Celebrate the history of 611 and its 2015 re-steaming in this ALL ACTION DVD!
Streamlined engine number 611, known as “The Spirit of Roanoke,” emerged from Norfolk and Western’s Roanoke shops on May 29, 1950, and remains, today, the sole survivor in the 4-8-4 J class. The pride of Norfolk and Western, the J Class represented the pinnacle of its steam engineering and construction. Designed for speed and agility, the 611, along with other J-Class locomotives, proudly powered the famed Powhatan Arrow, Cavalier, Pocahontas, and other named N&W passenger trains. Like a cat with many lives, 611 escaped demise, persevering due, not only to its exceptional design and capabilities, but to some unusual twists of fate.
