  • We had a kind of rough first day of school. Sadie is starting 7th grade, Maggie had her first day of 5th grade last week (and then has a week off), Patrick is starting 3rd grade, James is starting 1st grade, and Tessie is starting K-Club (young kindergarten, with a second year of kindergarten next year). When two hours passed without a phone call, I thought her day was probably going pretty well. Then I saw that while I was on the phone with Paul I'd gotten a voicemail...
Welcome to Autmazing! We talk a lot about autism around here because we are a family with five kids and a mom and dad who are autistic and we believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. We also post videos daily (or almost daily), about topics that we feel are important and sometimes there's a vlog thrown in too. We think it's important to see that being autistic is just that- another way of being human. You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the nearby city that Paul works in.
We are a family of 7, with a Mom named Cammie and a Dad named Paul. Sadie is 13, Maggie is 11, Patrick is 8, James is 6, and Tessie is now 5!

Thank you! I'll definitely keep that in mind for the near future. For me touch and sound (avoiding) are probably the biggest ones, which is definitely a challenge around here!

Since two adults tried to make Tessie sit, I think it's a real blessing that she was sent home and won't be returning. It doesn't sound like a good fit for a child who needs to move. Young kids, autistic, otherwise neurodivergent, or neurotypical, shouldn't be forced to sit. And it's a reasonable accommodation for neurodivergent children to be able to move around in order to self-regulate. I wonder what the school district's policy and practices of restraints are, given that they tried to force a young child to sit. I hope there's a way that parents can opt out of any form of restraint for their children.

My heart and spirits with you hun! You are my hero mum! You have two extra amazing ads kidlets than I do and I stil get flip flops in my tummy daily regarding school and all the differences we must cope with. My last asd kidlet is going to attempt streamline gr 9 high school in two weeks and I’m terrified! He’s been at home for 18 months and I’m so scared. You show me how you cope and even though my other kids are not little any more they will always be kids to me. ♥️

Thank you. ❤️ I hope your family has a good first week. It is really intimidating going back after so long being gone. And middle school and high school feel so much more stressful to me than elementary school, just because the social pressure seems so much higher!

I loved Maggie's "hi" in the beginning!
Maggie and Tessie switched places in the car. And Maggie pretending to be Tessie was really funny!
School was interesting here too but nobody went home early. I hope Tessie finds a good fit in school and the school year sails smoothly (though realistically I'm not sure it's ever totally smooth for anyone).

    A) I am very glad Tessie enjoyed her 1st day even if only for a couple of hours.
    B) I appreciate how fast the director got back to you about a different solution.
    C) Are Sadie, Patrick and James not on a bus route for their schools?
    D) I hope you had a moment of quiet time for yourself.
I await their stories of adventures.

Thanks a r. The three kids who go to our public schools don't take the bus because it gets to our house at 6:25 am and they have to ride for over an hour to get to school. And then it's the first stop on the way home, so if I was out getting the girls I wouldn't be home yet, which would be fine with Sadie, but I'm not super comfortable doing it with the boys for the length of time that it would be.
Thankfully it looks like the schedule should work out. I drop the kids off (and it only takes about three minutes to get them to school) then Maggie, then Tessie. We discovered that thankfully there's a half hour between each drop off, so it should work out.
I tried to get alternate bus solutions for Maggie and Tess, because I would love to have them transported and save a ton on gas, but the only option is the bus company that hurt Maggie, and so that's a hard pass for us.
And I'm so excited. Tomorrow I go see Tessie's potential school. I'm really hoping it's going to be a good fit! ❤️

@@Autmazing I totally get the 6:25 pick up is a no go. I used to educate. One school I taught at had a 45+ min. Bus drive. The littles had a super hard time with it. So their attendance was not always 100%. There was no options for satellite school on certain days as the area had no internet coverage.
Is it possible to get a gas allowance from the school board for Maggie and Tessie's transportation?

Sitting still does not seem to be Tessie’s forte. I hope she has a place that will let her move around more. She learns well when she moves. A different learning style, but serves Tessie, well. I hope the rest of your kids had a great 1st day.

My little boy learns better with motion too. Gets the vestibular input going! Horse therapy works well as does four wheeling . Anything the moves, sways, circles or bumps gets him going. I dread school. He just turned three and won’t start until next year. I am not comfortable with Covid and the fact he is a flight risk! I hope 🤞 you and Tessie have a better week!

Thank you both! ❤️ She definitely does get most of her thinking and learning done while she's moving. Lately she's been really into moving mattresses back and forth across her room and stacking them vertically and horizontally and in all sorts of different ways. I wish I had her energy!

That's so hard. I think Maggie's current school goes up through young adults (I can't remember the exact age) but she changed so much year to year I never know what the right fit will be in the future.

We haven't. There was a public Montessori school we applied too when Maggie was small, as a school of choice, but most private schools don't have the resources for kids with higher levels of needs like Maggie and Tessie.

Which kid? Tessie was home because she was sent home from school on her first day so that we could find a better school. And my older daughter Maggie was home because her school had a one day week last week and then a week off, and starts again tomorrow.
Everyone is going to school this year. I'm just hoping they stay open.

It is a practical matter. They don't have the staff. Look at the reaction of her mother. She gets it.

    • @Autmazing
      @Autmazing  Před 3 lety +1

It's hard because in the perfect world, it would work. But realistically I get it. The school doesn't have the funding to have the number of people that Tessie (or Maggie) would need on a day to day basis. I think the part that is the most frustrating to me is that funding is poured into ABA programs here (if she was going to a therapy center the state would be willing to pay a quarter of a million dollars a year as part of their autism program), but the schools themselves seem to receive a lot less.
