Many people ended up with signed copies of him on vinyl.

As a teen in the 70s, my dad hated all of the pop, rock, and disco. He liked country music only. But he loved this song because my youngest brother's name is Daniel. So my Dad would let us play EJs greatest hits when he and mom were in the living room. He then really started to like the music of Elton John. It's strange how one song can change a person's opinion on music in general.

I have a twin brother named Daniel, who passed away very tragically back in 1998. My family was utterly devastated by his sudden departure. The evening after his funeral, I was home alone in my apartment, weeping over our loss. My faith was strong that his spirit was still alive, so before going to bed, I prayed out loud, talking to him as if Daniel was still in the room with me. I said, "Danny, please send me a signal that you're okay "on the other side". I went to bed. When I woke up the next morning to get ready for work, I turned on the radio and prepared my breakfast, going about my normal morning routine. As soon as the radio turned on, Elton's song DANIEL began playing from the start IMMEDIATELY (with no radio voice over or commercial before it). I stood there in stunned awe, crying my eyes out, with chills also running up and down my spine. It was the first time I TRULY HEARD THE HAUNTING LYRICS OF THAT SONG! My prayer was answered by my brother! I thanked him out loud. That experience helped me to heal faster than my other family members. I still see him in dreams and visions from time to time. We all live on, folks. This beautiful song will always be apart of that eternal lesson! Thank you, Sir Elton!

Bernie Taupin wrote "Daniel" while inspired by the events of the Vietnam War. The lyrics (including a verse in the original draft that was cut from the final version) describe a fictional veteran who was blinded as a result of the war ("your eyes have died"/"but you see more than I") and travels to Spain to escape those around him back home ("do you still feel the pain"/"of the scars that won't heal?"), including his brother, from whose point of view the story is told.[4]

    • @1060michaelg

Rusty--- Heh, yeah this IS a rather sticky wicket, innit? No one is trying to sound cruel to people like Terry or any Elton fan (I count myself among them) when we point out the obvious (and inevitable) and that is this: Elton's voice is a faint shadow of what it once was. I don't believe there is any more ability to hit the "Elton" notes. This is problematic because so MANY of his greatest hits feature at some point a falsetto. I saw him in 1994 at Ohio State football stadium with Billy Joel who was in the middle of his RIVER OF DREAMS tour (which I saw as well). Even in '94 Elton's voice was not up to the material, but he was able to finesse a lower range falsettto...and not one person among the 80,000 people present cared. We love the Man AND the Artist. Billy is having those problems today, has been for some time and his fans, me among them, still enjoy listening...but it is NOTHING like it used to be, and not as entertaining. We know they are doing the "autotune" gimmick and I would hate to see Elton or Billy stay too long at the fair, in this case the arena. So, when a fan calls Elton's performance "perfect", it's time we stopped pretending that our heroes are "Past it". They are elderly now. Hell, I was 17 when in 1977 I became a Billy Joel fanatic. Now, I am 57---Billy is 68 and Elton is 70. Very few singers keep their range into old age. Two that stand out are Neil Sedaka and Michael Martin Murphy who on the David Letterman Show performed "Wildfire" 30 years after it's release...and sang it in the ORIGINAL KEY. The falsetto was not diminished in the slightest, It's fabulous to see and hear but it's rare. Sorry for the novel.

Our son, Daniel, died when he was 3...
We went away together as a family last weekend, to mark his 13th heaven day. He would have turned 16 last October and I know he would have been such a fun kid to watch grow up. Daniel was so smart and funny and compassionate towards others. He loved his big sister and I know he told his little sister about us, before she joined us, here on earth.
I absolutely love this song and picturing Daniel waving goodbye... until we meet again. Our friend wrote a song about our Daniel... it's on CZcams... Daniel's Song (I'll Come Home to You), about dancing down the streets of gold together in heaven one day and singing over the rainbow (he loved movies, especially The Wizard of Oz). I hope it blesses others who hear it and encourages them to enjoy their kids and loved ones. ❤️ 🌈

I burst into tears when Elton stood up and said, "Sure" and then began playing. I'm not really a person who cares about lyrics or gets emotional when listening to music. Yes, I've cried while listening to music, but rarely ever have I cried BECAUSE of music. But here I am, crying the rest of the song through. I don't know someone named Daniel or have lost someone very close to me yet, thankfully... But this display of the highest humanity and art really has touched me.

I'm actually crying a river here, not only because this version is so beautiful, but also because of the pure, honest simplicity with which he granted the man his wish. The actual story behind the song Daniel.. Bernie Taupin wrote "Daniel" after reading an article in either Time or Newsweek about a Vietnam War veteran who had been wounded, and wanted to get away from the attention he was receiving when he went back home. A verse in the original draft was cut from the final version, which has led to some speculation on the contents.
"'Daniel' had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written," explained Taupin, "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home.". The audience members tribute / request for his friend that had passed is very touching & nice, I'm glad he told it..

I absolutely LOVE this man! I've been privileged to see him twice in concert: once in the late 90's as a solo-tour, with just him and his piano. And the second was in 2010 or 2011 during the "Rocket Man" tour.
I've been watching clips tonight of famous artists who have died. And mark my words: my heart will be torn in two when Elton's time comes to a close. I'm just thankful that he's stayed away from heavy drugs and alcohol, unlike all those before him: Garcia, Joplin, Morrison, Hendrix, and Presley. He'll be with us for a long while yet. But like all of us: someday, his name will be called. I'll bawl like a child when he goes. Love you, Elton.

Actually he has suffered from drug and alcohol problems as well as bulimia and had a drug overdose on at least one occasion. He has stated that he considered himself very lucky not to have contracted HIV considering his highly promiscuous lifestyle. I think that's what is appealing about Elton is that he managed to get through it all and stay alive even with his problems, and he gives such a large part of himself to his fans and his organizations . He shows that you can struggle and still make it, the road isn't always a soft one.

i never took this as a song about death, but my wife did. so i looked it up on wikipedia and as explained there, according to the songwriter, its about a vietnam vet that loses his sight at war, returns home to little support, so moves to Spain to start over, as told by his brother. its a fictional story, but has many meanings and is touching in different ways to each listener. thats what makes this a legendary song.

The night after Jim Croce was killed, Elton sang this song in his honor at a concert in Greensboro. The power of emotion in his lyrics is incredible and his music will live on for generations.

Edward's disappointment concerning the lack of an explanation about the John/Taupin
song "Daniel" merits an explanation, and (tryithere) answered it correctly. Thank you both. The back story is that on their first American tour in 1970, both Taupin and John were moved by some of the Vietnam War Vets the ran into at the concerts. Taupin made some notes and wrote much of the composite song lyrics that would make their way into "Madman Across the Water" in 1971 but "Daniel didn't appear until 1973 album "Don't shoot me I'm only the Piano Player" album, with the movie theatre marquee on the cover...Berine Taupin explains "Daniel: 'Daniel' had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written," "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam War. They'd lauded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But, he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home." The blindness was added via "poetic license" from Bernie." I hope this explanation helps, its great to witness everyone going out of their way to help provide an answer to an honest question, if only our nation's leader's could be as forthcoming..."

It's strange how songs can resonate with us, for whatever reason.
This song does that. The thing is, I have no "Daniel" stories or know of anyone close to me that had that name. It is just how melodic this tune is.
At 65 years old, one would think that I would eventually get "over" this song but every damn time I hear it, I shut everything out-close my eyes- and am moved. Every.Damn.Time.
    What a song.
