    Arkansas and Missouri
Or as many say “Missour UH” and wait a second, why is Arkansas pronounced like that? Well, that’s another video, buddy. Check it out.
    Anyway, Missouri and Arkansas
The Show-Me State and The Natural State
Two bordering states where the South kind of meets the West and Midwest in THESE United States
And, I know I have talked some trash about Missouri throughout my life being a Kansas boy, but I gotta admit it’s one of my favorite places to visit, and I only don’t visit Arkansas as much since it’s a bit further of a drive for me.
There’s a relatively new rivalry between the sports teams of the two major universities in each state. (Missouri Tigers and Arkansas Razorbacks). The football rivalry is known as The Battle Line Rivalry.
Missouri is a Midwestern state, but much of Southern Missouri kind of makes it seem like a Southern state. Arkansas is definitely a Southern state, but parts of it, like Northwest Arkansas in particular, somehow feel Midwestern. So if you like the South and Midwest, these two states are for you.
The population of Missouri is more than twice that of Arkansas.

So yeah, now that you know I'm doing repeats, what should I compare Maryland, Michigan, Iowa, and Oklahoma to?

As an Arkansan, I love this video. But, one thing that a lot of people don't realize about the Little Rock Nine is the effect all the mess had economically. At the time, Little Rock and Atlanta were roughly the same size in terms of population and economy. Because of all the racial tension, a lot of businesses left the central part of the state in favor of other states. Just a little bit of history that explains some of Arkansas' modern problems.
Regardless, I love my home state and all the amazing places and people that live here. Woo Pig Sooie

      @Bones_McGee_ Před 2 lety +8

@@bluedream6462 That is indeed correct, while Atlanta did have roughly 1.5 times the population of Little Rock, the little Rock area (including surrounding suburbs) had a pretty similar economic size. While Little Rock did gain population during the 1950s, it was stunted, and we lost a good portion of the economy. Little Rock was small, and still is small, so the loss of businesses just hit that much harder.

@@Bones_McGee_ I was comparing the metro areas and 3 years after the central nine incident Atlanta was 4x as large. I couldn't find data on the economies of either place, but I'd imagine it wasn't that close with the populations being so different. Maybe if things had gone better for Little Rock it's size and economy would be more comparable to Memphis and Birmingham today.

As a KCMO’er, I love the nature in southern Missouri and Northwest Arkansas. There’s a hiking challenge known as “The Triple O” and consists of hiking the 3 longest hiking trails in each state. There’s the 223 mile Ouachita Trail, the 164 mile Ozark Highlands Trail, and the 230 mile Ozark Trail. I hiked all 3 last year and had a blast! These 3 trails go through 3 National Forests as well, and are surprisingly wild! If you like being out in nature, these are great states! Just don’t hike during the summer, it ain’t pleasant. The Katy is a fun rail trail, I’ve done it a few times. Hope to get out on the Flint Hills Trail in Kansas next year and ride it. :)

As a Michigander, I think the best way to split it is to compare the whole state of Michigan against Ohio, and then also compare the Upper Peninsula to Wisconsin, which could go into the discussions that used to happen regarding the Upper Peninsula seceding to either join Wisconsin or become an Independent state.
Honestly there's a lot to cover about the U.P. that rarely gets talked about in conventional U.S. history--like how the city of Calumet was at one point being considered a metropolis of the west due to heavy investment by Boston, or how the mining boom was the first of it's kind in the continental U.S., before being eclipsed by the gold rush out west.
If you've any interest in talking more about this in more than happy to--I grew up in the lower peninsula and got a minor degree in history at Michigan Tech in Houghton, so I spent a lot of time covering the states history.

As someone from Arkansas, I would note that the flag was off. I t was the first thing I noticed. Another thing I noticed was that Arkansas's other mountain range, the Ouchita (Wash-ataw) Mountains, were left out. Arkansa's highest mountain of Mount Magazine is actually in the Ouachita Mountains and not the Ozarks. The Arkansas River Valley separates the Ozarks and the Ouchitas.
Another tidbit: As an Arkansan I frequently get hit with the "you marry your cousins" stereotype. Not only is this inaccurate since cousin marriage in Arkansas is illegal, but Arkansas was the first state in the south to outlaw cousin marriage in 1874. Arkansas was one of the first 10 states in the US to outlaw the practice. Missouri took another decade to ban it. The state most people think of when they thin of "southern state that allows you to marry your cousin" is Alabama, NOT Arkansas. Don't get us confused please.

NWA is seeing such explosive growth, and is projected to hit around 1M people by 2050. One group fueling the growth is Missourians, particularly from SW Missouri, moving to our area. My dad has worked up in Joplin for the past 5 years, and they all fondly talk about our area. I’m glad Arkansas and Missouri finally got on the same page with I-49 and got the 20 mile gap completed, it’ll increase integration between NWA & Joplin’s metro areas.
When it comes to the southern midwestern divide, I see the Ozarks as a transitional area. Everything north of them is clearly midwestern, and everything south is clearly southern. Historically the Ozarks were quite isolated and had their own culture. In modern times that is fading as both areas are no longer isolated due to modern communication technology and roads, and standardized state curriculum in schools means slowly the cultures there are becoming more uniform with the rest of their respective states. One area that’s resisted this trend is Missouri’s bootheel and the surrounding area that’s Mississippi River delta, which is culturally southern. Once you go north of Cape Girardeau or west of Poplar Bluff you again start to running into that transitional zone.

"Missouri was a border state and sent many men to the armies on both sides. Nearly 110,000 men fought for the Union, while about 40,000 served the Confederacy. They fought both in Missouri and in other states." You can probably thank the German immigrant population for changing views in Missouri about slavery. Slavery was unknown in Germany, and most German immigrants were vehemently opposed to it. Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis was a Union camp which consisted of the US Calvary. Many Civil War operations were conducted out of this post in St. Louis. You can still go there today to see museums and a large US military national cemetary.

I don't remember learning much about the state while going to school here except for the junior year field trip to the capital and having to memorize all of the bordering states for a test. I was born and raised in Oregon, so the first time I learned about Missouri was learning the Oregon Trail (not the game, but dressing the part, making a cloth doll, singing songs, and making a quilt during the 4th grade, and also going on a field trip to Portland where there's a wagon museum with all sorts of items from that time period)...I don't know how many people around here learned about because it seems like none of my friends from here did in school (which is crazy to me because it was so essential towards forming the West and my home state). For some reason I thought Missouri was part of the south for a long time lol also, it seems slightly weird to me that Mizzou's rival is in a different state (why I think like that I don't know)...considering Oregon has to major universities that rival each other...

  • @deathisonlythebeginning5098

I live in Iowa, 45 miles from the Missouri border. Grew up along I-80, not far from Des Moines (70 miles from MO.). I can tell you northern Missouri really is about the same as Iowa. No southern drawls, landscape similar. You have to get into central or even southern Missouri to think of it as the "south" in any way, shape or form. And he is right, they have some very low taxes! Iowa products are much more expensive. Only one worse in the Midwest is Illinois.

As someone from central Arkansas, I was very excited to see this video, until I remembered I live in Arkansas. Arkansas has it's bonuses, but it is definitely not the place to visit or live unless you plan on settling down and living a simple life. I live in a town that has more cattle than people that is easily 10-1. Hot Springs is nice during the day, and I recommend driving through there to spend a day, but that's about it. Like mentioned, Northwest Arkansas is beautiful, and is probably the "cleanest" place in Arkansas to visit.
