I was infinitely blessed. I married a man from a large family with a horrible father who was never in the military. I could NEVER understand how his kids defended him and mourned at his funeral. I refused to go and be a hypocrite. After listening to his narration of this story and his closing statement...i began to understand a little of my husband's feelings for his dad. I just realized why baby boomers had so many drunken fathers. They didn't have PTSD in WW II, and no therapy for PTSD. They called it shell shock or battle fatigue but didn't do anything to treat it, really. They got drunk instead. Veterans were just expected to continue to function as if they weren't traumatized. Veterans didn't come home from the war and become homeless single guys begging in the street. They came home, got a job, got married, had a bunch of kids and became drunken fathers. The horrors of the war played out subconsciously in their families because they never talked about what they had experienced in the war.

My Dad got permission to sign up at 16. He was in Korea and Vietnam. He had BAD PTSD. And he would be get drunk and snap. He had a gun and swung it around. It was terrifying to experience. I remember my brother and I driving him home. We were 6 or 7. My brother sat on his knees to see over the stirring wheel and I operated the gas and break. We did that more then once but honestly once a month at least.

PBMS123 I can’t believe I’ve never heard about this before. Where’s the best place to find more information? I was aware that even when the VA finally began publicly acknowledging and treating vets with PTSD, it was still frowned upon by more vets than not at first to seek treatment. My dad had severe PTSD from Vietnam, but he refused to acknowledge PTSD even existed. He drank only occasionally, but he and his brother both had brittle, hair-trigger tempers.
