The Dirty Knobs’ frontman Mike Campbell’s unique approach to songwriting and versatile playing style helped shape the sound of seminal artists including the likes of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac, and Don Henley. You can bet with a career as illustrious and long as he’s had that he has the guitars to match.
In this episode of “The Collection” host, Mark Agnesi heads to “Knobville” in Los Angeles to talk shop with Mike and see where all the magic happens. The two go deep into Mike’s arsenal, including several Gibson classics like the 1960s Gibson SG Jr that he picked up at a video store and used on Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream.”

When Mike talks he sounds so much like Tom Petty. He definitely doesn’t get brought up enough when talking about the greats.
They both def have that same way of speaking. Probably because he spent so much time with Tom that he rubbed off on him
you got that my brother, cause he stood in his shadows for so long
but he never explain's how it really happens...??????
But you can bet it pissed him off.....
He looks and sounds like Tom Petty wearing a disguise
@@pseudobeast4653 LOL he does.
It is so true....like Tom Petty even physically same shape.
Joe Bonamassa: “I bought this guitar on October 12th, 2004 at exactly 8:19PM. It was sold to me by a single mother who had found it in the passenger seat of her father’s 1981 Silverado.”
Mike Campbell: “Oh, what is that, a Firebird? Do I own that?”
(Not dissing Mike, I love him! If I owned that many guitars I wouldn’t be able to keep track of them either!)
haha for real
😂😂😂 That is so true
Mike: I didn't care what year it was it just felt and sounded amazing. Amen.
Love how Mike isn't caught up in the super detail specs of his guitars, he just like them because they look good and they sound good. Legend
How a guitarist should be
Y E A H, H E D I D N' T E V E N k n o w w h a t a s t i n g e r w a s
Definitely. He doesn't try to pretend like he kbows everything about his guitars. It's so refreshing to see a collector who seems to kbow just as much as an average guitar player and who just collects guitars because they move him in one way or another. It's just different when he picms up a guitar and the first story that he tells isn't how rare it is or what's so special about it but what his wife thought about it.
I'm a spec nerd. I think it's interesting, but the best guitar I've ever owned is my white Firebird - the one I gave the fewest shits about spec when I bought it.
Just, because he doesnt spit out exact specs about everything does not mean he isn't "caught up in the...detail". It just means he didn't talk about it in this interview. The whole estimating the year thing could be done on purpose when he knows exactly what year they are but doesn't want to come off as pretentious.
That guitar lift just blew my mind. Talk about life goals. I no longer care about putting my kids through college, I just want that.
ha ha! It is awesome.
What 4 you a millionaurs artisre tha t s money lots and now they cost too much all the collecters other countris bought em etc here shipped out never to b seen again.
Always loved the "The Collection" series. Please continue making them
Thanks for watching, more episodes are coming!!!!
@@gibsonguitar paul mccartneyyyyyyyy he might have a big collection
Yes! Moarrrr! I can’t even think of who I’d like to see. I’ll leave it to you guys, as it’s probably just as satisfying for me to be exposed/re-exposed to players that aren’t usually on my playlists.
@@gibsonguitar Steve Howe is very famous for loving gibson guitars, he'd be an awesome guest! Hard to get though I suppose...
@@gibsonguitar awesome again, thanks. But what about SLASH?
Mike never gets mentioned with the guitar greats, maybe because he's always been so understated or doesn't see how many notes he can cram into each bar. He definitely belongs. If you don't understand this man's greatness, you don't understand music.
The funny thing is he’s mentioned in virtually every recording session when it comes to rock/americana guitar. He’s sort of the touch point for that heartland rock tone.
I understand.
Hes a great guitar player and defy anyone who thinks different to copp his solo on american girl
I agree but the cool thing about these type of players and many studio musicians are that they don’t really care for the fame/prefer to stay behind the scenes, and get paid big bank. I know people who truly know and get music/instruments know people like Mike.
Agreed!
Mike Campbell is one the greatest guitar players the world has ever known. I could listen to him talk for hours.
definitely
Well, that's easy, considering the speed in which he talks. Thank god YT has the possibility to speed up the playing, I always play vids with Campbell at 1,5 speed.
Totally! I put him up there with all the other great guitarists that don’t get their due like Don Felder. Can you imagine an album with the two of them?! Dibs on Ld vocals!
Totally! I put him up there with all the other great guitarists that don’t get their due like Don Felder. Can you imagine an album with the two of them?! Dibs on Ld vocals!
I love how Gibson doesn’t act like they’re the only guitar company and they acknowledge other companies and appreciate them as a part of the history of music. Love the direction Gibson is going under the new ownership.
LOL! You say this while they go and sue a small business owner.
@@DelScully I have stories... And don't get me started on Rickenbacker .
Bullshit. They think the fucking world revolves around their overpriced junk.
it makes it so much better for that. totally agree.
What's the direction?
I love that Mike doesn't know a lot about a lot of the guitars. Bought them because they were cool and played them. Probably never spent five minutes in his life on a guitar forum. Just a player.
That really struck me. As someone who loves guitars I’m amazed that someone who is such a great player can have such fundamentally basic gaps in his knowledge about the guitars he owns and plays.
@@davidburke2132 its because you don't need to know all the specs to play. Some people obsess over specs and stuff, and focus on that more than just playing.
@@jasonw4053 and I never said you do need to know all about your guitars to be a great player (although there are benefits to knowing about your guitars in terms of helping you find your sound, ensuring you don’t get taken for a ride when you’re considering acquiring something, and understanding a bit about why you like what you like and helping you find alternatives, complementary gear, etc.). The point was one of surprise over his lack of knowledge. I’ve watched a number of these “The Collection” pieces, and most of the famous and successful players know a great deal about their guitars… Mike stands out as an exception here. That’s the core point.
@@davidburke2132 yeah, I get it. Mike isn't a guitar nerd, he just plays them, and is so rich that he can just buy whatever looks cool or interesting. He doesn't care about specifics or specs or as you put it, "fundamental basic gaps in knowledge," just rocking out and making great music.
I think it's more like he sees instruments as tools, not as much as precious and delicate collectors objects.
@@jasonw4053 that’s fair, but even when you see instruments as tools there are valid reasons to know about them and their specs.
I love how Mark knows more about the history of these guitars than the artists themselves, you guys really chose the right guy for the job.
well said!
He didn't seem too sure about the white Firebird though. Those are the well-respected early 90s reissues
He’s a used car salesman.
Agreed...I do miss em working for norm tho..
I noticed this, Mark actually let the artist tell his 'version' of the history and the story of the guitar without butting in and doing any major correcting which he could have many times. Mark does a great job in this role. Top stuff!
Campbell is a legend. Hearing the stories and inspiration behind how he came across each guitar, what songs he’s used them for, and why he reaches for each one was a magical trifecta of content. Mark has the coolest job on earth and kills it every time. This has been my favorite episode of the collection series.
wow - props to Gibson for featuring the Fender stuff in their own video. I think that's massively respectful to the player and the music. I love that Gibson was not too proud or insecure in featuring other brands - all those bands are truly the sound of rock music and part of history, very cool that Gibson made sure to honor that. Mike Campbell is one of the finest melodic guitar players I've ever heard - loved his parts since I was a little kid.
People would be all over Gibson if they did that - Campbell is known for playing many other brands than Gibson. Don’t give them too much credit for doing the things they should be.
These kinds of comments rub me raw after enough of the heaping praise happens. Fer cryin' out loud, when you do a show that's called "so and so's GUITAR collection" you dern well better include ALL of their guitars. This isn't Mike Campbell's GIBSON guitar collection!
Such a great episode. Funny how Mr. Campbell is mostly speaking about the look of the guitars and Mr. Agnesi filling in the facts. Awesome collection, awesome guitarist. What a treat. Thanks GibsonTV for these collection-series. Greetings from Finland!
Mike seems like a genuinely nice guy.... Great stories and wasn't trying to dazzle us with shredding techniques
Mark, This was one of the best interviews ever. The stories with each guitar are priceless. Mike has got to be one of the coolest down to earth guys of all time. And you are the best as well. Thank you so much for these great interviews. Stay safe and well and keep Rocking. Signed John Gregory Zepbass from Munster Indiana.
He even sounds like Tom , not to mention The Traveling Wilburys ... Mark always nails these gatherings !
Gotta admit Gibson has really got it together since 2019, was one of those on the fence wondering if it was more talk and changes would be useless boardroom and accountant changes. Nope!!! Now it seems to be run by those who really do Love the Guitar. Have purchased three Gibson's since (after swearing would never do it again) and quality has certainly improved.... A LOT!! It's the big package though, like The Collection, New interesting (old) products coming out, going back to their roots, Gibson Garage, Mod Shop, Etc.., Great Job Gibson... Please keep it up!!
Mark you have a very cool job and do it well. Love the passion, every time seeing an AMAZING GUITAR look like a 8 yr old on Christmas morning. Understand the Gibson Garage was your Baby, job well done! Cheers.
Nice video, great guitar collection. I've always been impressed with how your videos don't shy away from showing non Gibson guitars. Gibson is making some great guitars, and people can see it.
The gold in these episodes lies in the stories....guitars are guitars...but a guitar w a big story is much more...becomes a legend
Agreed
Yes. Yes. Yes. This is my favorite series Gibson TV makes
What a decent guy and total legend! Thank you 😊👏
I could watch a whole season of his guitar stories. Thanks for doing this Gibson.
Mark your making such a great impact with Gibson…. Really love the company’s direction the last 4-5 years
Angnisi is certainly making an impact on Gibson. He single handedly turned off most of the world that might have bought Gibson guitar’s....
This needed to happen. The guitar world thanks Mike and Mark
If I could play like anyone, it would be Mike Campbell. Thanks for decades of playing to support the song, Mike. You're one-of-a-kind.
Mike is actually cooler than I thought. I always loved Tom petty heartbreakers since I was young. The music just makes you feel great. I'm from a small town in England and was born 1979 and will always listen to there music always. Rock'n'roll is life. Rest in peace Tom and thanks Mike for the great music. Fantastic
This is by far the best episode of "The Collection". Keep up the good work Gibson.
God, I love Mike. Such an unpretentious guy, and a solid musician. Stingers? Staples? Uncovered P90s? Doesn’t matter, it all about the songs inside - waiting to be discovered. I had the pleasure of seeing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers live a few years ago, and managed to catch Mike’s signature sweatband as he threw it into the crowd after the last encore. I wear it whenever I play his licks on my Les Paul, hoping some of his mojo rubs off on me. Thanks for sharing, Gibson. Great episode
amen
you read my mind, i love the guy, such an awesome person
Go see The Dirty Knobs!
Exactly…ZERO ego…plays to serve the song…doesn’t make a bunch of goofy ass faces, just plays crushing, tasteful licks
You lucky sonofagun!!
What a nice guy man! Awesome guitarist and collection! Live long and prosper 🖖👍😎
I love it when Mark knows A LOT more about the guitars themselves than the owners. I’d love that. Learning new stuff about things I’ve had for years.
Agnessi is a fine interviewer… he lets the interviewee talk, then asks the right question, like, “When do you reach for your J200?”
Thanks
This is genuinely my favorite thing on CZcams! But PLEASE, plug them guitars in - just 2-3 chords at least.
Lotta fun watching Mike discover his own guitar collection
Mike Campbell is an absolute legend and has helped pioneer some of the most timeless guitar playing of the 20th century and beyond... he has a fabulous collection too. Thanks for sharing!

at 1:11 The video shows "GRETCHEN"--NOT!
Please do this for all related videos if you haven’t already! 👍🏻
Mike bringing down the glasses to look you in the eyes at the end was great!
This is one of the best if not The best collection episodes.
So good to listen to Mike talk guitar.
The man is so easy to listen to no bull.
You can tell he loves guitars. So good.
Mike is a no b.s. kinda guy.
Best episode I've seen so far. Love the stories and love Mike Campbell.
I could hang for a whole day with Mike and enjoy every minute of talking guitars and playing music 🎼 with him. What a cool guy. And ya I get it about the "legends or stars" etc... At the end of the day they are just people who love the same thing we all do. Music. I've recorded with lots of great people. Some famous, some not famous but definitely should be because they are just as great. In the meantime I'm doing the same going to pawn shops and garage sales hoping to find that one 59 Les Paul that's still out there 😜😎👍💯
How Cool, so down to Earth, I think Mike and Tom were closer than brothers
I see Mike but am reminded of Tom. What a gem of a player.
Brothers
I am grateful that he will never leave Tom behind like the Stones did Brian. He knows he can be his own guy and still honor his best friend. Mike must be the nicest guy in Rock N Roll.
Both of their albums are good heart and soul rock and roll baby! He’s interesting to listen to. Really cool, thx!
A guitarist’s guitarist. Thanks, Gibson!!
Wow. He sounds like Tom Petty when he talks.
That's the way we talk in the sticks of Florida.
Dam he does. Lol
It’s not just his accent it’s his actual voice
I have always thought so.
When you are with someone so long you start to pick up the same tones and accents.
Could watch this stuff for hours - music AND history!
This is one of the best episodes yet, up there with Brian Ray! Mike Campbell is a cool and humble dude, some of those deals on those guitars, fantastic!
I would love the opportunity to spend one afternoon in his studio. How inspiring would it be to have access to all those beautiful guitars that are so rich with history? That's gotta be what heaven looks like!
Ha Ha Ha hes a trip with the guitar carousel very cool idea and so many nice guitars and always wanted to see a interview with Mike such a great player
Absolutely killer! Thanks for letting us in to hang out for a bit!
THE guitar clinic. Excellent!!! Mike Campbell is such a cool guy. Interview very well done. Thank you.
I took my 14yo son to see the Knobs in Ventura a few weeks ago. Mike's not kidding when he says they're having fun-It was an awesome show!! And yeah, that white guitar...it's a looker on stage. Definitely caused quite a stir when they all pulled out white guitars! Bonus: Stan Lynch was on drums and for the last encore, he and Mike stood side by side and sang Listen to the Stories We Could Tell. Unforgettable night❤
Love you, Mike, you’re the greatest…
This is the best collection video so far. I’m so glad Mike was willing to share his guitars and stories. I wish it was longer!
Great job Mark!! Mike is such an awesome dude!
Simply only the best Guitar Verturosose like Mr. Campbell really know how to bring the best of these classic master pieces. Long Live the Heartbreakers 🎸
Mark "on the record" jaw drop, what a cool series. This is what guitars and making noise is all about, the stories. I love the Gibson brand! all the best Mark A.
Sleazy Agnis destroyed the interview...🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮
Michael is one of my favorite players , he complimented Tom so well , I love every song they did together !!!
I'm a big Mike Campbell fan. It's not widely known how much of an influence Mike has/had on the music scene. I am sooo glad he is there!
I just want to echo the sentiment in these comments. Mike is very humble and cool and is one of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock. He defines what it means to be a collaborator in a band and the fact that Tom Petty wanted his input and guitar playing on all of his music says it all. They made each other better and were and are so special.
so true. And, I feel super duper lucky to have lived when they did.
Mr. Campbell is getting great recognition but is STILL under rated…..Kudos to Gibson TV for not only showing the Gibson’s but the Fenders, Gretchen, etc…..Very well done….I’m going through my collection, this weekend, because of this….
Cool show. Humble & likable fella. He deserves loads more credit than he gets. I dig the fact that he's more into the sound & look than the value, collectability, & prestige of the instruments he owns.
Mike Campbell I think your very cool for doing this video because many people love your music and love your guitars! Great show!
Million dollars worth of guitars in the first 30minutes and he could care less. They just look cool and sound cool to him. Mike is that dude and you gotta love that about him
Very very cool video. Thx. Don't think I've clicked on one of these previously ... but it was Mike Campbell. Watched all the way through and enjoyed every minute. Thx again.
I love how equal attention is given to other brands. Really awesome stuff! So a great resource for guitar history is all types
I don't even play guitar but I can watch and listen to Mike anytime. This is music history right before our eyes.
You can tell how good of friends Tom Petty & him were cause good friends start to sound like each other with sayings & way of talking. What a cool suprise this was! Mike probably can't tell either. Great episode!
Well, that was just excellent all the way through.
I love that Gibson allows musicians to show all their guitars, not just Gibson.
Nice! Now I’ve got something to watch tonight. Mike is the man.
Nice to see a guy like Mike get some love. I often cite Malcolm Young as my favorite, but I’d sell a leg to be able to play the way Mike does. And his collection is almost note for note my lifelong wishlist. Great episode, more like this👍
Its nice to hear Mike talk about Nathan at Duesenberg guitars.
Wow, Mike is my number one influence. I was ten when Damn the Torpedoes came out. Being a Punk Rock bass player, I had to get a guitar to pursue that rabbit hole which Mike had opened. I bought a used Marauder for 100$. As I grew musically and the vogue axes were Kramer, BC Riches, and Ibez’s. God gifted me with a 71 lp custom I picked up in the Recycler for 240$. 1982 I believe. It’s the gem of my collection as I own at least one of each of the greats. Mike continues to inspire and his love of guitars is infectious and inspiring still, 45 years later. Thank you Mike and Gibson, you have enriched my life beyond explanation.
Love that you were every bit as interested in the other guitar brands as we are to hear their back stories, thanks Mark.
Mike is so overlooked its criminal...I lump him into the guitarists' guitarists group...the same group as Keith Scott...great stuff Mike!!
Good comparison. Mike and Keith are both great musicians - They serve the song and tailor their tone to that rather than merely adapting. Specific to Mike, he is so good at that you can hear a great song, love the guitar parts, and only find out years later that it was all him. Which may be why he gets overlooked.
@@kevinjohnbetts I'm sure of it...cheers.
Mike Campbell embodies cool. It oozes from him in every way imaginable. He's one of those heroes that you actually want to meet. One of my favorite episodes of "Collection".
Most underappreciated guitarist ever!!! I'm so blessed to see him and Tom petty in 2008 August at the gorge in George WA
I'll know what to watch tonight..Thank you! My favorite Series!❤️❤️
The 2 Dirty Knobs albums are INCREDIBLE
This was a treat.
Thank you.
I think this is my favourite one so far. This isn't a collection of investments. This is a personal collection of historical music making tools.
This dude rules... he just has the most gnarly collection u can tell he's just put together thru the years and its like each model has the perfect amount of wear and are from such epic times each of them... what a perfect musicians classic set of grade A choices... im a one of each model kinda guy myself and the best part of a collection like this is the versatility and creative freedom... i mean the homie just pulls out a vintage tele B bender lol.. j
Yes!!! Another great "collection" episode! Thanks, you guys! This is by far the greatest guitar channel on CZcams!!!
Thanks for watching!!!
Thank You so much, I enjoyed every minute !!
Holy cow, it's no wonder Mike and Tom had such great chemistry together. They could be brothers. If you told me this was Tom speaking I would have believed it.
38:50 “songs have guitars in them” I know what he meant but it was still funny to hear him say that
I really enjoyed this Mike is such a good guy, I like how he doesn't know everything about his guitar s just why he likes them. He sure knows how to play them!!
Mike sounds like a very honest person
A great guitarist with a unique sound. I always know his guitar licks when I hear them. I was lucky enough to see Mike with Tom Petty at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens New York in August 2017. It was an awesome show.
Wow... This is definitly the best episode. What a great guitarplayer Mike Campbell is, and what a collection...
What a fantastic and fascinating episode, Mike has so many brilliant guitars and the stories to go with them !!, the new Dirty Knobs album is incredible, such a fun watch 😄
The best interview - love love love Mike
I don't play guitar but enjoy listening to these guys. Mike Campbell has a lifetime of collecting guitars. What a guy, what a life.
Thank you thank you thank you! I was hoping to see Mike’s collection.
This one was particularly interesting and great!! Thanks mark thanks Gibson!!
I love Mike. Thanks for this.
Best one yet!
Best one yet. Mike is a class act
Unbelievable range of work horses. Good vibrations from this cat.
I like the way Mike explains how each guitar has a song inside it, inspiration comes from strumming a string..that's a soulful explanation
