  • After 19 years with a 25 hp two stroke Yamaha Outboard with over 5,000 hours I decided to make the switch to a 25 hp fuel injected four stroke Yamaha Outboard ....Definitely quieter but the throttle response is something to get use to.....This motor is quick to say the least....A reel big upgrade along with a Permatrim Cavitation Plate to my skinny water tunnel boat!!

    This is the dream, the boathouse, the boat, motor, location; this is the life. I even dig that private looking launch ramp. Makes me homesick for Florida. Keep posting, your fishing setup is a joy to watch.

      Thanks Rande!! I've managed 2 hours on the motor because of a week of small craft advisories but those 2 hours were enough to know there is a learning curve after 19 years with the 2 stroke.....I definitely got a feel for what I can and can't do and most of the problems was do to the extended length of the tiller which I corrected with a new adjustable tiller extension......Last Friday was the ride from hell!! There's always a learning curve.....LOL!!😎

    I bought a four stroke Yamaha 20 hp in 2015 for my boat. It has been the best outboard motor I’ve ever had in my life. Not one hiccup. Not one. Quiet efficient. I’m glad to see you are still drafting the same. Well done, sir. And congratulations on your purchase.

    Very nice upgrade Wes. On plane you hear more wind and water noise than engine sound.
    Better always wear the kill switch lanyard for sure. It's hard to beat the consistency of power from EFI.

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thanks!! The throttle response takes some getting use to because I seriously tried to hurt myself a few times but that was because the tiller extension I've been using for years was to long and a bit flimsy....I found another Minn Kota that adjusts from 17 to 25 inches and is a lot stronger. I'm hoping the range is at least 10 mpg but until I get through this 20 hour break in stage I'm still in the dark. I found out when I switched from a 15 to the 25 2 stroke in 2005 10 hp makes a big difference.....I know that after going under the bridge and throttling up I got thrown over the back of the boat with the kill switch attached to my pants....Nothing like learning the hard way.....Sometimes that seems like the story of my life.....LOL!!

    Nice motor and rig. I went with the new Mercury 25. My first ever brand new outboard, i fricken love these EFI 4 strokes. With power trim it can push my 16ft deep-v 28 mph, and my last trip went roughly 35 miles on 2.7 gallons thats insane! I got my eye on a used Yamaha F25 when they pop up for sale, might buy one just to tinker with and compare with the Merc cuz I can always sell it to the duck hunters come fall. I know u guys down south prefer no power trim in case u hit something but I love mine.

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  Před měsícem +1

      Tie one On.....Thanks!! I used Johnson/Evinrude for years but when they were bought out I switched out to Yamaha on both the CC and the skinny water boat. It's been a bit of a curve to get use to the EFI but the efficiency has been outstanding @ 10+ mpg!! My tunnel restricts the use of T/T just because I draft only 5" of water so a manual T/T was the best choice and the fact that this area is all hard lime rock bottom with big chunks of the stuff and the use of locked T/T will get your lower unit destroyed in the blink of an eye....Good to hear you're getting such great results.....I just completed my 20 hour break-in and I know I've been sold from day one.....Enjoy your week....Sea Ya!!😎

    Nice one Wes! A couple of days ago I purchased a Tracker Grizzly 1448. All I need for it now is a motor. I was considering a 2024 Tohatsu 20 or 25hp but as I'm new to boats, I'm kind of lost concerning shaft length as the boats transom measures out to 18 inches. What would you recommend - a short shaft or long shaft?

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  Před měsícem

      Thanks FFH!! I'm now on my 3rd motor on the skinny water boat.... one 15 hp Evinrude, one 25 hp Yamaha 2 stroker and my last one is a 25 hp 4 stroker Yamaha all short shafts!! I would say go with the 25 hp with the model of your choice........with the short shaft.... as long as the boat will run with the short shaft......A long shaft up there is an accident lookin' for a rock to take off your lower unit!! Depending where you travel water depth is the determining factor and at times it can be at a premium!! There are plenty of times I get the Pucker Factor even with the shorty and I'm running the tunnel!! You should get 10 miles to the gallon with the 25.....That's what I'm getting with the 4 stroke Yamaha and I'm carrying a 6 gallon tank....But a 3 gallon would work for an up and back trip figuring about 15 to 17 miles. Got more Q's fire away.....Sea Ya!!

    • @FFHTV
      @FFHTV Před měsícem +1

      Thanks Wes! Short shaft it is! For more adjustability, I was thinking of going with a "onthefly" jack plate as well. What are your thoughts on jack plates?

    • @WesLovelace
      @WesLovelace  Před měsícem

      @@FFHTV I've got a stationary plate on my center console which took the 70 hp Yamaha about 8 inches off the transom and and with the Permatrim Cavitation plate I get the hole shot without using trim tabs!! The plate will allow you to adjust the motor height and I know you can get them in manual /electric and hydraulic.....The higher you can get that motor in the water column without cavitation the better!! My tunnel doesn't allow me to go any higher because the tunnel was designed with a short shaft in mind.....Adding the tunnel extension, the cavitation plate and the 4 blade prop is all I can add.....I'm maxx'd out at this point.....Sea Ya!!
