  • This is a quick tutorial on how to measure a vinyl window, you always measure the day light (frame to frame, just a visible glass part) and add 7/8" , technically to get it exact you need to add 1", but sometimes window frame settles, shifts and bows so you want to be on a safe side and make it a little smaller. Does this method apply to both the slider and stationary windows?

So every window is 7/8 or 1 inch add to the glass to glass measurement's? to be sure you say 7/8 right.

99% of vinyl/plastic windows is 1” add to daylight but to be on a safe side I do 7/8” add because sometimes window settles and frame shifts a little. Or you can always pop the snap/glazing bead off to expose the edges of the glass and measure it that way.

Always take the window bead off and get a true measurement

Just go to your local glass shop/supplier. You don’t need to be a contractor to buy glass.

I’m afraid the homeowner would show up with a clear over clear unit and then wonder why that glass doesn’t match their low E glass installed.

The only part you got right was measure width first then height, a qualified Glazier can tell thickness of unit by looking at the space bar, and also, you measure in millimeters not inches, yes I'm over 25 yrs in trade so know what I'm on about here👍

I can tell the thickness of the glass by just looking at a window brand , this video was intended for people that are not familiar with our work and want to do it themselves. And you are right about millimeters, but I doubt an avatar joe understands that or have a metric tape measure here in the states.
