Vandran's Privateers (Critical Role Sea Shanty)

- This is a parody of the Canadian folk song "Barrett's Privateers" by Stan Rogers. I thought how easy it would be to change up the lyrics and make it fit Fjord's backstory, so that's what I did.
Lyrics:
Oh, the year was 835
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
We’d set a course through the open sea
On the finest vessel I've ever seen
Gods damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for Exandrian gold
We'd fire no guns - shed no tears
I'm a broken man on Damali’s pier
The last of Vandran’s Privateers
(Repeat after every verse)
Oh, Vandran came and cried the town
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
For twenty brave men all sailors who
Would make for him the Tide’s Breath crew
The Tide’s Breath sloop was a wondrous sight,
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
No list to the port or starboard, she
Was finer than any the Lucidian’s seen
On a bright sunny day we put to sea,
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
We were 5 whole days to the Diver’s Grave
Pumping like madmen all the way
On that fateful day we sailed again
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
When I heard a sound from below the deck
So I dropped my work and went down to check
The man called Sabian stood below
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
He held a match to a fuse which led
To a pile of old black powder kegs
I tried to run and abandon ship
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
But a flash of red and I’m breathing brine
Think this is it for this life of mine
I awake on the sand, no ship in sight
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
With a sword in hand, try not to cry
For my sunken brothers’ and sisters’ lives
So here I lay in my 33rd year
(How I wish I was in Alfield now!)
It's been some days since we sailed away
And I just made port town yesterday - Hudba
As a proud Canadian, Maritimer, and Critter, you have no idea the amount of joy that this brings to my heart! Thank you!
Seconded! Proud Nova Scotian here - I live about 45 minutes from Halifax! An amazing city with some great history! Kudos on this parody Chase! :D
Bidet from Halifax. Very well done! I'm amazed.
Halifax born, New Brunswick raised.
Hi from New Brunswick! I saw the title on this and thought, "this can't be a Barrett's Privateers cover... can it?" what a perfect combination and so well done.
I’m a Cape Breton boy but it appeared in my recommended and it made my heart happy
"A flash of red and I was breathing brine" BARSSSSSSS
Orly using those bard skills to sing a sea shanty would be a delight, and this is the new theme of the crew in my mind at least
I am immensely happy that this is a real shanty, it annoys me to no end when people think sea shanty means "any vaguely pirate themed music"
Actually, this is not based off a shanty. Shanties were working songs on (sailing) vessels. Barrett's Privateers was written by Stan Rogers in 1976 along the lines of traditional sea shanties. But the Stan Rogers certainly did the old shanties credit and his song is great to work to. As a critter myself this cover is amazing and I'm probably going to start singing this version instead of the original.
Starting to wish I was also in Alfield now...
"Arise and be merry
And sing out while you can
The world will never see the likes
Of dear old Stan"
Two foundations of my heart colliding. Bless you for this crossover.
A Dreadnoughts nod! Huzzah from Vancouver!
@@michaelsheppard8939 Huzzah from Dominican Republic! A nod to you for knowing the reference :)
We need a Fjord ark in which the crew composes this song for him after a night of drinking and talking
Gods damn them all. I was in the US Navy for near 10 years and this brought back a lot of memories. Thanks.
Respect, brother.
i had to check the lyrics bc i was sitting here like - im a broken man under molly's WHAT?
This is the most attracted to a man I've ever been
Fjord or Chase 😉
@@lizbogonia it's gotta be Chase. He's performing it sooo
Omg I was waiting for this with bated breath and I missed it cause I was listening to Orange’s low-fi 🤦♀️
Not a bad thing to miss it for!
both of them are SO GOOD
youtube's auto-gen captions turned "On Damali's Pier" to "Under Molly's Pier" and that gives me Feelings
I can’t believe this still moved me to tears here in the end of 2023. It’s been a few years since campaign 2 ended and this still hit me in the feels
Chase, this is sheer delight. My cheeks hurt from grinning.
This is one of my new favorite Crit Role songs!!
I'm so tempted to memorize this and belt it out to the waves the next time I'm crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
Smashing job! Id love to hear a version with some traditional celtic percussion, maybe a fiddle to get that seaport tavern vibe
I hope you will do a song for Molly from yashsa point of view of the time she spent with him in the circus. Keep up the great work I really enjoy everything you've done. You are a bright light in a cold place with everything going on in the world. Just wanted you to know how much joy you have put out in the web 😄
That would be so good and heartbreaking. I love it
OH MY GODS. This was brilliant! I'm honestly nearly crying (Shed no teeears~🎵). The words are dancing with the melody beautifully! Me and my sister couldn't help but try to sing along the second half. And you bring in Fjord's backstory so amazingly as well, I'm loving both the song and the character more for it. I want to hear critters chant this at conventions now! Brilliant and incredible job, my man! ❤
"Shed no tears"?! I'm freakin' SOBBING!!! This has to be Fjord's official theme song now!!!
Chase! Thank you for continuing to produce music during the pandemic. While I'm sure your creativity is helping you cope, I just want to reassure you that it is helping us as well!
The first notes just immediately sent me back to my childhood. My dad and grandpas on both sides would have their whisky and start playing stan rogers songs, and I'd lurk and listen. This is amazing, thank you so much for sharing!!
As a sailor i approve of this message
I FRIGGIN LOVE IT, it's so good and catchy Great work man.
Great work this shantie is amazing. The original was a them them song for my crew in atlas this shantie dose it justice
As soon as I saw the title, I hoped that it was a cover of "Barret's Privateers". I love original, so thank you for this! Absolutely awesome work, man!
GODDAMNIT. DEEP CUT. EVERY LINE. GODS DAMN YOU.
THANK YOU thank you thank you for this.......
I love the rang you have been trying out man. Keep up the amazing work and I hope to hear just how vast your range is
I love Barrett's Privateers. I love Critical Role.
This is fuckin' perfect.
As a Critter, and a massive fan of sea shanties in general, I love this so much! I have Stan Rogers version of “Barrett’s Privateers” on iTunes, so I had to listen to this, and man was I not disappointed! Keep up the good work!
Bruh yet again you made a BOP
I knew it wouldn't make any sense for this to be the case but because Molly is on my mind, due to recent events, I kept hearing Molly every time he said Damali and I had to check the lyrics haha. Even once I knew it was Damali...it still sounded like Molly.
Amazing! Now do a Critical Role version of the Northwest Passage haha
Ah, for just one time, I would cross the snows to Aeor, to find the hand of Molly reaching for the astral sea...
Well done. Delight to hear and being a fan of both CR and the original song you created a perfect match. Thanks Chase!
This is a damn good variation of Barrett's Privateers. Very impressive.
Keep continuing the great work!
Absolutely love this, such a different vibe from your other stuff but just as great and absolutely as enjoyable, if not more, to listen to. Top stuff man!
Just came across this today. Well done sir! My brain kept expecting the "Now I'm a" from the version I grew up with, but I assume the one you're used to didn't have that. Regardless, nice rewrite and well sung.
Correct, I grew up with the Irish Descendants version rather than the Stan Rogers original one. Glad you enjoyed it!
Bro I’ve seen a lot of your early work on CZcams but when I clicked to the page to sub I was like “yo it’s this dude!” Bro please keep up the good work, I love this and thought their needed to be some sea shanties for CR I want to see Travis and the rest of the the cast perform this lol
I love sea shanties! So much
I love your voice! The harmonies are perfect and the background sound of the waves are so peaceful! 🎶🌊
I love this! I love sea shanties and was so happy to hear this master piece. Thanks for another great piece of music.
10 seconds in and it’s exactly what I was hoping for.
This made me smile so wide it’s insane, thank you for this song!

An amazing Sea Shanty. Once again, well done.
Superb work!
Wow! This is great!

I am once again asking you to put this on spotify. I need it for reasons
This is so beautiful Chase! The lyrics are perfect.
This has become my preshow Thursday hype routine love it
You never fail to amaze me! Hope Travis get's to hear this !
I have no words. So good, sir.
This is so awesome I started screaming!
Hell yeah, sea shanties.
I've listened to this so much i know it word for word its so catchy and such a beautiful song not to mention the amazing vocals.

This made me feel things
Fantastic re-imagining of this shanty, and very well done. I've had this in my head for actual days now. Do you plan to add to your spotify?
God I LOVE this!!!
This is awesome for so many reasons
- it is a sea shanty
- it is CR-inspired
- it is a filk
you are a genius, thank you for existing and sharing.
I love this...one of my favorite Stan Rogers songs meets Critical Role and it's great.
Based on "Barrett's Privateers" by the genius Stan Rogers.
I think the subtle crashing waves makes the song better? Am i the only one who fould it relaxing?
I don't know how I didn't instantly make the connection to Barrett's Privateers just seeing the title but as soon as I heard the first line I knew
Great idea. Will definitely come back for the next video. When is it coming out? Thumbs up 👍
This wins the internet oh my god 😂😂
This song slaps
This is great, I love it, is it also on the spotify, so that I can add it to my playlist?
Certified SLAP
This sounds a lot like the Real Mckenzies cover
I haven't heard of that one. I based it off the Irish Descendants' version since it's the one I grew up with
I can see the RMK similaries between choruses, mostly it hits my ears closer to Stand Rodgers melodic baritone
This is good. You should do the original too.
Beautifully crafted shanty. It sounds like it came from an old folk song book. Will there be sheet music for this? I woukd love to buy it if so.
this is actually a parody of a song called Barrett's Privateers by Stan Rogers
Has somebody thrown this at Travis Willingham?
Thank you for the mental image of us just physically chucking fan art and music at the cast like plushies
2 dislikes are from Sabian and Avantika.
Please, someone share the lyrics!!!
Lyrics are included in the description!
Thanks a lot, I haven't checked 😅 amazing adaptation by the way.
the cognitive dissonance aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
