Stay with the style (if that’s what it is 😅) as you can see from Chris’s over the past 6+ years, it much different from the start of they’re CR journey. Chris has my WhatsApp number. Not something I’d want to publish on a CZcams comment section. 😏

You guys are great - I subscribed. I have a question for you both. You have spent time in Panama and Costa Rica. So far which country could be your home and why?

    • @KNowWhat_KathyandScott
      @KNowWhat_KathyandScott  Před rokem +1

Kathy here. Thanks for the comment, and for subscribing. We really appreciate it!
You've asked a tough question, there are so many awesome things I've appreciated about both countries. Hopefully I can do this comparison some justice. :)
Keep in mind this is an opinion based on having seen relatively very little of both countries, and at this point in the journey we're not thinking of settling any one particular place. We've fallen in love with a few places, but we've not considered calling them a permanent home just yet.
      1. Cost: for slow travel, where we're staying a month or more in most places, accommodation has been considerably less expensive in Panama. Groceries, gas, and restaurants are less in Panama as well.
      2. People: so friendly in both countries. There is such an easy communication style in Costa Rica, even with our broken Spanish. They are so patient with us, extremely helpful and forgiving of our bumbling mistakes. Panamanians are equally as kind, but perhaps feel more reserved. It’s hard to compare, we’ve had really fantastic interactions with pretty much everyone we’ve met. And it’s certainly difficult to sum up a whole country’s people based on having met only a handful.
      3. Scenic beauty: well, I mean, what can I say? The beaches, the palm trees, the volcanic mountains, the jungle. THE SUNSETS!!! It’s all been so gorgeous. While the beaches that we’ve seen in Panama have their own beauty, I personally like the ones we’ve enjoyed in Costa Rica more. A challenge we’ve experienced in Panama is that the beaches seem inaccessible to most, unless you’re staying at the resorts or gated communities. This may not be all over the country, but something we’ve noticed. It’s a shame if that’s the case in general, because they really are beautiful and should be enjoyed!
      4. Amenities: from our very limited experience, it appears the “modern conveniences” are easier to come by in Panama. I must admit, I had a bit of a “kid in a candy store” kind of experience when we happened upon a store in Panama that had many of the things I’d not seen since we left Canada.
      5. Food: I’m vegetarian, and in both countries many of the local restaurants have few options for me. However, apart from Panama City which was amazing for restaurant choices with fantastic menus, I’ve enjoyed the dining experience in Costa Rica much more.
      6. Friends and family: we have made friends, who feel more like family, in Costa Rica. So I suppose, all told, Costa Rica feels more like home.
And I'm always excited about the adventure, so we'll see where it takes us next!

Scott here: Excellent question! First off, I’ve fallen in love with every country we’ve stayed in so far. One thing I like about our slow travel lifestyle is that we get a chance to get past the honeymoon period and reallly get a feel for what it’s like to live in a country. At least I think so! 😊
We’ve spent the most time in Costa Rica over the past couple years so we’ve grown some roots, and made a few friends so that’s a plus for Costa Rica. It does have a homey feel for me. And I really enjoy the environment and animal life. Howler monkeys tend to sound like demons descending from the sky but I miss them when we don’t hear them. They’re fun to watch too!
Ok, focus Scott! We don’t often think in terms of ‘could we make this our home’ because there’s so much of the world we want to see. Our conversations are more about what places we think we would revisit. From that sense Costa Rica and Mexico rank pretty high but we really like Panama too. Panama City has been one of my favourite Central American cities so far, but I find that the coastal villages tend to have a separation between locals and expats and tourists. Lots of very secure gated communities and resorts on the coast. We like to get to know locals and explore real life in Panama and we’ve found that we’ve had the most luck venturing inland.
Costa Rica has some gated communities as well but we’ve found that there’s more of an integrated community vibe there where locals and expats mingle. That’s pretty cool.
We really love the people in all the countries we’ve visited. Once again slow travel has provided us with the opportunity to observe general nuances in the people. We’ve found Mexicans to have a great sense of humour and they seem to like to tease, which is right up my alley. While most Latin Americans are family oriented, we’ve observed that Costa Ricans have a strong sense of family and community. In Canada one of the first questions we tend to ask people is what they do for a living. In Costa Rica they ask about your family. How many kids do we have, where do they live, and so on. Seems like they’ve got their priorities straight. Our experience with Panamanians is that they tend to be a bit more reserved but once we try to break the ice in our typical bumbling way, they warm up. The most frequent question we get from Panamanians is “where are you from?” I chalk that up to Panamá being a major trade route, and I imagine they come across people from all over the world.
So all told, I think I’d have to say that Costa Rica would edge out the other countries just a bit more. Kathy and I have both felt like we’ve come home when we get back to Costa Rica.
Thank you for subscribing to our channel and for the great question! We really enjoy getting to know people who watch our videos.

Please be careful. If you get loss retrace back right away. There is a place (sub); San Jose neighborhood, where the police does not go at night. It is easy to end up there. Stick with a walking tour downtown. Im in my 60s. My favorite aunt used to live there back early 70s. It hurts.
