I have Asperger's and I wish there was a school or after school program like this where I grew up, in Upstate New York (just outside of Rochester, NY to be more exact). I think that would have helped me to learn not to police other people's behavior except for if I'm supposed to be watching after them. Although, I think I learned that from my parents and teachers from earlier years. My parents would correct, lecture, or reprimand me even for small things (but they usually wouldn't correct people who weren't their kids). It took me a very long time to figure out that not everyone has the same sense of right and wrong as I do, and that some parents might turn the other cheek on their kids' behavior unless it looks like it might hurt someone or something.
I know this may sound a little random, but I have a brother who is 2 years younger than me, and doesn't have any disabilities (I'm the older child in a family with only 2 children, not including cousins). I don't remember him ever policing his peers or teachers. He always seemed like he turned the other cheek unless it looked like it might hurt someone or something.

Hi, I'm 23 years old (24 at the end of June), and have an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis (it used to be called Asperger Syndrome). I am thinking about possibly starting a school, or alternative education program for school age children (pre-K or Kindergarten through high school) who happen to be on the Autism Spectrum. I'm thinking of including children all over the spectrum. From those who have little to no difficulty communicating verbally, and would otherwise be able to function ok in a regular classroom (but struggle with social skills), to those who have significant difficulty with communication, and would find it very difficult to function in a regular classroom. What do I need to do or have in order to start a special school or alternative program? What do I need to know (other than the percentage of children in the area who are on the Autism Spectrum, the number of schools or special programs in the area that are geared toward children on the Autism Spectrum, and the average household income in the area)?

There are 2 schools like that in the city I live. One is preschool through 3 years of grade 12 for students with either autism or difficulties related to autism. And the other is Grade 1-12(1 year) only for autistic students.

Does ABA discrete therapy work though ? I know from my experience raising an autistic child that it didnt work and we ended up using highly play based therapy techniques and child led approaches instead.
