissed the idea after thinking about the shame of 20 and 50 pence.
Hey Joel i I so you get this question very often but what printer would you recommend under 1000$ ?! I was looking at the creality cr-10 any thoughts ? A couple hundred above 1000$ is also fine but am looking for a large printing space thanks in advance !
Hey, you should do a review on a Anet A8.
Will there be a collab with Dimone Giertz? Or was it just a one time high five at CES?
I flew down to the Tested offices and collaborated with Simone and Sean Charlesworth on a Prusa build. It was neat! Once they publish that video I'll share the link!
Too bad it was premium content, paywall. :/
I like that you print lots of diff ones. Cool comparisons
I have the Lulzbot TAZ 5 and I've had to tinker with it a ton through the years just to get a complete print. What's available now (2023) for 1/6th the price is far better in every way. So much better that no one should still be suffering with a 2015 printer.
Nice design but anythign that requires you to add 1 coin at a time is no more eficient than rolling them manually. I'd like to see you mod this to just let you dump handfulls of coins in.
I swear this said "coin snorting" when I first saw it
+bionicle apple it did. I changed it with magic. It required shaved unicorn horn, but it was worth it.
cool print. the blue makes the print pop. might have to print one of those coin sorters for the center console of the cab of my motorhome.
oh there you go! and yes, the blue is crazy good! I love it!
This is awesome! Love your videos!
Wow, thank you so much!
Is that a slime from the slime rancher game in the background?
Yes it is!
When I saw the title I thought it said coin snorting and I though "well that's no bueno"
Indeed!

Cool to see the print. Thanks for sharing. My daughter saw your video and started going off on wanting to print and make all sorts of things. :)
That is AMAZING to hear! I love it when something I do inspires a kid to go off and do cool stuff! Keep me up to date on what your daughter prints and makes!
5:18 that was the most satisfying sound ive ever heard.
Right?! so good.
Did anyone else think the thumbnail said "Coin Snorter"?
+Keegan DoesStuff dude, I made the video and *I* kept saying "coin snorter"!
3D Printing Nerd XD at least I'm not the only one
Keegan DoesStuff Yeah thats what i thought it said
It does. The n is greyed.this was almost definayely intentional.
He sounds like "markiplier"
wow the blue one looks injection molded such a good print
tighten the slits around the coin holders and remove the bottom of each cylinder, when you're done pull up the coiner sorter and look at your piles of coin.

I printed a few of these a while ago, the best coin sorter on thingiverse is the basket looking one, but you have to shake the baskets to sort the coins
and no holder for them but its the fastest one to use and most accurate
The basket one? I don't know that one - have a link?
www.thingiverse.com/thing:30665 its a little small, if your doing a lot of coins best to design your own about 2x as large but for couple handfuls at a time it works really well. just shake it sideways and they all sort I did the same one you did, and also had issues with coins flying out the holder tube, I suppose you could possibly add more material to the slots to prevent the smaller coins from flying out.
This is a very cool idea! I think I will design one for my coins.
I enjoy all of your vids, Joel. The variety is refreshing (why I remain a Patreon supporter). A request for successful prints: providing the settings would be helpful for folks trying to dial in the same slicer/printer/filament combo. A "one stop" public settings repository (Wiki or ?) for these slicer/filament brand/printer combinations would be a huge time saver for the community. Any help to achieve quality prints faster so I can focus more on refining what is being printed is welcome.
That's a GREAT idea! Thank you for the suggestion!
I love your rock slime in the background! What's it printed with and on?
The rock slime was printed on the Prusa i3 mk2 I believe in Polysmooth filament!
3D Printing Nerd I had to ask, I know you're not too keen on finishing prints, and it looks amazing. (plus, it's a great little slime)
Wow the blue one looks perfecinial
+Lego Phonatic agreed!
Nice coin sorter. For a few months I have been thinking of making one for Euro coins. Never took the time though.
High Five for this nice video, again :-)
Thank you! Yes make one!
You can just modify the step file for the sorter so that the coins fall into bins, or so that they fall into a cartridge for your coin sleeves
I think a shaker tray would be the best style of sorter for 3d printing.
I had a coin Snorter once.... was painful and didn't work out to well, 3DPN Where is the face mount ?
Hey man really love the work! Keep it up!
Well, thank you very much! If you're not John, then who are you?

I've never seen your channel before and this is the first video I watched and I recognized that little armadillo thing on the left because it was featured on thingiverse a few weeks ago.
+cheeseman yes it was! It's the Pangolin
I think you could remedy problems with both prints fairly easily. With the Colorfabb, maybe just a light sanding? The other one, you could probably either make a door to cover the open slots on the coin collectors or adjust the original model to make the slots just a little thinner. Anyway, good video as always.
What if it slid down flat rather than on it's edge? It makes it a bigger print but you're able and it would prevent a few of the problems you're experiencing
Joel, all f that looks like fun, if you want to sit around putting coins in a machine as you would if feeding a parking meter. My wife asked me if I would help her sort through our coin jars to get some quarters for our daughter to use at a laundromat. We did it but it took about 15 minutes to get a decent quantity. I was so disgusted by this exercise that I resolved to come up with something much easier. It took me a couple of tries but my coin sorter takes a handful of random coins and sorts them into four separate trays in about three seconds. It doesn't put them into sleeves, I just wanted to differentiate between the different denominations of coinage.
I was laughing so hard when he put the quarter in, like, when he put it in and it didn't go through he looked so disappointed, and then he said "Well that didn't work as expected"
Where are the blueprints / technical dimensions for this, genius by the way, would love to make a few tiny personal adjustments though.
Hy, Do you have any video with the Creatbot DE PLUS or Similar printer ?? ( Thanks )
what printer do you use? I want to get a 3D printer but I don't know any thing about 3D printers
3 years earlier ! Love the save Pangolin on your desk ;-)
you can try using paper coin rolls that should prevent the coins from falling out through the sides, plus you won't have to put them into rolls later
put a cone on top with walls around it, so you can drop them all in and they will slide down vertically.
behold! Joel Telling, the magical coin snorter
Hi, this looks great! love it. the only concern i have with 3D printing is the material they are using, are they using plastics? I don't want to see more wasted materials into the ocean because of this invention. just my thoughts....
Hay jole whatâs the best 3d printer for about 500$or less that Hays real good quality and is the Anet a3 a pretty good printer I like that box closed in type model so what would you recommend if you donât mind me asking
you could put tape over the front of the slots to avoid those falling out
pretty neat video. I like that design.
Thank you!
Great video Joel
Thank you!
0:17 "it makes cents! "đđđ
sounds like cura could use some upgrading to make custom profiles easier so you can use filaments that don't have there sensor in there telling what it is
I think that's a good point - I like the way Simplify3D has "filament" presets.
Nice Video!
what if you put coin rollers in the slots they might not fall out?
so I'm a noob to 3-D printing... is there a way I can get a code (I think that's how it works) and does it work on any 3-D printer
It wouldn't solve the problem that much, but maybe putting a slant angled towards the center of the piece where the coin falls would reduce from the amount of coins escaping? Since the coin impacts the flat stopper at the bottom, maybe the slant will allow the coins to bounce and slide into place correctly without pouring out. Not sure if the circumference of the sorter slots would have to be distorted or increased, but could be a possibility?
Oooh, a slight angle. I see what you're saying. That may work!
honda camino front mask can this be made would just find the piece almost not making and making it yourself would be cool and you can choose the color yourself
1:52 he is so serious đ
need to add a funnel that is slanted in a way that puts the coins at the top hole
Would this work with Australian coins? Or can you possibly make models for it?
if I have one at home how do I get that model to print on mine
Are those 3d printed benders from futurama for sale?
A way to keep the coins from falling out of the chamber is to adjust the size of the hole on the side of the coin chamber to match the coin size. I noticed you have all of the chambers with the same size hole in the side besides the 50 cent chamber. I don't have really any 3D printing or CAD experience but my theory is that if you make the holes in the side of the chambers different sizes in reference with the size of the coin, you can avoid the coin just falling out of the chamber. I assume that even with smaller holes in the side of the chambers you would still be able to get your coins out when you need them. I hope that my theory will be helpful with your next model of the coin sorter.
you can add another piece in the top that allow u insert the coin like those one in the bending machines.
That's not a bad idea!
"That was a joke." Except it wasn't cause that's what you can expect from a Makerbot. That's the reason I sold mine.
Does that allow for putting in paper coin rolls??
4:43 should you try to do the holes smallest to largest or would that not work? đ€
duuude love it
that gap needs to be narrower
DUDE! thank you!
(Im british) i always sort my coins into âbronzeâ, âsilverâ and pounds, i keep the pounds in my wallet or in a small jar if thereâs too much, my âsilverâ coins in a normal money bank and my âbronzeâ coins in a big tin money bank then when theyre both full, i take them to a coinstar machine and get banknotes that i keep in a place even i forget about
Can anyone link the model? I can't seem to find it on thingiverse or yeggi...
where can i download a copy of this coin sorter?
Is that a rad rock largo in the background?
whats the best 3d printing material
What do you Do with Failed prints?
I laughed so fucking hard when the first coin didn't go through. Just the "alright" was the funniest thing ever
Inside I was all, "Play it cool, Joel, play it cool..."
would love to see the bright spark that catered for the 50 cent piece lol
Hi, just found your channel love it, I found it ironic that my name is Joel Tilling haha and also I am thinking about getting a 3D printer as I start a design course in September however I don't know were to start any suggestions?
You have to put the coin rolls in the slots, it will work better that way
do smaller coins in the front, because what's preventing the penny from falling into the quarter slot? you want it to go dime, penny, nickel, quarter
It looks like the dime and penny openings on the front need to be smaller.
neat sorter and video.
Cool
Hey Joel if you still have the Zortrax, I would give the colorfabb HT a go with Z-Ultrat settings. They have similar printing temperatures I think.
I do! But it's broken and I'm waiting for parts.
I got the formlabs printer too. its damn awesome. nice video
I guess you need a coin sorter for every coin
That white (transparent?) filament does not show up well under video, it is hard to see the shape.
