  • Before you get the wrong idea, I LOVE K&F Concept filters, in fact, I am going to recommend their normal Variable ND Filters and their VND caps. They are FANTASTIC, but these magnetic ones.... just not worth the time or money.
    NOW - Since I made this video, I have been able to find a new Magnetic VND system that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE and take with me on all my shoots - Check out the video review here - • BEST Variable ND Filte...

    I'm looking for filters for my new camera and I watched more than 20 reviews for these magnetic filters - they were literally BRAGGING this system is so good, fast and whatever.
    I'm simply shocked by the amount of people on youtube willing to lie to their audience for a 100 dolar product.

      Thank you for the watch and the comment, and playing advocate to your comment, I know in a non-run'and'gun scenario these K&F might be great, it just wasn't right for the project I was working on and I needed them for. On a good note, I found a magnetic VND that I REALLY LOVE and have been using for the better part of a year now with no issues - Here is my review of that - czcams.com/video/JofIFJhmNhg/video.html - It's a bit pricier, but so far I have seen mostly positives. I always put the magnetic filter either inside the lens hood, or in front of a Revoring step-up ring, or inside the mattebox. That way I don't need to worry about bumping the filter from behind.

    • @NightOwlsMedia
      @NightOwlsMedia  Před rokem +1

      My only concern with this is how do you quickly remove it and throw on another one while you're walking or running? For example the shoot I was on this summer, I never sat down or put my camera down for 8 hours a day. It was super strenuous and basically everything I needed I had to carry on me and attach as I was walking. Is there a way to remove everything switch it around and keep moving without putting the camera down?

    • @frankfeng2701
      @frankfeng2701 Před rokem +1

      @@NightOwlsMedia It worked for me filming a wedding that requires switching for indoor to outdoor. Mine is never as loose as yours, even when rigorously shaken facing down.
      External magnetic ND is never 100% secure. Even the screw-on ones are under the risk of loosening over time. I guess the best run-and-gun solution for you is to get a camera with internal ND.

      Seems that you expected the Non-magnetic filter to screw onto the magnetic ring when the whole point of the ring is to make the setup magnetic. I feel the use case is to switch between other magnetic filters or quickly remove the filter not switch between a magnetic and screw on filter.

    I think therein lies the difference with the expediency with fast fast fast environment of videographers versus still photographers perhaps makes the K&F Magnetic perhaps not for them. I love My K&F set up and the various CPL and ND filters I have and the magnetic strength of their system very satisfying and strong, but then again I am not grabbing and running with my equipment. I had the same exact experience about a year ago too. Returned it too. Still love my other 2 K&F Concept VNDs. Still scouring for an instant ND ON/OFF solution that makes sense for going in and out of dark-to-bright scenes quickly. Apparently a few years ago there was a Kickstarter flip filter holder idea that looks sweet, but the company went out of business. Now there's only a few knock-offs of it around still on Amazon or ebay (I ordered a couple to try), but the original Kickstarter, and Ulanzi's version of it closed with magnets, and I don't think these knock-off ones do. Agree K&F magnets are too weak. Just bought a Maven filter set - much better magnets and fast swapping/stacking. They don't do VNDs since they feel, as I do, that you get a colour cast and with a wider lens can also have an uneven colour shift (angle of sun dependent) with VNDs. That said, I agree there is real RnG flexibility so occasionally a trade off can be OK, so I still plan on using my PolarPro VND (4 stop range 2-5 and 6-9) but will transition into fast swap fixed NDs. Currently Maven only have 3, 6 and 10 stop ND. So using currently can require a small aperture adjustment to retain good exposure if following 180 degree rule. But a 2 and 4 stop are coming soon to Maven, so one will get anything from 2-10 stops with either 1 or 2 filters stacked. Change is very fast and no 'X' patterns, no discernible colour shift (or worse variable colour shift).
    When time is on my side and I'm after best quality, I can rig a matte box and use one or two cinema style fixed NDs. I have both the SmallRig Pro (good quasi hood with side and top flaps) and a Tilta Mirage (will use a VND 1-9 stops) but extremes aren't ideal in VND mode for ultra wides - hence my election for fix 4x5.65 filters (main downside is slowish and expensive).

      So long story short, I did not try another version of it, or another copy of it as when I recorded this I was in the middle of a 3-month production and I didn't really have time to mess around too much so sadly I couldn't get a magnetic VND for that project.
      On a good note, after that project cooled down, I had time to look around a little bit and I found another magnetic VND that ended up working really really well. I did another video about it on my channel and I'm super happy with it.
      Yeah, it did bum me out that this piece would just fall off pretty easily, and if I was an actual gear review site, I would have stressed tested it under different circumstances but literally, I got the piece, I tested it for about 15 minutes in different situations as I had a shoot the next morning hoping to use it, and decided it was problematic so I made this video very fast. The new video with the new magnetic VND is a little more in depth. Hope it helps

    Just a thought here, in my opinion it’s not the lens filter that sucks, it’s just the fact that it doesn’t fit your use case.

      Exactly, and I did make sure to say that. Because I am a run and gun shooter, it sucks for me, I did mention that the K&F concepts are my go-to normal screw on filters, it's just that in my situation these suck

      Also, at 05:27 he was rubbing the filter off with his finger. Just go to 05:27, you can see him do it, then pretend it fell off by itself. I think it's good to call out products that don't work well. But lying about something (even pretending and getting caught doing it once) makes your whole point (and arguably person) untrustworthy. Because you're willing to lie and pretend to make a point you want to make even if it's not true or not that bad.

      @@headsethero5449 I completely understand where you're coming from with this. And I can see what you mean - however I kept my finger there to feel when it fell off. My wife made the same comment. I wanted to make sure I felt when it fell off to know when it did. However, I totally see your frustration.

      Oh! I haven't heard of these! I will look into them. I don't mind paying a little more if they work well.

      So this is what I found - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1734383-REG/kase_1111061002_moviemate_magnetic_mattebox_v_nd.html/qa
      Or these bad boys - scroll to bottom - www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=kase%20magnetic&sts=ma
      They haven't been released yet as of today, looks like March 2023

      Sorry I didn't reply til just now - I ended up buying a Kase on your suggestion and it's been pretty damn good. I did a video about it here - czcams.com/video/JofIFJhmNhg/video.html
      After-thoughts - Using in the field is great if nothing rubs up against the filter. I have a spider belt that I hang my handheld camera from and it will immediately fall off if it touches the belt pad / pants / etc. But if it's in my hands and I am whipping around, that Kase Wolverine is a beast.

    4:01 in, couldn’t you set up at a location in your house that isn’t affected by sunlight? 🤦🏼‍♂️

      For sure, I hated that too. Like I mentioned in the video I was packing for a shoot and only had about 15 minutes to shoot this so I figured the information was more important. Hope it helped

      @@NightOwlsMedia I'm not sure it helped me. I'm not a run and gun content creator. But I can certainly see where the weak magnet on that filter would not work for you, on the other hand, it'd work fine for me. Peace * Love * Music * Photography
