Hi, Anthony great videos. I ordered the K&F Concepts CPL & Fader ND2-ND32 w/ their "Money Back for No Reason Return Policy". I found videos on CZcams describing a problem after purchasing. Once the CPL is correctly oriented you turn pins on the ND filter in a slot preventing it from maxing out with the cross pattern. The problems are turning ND to the max can easily turn the position of CPL. After a while, you don't know the CPL's orientation as it has no stop. Then the return process (in broken Engish) is so complicated that you have to keep it!
I've been using the Singh-Ray 10-stop variable ND filter, and I do notice the cross-hatch pattern when shooting at focal lengths wider than 24mm on a full-frame camera. As long as you're mindful of this, the cross-hatch is never a problem. I also tend to take two shots in these types of scenes...one 'fast' and one 'long', then blend in a few rivulets of water from the 'fast' picture to indicate a bit of 'energy' to the water as opposed to all that foam. That looks like a pretty good filter, by the way.
I would really like to see ND classes both for landscape photography and portraiture. I appreciate the care you take in your tutorials making sure you give us the latest and best explanations with your subjects.
Thanks for your response. I do recall that ND filters can be used in portraits as it can affect the tonal quality of the subject and the background with the use of a high-speed flash. It does take a bit of finesse and practice and I hope that Anthony can offer his usual informative tutorial on ND filters for different uses.
Thanks Anthony. I learnt something about long exposures today - that you can use aperture priority and the camera will set the ss for you even with the nd filter. I usually do it in manual and have an app to calculate what ss I should use.

More information on how to use them is appreciated. You may want to do video on how to use a variable ND filter. In closing its nice to have a face with the voice we have been listening to for years.
Would LOVE to see portrait shoot with this ND filter. ESP to see how you keep the sky from being blown out and the subject properly exposed. Also the steps taken to achieve those images. Thanks for all of your videos. I’ve learned so much from them.
One advantage to a variable ND filter where intensity can be adjusted as opposed to a solid 5 stop ND filter is that focusing is less problematic. You can install the variable filter, set it at 1 stop, adjust the focus then, rotate the ring down to darken in to 5 stops and take a nice focused image. Often with solid filters you must first focus the lens then install the solid filter. Installing that type of filter means taking special care not to move the lens out of focus. Though solid filter are higher quality then are variable filters sometimes they are just not worth the extra hassle.

Anthony, as usual, well done. The one parameter on which you did not comment was whether or not the variable ND filter negatively impacted the sharpness or resolution of the image. In my experience, a number of inexpensive filters have degraded the images. Can you give us an update with that information as well? Thank you, again.

My question is related with using an ND filter and how do I know how many stops my filter has. Its most probably something easy to find but I have had the filter for a while but I am not sure about the stops. Pro Master Filter, 77mm Variable ND Code 9566 Standard. Hi Anthony, great video and very useful as I'm considering one of these variable filters. One thing you didn't mention was if there is any noticeable X effect? I couldn't see any but then viewing on a Mac probably isn't ideal. I'd love to hear what you think about the version they do that has a variable polariser included? Some of the reviews say that there is a noticeable X effect at wider focal lengths? Any thoughts?

Thanks. So did you experience any cross shaped anomalies? Do they use hard stops to prevent continuous circular adjustment? Var NDs I have and used before don't have limit stops, so can be continually rotated, inducing the darkening.
I used a test image for comparison of your K&F ND Variable filter being on the lens and off the lens. First test was without your filter to make sure I was getting a sharp image also tried it with multiple lenses to make sure I did not have a problem with getting a sharp image with any of the lenses. All the images with the Two lenses I used were perfectly sharp without your filter. I then use your filter on the lenses using the same settings and got terrible results. The image was completely unusable blurry after installing the filter. Also the color shift was not acceptable. The lenses I used were of high quality Canon L glass series lenses.

Anita Dash using ND filters for portraits is not common. If the shutter speed gets too slow the person will be blurry ;-)

ND filters will really benefit your video. Try it!
