  • Pulsed plasma rocket (PPR): It will be possible to travel to Mars in just two months.
We all know that one of the objectives pursued by NASA is to send both astronauts and useful materials to Mars, the red planet. Although a possible space civilization in the future depends on this, there is still a long way to go in the construction of advanced and specific technologies in order to complete these missions in a way, above all, efficiently and safely.
Due to the great distances involved in space travel, the ship must reach certain speeds so that the travel time on the mission is reasonable. That said, the first step to getting to Mars is to create a propulsion system that produces high thrust with high momentum and is capable of quickly transporting massive payloads to and from the red planet. For this, a technology called pulsed plasma rocket (PPR) is being developed.
It is known that the company Howe Industries is currently developing a propulsion system that can generate up to 100,000 N of thrust with a specific impulse of 5,000 seconds. This pulsed plasma rocket is based on the concept of pulsed fission fusion, but is smaller, simpler and more affordable, making it a clear candidate for future deep space missions.
This concept harnesses the power of nuclear energy to generate thrust for spacecraft propulsion and employs a fictional nuclear power system that derives energy from the controlled splitting of atomic nuclei. As mentioned in a NASA press release, the exceptional performance of the PPR, which combines high Isp and high thrust, has the potential to revolutionize space exploration. The high efficiency of the system allows manned missions to Mars to be completed in just two months.
Phase 1 of this technology was focused on evaluating the neutronics of the system, designing the spacecraft, the energy system and the necessary subsystems, in addition to analyzing the capabilities of the magnetic nozzle, determining the trajectories and the benefits of the PPR. Phase 2 will depend on these evaluations and their results and will determine the final PPR concept.
So we will be waiting for this Pulsed Plasma Rocket. If you have any news about this, let me know here in the comments box.
