  • In our brick and mortar music store we see parents come in on a regular basis with guitars that they purchased online, often from Amazon for their child. The idea is that the kid may not stick with it so they don't want to spend too much money. This is an understandable sentiment but when you look at budget options on many e-commerce sites like Amazon they come from brands you have never heard of. Is it even possible to manufacture, ship and sell a guitar that is a good isntrument. Is there any value in a $40.00 acoustic guitar that you purchase from Amazon? Tons of shoppers think that's the case, so we wanted to see what the deal was for ourselves. For those of you that are on the fence about purchasing your first guitar, well this one's for you. We went to Amazon, look at the top selling guitars, picked the color we liked and ordered. The guitar came shipped to us in a box that was thankfully, not damaged in shipping and we unbox and review for you live to be completely honest and transparent and the guitar and what you can expect.

I learned in a $20 guitar.... it was impossible doing an F chord on it. (Simply because no sound would come out of it when pressing all the strings) a lot of people told me to just put it in the trash because it was "useless". But my parents did not have money to get me anything better... so i tried incredibly hard and never gave up despite the fact it was so hard to play it, my hands would hurt a lot when playing it for long periods of time and didn't really make much progress in months..
Now 13 years later I have my own studio, I play classical guitar, electric guitar, drums, bass and piano and still have that 20 dls guitar sitting in my studio as a reminder that its not about the instrument, its about YOU and your willingness to get as far as your imagination will allow you to, just keep grinding.... you can do it.

I also started my journey on what most would call rubbish, mine was nailed together with 3" oval nails with no glue at the heel (neck joint) as it had previously came away on the previous owner. It went out of tune every 10 minutes so I learned how to tune it real quickly by ear.
I learned to play all a beginner could want to learn on that guitar.
My parents also did not have much money at that time. It was a time for making do with what we had or could obtain while still putting food on the table.
Some folk will have learned on scrappers, some folk won't even learn on the best.

I'm a piano guy but when I was at high school, my best friend was a guitar lover, he would talk about them literally All THE TIME. And his enthusiasm made me want to learn the instrument, so I bought one, of course, I was just a random teanager with no further knowledge about guitar so I took the first "cheap" (already a pain in the but to get here in my country mostly for teanager) one that I saw (around 60 $ if my conversion is correct), so I started looking at online courses, after 3 months of playing or so, I was getting nowhere so I just thought I suck at it. Not so long after that, there was a party in my school and we brought all of our guitar, and I found out absolutely no one could play my guitar!!! Seeing that, I took another chance and bought another guitar but this time, my friends helped me choosing a good one... and here I am now years later, still with this guitar, and can now say officially that I do really suck at playing this instrument.... 😑

      1. Stick to one song, I recommend something easy with only tabs, no chords for now.
      2. You can play something like Happy birthday or a famous tv show song me was (gravity falls) it really helped a lot.
      3. When you mess up don’t keep on going restart over until you got it
      4. Stretch your fingers
      5. Relax and get comfortable
      6. And if you can play most easy songs try playing Ode to Jay, that’s the best beginner song that can really help you improve trust me.

Some $20 guitars are actually playable. But then again some aren’t. Usually the classical guitars with steel strings are the ones that give you a tough time. Overall if you’re looking for a guitar its best to buy one from Guitar Center. Every instrument at Guitar Center will be playable.

I got a 500 pesos guitar which is about 25 dollars over here. It was ok it was an average guitar but had a very thick neck (playing bar chords was a real struggle!!!) and it had cheap wood. It still looked pretty nice and worked enough to learn the basics. I later upgraded (if you can call it that) to a used $60 TOKAI GAKKI FRANCISCAN Model No.51 guitar (its Japanese or something). It's way better than my first guitar but since it's pretty old tuning is a struggle, and it has some scratches in the back and front. It also has a crack that's been "fixed" in the bottom. Also when you use a capo the strings sound off, they sound to pressed on idk how to explain it. But overall it still manages to please me (in other words I can't afford a better one).

    • @markmurphy4866
      @markmurphy4866 Před 4 lety +2

Steven - have to disagree on the Guitar Center comment. They move so much volume that they tend not to setup any instrument other than the upper tier guitars. I’ve picked up multiple instruments that had severe playability or electronics issues. I actually favor pretty high action (I play upright and electric bass), but I’m talking about unrealistic setups.
Classical guitars by definition always have nylon strings, never steel. I suppose you could find gut strings somewhere.
As someone who worked in a few guitar stores, I’d also say that a new $100 steel string is often more playable than a used instrument- even at a similar price point. Used instruments are a mixed bag. Some great buys to be found, for sure, but unless you know what to look for, it’s buyer beware (used or new).
Many folks quit as a result of a hard to play instrument, one that won’t stay in tune or simply sounds bad. It’s interesting that the guitar in this video plays reasonably in tune and sounds surprisingly good for the price. But, as the reviewer states, it is very hard to play.

My first guitar was a pawn shop find that was horrible. I was ready to just give up and decide I couldn't learn to play. Another friend made me a deal on a Baby Martin and I've been moving forward ever since. Thanks for sharing an interesting video.

I had a guitar like that. I bought it at around 10/11 years old for £8 and 7 years later I decided to actually take it seriously and learn it.
The guitar always got out of tune and I always thought that it was my lack of skills. The nylon strings were killing my fingers. I could barely play longer than 10mins because it hurt so bad.
Today I sold it (I’m sorry to the person lmao but they looked at it and said they want it so I mean whatever - everyone has a different budget).
And today I also ordered my dream guitar. It cost £144. As an 18 year old that was pretty much all my savings and I’m so excited. I know it’s definitely not the best but it’s what I could afford and I’m so excited about it. I genuinely look at it like my dream guitar so wish me luck for when the delivery comes through ;)

Also many times it saved me when we needed some music to go with some singing at church, yes its a terrible guitar, but was still the best $30 I ever spent! So for what it is, with nylon strings, its amazing.

I have this exact same guitar for 2 years now as my first guitar.ik people think its trash but i learned on it and it never broke. I changed the strings and thats the only “repair”i did to it.some people don’t have enough money to buy fenders or yamahas but if you hear a sound its good.I love my guitar and now that i have a electric i understand how important that guitar was for me to be able to finally go on and get my electric. This guitar is awesome if you can take care of it.

What exactly did you mean by that? Did it mean that you only need 4 years to finish learning guitar or what?

@@carcass8736 No? Obviously he meant that he upgraded to another guitar.

I absolutely love that the gig bag says "guitar". Not enough instrument cases tell you what is inside!

In general I agree with Chris's conclusions....get a decent guitar to learn on. That being said if you know what to look for you can find a new acoustic starter for less then $100. My 11 year old great-niece decided that she wanted to try guitar so I went on line to see what I could get. I found a J. Reynolds 36" steel string on the Amazon Warehouse page for $45 with free shipping so I researched it. First thing I look for; does it have a truss rod? Yes. Does it have a paddle headstock? Yes. Enclosed tuners? Yes. Standard bridge with pins? Yes. I decided to give it a shot.
When I got it I pulled it out of the box and was pleasantly surprised. The construction is well done and it has X bracing. It has what looks like rosewood board with inlaid position markers and rosewood bridge. The tuners seemed pretty decent...smooth and fairly accurate. The strings were junk but I was planning on changing them anyhow. I put a set of light silk & steels on it and using the truss rod I was able to get the action low without any buzzing. like most of this sort of guitar the nut slots were cut too high and since I didn't want to invest in a set of nut files I used the trick of tuning down a half step and putting a capo on the first fret(still no buzzing) to ease playability and further reduce string tension. I also had to dress the ends of the frets a bit. It sounds good for what it is...a small all laminate guitar. My great-niece is having fun and she will start taking lessons with it this Fall.

I did the exact mistake when learning guitar. I quit real fast. That horror is still rotting in my basement.

Great video. We already own one but needed to confirm that it's firewood before burning it. Thanks!
