  • The 5 Tips or Golden Rules EVERYBODY should know in order to Succeed at Piano Sight Reading:
    1 - Check the Clefs
    2 - Check the Key Signature *
3 - Check the Time Signature ( and how to count according to the rhythmic structure of the piece )
4 - Check the First Right and Left Hand Notes
5 - Check the main changes of position, dynamics and articulations ... and ...
    6 - GOOD LUCK!!!
    * In the short Video I have called “Accidental” the Element in the Key Signature region ( in this case a Flat Sign ) for the reasons below:
    - Firstly due to the limited amount of time available to make a short ( max 60 seconds ) and accordingly, the impossibility of explaining all the neded details;
    - Another reason is the fact that in English we miss a unique term that would embrace both Flat and Sharp Signs, whereas in many other languages ( for example, in Italian ) there is a term to express both at once and the term is " Alterazioni " ( that in English would sound Alterations, which wouldn’t be relevant for this case).
    Therefore, missing such term, a European like myself tends to naturally and subconsciously use a unique word for both Flats and Sharps;
Initially everybody learns that a Flat or a Sharp Sign is an Accidental and it is called so, meaning that it has limited power, and it can affect just the exact pitch, the exact note before which it is placed and that its effect lasts up to the end of the bar in which it appears.
Subsequently, if it is before a note "b" and during the bar you have one or more Bs before the bar ends, those will be affected by the Flat sign as well.
If any "b" appears in the following bar, according to the most classical theory, it is known that that "b" is automatically Natural.
As a matter of fact, often due to the lack of focus typical to the human nature since ages, there is the habit of adding a Natural Sign as a courtesy!
Sometimes you might encounter European teachers calling the Flats and Sharps - Accidentals, in whichever case ( also if Key Signature Elrments ).
Alongside due explanations, some might keep referring to the term “Accidental” in order to recall the "power" of the element ( the power of raising or lowering the note of one semitone ) clarifying that in the case of a Key Signature element, its power is going to affect every single bar and every single note to which the Sharp or Flat is referring.
All the above is to rectify the concept and explain that the Flats or Sharp appearing in the Key Signature ( in between the Clefs and the Time Signature ) will have power for the length of the whole piece or until you don't get a new Key Signature indication.
I hope it is more clear in this way.

I didn’t know key signatures are called accidentals 😂

    • @PianoLessonstoGo

      Thanks for the funny comment.
Even thought the title of the short included the words “for any grade”, the example shown is a Grade 1 Sight Reading exercise.
I am also aware that I said that the information provided is valid for any grade.
The fact I mention that the information is valid for any grade, actually means that students starting from scratch will find these info valid also when approaching higher grades: then due to the general actual level of preparation or information I notice in medium average students, this short can be anyways helpful for any level.
Students starting from zero, they firstly play just white keys, then they start discovering that the black keys are not only decorations or ways to find the Middle C and other important landmarks of the keyboard, therefore, they learn that ACCIDENTALS can be found along the way, where their power is limited to the lengths of the only bar and that they affect just the specific note, at that specific pitch; then they understand that FLATS or SHARPS can turn KEY ELENTS and determine the identity of A KEY SIGNATURE.
If an higher grade student is still in need of this short, it means that no good work has been done.
After almost thirty years of experience teaching Music, I have learned that the KEY SIGNATURES even though they must be considered statements, they are considered options by all the “undedicated” students.
To take this comment to an end, due to the level ( Grade 1 ) and to the fact that beginner students know those ELEMENTS like accidentals, it has been taken the “hard” and “unpleasant” decision of calling the FLAT SIGN an accidental.
I have to clarify that if you would read the Description, you would notice that the second point of the five is called Key Signature.
The Descriptions are made for those willing to learn, the short itself, having the length of maximum 60 seconds, has to be intended as a simple hook.
I have to also clarify that in English, at least according to the sources from which I have learned the technical terms about 10 years ago, there is no generic name for Flats and Sharps, whereas in Italian, my native language, the mentioned elements are called in general “Alterazioni” that translated mota mot would sound “Alterations” but nobody would understand: therefore, I think that many teachers at the beginning use the expression “Accidentals” to help the beginner understand the element he is referring to, to then use just the proper technical and professional term.
Plus, to let everybody know something about me, English is not my native language as mentioned: at the age of 32 I didn’t know even how to say “hello” …
English is a language that I keep learning along the way, day by day, and today I can admit that I haven’t learned even one tenth of the whole English Dictionary…
      Good luck with your practice,
      Gianluca Fronda

@@PianoLessonstoGo so if I summarise your grossly contorted and superfluous self-justification, what you’re saying is basically:
      1. beginners simply can’t grasp the concept of key signatures, so they must be taught to call them accidentals first
      2. you were taught that way yourself by your teacher so it must be right
      3. It’s a short, not a proper video, so you are excused
      4. English is not you’re first language so you should be excused for calling key signatures accidentals…
Well, to me, none of the above seem like good enough excuses to use the wrong terminology on the Internet - you may end up confusing a lot of people.

@@CK-eq6fr Firstly, my reply is not grossly contorted and superfluous and you are rather rude addressing to me in this manner.
Secondly, can you kindly show me your contents, simply to applaude, to add thumbs up and to learn, from such a well educated, experienced and well spoken English Music expert, or maybe teacher.
I grew up with a simple and straight motto: “If you know how to do something, show it to me…”!
If you are looking for my apology, due to the fact I called the Key Signature Element an “Accidental”, I have no problems to …apologise!
Remember that the brain and mindset of an Italian is way different of the one of an English person and what you are calling contorted is actually far from being contorted: you are offending me directly in a public space, actually, on my CZcams Channel, a free platform, unless you decide to pay to watch the content.
If you don’t like my content, you are more than welcome to not only NEVER come back to my channel, additionally, I would appreciate if you completely block my content in order to not get confused by my inappropriate explanations.
Before replying to every single point, I want to clarify again that when I started the study of the Musical English Language the word Accidental has been automatically linked in my head to the Italian word Alterazioni.
      1. Before publishing that short, I made a couple of them, calling that Element exactly “Key Signature”, adding that it is a flat sign, previously known as Accidental, yet it was always exceeding the maximum length allowed. The one published ( unfortunately for you ) went through and I accepted it! Simple, never expecting that People with some experience would mind the expression and sure that in case of doubts and comments I would be happy to properly explain everything. Moreover, I published it acknowledging that in the Description all was clearly stated and explained.
      2. Nobody taught me anything: as already said ( but probably you didn’t consider it relevant ) I studied the Musical English terminology individually. As mentioned a couple of times I have studied everything in Italian, just in ITALIAN because I am ITALIAN myself. I think if you would have read carefully my reply, we wouldn’t waste time in this way. I’m afraid that what is superficial is your reply, not mine.
      3. Read the description and all will be clear!!! The quantity of rubbish on the internet is endless and you are accusing me of all the sins of the web!?! On top of all the above, I write poems even in the description of a Short …!!!
      4. Even though English is not my first language I have problems understanding the meaning of your sentence “English is not you’re first language…”!
      5. The fifth point is mine: I would appreciate if you would explain to a simple Italian musician how to call with a unique term Flats and Sharps, that in all the other languages have a simple term that simply embrace them: ALTERAZIONI!!!
I’d like to highlight that visits to my channel are not compulsory.
      Kind regards,
      Gianluca Fronda
