    Thanks Mr. Auger! I just started watching your cyber briefs last week too. I'm a 53 yr old just starting a new adventure in cyber from real estate most of my life. Working on my sec+ now. What is the tone for employers looking to hire people in thier 50's? Love this community, so giving compare to other industries i've been part of.

    • @ericsilberman1416
      @ericsilberman1416 Před rokem +11

      it is illegal for a company to ask you what your age is during an interview, so definitely don't volunteer that information.

    • @phabeondominguez5971
      @phabeondominguez5971 Před rokem

      AGEISM exits everywhere, including CyberSecurity.. but CyberSecurity is raging hot right now and there is a dearth of people in the field so you have that going for you. Since you come from real estate, your customer service skills should exceed those of your peers so that's in your favor. If going the self taught role, lack of experience is against you, so that's why regardless of age, you need to sell them on your love of tech and people. So in addition to your Security+ build a home lab, this will not only give you hands on experience, but also talking points in the interview as well as demonstratin ur love of tech. Look into PFSense and set it up at home, best of luck with all of it. And remember, I was over age 40, no tech degree, zero certs, unemployed for 2yrs(stay at home dad) heard CyberSecurity was hot, studied for 2 months and got my Security+. The rest was history, got a cake of a job making real nice $$$ now. Honestly tho, and confirmed by my hiring manager, what got me the gig was my gift of gab and how I showed how much Ioved technology thru out the interview. And best believe I'm not anything close to being a tech Nerd, but CyberSecurity always intrigued me.

      There is a ton of free information out there. If you want to save some time and pay a fair price, ITPro is pretty awesome. Thats why I'm affiliated with them. go.itpro.tv/simplycyber is the link and code SIMPLYCYBER30 gets you 30% 1st month/year. The content there is pretty deep and wide, and practice exams and labs and stuff.
      Again take adv of all the free stuff, but if you're short on time or its a valuable asset the ITPro is a reasonbly priced option to save you time.

    • @mr.marvin2672
      @mr.marvin2672 Před rokem

      It's a numbers game. You may need 500 applications. The more you apply, the greater the odds and offers you'll get. MSPs are awesome, if they have an InfoSec dept you can pivot to. Do you have Sec+? That's a good cert to start with.

    • @ericsilberman1416
      @ericsilberman1416 Před rokem

      There's this horrible situation (2023) where experienced "journey-practitioners" are highly prized, but 3 million job positions are open, and we definitely observe that it is very hard today for entry-level people to land their first job. The real challenge/difficulty today is "how to get that first cyber job" without "five years of previous experience in IT operations". A new mindset is just starting to emerge that believes, "we can hire people who have drive and passion and a hunger to learn and to perform, and we can teach the new necessary skills to those ambitious and motivated people" but from my position I don't see many companies actually offering on-the-job training. So right now there is a Catch-22 situation that "companies will pay $$$ for experienced cyber people" but many people want to start their FIRST job and they don't have official paid experience, but apparently very few companies want to invest the time effort and $ expense into providing that necessary training.

      this cert (Sec+) is one of many potential boosts. that is one path but there are dozens of other viable paths that have worked for many people. Dept of Defense loves Sec+ certification but tons of other cyber jobs don't require Sec+. (and there have been thousands of cases where Sec+ provided no boost at all and Sec+ holders did not receive the job offer). it is not the case that "holding Security+ certification guarantees you a job," that concept is not true in any way.

Is it just coding and being in meetings all day? Idk if I'm interested in what cyber security really is or if I'm just interested in an idea in my head. I try to watch day in the life videos and most of it is wasted time of showing them getting ready for work and then they have to edit out their actual work. Another thing is that I don't want to but a medium to large financial commitment and have this not be for me. Right now it's just a fantasy in my head.
