If This Guitar Comes to the USA, There Could Be TROUBLE! | HEX W300 Review + Demo
HEX reached out to me to ask if I could make an honest review of their product to help attract a USA dealer to stock their products. If this would really retail at $400 USD, I think they could have some success - the neck specs are incredible at that price!

What do you think about it for ~$400? I think it brings a lot to the table with the neck specs if you want a SS Fret / Compound Radius Guitar

For the price, the Hex does appear to have good overall specs. But so does Harley Benton, and they have a lot more options, and will now ship directly to the US. I’m no HB fanboy, but I did try one of their Fusion series guitars, and I was quite impressed.
The Hex doesn’t do much for me aesthetically, but it’s not hideous. The light weight will be great for a lot of people.
What I dislike is the lack of an apparent serial number, not any indication of the actual factory in which the guitar is manufactured.
Regarding the discrepancy in relative pickup output, I always advise to spend a decent amount of time adjusting pickup heights and pole pieces before swapping pickups. Often, a LOT can be accomplished with a simple screwdriver and a bit of patience.
8:34 not impressed by those tooling marks on the edge of the fretboard. For a second I wondered whether the fretboard was cracked at the 1st fret. Not shabby overall, it’s competing with higher-end Harley Benton models like the Fusion III.
Sounds ok, for the money. I'd prefer it if they had a few natural wood grain finishes, black/grey just looks cheap to me.
For that price? Just the hardware/electronic components alone purchased separately would likely cost as much or more.
Pickups would have to go
I feel like....Batman would like this guitar
From my experience so far, Indonesian guitars are a notch above Chinese mid range stuff and impeccably built. Good on Hex!
From my experience it goes:
China/Vietnam
India
Indonesia
Korea
Japan (Some ESPs are nicer than American though)
USA
Eastman and Shijie prove that generalisations don't work.
We choose to import models made to a fixed budget from many countries, and leap to the conclusion that's as good as they can do. All of those countries will have the same diverse range of domestic brands from mass produced cheap shit up to mid range and all the way up to low volume master crafted artisans producing custom shop quality. Don't judge their range of brands solely by the subset we choose to import.
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar I don't think you can beat Japanese with american until a certain pricepoint, and even then it's gonna be though to beat the f&f and attention to detail of Japanese made instruments.
My Indonesian RG for $299.00 blows away my Japanese RG Prestige for $1,499.00. Proving that that price, and country of origin mean squat.
@@PaulCooksStuff china might have good guitars, but if I can avoid supporting CCP and whatever scummy stuff happens, I will.
In Indonesia, HEX is pretty much a well-known brand for acoustics and their quality are really good, beyond its price range. Electric version is also new to us in Indonesia and the price is less than 400. If any of you go for a vacation to Indonesia..you can try so many other brands less than 400.
I live in Korea and these things are available super cheap here. I can get a T-style flame top for like $300
Music stores in Korea are absolutely great for cheaper guitar brands you don't find anywhere else.
@Mottmatt my expertises aren't great. I went to a store that only took customers by appointment. I went to another store they didn't that didn't like people demoing guitars. And I went to a store recently that had a single electric guitar, the rest were acoustic and pianos.
would love to know more about getting one of these puppies (HEX W300) via your route or another. Thanks much for responding.
Look forward to hearing from you. Russ Hunter
@@TheRussmo oh you see these everywhere in Korea. I sadly never got to play one.
80% of the guitar and basses are made at the Cort factory in Indonesia. Even PRS and Ibanez.
Yeah. PRS would sell you a story that they have their own dedicated manufacturing space and employees doing things "the PRS way" but in the end, it's the same manufacturer doing so much and knocking it out of the park regardless of what's on the headstock.
I have an Ibanez EX series made in Korea and it's not great and I have an Ibanez RG made in Japan and it's excellent. Japanese and American seem to be best.
@@TVsBen except that story is true. PRS SE's are made in a dedicated Cortek factory.
There’s a little bit more to the PRS story. Paul could have left the back of the head stock blank, but he chose to have the headstock state that it was made in Indonesia. He wanted the Indonesian guitar makers to have pride in their work. The back of the head stock didn’t have to say anything, but Paul wanted the workers to be proud of their work.
@@TroyShahanMusic actually it’s because all that goofy writing on the back of the headstock makes it a pain in the ass to conceal that it’s a SE, making selling them to people who know no better a harder endeavor. Despite what Paul says
Interesting guitar with good specs. Some design suggestions: The forearm carve should to be shifted forward by about 3 inches towards the waist, as in its current position and shape, the pointy end is likely to get in the way when the picking hand reaches over the fingerboard for techniques like tapping, etc. The headstock looks a bit blocky, but would look more elegant if the treble side was angled inward towards the high e-string tuner by about .5-1.0 inch.
Excellent pickups. You get all the strat sounds and all the les paul sounds within a simple lay out. Impressive.
I have stopped worrying about pick up and pedals. It’s the speaker that makes the sounds. Any guitar can be made to sound good with the correct signal to the speakers.
Absolutely correct. couldnt agree with you more
Uh... the pickups and pedals are both the beginning and the meat of that signal you're talking about.
Someone’s been watching Glenn I see lol. I agree about the pickups but pedals can drastically change the sound. But if it’s just a guitar, cable, and amp, I want a good speaker.
It's just not true.
If you can't tell the difference between cheap pickups and premium pickups, then by all means buy the cheap ones. You'll be just as happy and you'll wind up with more money in your pocket. But there is a difference. Hint - it's not just about the sound, it's also about the feel and how much nuance you can command with your technique. More advanced players will favor the premium pups every time.
Lower that bridge pup down a couple turns!
Very impressed! I really appreciate not only the features, but the fact that it has some uniqueness and isn’t another copy/variation of the same guitar types we see over and over again.
I am not a shredder by any means but I really liked this guitar. I think I would be tempted to polish it up immediately because I really like the metallic flakes that showed up in the paint when it was polished.
I hope they find a way to bring these to 'Merica. At $400 this strikes me as a solid value.
I have to agree, the metallic finish came to life with a bit of shine on it!
Never say things are a bargain, manufacturers collate feedback and react to it. If lots of people say its a bargain they raise prices. If you can easily afford it then good on you. Don't make things less affordable to people not as financially fortunate as you.
Trogly constantly saying things are cheap at $2.5k especially angers me because he has a vested interest in prices going up. Not to mention that I hear he is a trust fund baby too so money comes to him easier than ordinary employed people
What sort of polish should you use without taking paint off ??
By no means I can call myself an expert on guitars.
But being from old school, I always go by saying "you get what you pay for".
Yes, it looks nice.
If I look at this and the hand made custom made Ibanez I bought last year, it's a night and day.
I think that the first time this guitar saw a human touch was when the guy opened it and picked it up.
It might be nice as a practice guitar or for someone who struggles for money but wants to play.
I'm not trying to dismiss it because it could very well surprise me, but like I said, I simply do not trust anything that is way too inexpensive.
@@truthtorpedo99 not to mention that assumably he makes his money by buying guitars at reasonable prices and then reselling them at a markup with absolutely no value added.
‼️ THE HEADSTOCK ‼️ The good thing is is that they left enough wood up there to carve out the Stratocaster design Headstock 🧐
The middle position sounds great. I like the split tones too.
At first look, I wasn't too keen on the body shape as I'm a traditionalist when it comes to that. But by the end, it won me over, as did the headstock. As for the sounds, that's a definite yes on clean, dirt and split. Overall, I'd say Hex has built a very nice, versatile guitar with specs some manufacturers normally put onto more expensive guitars. I wish them the best of luck. A really well-done review and playing demo.
Yeah I feel like this wasn't really the best colour out of the ones available.
Would probably be a good look for a Nu Metal band, but the other finishes give the guitar more of a Yamaha BB bass vibe and I really like it.
I kinda like the headstock.I'd pay a little more for some trim on the whole thing. And it sounds really good.Would be a great first guitar for someone.
What's the name of the song at 14:20 that Trogly plays ? He's played it before in demos and I can never find it.
I always enjoy hearing you say the words "button" and "metal". You emphasize the "t" sound, which is unusual but cool. As always, great review. Love your channel.
"Strap Buh-in"
It’s that Ohio accent. He always says things like “needs restringed” instead of “needs to be restringed”.
It's not an Ohio thing, it just depends on how you were taught or learned it etc
Actually it's a phonetic error
Nine-tee
Would they send you a guitar with upgrades? Seems like a really good guitar for that.price point?
What the Hex, try it.
Lol
I like the cutaways and thin sleek design, stainless steel frets are awesome too.
Hey Trog! I have a couple of dozen vintage guitars and handful of plain Jane types. like one Firefox, which I changed out the electronics of that to Gibson 335 stuff. When I compared that to my 74 335, blindfolded, for tone and playability, you nearly could not tell the difference, except for around $4500 in value! LOL... Ok, this HEX W300 for $400..! Man, I just may purchase one to mess with, ream it out, put another pickup in it so it has three! and grind off some paint to see what it's really made of! I kind of liked the tonality of it. Not too shabby, as I play all kinds of music and do a lot of electronic fingerstyle picking, Like PF, Led Zep, Tommy E. Jazz and old Rock and Roll. So, maybe I grab one and I'll send you some photos of the process. Nice video there champ... Dug it.
Let us know if you figure out how to buy it. I was on their website and couldn't find a purchase option.
Apart from the ghastly headstocks, they make a few decent looking guitars. The one they sent you looks like something Schecter made and discontinued in 2006 due to low sales.
Headstocks don’t look the best but at least they get straight string pull!
@@martyshwaartz971 I don’t hate the one on the guitar that they sent him. But the pictures of the other models, some of them made me wince.
@@TylerJohnstonGuitar Looks like they were going for that James Tyler headstock look
@@serpentsbane9166 The headstocks on James Tyler’s should be illegal. At least with these guitars you’re not spending 5K for said ugly headstock lol.
Key question how much does it really cost he said IF YOU COULD GET IT FOR $400
What polish did you use Trogly? Looked great!
Was there any tuning stability issues? Not a fan of the head stock or bridge. However It’s cheap enough to do some mods and make it a metal machine. I'd put a Lace Alumitone Deathbucker in the bridge and a sustainer in the neck. Maybe one of those Hipshot baby grand bridges would look cool on this.
I hope there will be a saw included so you can shape the headstock 🤭
Where can I buy one of these?
I purchased a bone white W300 S/MIV from Hex. They emailed me a video of a test run, testing the switch and pots and running some riffs up and chords up and down the neck, before packing and shipping it. It arrived yesterday, just 6 days after purchase. I can't put it down. Set up and ready to play right out of the box. Quite nice action. Very playable neck. And the two octave fretboard is nice to have. I love the slenderness of the body and how comfortable it is to wear. And the angry pickups suite me just fine! I'm certain this guitar will bring me many hours of joy.
How's the pick up sound is it good for metal?
@@humangaming2024 I would describe the pickups as sharp and angry, but I'm no guitar tech, I'm barely even a guitarist! There are some videos here on the Tube of people playing the guitar that might help answer your question. Just search "W300".
i would totally buy that, it has all the specs i want, SS frets, HH, HT, rosewood or ebony fretboard. spoke wheel adjustment 1v1t out of the way so my hand dont hit it. only adjustment i would have them make is the fret ends, use a more obtuse angle more toward 90 degrees maybe like 80 degrees so you have more area for the string to go i hate when the string pops off the end of the fretboard. another thing i would change is the compound fret radius, i like a 14" all the way down.
I don't mind the headstock, definitely better than the first version you started out showing us. It seems like it'd be a fun guitar to have. I like the flat finish for sure. I might change the nut, maybe, but I'd be fine with as is based on your demo.
Love the lightweight, stainless frets, locking tuners. Like the design, comfort carves, inlay and flat finish. A bit too long of a neck for me and not being a shredder the pickups sound too hot for me but assuredly others would like em
Hey Austin, check out Baum Guitars (and Basses) from Denmark, really interesting stuff, and they’re introducing a cheaper (but still around $1000-$1200) made in Korea line, though that’s only doing 2 models right now.
Darrel Braun did a good review the other day.
I wonder if this is what happened to Laguna.
They moved to California and don't do electrics anymore I think.
I had a Laguna, I forget the model, it was an HSH pickup arangement and their version of a Floyd Rose setup. I bought it when they first came around after a bit of research, and it was exactly like this guitar: very well made with thoughtful features for the price. It had the split switch for the pickups and that "Is this a Baritone?" Neck length, which I liked, cus I noodle around the 12th fret a lot.
Of course, it got stolen.
But they were originally an import-only Indonesian company making really good affordable guitars too.
That bridge p-up was made for distortion. That sounds fantastic distorted
Can you order Hex guitars online? Is there a US distributor? Thanks
They take orders via email - info in the description, or you can just buy my demo unit on my website. www.troglysguitarshow.com
What I noticed was the neck is "flat sawn" number 2 Maple, (kind of soft) and that the frets aren't glued into place. I have no issue with the soft wood body for this price range, but the pickups sound pretty awful as well.
Aren't there several cheap guitars here with SS frets, in this price range already?
I see no feature that stands out, as something that I can't already buy, and $400. is a bit high for a cheap project instrument with no tremolo.
doesnt seem these are on the website anymore if they are the W series they dont have anything listed there.
Just ordered 1 Austin.... even had a video demo of the guitar emailed before shipping ... gave 10% off and great customer service £270 bargain .... thanks for the video 👍
I'm a bit surprised by the coil-split options; only one push-pull knob for two split-able pickups?
as for stainless frets, i play the biggest contour Warmoth necks on my 63 and 64 jaguar and 65 mustang. A neck from warmoth maple neck, rosewood board and stainless steel frets upcharge comes to right around 200 bucks. Unfinished
Hello from France ! I have a request : will you make a review on the news Revstars ( Element and Standard ) ? Thanks for your job on YT !!
Are the fingerboard edges rolled? you have totally missed to point that out cause it does seem that way.
That headstock ain’t that bad. I build guitars and designing headstock’s is by far the hardest bit. Bodies have to be a certain shape to fit with your body, to get good neck access etc but headstocks can be any shape as long as the tuners fit. Trouble is, if you stray too far from the norm, they just look wrong 🤷🏻♂️
I recently bought a Greg Benett torino tr1. I know it's a cheaper guitar, but I was wondering if you could provide any info on them. Info seems to be pretty scarce. I set mine up, and it plays great. I know you cover nicer brands but maybe it would be interesting. I can't find much on them besides reviews. It would be nice to know more. Your content is great by the way. I'd really appreciate it.
It looked as if the arm cutaway ended sharply right where your arm and wrist sit. Especially if you strap-hang it with the neck tilted up steeply. That is a great looking cutaway but form should follow function, it may need to extend further around the body so you can pick halfway up the neck or near the bridge with free access. Although if that nice Mr Trogly said the bridge height adjust screws poked him, his wrist and arm may have floated well above the cutaway. Especially with the deep rear body cut, the arm cutaway might be for appearance only in practice. What about it Mr T did the arm cut bother you? Although you were picking above the bridge pickup pretty exclusively in most of the footage.
At this price would be a great contender to upgrade the pickups, possibly some humbucker sized P90! Push pull could be used to give a choice of 2 tone caps!
Love it. Biggest myth with electric guitars? The damn pickups.
They just don’t matter. The speakers you hear the sound from decide the tone.
I have to correct you. Pickups matter if its not tooo much gain and the pickup sort is also different. For example p90, sc or humbucker.
@@iggrut yeah. I left that out. In my opinion, Humbuckers sound very similar. My P90’s sound damn near exact, and my strats all sound the same. But not one of my few dozen guitars play the same. So I have my favorites for that. I
@@gustavvader2207 I often describe it as a nice table. The food can be the same but it is a much better experience on a nicely made table than a plank. You also have lots more inspiration :)
EQ pedal can do a lot. Adjust pup height and amp/speaker obviously.
A neck shim should give enough wiggle room to adjust the saddles with good action and lowering the height of the saddle screws
Im not usually a fan of modern looking guitars, but this is good, I like that they have done something different without going over the top, I quite like this headstock and also the inlays, all in all I like the Hex W300, Im going to their website to see if they do a higher spec model
For anyone wanting something with different aesthetics, this is cool. I have a Cort/Manson MB which is very similar to this.
Do they make a bass?
Neck adjustment screws are an easy fix.
The 8mm on my Ibanez were gouging into my palm, spent $3 and swapped them out for some 6mm.
Stainless being a value added thing to me is so funny knowing that you can get like 3 guitars worth for $15 shipped. Yes there's labor, but still. Everything should be stainless.
You should check out Sully Guitars out of Texas if you wanna see some unique twists on body shapes
The overall profile is Ernie Ball Silhouette. Lots of character & tone at that price point.
The chamfered edge for the arm comfort cut reminds me of what Ben Crowe has done on multiple Crimson Custom guitars.
Hi Austin, I looked this guitar up on the web and it was like and they were cheaper than $400 but there's shipping and all. At that price I'm going to order one providing I can get one sent from Korea to the U.S.
How much does does the guitar cost?
I love the new renaissance we are seeing in the guitar industry- where companies like harley benton or kramer, even the squiers' at $400- they are are making good sounding instruments more easily available to the public. It is funny how hard it is to get some of the cheap gear actually from a distributor in the states. But I LOVED my HB tele and am looking forward to getting the HB jazzmaster next.
Sounds better with a bit of gain. Would need to modify the headstock.
I gotta say it's pretty impressive for what it is. As a Les Paul fan, I could actually see having one of these in my stable. It's actually not that bad at all. I'd buy one for 400 for the hell of it.
Same here. I think it's pretty nice, headstock and all.
@@cataclysmicconverter it really is a nice lookin and sounding guitar. Usually I buy epiphone Les Paul's and change pickups out and tuners and other stuff to make it my own. But I don't think I'd change anything about this one honestly
Hell yeah!
@@JustinSmithPYRO I agree with you there
@@shawndouglass2939 seriously. It's not that bad of a guitar. I was pretty impressed by the sound of the pickups. I was expecting a lot more different sounding on the bad side. But for what it is. It sounds pretty good in my opinion
Those pickups remind me of the Wilkinson WOHHB ceramic classics. Great sounding humbuckers tbh. They go for the Seymour Duncan sound and get close enough that for $30ish-$50ish a set it is MORE than worth it. Especially if you play heavier.
I think the bridge is Wilkinson as well.
Can you review Hex N400?
I love the neck pickup on that.
strap placement button. the horn is a terrible place for the strapholder. it forces the fretboard to angle up at your face, decreasing the stretch of your hand and increasing carpal tunnel injuries. the best spot for the button is where the headstock meets the body. i do this to all my guitars. it makes the fingerboard stand perpendicular to the ground, which makes it easier to do wide stretches without injuring your wrist. allan holdsworth does this to all of his strat shaped guitars, look at any picture of him playing one...
385,000 Korean Won is $289.40 in USD.
Dat solder job... My lord I need to get better
sounds very Squier strat light ... probably a bit brighter
I want one of those T style. Really like that shape.
Btw, in the vid it definitely looks satin. Actyal flat would leave oil marks every time you handled it. (From a contractor that begs customers to never use flat paint.) The shielding paint was actually flat.
The headstock reminds me of a James Tyler guitar.
I like the headstock.
HEX W300 looks and sounds good. 24 frets and coil splits are useful, love the truss wheel. See how the price and dealer availability goes before getting excited about these models.
I think that bridge is either too hot or the neck is too mild/vintage. It's a weird metal and vintage mix of pickups. Kind of neat in that regard.
However, I will say, I usually don't like coil split humbuckers (except some PRS models, like the ones with 75% split) but I do like the coil split on this.
THe T style hex guitars are really nice! ( after being worked on) My fave is the satin pastel purple one
Gibson should use those bridges cause that two-piece bridge on the left-hand of Guitar, which I have six of is hard to keep intoneded on the D string
A page from fender on the headstock
Graduating post tuners would be an advantage
Can you plz do review on "hex E300*!!
I definitely like the neck I usually prefer maple caps.
But the neck has a lot going for it .
Nice guitar....... the headstock reminds me of some of the old Peavey guitars.
the small dots on the fret board should be hex to match the decor
I wish you would address fret ends and fret levels similar to how Phillip McKnight. Everything else is very thorough!
For the price, this thing is nice. Looks great. I'll have to trust what you say regarding feel and sound. I wish they would have made every fret inlay marker a single hexagon instead of the traditional dot, then put the triple or something more exaggerated on the 12th.
I liked the tone.
I'm not sure if anyone noticed @5:56 when he shows the guitar faced towards the camera after describing the knobs. It looks like it was intentionally designed to make a smiley face...
They missed a trick not having tiny hexagons for dot inlays like the 3rd but smaller
Stainless steel fret wire from Stewmac cost only $10-$15 for two two feet long pieces. So their $400 stainless steel frets are a complete lie.
It's the cutting, installing, polishing, and leveling that makes SS frets more expensive as it is a harder material, and harder to work with. The fret wire itself is nominal in price. The wear and tear on your tools isn't
$400 is the price of the whole guitar - not the frets
Yes!!!!!!!
Looks like they have a better QC than gibson.
Headstock looks better when color matched. Neat.

@@TylerJohnstonGuitar I gotta try that on my new 20k Greenie! Thank you for the tip!
i also liked the quirkier ugly square headstock better, it reminds me of some of the funky 60s guitars
Harlry benton is better than this when you get to the 350 range... the Amarok baritone has proper Active emgs which boosts the cost, proper 5piece neck through, stainless steel frets, locking tuners, ebony board, flame top.
And their stainless steel les pauls etc i think are like 250...pickups are Roswell but very good quallty and at that price you can switch to aftermarket vanson alnico 2 set for like £40 if you want a more traditional burst bucker sound.....
Id love to see you try one and mod the pickup and see how it compares

To HEX: If you keep a steady quality control, you have a winner there! Cool and thougtthru design, that manages to distinguish a unique HEX trademark look in a very competitive pricerange! Well done, best wishes for the future! 🤟👍
It’s a great looking guitar. The sounds are more towards the hard rock/metal crowd but with the look i doubt you would find it in the hands of someone playing blues or jazz anyways, maybe pop music. It could benefit from having a Floyd rose term system but i think that would raise the price a bit and they’re trying to stay competitive. All in all a solid guitar for the price and with 24 frets (two octaves) as an owner of a Brian May red special, i cannot begin to tell you how much better those extra frets are.
I live in South Korea, these guitars are priced really competitively. My buddy just bought one of theirs tele styles.
