I'm a Brazilian guy...I played soccer junior leagues as a teen, up till I was 16, than I got into jiu jitsu and mma..today I am 31 and I saw a guy playing a game called MLB 24 ROAD TO THE SHOW...than I went and started seeing some real life highlights of real games. Now I just wanna learn this damn game IRL. Goddamit, I would trade my BJJ purple belt for the chance to have known this sport at an early age...

I played ball in highschool, and I loved everything about the game. I played catcher and caught every game for my highschool team except for a single inning where I was moved to right field against a team that kept hitting fly doubles into right field that would get dropped by our younger outfielders, and I caught 3 hitters in a row to save us from complete humiliation in a 10-2 game.
I wanted to play pro ball. I wanted to catch in the big game. I loved the teamwork between myself and the pitcher. I loved defending home plate and tagging runners. I loved the deception and trickery of the setup and the catch. And I was pretty good at it.
Only one problem. I couldn't hit a ball to save my life. As a catcher I could follow that ball and snag it right in the pocket of my glove 99% of the time, but put a bat in my hand and I couldn't see the ball, where it was going, I couldn't tell when to swing, and I struck out 80% of my at-bats. The rest were either walks or lucky ground singles to left field.
My point is, yeah man, you're spot on. Hitting a round ball with a round bat is one of the hardest things to do in sports. But I will forever love the game. It has everything. Luck, skill, strategy, tactics, drama, feuds and complete unpredictability. Baseball is the greatest.

Covering baseball rules in one video is quite a challenge since the number of rules in the book is daunting. This applies to softball as well. Although this video begins to dip into the weeds of detail at times, it is still a good overview. As a high school softball coach, it is amazing how many talented kids enter our program with weak knowledge and misconception of even the most basic rules. The same is apparently true on the baseball side. This is because parents and youth coaches have themselves learned the rules not by actually reading them, but rather by hearsay, word of mouth, and listening to uninformed sportscasters. Myths and lack of knowledge about even basic rules persist. Examples: Conflating obstruction and interference (one pertains to defense and the other to offense); Thinking that two runners on a base is an automatic out; Not knowing the difference between dead ball and delayed dead ball; Confusing baseline and base path; The difference between player interference and retired player interference; Purpose and use of the running lane; (the list goes on). Diving to specific rules in separate dedicated videos would be an excellent service to both baseball and softball. In doing so, it would be very valuable to craft rules discussions not in terms of MLB rules, but rather rules that are in place for the younger levels. After all, it is highly unlikely that major league players would be using this forum to learn rules. Kids (and parents/coaches) at the younger levels, on the other hand, would. Kids learning the game need to know the rules that pertain to them. A good example... sliding to "break up" a double play in MLB is ok. Doing the same thing at younger levels can get a player ejected. Video discussions of rules are great as long as they are accurate, seek to dispel myths, and are aimed at the audience that is actually at the stage of learning basics. Thanks for making this video!

That’s kinda like saying, I’ve decided to transition from playing golf to racing cars……..there’s not a whole lot of carry over skills other than basic hand-eye coordination and your ability to run fast for very short periods of time

Thank you for making and sharing this video! I'm a lifelong NFL fan and never understood a single bit about baseball. I love the vibe at baseball stadiums (if that makes sense) and hearing it on TV, so I'm excited to learn about it so I actually know what's going on. It's definitely going to take lots of rewinding and rewatching, lol

thank you for the video one thing I didn't understand was the fair vs foul balls section at 2:33 and now I understood that by watching the video but I wanted to ask why if you are 0-2 as a batter you get unlimited fouls why doesn't that count as a strike after your 2nd

I'm hooked to baseball thanks to Moneyball movie, but as we all know, the best way to experience baseball is to go to the stadium. When you watched it on TV, I noticed that you'll missed a lot of the whole play. And as a Malaysian, baseball is one of the minority sport.

I was reading "watching baseball smarter - zack hample", and sometimes I read the same section for 10 times to be able to understand it. all these things you mentioned in this video are pretty basic, but again it helped me to solidify what I already know, and gave me a more clear understanding about the basics of the game. even tho I know all of them. very good explanations, thanks a lot!

Hi,
A few questions about the actions of a catcher.
(1) after a fair hit the ball goes into the outfield. Can the catcher remove his protective mask and place it on the third base line?
The runners are rounding bases as the ball is thrown back in to the catcher.
(2) The ball is thrown wide and hits the catchers’ face mask (he placed on 3rd base line earlier) which stops it from travelling further behind his position at home plate. Is this a form of interference?
The catcher then picks up the ball and tags the runner coming home from 3rd.
(3) is the runner out?
(4) should the umpire call “time” when the ball hit the catchers mask on the 3rd base line and declare the ball ded? (sorry for bad spelling lol)
18:25 As the story goes, Wee Willie Keeler used to bunt a ton of balls foul until he found a pitch he liked. MLB changed the rule in 1895 to the current one to combat this type of strategy. I can't find much truth to this story, but it does fit in the timeline of when he played (1892 - 1910). So, it's possible.

runners can tag up on any fly ball - fair or foul. I didnt go into tagging up in this video, but the answer is yes.
Hi! Great video. I was wondering what the point of the catcher is. Does anything happen if the catcher doesn’t catch a pitch? And do they do anything other than just catch it and throw it back to the pitcher?
yes lots of things happen, but that was a little too specific for this video. Catcher needs to catch it - helps "frame" the ball for the umpire which helps get pitches called as strikes, and must catch or keep the ball in front of him with runners on base - they can advance all they want, so if he doesnt catch it they can run amok

Maybe, I may just not understand the lingo properly.
A runner is only required to run if they are in a force situation. A force situation only happens when the batter hits the ball on the ground and the runner is either (a) on first base or (b) on second or third base and all of the bases behind him are occupied.
Force outs can only be recorded against runners in a force situation. The batter is always under a force situation if he hits a fair ground ball.

Search for "world series" and see what comes up - but just be careful to not call baseball games "matches" - we never use that term. MLB.com also has an archive of free games to watch.

@@DanBlewett Oh, it is, I'm sure, but the limited access to broadcasts outside the US and the MLB's decision for even old games not be available online makes it inaccessible, I am sure with the wealth of information you've provided anyone would pick it up after watching a game or two.

What Organization did you play for? I pitched in the Pirates,Braves, Brewers and Rangers Organizations from 1990 to 1995.went to big league Spring Training in 1993 and 1994
Google it. Baseball stats come up. He played from 2010 to 2016 but not in the majors or minors. Looks to be independent leagues.
In the scenario in which there are 2 out and a runner on base and the 3rd out occurs after the player on base crosses home plate, why doesn't the run count if it occurs before the out? Hope that's clear.

What's the rule regarding a fly Ball to the outfield and the 1st base runner sets off thinking the out field won't catch it ?can he keep going or does he have to wait until the ball is caught or dropped, if he goes past 2nd base and the ball is caught can he go back and tag 2nd base or does he have to go all the way back to 1st

My 86-year-old mother has been asking me questions about the rules of baseball my entire life. She will never understand it. I don't think the rules are complex at all, but that's me.
My question is when you have for example a Runner on First Base and a batter WHO batts the ball to a fly out , at the Moment the ball is caught the Runner on first has to Tag Up I know that , but let's assume the Runner on First base didn't Tag Up because he tried to steal a Base is it necessary when he runs to his starting Base again to Tag him Out or is this a force out Situation that the First baseman has Just to step on First Base with ball in His Glove?
Second question is let's assume you have two runners ,one on first and Second on Second Base and a batter , the batter bats to a fly out and the Second Base Runner Tries to steal a Base to third base .the Second Base Runner didn't Tag Up ,he runs Back to Second Base but the Runner on First Base tagged Up so i guess the Runner on First is automatically Out since you can't have two runners on one Base ( the Second base in this Case) but the Runner on Second Base has then to be Just forced Out when he didn't make IT in time to Second Base again or has then to be tagged Out? I know you can Always Tag Out but is it necessary in this Case ?

Not sure if this is really unusual, but when I played baseball, we actually did play with a time limit. I think we usually played 5 or 6 innings, but whichever inning had started when the time was up would be the last inning, even if it was a tie.
Not normal except in tournaments.
@@DanBlewett Fair enough. This was just a league where we'd play one game every week for half the year. I think they did 7-inning games in the play-offs, and probably a 9-inning game for the final. Idk, we didn't make it that far.
youth baseball is played in a tournament format a lot of the time here, and it ruins baseball. I get the need for time limits when field usage has to be tightly scheduled, but youth baseball is a joke in the US right now - just a side note. Baseball is best without time limits.
Hi! I’ve been trying to get into baseball but I come from a soccer background… A soccer match lasts (on average) 90 minutes, split into two halves of 45 minutes each.
When you so naturally say “playing the top half of an inning and bottom half of an inning, I have no idea what you are talking about. 😂 but, with all my heart, I really want to understand it.

How are pitchers and hitters including umpires able to eyeball the strike zone because the square is something that producers probably add during the game so I'm assuming that box doesn't exist while you're playing in the field. You did mention it somewhat earlier.

Pretty good. Didn’t cover foul tips into catcher’s glove as third strike, or dropped third strikes. Would also have liked to have seen a very brief overview of the jobs of various positions, also showing cutoffs and relays, etc.
Let me add that it’s difficult when you have brand new players show up to 14 or 16U to play ball for the first time. There’s no time to explain everything to them at that level, so finding videos that give a good overview is a must. I will send this one out to my newbs 😀
yeah, i intentionally didnt cover every single thing or this video would have been an hour long. You don't need to know dropped third strikes or foul tips if you're watching your first few baseball games. those details will fill in as you actually watch the game
@Coach Dan Blewett Agree. A good understanding of the basic rules is the essential foundation from which to build. Understanding the marerial here will allow someone to follow a game. Watching with that basic understanding together with a knowledgeable fan will allow the beginner to pick up the more complex rules and finer points of the game. For instance, it's great to know that a team (in MLB, at least) loses the DH for the game when putting that player in the field, but is that really necessary for the beginner? Even casual fans aren't aware of that rule.

You are a runner on first base and your teammate is up to bat. If he hits a ball it depends on if that ball is caught in the air by a fielder or not. Whenever a ball is caught in the air, all runners have to return to the base where they started the play. Sometimes a ball is so obviously going to be caught that the runner doesn’t even make an attempt at the next base. Sometimes a ball will so obviously not be caught that the runner on first base starts sprinting and tries to advance multiple bases on one hit. Oftentimes a ball will be hit deep to the outfield wall where a fielder catches it, but is now so far away the runner has time to return to the base where they started the play, and then try for the next base anyway. This is the tagging up concept. You only need to return to your previous base on a caught fly ball for a single instant to satisfy the rules. Then you are free to test your speed against the fielders arm.
