- A 1st-Person Adventure game where you are in a maze roam area being chased by Tyrannosaurus Rex. Once you are spotted by T.Rex, you chase run as fast as possible to avoid being eaten.
This is the one of the earliest 3D Games to be released on the home systems and on computers, which pave the way for games like Wolfenstein 3D in the early 1990s
Due to hardware limitations during that time, the game itself has no sound.
Emulator: Eight One emulator at: www.aptanet.org/eightyone/.
Recorder and Editor: Virtual Dub
Encoder: Avisynth+Megui.
Note: Re-uploaded since previous video had bad quality and poor gameplay. - Hry

If they remake this, I'm sure it would lose it's charm. The dinosaur here doesn't look like a dinosaur, he looks like a haunting ghost. The lack of music or sound effects is perfect for this type of game. The only thing that really helps you are the texts that tell you about Rex location. It's not really that long. It's perfect.
The only upgrade this game needs is smooth movement.
What if I told you:
That Rex is a demon?
There is a remake from 2002 from some fan of this game

Yeah but it’s not good
@Seamus O'Dork who? Why? And what?
Man, so simple but so good. No music or sounds, just the readout of "Footsteps approaching" or "rex lies in wait" or "rex has seen you" or "RUN he is beside you".
Definitely would make for a good creepypasta material.

That T Rex is scarier than it should be. The bottom text also makes everything super onimous.
Odd how such simple text can create such an ominous atmosphere. A lost art in most modern run n gun horror games.
Samuel Ana Admittedly, there isn't any gunning here, just a lot of running!
Knight of Arkronia Agree! This reminds me a LOT of Dark Deception.
still better than walking sim horror games
Puppet combo games got you covered I guess
Fun fact: this is the first horror game ever
i knew it
Another fun fact it was the worlds first 3D game ever
Native Kyson pretty sure they just used stuff to make it look 3D not actual 3D
Haha funny epic gamer Moment people said I counted as a “3D game”, if you search up first 3D game this pops up.
@@nativekyson9352 well your right but it was not the first 3D simulation type thing, after all this does count as a game.
This was the first computer I ever owned, back in 1982. I wish I could tell you how mind blowing me and my father found these graphics at the time. We'd never seen anything 3D on a computer. We kept dragging my mother in to watch it (she was totally disinterested lol)
Wow.
E
His mom just looked at the monitor and thought of the Empire.
The text "run, he is right behind you" is honestly scarier than some modern day horror games.
this is way more scary than every average horror game nowadays, like just imagine you are lost in a maze and you get a message saying "rex has seen you"
This game is actually scary, considering it was made in the 80s
It looks more like it was made in the 1960s because it has no sound and the graphics look too old.

I know more scarier than realistic sh*ts
It's cuz of the graphics
Those good ol' days when graphics were your least concern when gaming...
@Trex 8210 Sometimes, in games like RDR2, you just gotta stop to look around the scenery.
This really was the peak graphics of early 80s and I assure you graphics were hyped just as bad back then, everyone was gushing over how "realistic Doom was" it wasn't very diffirent back then, you sure you know what you are talking about.
If anything people care less about graphics nowdays than a few years or decades ago, it's not a leading talking point these days.
No doubt, this was cutting edge graphics at the time

As unsettling as this unironically is, the dinosaur looks more like a ghost, and it also looks oddly adorable

Then....It gets closer with its eyes growing white circles...
Then... Its teeth

Your dead, but hey you got points but still..
This game has truly aged like fine wine, feels like an indie developer's passion project
I mean, it was made by one person, so I think this game is truly indie
@@ArjunTheRageGuy Can't really call it "indie" when the concept didn't exist back then. That was just what the majority of games were like. Back then, games were much smaller, and even the largest companies of the time had a fraction of the resources they do nowadays.
@@nerd_nato564 ok fine, but it is made by one person, just like some games that aren't from companies made by one person
Before "This is not for the faint of heart.", we had "This is not for those of a nervous disposition."
The simplicity honestly adds to the horror element significantly.
The atmosphere is nuts. The monochrome visuals and lack of audio, though limitations of the medium, do so much for the game. I'm sure this was scary back in the day as well, but it feels especially at home nowadays with the popularity of analog horror. Specifically parts like the way "RUN" is the only text that's white in a black box. That minor departure from the norm is so good.
"I haven't programmed that path yet"
I watched that Bιαcκ Mirrοr movie too!
Bandersnatch
I loved watching/playing Bandersnatch
There’s still something very ominous about this game. It almost feels like a retro-style game made for a creepypasta than something that was actually made in the early 80s

The game was initially released by J. K. Greye Software in December 1981 and re-released in 1982 by Evans' own startup, New Generation Software. Rendered using low-resolution character block "graphics", it was one of the first 3D games for a home computer, and one of the first games incorporating typical elements of the genre that would later be termed survival horror.
My friend said I looked like Rex from this game...
Well he's not wrong.
Imagine this game remade today. I honestly think it’d be better with sound.
For example, instead of saying “Footsteps approaching”, you’d actually _hear_ them approaching. Distant at first, then louder and louder. Also, when the Rex starts getting closer, you could hear low growls and snarls as he hunts you. Only when he finally catches up to you does he let out a bellowing roar. It’ll either be your cue to run, or your death knell.
Also, the sound could work both ways. The more noise _you_ make, the faster he’ll find you. It could give the player incentive to avoid sprinting until absolutely necessary.
bsgfan1 I get what you're saying, but if they did remake the game, the text should be kept in. It is part of what made the original such a memorable experience. Plus, I don't think there'd be any sound for a dinosaur seeing something.
P.S. A Tyrannosaurus wouldn't be snarling and growing while sneaking up on prey. It would try to stay as quiet as possible so it's future victim doesn't realize anything's up until it's too late. It probably would roar or make some loud noise when it leaps out at it's target in order to startle it. An animal that's reeling from some kind of shock would be too rattled to start running right away.
Knight of Arkronia Maybe they could add like a classic mode without the sound or something.
Also, paleontologists actually theorized that the T-Rex did make low pitched growls while hunting. So hearing it snarling is still within the realm of possibility and realism.
I think If they were to remake It, they shouldnt change much. The lack of sound and music and the text is what makes It uniquely scary. The 8-Bit T-Rex also is something unique to the game, the game tells you its a T-Rex, but It doesnt look anything like it, making It look like some kind of weird Ghost or Spirit hunting for you, and the sudden appearence of him as he gets closer, along with the face he makes as he is about to devour you. It all makes for a unique and unsettling experience.
I think they should do a paleo accurate roar. Where instead of being am actual roar its a low growl that shakes everything.
The bottom text is what makes the game
This looks quite impressive for a computer horror game at the time, having to avoid a pre-Jurassic Park T.Rex in a maze with no sound. It's actually creepier if it catches you from BEHIND. During this era, I still think Haunted House in the Atari 2600 is scarier. I actually once had a dream similar to this game, but the one who's chasing me is...Cream the Rabbit (she appeared almost the same height as I am [5'7"] in complete detail as her games). Of course, her intention was not to kill, but to HUG, so it was a fun, but unusual dream in reference to this.
No.
Cream the Rabbiy is actually really small.
Then again, it’s your dream.
The lack of sound is giving me anxiety just from watching the video, hahaha.
This game was and still is superb! To think such an effective 3D game was written in 16K - *16K*!!! - is astonishing. I still remember the first time I played this back then.
The game is only 1K isn’t it? The rest is ROM.
@@48kmn13No, it's 16K. You needed a RAM expansion to play it, like pretty much all ZX81 software.
This was an excellent game, blew me away once I first saw the 3D. Rex scared the crap out of you when he popped up.
Back then they used text to indicate that the monster has been alerted but now they use audio cues as in the monster growling, saying a line or making any type of noise. In certain games they use both of these systems.
3:40 now I have nightmares.
I thought this was SO Amazing when I was a kid.
If we were good on school We could stay late and play this game.
Till I received one for xmas !
What this is really missing, is the buzz from the cathode ray tube affecting the sound coming out of the TV speaker, changing pitch each time the screen changes... probably a black and white TV, with 3-4 clunking buttons and an on off heavy turn dial, in a wood pattern casing.
Those were the days.
i played this in a crowded room at a convention on a little CRT and it was still totally pants-shittingly tense. i think it's the completely stark atmosphere that really adds to it.
I was so scared of this
The fact without sound or anything this game can be scary on such a minimalistic level
The fact a pixelated dinosaur scares you more with only bottom text than most the horror games today (excluding the jumpsares in them, it is only natural to flinch.)
Boy, did I love this game! It was like nothing I'd seen before!
This is actually pretty unsettling
There’s no sound, just pixels, no sounds at all, the text make it weirder
It’s just straight forward and kind of weird
“Footsteps approaching”
“Rex lies in wait”
“Rex has seen you”
“Run he is behind you”
It’s straight forward and gives tension and eerie vibes with no sound effects, and then when it suddenly appears it’s still creepy as he suddenly pops us, ain’t no way this can be remade with the same charm or eeriness. If they remade this it would probably be a dumb jumpscare fest, not to mention the lack of sound and odd pixels were what made it scary
I honestly feel the limited graphics and lack of color give the game a bit more eerieness.
We've come a long way...impressive & thanks for the video
I think this will make me up all night
Jeez! The graphics on this are insane!!!
That final portal made me scary at first time I seen, then Rex caught me up few steps before get out of the maze. I was a child but that first "almost did" which would remain for the rest of my life.
This scared the crap out of my dad lol
I can’t remember if this has an end or if you’re forever doomed to run around in that maze with Rex, there?
This thing and the yeti from Ski Free were some of the few things in videogames that scared me when i was a kid...
I can't even look at this for too long it hurts my eyes

Man the 80s must have been a scary time for things like this
I wonder if the tone in this inspired the horror in the Jurassic Park novel
No unexpected jumpscares, no sudden appearances, and no sound, and yet more extremely terrifying than many of today's horror films or games!
The dialogue in this is so posh. It kinda makes it a little bit funny. That dinosaur is still really scary tho
The horror is found in it's simplicity.
Dude this is so old and its incredible the fact that this is scarier than fnaf3 lol
Still scarier than Resident evil 7
Yep.
Elude or feed. It's that simple.
Screw eluding, I would feed on the overgrown lizard's carcass instead.
the old days where games would go like around 15 FPS
Is it just me or does it scare me a little? The words like *Footsteps Approaching.* or *He is hunting for you.* just gives me the chills!
A horror game that actually causes me to panic.

*RUN* HE'S BEHIND YOU
Why are the text so unsettling. Especially the "Run he has seen you" and why is the t-rex so scary. He is just some pixels. When he gets up close and you see his teeth and true disturbing face it gives me chills. How is this scarier than most horror games
Nightmare fuel this is unsettling
for a game that has no sound and the most primative graphics humanly possible, it is pretty terrifying
not gonna lie this is scarier than most of the horror game nowadays...
For the first horror game, it is terrifying.
Before Gmod NextBots, we had 3D Monster Maze.
This game made Tyrannosaurs more scary than Jurassic Park
What the actual fuck, why is this so scary. It's so pixelated it shouldn't be, but it just is.

This actually looks terrifying ngl
This game is like in PLAYTOWN, is first horror video game and first video game 3D and with chase sequence like in POPPY PLAYTIME and in JOYVILLE
Any game with a Trex chasing you gives you a fright to run.
bro i dont even want to watch this i'm that scared right now it's so eerie
It's almost 40 year old game and it still scares me.
Ik it’s some pixelated drawing of a dinosaur by the atmosphere of the game was so unnerving that I got spooked by it.
The first 3D game.
This is the grandpappy of all Horror games.
The text itself was the base of the horror game. No sounds, no music, just you and the “dinosaur” but it looks more like a ghost than actual dinosaur
Five and a bit year old me thought this was amazing (and scary!)
*Run* He is behind you.
how? Seriously, how is this even possible?
Nothing could be saved or loaded into the Timex Sinclair, so how did we get this game into our computer? Did we type it in?
Feels like we're getting scared by the scary shadow 😱. Ohh would be amazing and intense if this game had a creepy sound
The closer it gets the more ghostly it becomes
One thing what bothers me is that how can such a huge creature like Tyrannosaurus Rex fit in such small maze? 🤔🤷♂️❓
Small..?
Even the first horror game was a high score based game
I have always imagined him as a giant pale bald man with a wide creepy smile, like SCP-096 but worse
