  • An indepth discussion of the 2020 International Booker Prize Winner- The Discomfort of Evening by Marieke Lucas Rijneveld. Join myself and special guest Isabel to discuss some things we found particularly interesting in this book, from the metaphorical nature of Rijneveld's work to sexualization of farm animals, and the discomfort of the novel overall. This video contains spoilers for The Discomfort of Evening. It also has a lot of TW, like suicide, death, intrusive sexual acts, incest, self harm, honestly even a full list may not suffice, because this book was seriously dark, so if you're in an unstable mental health state of mind, I would advice you to not read it.
I'm so happy to have had Isabel on my channel, and I joined her for a chat about The Colour Purple a little while ago, check out the video here:

I had a good read throughout because of the way it's written we're witnessing it from a pov of a 10 y/o, so rather than dark, I found it more whimsical and sad. I too had a point where I did not know what to feel. (Those Hitler jokes made me laugh tho).
I completed the novel minutes ago and I was/ am in shock because I never saw this to end the way it did. And although the book says "In discomfort, we are real." I really need a closure!!!
Anyhoo It's good to find someone talk about it, so thank you!

Thanks for sharing your reading experience with us! Wish there was more closure too, but perhaps it’s part of the charm? If you can call this ‘charming’ haha oof

just finished the book, and well, i dont know if it is good, or bad. it seems really deep, with all the symbolisms, and the unraveling of a family, their descend to the darkness is really heartbreaking.
On the other hand, the animal violence , i just didnt understand what was the point of it, it felt like shock value. I found the lack of consequences of some events really dumb, like as said in the video the AI gun, nothing happens? Anyway, great video, it is always nice to hear a discussion of a book like this.

I've read it in the original Dutch. As a novel it is not carefully constructed. Lots of loose ends (e.g. the AI gun). The whole time the narrator uses metaphors and language which are not credible for a 12-year old farmer girl. Believe me, there are better Dutch-language authors than Rijneveld...
