Tension mounts in the final episode of Ashes to Ashes as DCI Gene Hunt and his team are investigating a diamond heist following the murder of three London gang members. In this clip, Jim Keats tries to get Alex to trust him but she is suspicious of who he really is.

Without exaggeration, that episode was the best finale episode of the best television series, IMO. So good that it ended on a high, rather than continue to run until it got stale, like a lot of other series.

Danny Mays is one fantastic actor to make a character so detestable.
Keeley's delivery of 'Why? Why would he?" is utterly perfect. She really wants to trust Gene.
Such a creepy moment in the series. Watching it now is even more difficult, given what we learn about the characters...
I really want Gene just walk in and beat Keats up! The bloody creep needs to learn to keep his hands off
***Spoiler Alert*** Jim Keats was a soul collector for Satan, Gene was a dead cop who'd forgotten he was dead & ended up staying in Limbo as a ferryman for other officers who'd past into his world & he only remembered his death thanks to Alex discovering his corpse & his badge was inside the shallow grave

It’s probably open to interpretation but it’s likely that he wanted to stay behind and help other officers who have passed into the world as well as live out the life of an officer he never had as he died quite young.
@@MrLethalShots Exactly this. Gene wanted to continue to be the ferryman. He saw what someone like Jim would do to mislead people astray and send them to Hell. Gene knew he wanted, or needed, to continue to ferry good cops to Heaven so they could be saved.

@RubyCosmos Haha I know. That would be a pretty well thought out storyline though. Also, at the end of the second series Gene is angry at Alex when she says she's from the future and then it's never mentioned again. That could reflect him and be another sign that he's in denial.
I have just finished watching it, the ending was so awesome and it gave me hope that Gene Hunt will not always be alone.
omg it was amazing!! but the only thing i cant work out is that alex remembered getting shot but not chris, ray and shaz
I think it’s because Chris, ray and shaz were killed basically instantly with no chance of living, while as Sam and Alex had a slim chance of survival which is why they remember their lives but the others don’t. Chris ray and shaz were dead in the real world but in coppers purgatory since they didn’t move on from the real world.
Anyone else think the violin music at 1:53 to 1:55 sounds a bit like the Devil's music from the Impossible Planet and the Satan Pit?
I kind of think this scene's appropriate, whether Jim is the devil or some kind of evil archangel, to Gene's Gabriel, he should be seductive to lull Alex over to his side. I also think he's sort of hot, but not when he goes all Lucifier on us at the end.
It actually does sound kinda similar. Also funny seeing as the actor for Jim appeared in series 6 of Doctor who too

Keates there is no competition. Any woman in their right mind would choose Gene Hunt over you!
@chupachupcherry That could have just been an introduction to the characters he created. The point may not be where they come from but that them being trapped in another world reflects Gene Hunt and also when the people who used to work with Gene in Manchester came down it wouldn't make sense that they'd appear in a world Alex had created because it isn't likely that Sam wrote about them in the file that Alex read.
'This world Gene's carefully built for himself.' I think says it all. And the way Keats goes 'Shhhhh' is really creepy for some reason, every time.
I hate him touching her, it feels so wrong. Keats doesn't understand - Gene can't be the bad ass for one simple reason: he's Hunt.
Ever notice how Keats always takes his glasses off when he deals with Alex one-on-one, & how he did it when he was trying to convince Shaz to leave the force? There has to be something to that -- more than how he's trying to make himself "vulnerable". The plot coagulates . . . .

Hate Keates for trying to come in between Alex and Gene and trying to take advantage of Alex while she's upset!
Compared to LOST this had a much clearer ending. Very emotional like the other show, but it answered everything for me. I loved Sam Tyler but it didn't spoil the story him not being there. LOVED the fact that salvation is in the pub! Typically British! Please GOD don't let the american's try and remake this!!! Their LoM was awful!
Jim scared the crap out of me in this episode. What a creepy, evil bastard he is. When he put his hands on Alex I was shouting at the TV "Nooo, get off her, you can't take her Keats!" Great, great show. I'll miss it. :-(

I think that Ray, Chris and Shaz police officers, that are all in Comas, from different times, along with Alex (they are the only ones to have seen "Stars"). Gene Hunts role is to keep them sane, and recover. Only Alex is smart enought to work out something isn't right, and the world they are in, isn't real.....
Keats IS a "Angel of Death" with in the Coma World all 4 are "living" in! Any officer that has been injuried and he has touched has quickly died! GENE HUNT ROCKS
@aimeefran He especially would because Keates is trying to expose Gene as a murderer and the best time for Gene to have killed him was when Keates first threatened him in the first episode because this was before Keates had started to turn people against him.

@nomie2005 My mum has a theory that all along it has been Gene's imagination rather than Sam's or Alex's. Well we will soon find out!
@EEWW2006 I don't know..They said that Sam died in 2005 earlier in the series. I get the feeling that the writers are a bit too lax with continuity.

@RubyCosmos That would make it Gene's world not Alex's or Sam's and Jim says they challenged his world, so maybe Gene is in denial that the world he is in isn't real and Alex and Sam are challenging this. Now the world is falling apart around him because his subconscious is telling him that it isn't real.
@Chicagofairy She did indeed, either Jim didnt know that or its a massive continuity hole. Im going for the former as the writers know better than that :)

How exactly was it poorly written? It was all explained and made sense and there was good characterization with some emotional bits. Couldn't have asked for a better ending.

Hmm seeing everybody angry at Keats and totally having it off for him has started to make me think that maybe he's actually the good guy...

Whatever happens I think this is Gene's world but it could be that Alex and Sam are real too and have ended up there.
So the dead policeman being revealed as Gene and that he was a bit different when he was alive from what we know of him from the rest of both series wasn't enough of a twist to you?

@Novindalf I hoped Annie might be a DS by now...
I'm not sure how either getiing runned down or shot leads you to either travel through time or sends you to an alternative reality. And frankly if they had gone for one of those then this would probably leave a lot of people feeling confused and calling it nonsensical. That's why it's probably better to give them something that makes more sense and is more familiar and understandable.

Weren't we told that Sam and Annie were married? Danny Mays plays this role really well (less over the top in this scene and less comic villain) but have to say that I am not sure that I like where this is going. The world Gene has built for himself.... please don't tell me that Alex isn't real!!!

@chupachupcherry damn this is so confusing my mum said maybe everyone in that worl is in a coma well all the important people anyway and they've just imagined everyone else and i don't know i suppose that is a possibilty but im not sure

Really there was only so many explanations there could have been that would make sense. Either it was all in sam and alex's heads and none of it was real or it was real and this was the afterlife or purgatory. And if it was all just in their heads then that would mean that the characters we had come to know and love like Gene, ray and chris were never real and no longer existed. That would have been a cheat and an undeserving end to these characters.
Keep your hands off Alex you creep! Come on Gene...where's the gene genie magic? You can see that I'm going to really miss A2A. Sad already ;-(

Seems a lot of people on here want Alex and Gene to kiss and walk off into the sunset together. What an inspiring and memorable ending that would (will?) make... lol And I find Jim Keats scary too, but hating him just cause he's interfering with your fantasy?... jesus christ : |

From real time travel, alternative realities, a conscious world, Jim Keats actually being a corrupted Sam Tyler from whatever state his brain was in from the fall. There was alot to play with. It didn't have to go religious.

@mummra4ever Yes, it did make sense, as so would writing "And then it all turned out to be a dream" to any good book. This doesn't make it good writing.
I wanted more from this series, it deserved it. An afterlife is cliche, unimaginative and dull in my opinion. I prefer plot twists that make me go ooooh. As it did in the first series. As I said to start with, would of liked something a bit more clever.
A clear end to the series... but.. I felt it was poorly writen and something more clever could of been writen in.
@MultiBubbles5 exactly! If gene really had murdered as many people as Keats is trying to make out then Gene wouldn't think anything of getting rid of Keats! So my faith is in gene being innocent :) However, if it turns out he is a murderer he'd better shoot keats!! ;D
