    I’ve always had a good looking yard. I always just threw down high nitrogen ferts and my grass looked lush all the time. When those ferts wore off though…. the grass thinned out and died. This year I took soil samples and am trying to rectify my soil by watching these vids. My soil had a high PH of 8.9 so I put down elemental sulphur and citric acid 3 weeks ago. My nitrogen was also extremely low so I threw down a high nitrogen quick release fert as well as an organic slow release fert equal to Milorganite (a Canadian equivalent). 3 days ago I put on a heavy dose of Andersons Humic and then we got rain. That humic is what really helped green up my lawn. It also seemed to equalize the growth rate of the lawn. It seems to all be growing at the same rate now… which it never did before. My phosphorus was also very low…. so I added a high phosphorus fert 0-45-0. I am anxious to see how the yard handles through our snowy winter and take another soil sample next spring to compare results.

    • @beri232
      @beri232 Před 2 měsíci

      That limestone would make your soil more alkaline. My soils PH is at 8.9 so I’m trying to bring it down and make it more acidic. I’d like a 6.5 PH but at this point, I’d be happy with a neutral 7. I threw down elemental sulphur and citric acid about 3 weeks ago. I’ll do this again in the fall and do another soil test next year to see if it worked. My water here is alkaline so it messes with my yard.

      Get a soil sample done. That’s what I did. Now I’m trying to correct the soil itself instead of just throwing high nitrogen ferts at it. Those ferts work but it’s temporary and if you stop using them, your lawn will go to hell like mine did. So far the soil rehab is working and the humic acid is extremely good! I used Andersons Humic. It is granular and not as messy as liquid forms.

      The Andersons Humic DG is a great product. Unfortunately there are no dealers up here that carry it I am aware of and shipping was nearly $40 a bag. I have a lot to treat so it ended up being more cost effective for the SG version for me. Now that I have it I really like that can keep a lot on hand without much space. Thought that sprayer was nice. Bought it. Every hose was not tight. Leaks everywhere. Even the swich for the hand sprayer valve screw was loose and leaking at the switch spraying at me. Not one hose was tight. They used plastic clamps everywhere. Replacing with metal clamps. They use a led acid battery which means you should not run the battery more that 50% (I've even heard no less than 80%) as lead ones are not made to do that depleted. No charge level inicator to help with that (will have to install one) Charging system needs to be wired so you are not wearing out the on/off switch cable/port by un plugging it to charge with the same connector you have to have plugged in to torn it on/off via switch.They put the on/off sticker upside down for the power switch, so off is on and on is off. I will need to wire a better charge port in. After the led battery dies i will replace/build a lithium pack. Prob just use a drill battery to make it simple to charge and go. I cant say its worth 800 bucks. 2k on Amazon direct from the vendor. Physical aspects built well with exception of the hose clamps. Electrical needs work. I'll 3d print a battery mount/plug an be in business. Prob get an extra 1/3 runtime with a 9ah battery pack, plus stronger pump action with a better/consist power source and easy to keep going with an easy battery swap. Its needs a few revisions in my opinion. Hope that helps whoever is interested in the sprayer.

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před 5 lety +1

      That's disappointing to hear I had a couple of loose clamps myself. I also added an extra strainer outside the machine so if there is a clog I don't need to deal with it inside the sprayer. It's very good but not perfect I wish Turfex would see that some improvements could make this thing perfect but the simplicity of it will likely make it a little easier in the long run to maintain I hope for both of us.

    Great videos. I was wondering if you know of a granular starter fertilizer I could use this Fall when I overseed, that has humic acid as well as micro-nutrients in it? I have looked everywhere, including Anderson's, but haven't found anything on their website and the customer service on the phone kept leading me to dead ends. Thanks!

    Hi. For everyone asking about the difference between liquid app and granular. Cost is the main reason we use liquid concentrate. And like he said I only have so much storage space. So when I am treating 800 acres in a week do I really want to haul a 50 lbs bag for every ten this And square feet or just a 2.5 gallon concentrate?

    • @TheDylan6908
      @TheDylan6908 Před rokem

      Liquid concentrate or water solubles are cheaper in one way and very expensive in another. If you calculate price per pound of actual humic acid in the bag or in the bottle, granular blows the others out of the water. Humic 12 is $34/ 1 lb H. If you dissolve Humic DG in water it comes to $2.70/lb of H

      Humic acid is for the soil and not absorbed through the leaves so you can water it in immediately. There are also newer products that let you apply humic acic in granualr form which eliminates the need for a sprayer. My favorite granular version of humic acid is here: amzn.to/2WjFPOK

      Good thank you. You can check out my latest video that includes humid acid that may be helpful: czcams.com/video/-tsfC4FkNoQ/video.html In the meantime though if you already have powdered product I would put it in a container like I do in this video and stir it and let it sit for a while until it's totally dissolved then you should be able to spray it again. Humid acid does have tendency to clog for some brands. I hope this helps.

    What’s the difference between using that and peat moss? Other than the obvious liquid vs particle thing. Aren’t they both similar pre-coal substances?

    • @SilverCymbal
      @SilverCymbal  Před 5 lety

      Great question, peat moss is not nearly as decomposed as the elements in humic acid which is much more than just a single element, it is a collection of things that make it up. The other interesting this is that Humic acids are not fully understood as to why they do what they do. Parts of it are but there are still many questions about it. What we do know is that it does work and benefits the lawn by enhancing soil structure and making other additives more available. Peat adds organics to the soil and is beneficial but not in the same way as Humic acid. I hope that was helpful and thank you for watching.

    • @BenNawrath
      @BenNawrath Před 5 lety

      Thanks for the reply. It'll be interesting to see the research develop. I re-did a section of my lawn this fall, so I'm trying to absorb some basics. I'm an engineer so I geek out on the technical stuff, but I also have a 4 yr old so I have no time haha. So easy things to make my questionable, flat and compacted Long Island soil better are always good.

    Minimal to zero benefits to humic acid in turf. Nutrients are more available or less available depending on your ph, I’ve never seen any proof that humic acid affects nutrient uptake. Humic is not worth the $ period. If you want to spend your money on this more power to you but it is not worth it for me and it really shouldn’t be for most people, especially people on a budget.
