*What do you think guys.... will it work?* đ
ive made a few boards n its seems like the supply store screwed you a little with bad info, but your board should still rip!
Should be just fine, if those fins aren't solid you might want to bring it over to Joe Roper's, they can just pull them out and fix them worst case.
Im so excitet so see you surf with your own Board:) when Comes the next Episode? Greetings from nonSurfabel Switzerland :(
it will work maybe 1 or 2 surf and then , it will drink water and delaminate if it didnt break before in half before that =), glassing is the most difficult part on surfboard shapping. Your resin mix seemed very liquid too me , you didnt cut your lap enough obviously you should have waited before hotcoat . sanding all bubble wrinkle , is very important because your board will be weak if you dont do it and it will delaminate it is really hard to fix afterward once everything is hotcoated... bare with my english im french .
still working though!
Like you, I've watched dozens of other glassing videos. I learned more from yours than all of them combined. We really only learn from making mistakes. And the first time you try any job, it always takes 3x-5x the time you think it should. "I never want to do this again." Haha, something you can only learn after having done. Totally been there, brother. Thanks for sharing the best glassing tutorial on CZcams.
haha thanks so much man! đ
yay !
Couldnât have said it better
I know it's already been said, but my daughter and I are getting ready to do our first glass our job and learned so much from this video. Good for you for taking a risk and sharing it with sincerity and humility.
love to hear that, good luck with your project đ
Thanks for posting the whole process including mistakes. I believe it helps first-timers way more than most of the smooth/perfect tutorials that no first-timers will achieve.
definitely, glad you appreciated it :)
I shaped and glassed 4 boards back in the day and I'm with you, I don't ever want to do it again!
hahaha that's a good number!
I always found the best time to glass a board is when the surf is shit and its gone raining or on a colder day.
That'll help with working time and keep you in the mood rather than thinking of the surf.
I wasn't blessed with You Tube back in the day.
This dude is really brave posting this attempt.
haha thanks buddy!
This video is a great warning for first timers. I'm glassing my first board tomorrow, and now I know some things to watch out for. Wish me luck.
good luck man! glad you watched my vid first to avoid some mistakes yourself đ
I've loved every video in this series. Thanks for doing it! Can't wait to see how it rides
thanks for watching! đ
Uhg that glassing makes me wanna help u... my first board looked similar but on my second one I got my head wrapped around it and with more prepping it worked very well
hahaha i def could have used help đ
I think the board actually looks pretty cool! Great job man!đ
thanks man đ
That board may not look the best but that shape looks like such fun and it's a twin... so loose (that's what she said). I hope it rides fun and I catch you with it somewhere in the local SD line-up and I can try it out for shits and giggles. At least you can say you did it, not to many surfers can say they made a board and then ride it. Well done brother!
haha thanks man, yeah if you can find me you can ride it!
Boxes are supposed to be set and cured before you lam the bottom. Alo helps to get the cant angle right too
was trying find vids for new board inspo and came across this, loved it haha!
haha awesome, thanks for watcing! Good luck with your board :)
Everyone has to start somewhere. Here's a to-do list for the next time
1. buy your supplies from Surfsupply in Oceanside, not Mitch's. The cost savings are well worth the drive. Plus, they give your your glass fabric on a roll, not folded and stuffed into a plastic bag.
2. Their Apex line of epoxy is a great bargain. If you buy a 1.5 gal kit your cost for resin is ~$40/board so long as you don't waste it.
4. Don't do color with epoxy until your glassing skills improve. It messes with the mix ratio, it cuts into your working time with the resin and color in epoxy never comes out as even or as clean as color in regular polyester resin. Just don't do it. If you want color on a board with epoxy glassing then you can put your color directly on the blank: chalk, spray paint, posca pen, etc. Or you can put color on the outside of your glass job.
5. Use vinegar from the grocery store to clean up epoxy. Never use acetone or other thinners. Vinegar is way cheaper than acetone, it works, and it's not toxic like acetone or paint thinner.
6. Blow the blank off with an air compressor or canned air. Dust on the blank interferes with your bond.
7. Tape the foam around your finbox install so that when the cavity overflows you won't get it on your foam, You may need a couple inches of tape around each side of the cavity
8. After you rout your finbox, lay the finpatch over that - by itself. This is a trick for beginners - if you do this you won't have to hassle the bubble factor around your boxes during your main lamination. And you can cut a really clean finpatch. Finbox installs need more glass over them, especially if you're running large twins or keels with a lot of surface area - and which applies a lot of torque while you're turning. Never do just one layer of cloth over a finbox or plugs. Or even under a glass-on install.
9. Tape your lap lines off on the "dry" side of the blank relative to your lamination, and plan on laying the glass all the way around the apex of the rail to the lap line. Lay the tape flat and press it down hard so it really sticks to the foam, otherwise epoxy will seep under the tapeline. This is another reason you need to make sure there's no dust on the blank when you start to glass.
10. Razor cut the lapline after the resin sets to the hard but still slightly sticky stage. If you cut too soon you'll make a mess and if you cut too late the hardened epoxy will be hard to cut
11. Do not touch a lamination with your bare hands. Always wear gloves. The oils in your skin will mess with the resin. Epoxy is super sensitive that way.
Now go back and take another swing at it.
The board looks great Iâm in the process of shaping one of my own
good luck man, it's tough huh!
Thatâs the best glassing vid Iâve ever seen. Please do more boards.
Iâm dying. You are a legend
hahaha more coming soon
Kudos for just going for it. Glassing boards is a skill and an art form that deserves way more respect than it gets.
seriously! I have so much more respect for it now. My next one will be better ;)
Example on how not to glass a board
for sure haha
oh it's finished! Been riding it a bunch, and it's actually holding up haha
HEATH COCKBURN - no shit!
I was cringing throughout. đ€Ł
Ya. I'm no glassing expert, but that was an extra shitty glass job!
You did it! Amazing, glassing is the toughest part for most board makers, because there are tons of things you need to learn to do it right, and for the pros they need to do it without any mistakes and fast. Respect to the pro glassers out there!
If you knew how fast the epoxy was going to set, with color mixed right you would have a much better experience, but you still saved the board, awesome!
The fish looks like it works well, congrats to you!
Ray StPierre
thank you! đ
it was a good learning experience
Dude, protect your lungs when sanding that glass!
true
I took a break from surfing videos but I remembered this one and just had to find it
thanks for watching đ
This has made me want to try making a surfboard . Looks like a really cool process. Very spiritual
yeah, definitely takes a lot of time
is the hot coat just the same epoxy and hardener as for the glassing?
Yup it's the same resin as the first coat, but without adding another layer of fiberglass cloth
Thanks for showing your mistakes. It was far more helpful than many videos in which they do everything perfect
Stoked you enjoyed. Hoping to get another shaping video for the future đ€đ
I would avoid all black. Can de-lam easily from the heat. Also suit up, glove up, and wear a respirator when you sand, brah! Youâll get a bad rash with the fiberglass dust. One more thing, try using UV curing. Gives you all the time you need. Work in your garage with windows n doors blacked out, and when youâre done glassing, just expose it to sun light or turn on an UV light set up. Donât forget to label your dimensions and sign it
Thanks man! Yeah I considered using UV cure, but my buddy had a bad experience with it, so I chose epoxy instead
Hi, im sorry stevie would please let me know the name of the tools that you use for the fin boxes set up.. please thanks
I wish I knew haha... I think just a router and jig (the jig is something specific for fin boxes I believe)
Hey Stevie, I'm wanting to paint my fish black but people say the wax will melt really fast is that right?
it will if you leave it in the sun, same as a white surfboard haha. Just keep it out of direct sunlight and you will be fine
Good on you for pushing through with final stages on your own! Enjoy my money is on you making another one.
đ
I've been using epoxy resin to do a bunch of ding repair on some epoxy finished boards...Resin Research Systems and it takes forever to kick. Surprised yours kicked so fast....what brand epoxy is that if you don't mind me asking? Also, theres the secret that I found out about later with finish coats on epoxy, additive F!
thanks for the advice... I don't remember which brand I used
Aaja man i loved your attitude... you just not stressing out , just xhilling and trying to get things done. Similar things happened to me when i did my first fixes but with little practice, it gets better. Peace
yeah man, gotta keep it chill đ€
Hilarious, real shit, great vid:)
đđ€
Do you have any refferation to the articles you read before starting? Thanks
can't remember, just google how to glass surfboard
Whatâs that pigment called? Iâm trying to refurbish a paddle board.
think it's just called pigment! Resin pigment maybe?
Did you spackle the blank before you glassed? Epoxy resin will soak into eps foam and not cure properly if the blank isn't sealed.
spackle?
@@HoStevie yeah.. or joint compound or wall patching compound. you water it down with distilled water til it's the consistency of pancake batter then spread it on the blank thoroughly. give it a light sand to smooth it off after it dries. blow the dust off and then you're ready to glass. otherwise the epoxy resin will soak into the foam and the laminating layer won't cure properly.
Is this board still surfing or has it delaminated? Thanks for the video, it gave me a good insight into what I am about to get into hahah!
it's still going strong! a couple dings, but everything is still watertight đ
Best glassing video ever funny and real good job man
haha thank you :D
Yea I think it will work pretty well
This looks like a lot of fun đđŒ
thanks man! It was a lot of work, but very rewarding đ
What happened to this board in the end? Did it break?
surfed it today! Still going strong :)
I think it looks stellar!
yewwww! đ
Itâll work. The thermal reaction from the resin pooling in that misrouted fin box will probably make it delaminate over time, but enjoy the board for now.
yup still going strong!
brah get your mommy to call the fire dept if a spotted dog in a fire chiefs helmet knocks at your door its the right address. !!!!!!!!!! SURFS UP
So you bought 1,5 liters of resin? was that enough?
I don't remember, but I remember I had at least SOME left over. It might have been close though
Stevie, where did you buy the material? I live in Tijuana and I am looking for a place I can buy resin and fiberglass. If you can give me the address and the name it would be a great help, thanks. Nice job by the way
Mitch's Surf Shop 631 Pearl St, La Jolla, CA 92037 đ€
How were the fumes from the epoxy? I used polyester to fix/glass the nose of my board and I feel so sick that idk if I ever want to mess with glassing again
I really appreciate how jank the bottom glassing was, good to know Iâm not struggling alone lmao
not bad at all! that's one of the selling points for epoxy. no/low fumes.
I think it'll work great!
đ will find out very soon!
Hello Stevie,
you made me laugh! This is me with my first board (a wood tiki for kitesurfing). Like you I've never worked with resin and I've learn a lot. People around me gave me advices, but theory is theory, pratice is another world. I had to sand down a lot, redo the coats, etc... I should have made a video like yours... Don't give up, do another one to learn out of your mistakes. Where are you based? I'm from France.
haha yes, a good learning experience!
I'm in San Diego, California đ€
Such a sick series and the boards shape looks so fun. If you do another one use the same shape but without the black pigment.
but i liiiiike em black!
Next time; mix up a small small amount of resin, put the boxes in with dummy fins and use a protractor to check the angles are correct. Let those harden. And then put the cloth over the board, and pour a lot right down the stronger then slowly work it into the cloth. Donât just pour small bits on different areas. Itâs easier and the finish will come out better. Also make sure that you donât leave pools of resin on the board to dry, it will have a weird surface. You wanna be able to see the weave all over uniformly
nice, thank you! Yeah the fin boxes did not go so well haha, I think one of them is starting to pull out now :(
Hopefully the resin holds the fin box because it looks like it would be a fun board
held up this morning!
Hey! Keep working! Done 3 boards already but a lot to learn still! This Will work anyway but not at best! Glassing is still scary and Speedy đč. Cheers from France.
haha good to know, thanks buddy đ€
Came out better than my first board! Haha! Itâs not easy! How does it ride though?
Definitely not easy! Gotta wait for the fins to get here this week, and then if there's waves i can try it out
I really enjoyed your very painful to watch video but I admire that you did it . You've inspired me to go ahead and make my own board. Thanks for sharing.
hahaha thank you hugo, good luck with your surfboard đ
where did you get a foam 71$ blank!!!!
Mitch's in La Jolla
Im not a shaper, but i have fixed some ding on my boards.
I belive that you should have done it away from the sunlight.
Some resins cure very fast when exposed to UV light. Maybe if it was done inside the house, you would had enough time to saturate de cloth properly.
But it came out really nive for a first board! congratulations!
thanks buddy! đ€
yo that motorcycle jump was sick
đ€đ€
1. Horrible routing! Ask somebody how to keep router in your hands at least.
2. Mask finboxes with tape in advance, before glassing and cut out extra tape!! Glass boxes in board in advance before glassing too!! You forgot to put football shaped glass patches over finboxes before glassing to reinforce boxes in foam.
3. Glassing was a mess. Pour all the bucket around board and spread resin well towards the edges. Be quick. You must saturate the edges and wrap them around from bottom to the top of the board. If you cant do it in time, mix half of the needed resing and glass only half of the board. The immidietly glass the other half of the board when the first batch is still wett and tacky. All the glass must be saturated and mesh and fiber must come invisible after proper saturation!!! This is the most important moment of the glassing. No saturation of glass = no strength = crappy board!
4. You didn't laminated and cut off most of your overlaps! Wrong, very wrong!
5. Top glassing was way more better! But you can see how uneven unsanded overlaps from bottom bulid up to ugly ridges and you will have to sand them down later.
6. Wrong! Unfinished top overlaps = more messy work later and more sanding!
7. Your sanding was not sanding. You must sand whole board to really clean smooth shape without any ridges before gloss coat or you get more huge unwanted build up ridges to sand down!!!
8. You must glass unglassed exposed places!
9. Gloss coat was the biggest disaster. đ€Šââïž
10. Hey, you didn't sand it at all! You barely touched it. Sanding is very very important and creates final shape of your board. I usually put one more hot coat of epoxy after proper sanding. I fill all the bubbles and holes!
11. That seller from shop which told you to put whole pigment in resin is complete idiot and should pay u all the wasted money!!! Kick his ass.
Ruined work allways sucks. đ€ That shape before glassing looked very good. đ
12. Get rid of pigment until you really learn glassing đ
13. Always use the best respirator when you sand, that resin/glass dust is very nasty stuff.
14. You gained lot of experience. Do another board, get better and don't forget to share it with us! Youe progress will grow very rapidly since now. đđđ»
15. Watch more glassing videos over and over, you will learn a lot.
16. Save your first shape work your board No. 1 and be proud of it. Hey your forget to sign it! đ
Very good tips, thank you! đ
damn chill
Itâs his first time bro Relax bruh
Love the vid
Just started surfingđđđ€
hell yeah welcome to the club!
The window of time to trim the glass hanging is like thirty minutes.the grinding room is a dirty pit wear protection ...paper clothes and mask for dust protection .add more glass and reinforcement ..it will work...I used to paint a few boards and watch the shapers.
đ€
This makes me appreciate the process! Now Iâm going to my surf shop and drop $900 on a Lost board.
Hahahah go make it happen amigo. I picked up a libtech model from them and have been ripping it for 7 years strait đđœ thing doesn't break
Please make another shaping video!
đđ»đ
I want to have Tanner Bendheim make one for me! But we will make a video of it
To make a perfect board look and performance.
You have to take your time.
With it.
that's for sure!
not the nicest i've seen but... hey man YOU DID IT!!! i would be glad if my first board looks like this!!! and i'm sure it woks!
haha definitely not the nicest, but it does work! đ
You probably couldâve stuck to 4 x 4 x 4 glassing if youâre using the epoxy resin. It would be lighter and the epoxy resin would be stronger
Great job man. It will surf.
đ
Dang man I think it turned out pretty good! Canât wait to see you shred on it đȘđŒđđđ»ââïž
đ€đ€
doesnt your wax melt on the black board?
only if you leave it in the sun... same as a white board.
Anyways this board uses front and rear traction pads, no wax đ
use a heat gun or hair dryer after you brush on the hot coat, it will pop all air bubbles
cool, good tip!
...or use Additive-F
This certainly makes me rethink glassing the thing I just shaped
yeah it's a big process
Painfull to watch. But i remember glassing my first. It went way better than you,so decided i would do it for a living. 40 years later and a few hundred thousand boards later i can tell you that it wont work any better or worse it just wont win any cosmetic awards.
Just keep on doing it. You cant really ruin a board with a really bad glass job.
Ah that's epic man! Funny how people get into their careers without expecting to
Ryan Morgan u mean a soft top or a blank?
Never say never! I would say learn from this experience and when you have another chance to shape/glass a board, then you'll definitely know what NOT to do.
haha true
Good effort. I lolâed a few times bc I do the same shit work whenever I try doing my own board work. You learn a lot by fucking up...
hahaha honestly the best way to learn is by fucking up
Didnât turn out the greatest but hey man keep it up if thatâs what you want to do and youâll get the hang of it. My first board turned out so so but thankfully the company I ride for letâs me work in the shop so Iâve been getting better and schooled by some of the best shapers on the east coast.
yup practice makes perfect!
This is the best video on the internet.
đ„yessss đ
I just fixed my old bilt surfboard and you did a way better job with the epoxy then me.đ€
haha thanks, hopefully yours is ok?
Sickđ€
thanks man! đ€
dang it was dope man
yewww! đ€
does riding a black board get hot
no but it does get very hot if I leave it in the sun. The nice thing about this fish is that I put front traction on it instead of wax, so there is no wax to melt hostevie.com/shop/surfboard-front-traction-pad.html
Hey Dude, Dont give up.......try again. This will be the hardest one. You have learnt what not to do......the ZEN of Learning. Cheers
hah that is true
the air bubbles and the overlapping makes the board look sickkkkk,
haha thanks đ
Functional. Should have taped off overlapped side. Ya could have sanded the hell out of the rails. Good job. â€â€
Hey, for your first glassing on your own, not bad at all. This is how you learn. Plus, I think all the errors when glassing and sanding that appear in white gave to it a cool style and desing. Way to go. Fuck it! It's a fish, it's black, it's messy and I like it. Surfing punk style!
hahaha hell yeah!
Hi - don't be too hard on yourself - you did a great first job - not easy - very hard to do but well done! - Phil in UK
Thanks Phil! đ€
Although it didn't quite go to plan, you have inspired me to have a go.... how hard can it be ????/ haha
you got this!
Super cool đ€
thanks buddy! đ€
.....another tip.... Never use a fast hardner with epoxy....take you time. Is not a question of fast timing. Accuracy is the major point. Re-trimming everything when is cured....is a disaster. Now you know. There is no reason for rush and use a mask!!!!
good work brother. Like the background....never Surf the Avalanches
thanks man!
You've inspired me to give it a try. Who cares how it looks, you gotta start somewhere right?
exactly! good luck go get it
Iâm not a shaper but I want to be and i want to learn from you bro, this big help For me thanks for this video I really appreciate it keep it up đ€đ€đ€BIG THANKS đ
thanks for watching man, good luck with your board(s)!
Good video and props for doing it but next time lol pour that resin a little bit quicker. Either way good video dude and keep on with it
haha yes I definitely learned my lesson! đ
This gets funnier as it goes...trust :)
đ
I think doing this is great. At the least you get a greater appreciation for shapers. I feel like I've learned from watching these vids, thanks.
yeah I've definitely gained an appreciation for shapers and glassers!
What is a hotcoat?
just a layer of resin, without the fiberglass cloth. it comes out really smooth
Wow thank you so much
love it !!! alwayes worth trying :)
at least once haha
is that going to work?
surprisingly it does!
Glasses his first board with epoxy. Your a beast dude!
lol đ€
Smoke another one bra your killing me
đ€Łđ€
So sick.

I don't know about anyone else but I put the fin boxes in after I glass everything
đ€š hmm interesting
What actually is the hot coat is that just the is epoxy heated
not heated but yes just the resin. It actually gets hot as it cures!
Thank you so much making my own surfboard
@@jacobturner2759 good luck, lemme know how it goes!
I will great channel love the videos and this one has helped me so much
