Hey there, David! We just wanted to drop in and say thanks for the shout-out and this great review! Everyone here at the shop is way into the X100VI and can't get enough of the film sims. We all collectively winced at the clip of your elbow hitting the table at the end. Ooof! Thanks again!!
You guys rock! Next time I'm in town out there, I would love to stop by and check out the shop and meet the team in person. Everyone I've talked to on your team has been amazing and you'll for sure be my go to gear shop now!
We would so love to have you visit! Maybe when you visit, we could plan something like a David Manning Fujifilm Photowalk in Columbus??? Just sayin!
Can confirm Midwest is great - my local store, and they probably see too much of me. I also got my X100VI from them.
Nice! Placed an order because of this recommendation 👏🏻
After editing hundreds of thousands of photos for work, being able to pull out my x100v snap a photo and immediately have a finished product is such a breath of fresh air!
So cool to see the love for MPEX! Excellent video David!
Super stoked I found them! Really good group of people over there!
I love the quality of pictures 👌👌👌 , well done 👍
Hey David, long time no talk, hope all is well!! I, too, have been in awe of the hype around this camera, and it honestly has really intrigued me. Part of me is like, well I don't need any more cameras. But I honestly LOVE the idea of the simplicity and the form factor of it. The fact that it can just fit in a coat/hoodie pocket is awesome. I kind of like how it is a fixed lens. Whenever I go on a trip I get so fixated on what lenses to bring "oh but what if I want my 70-200, oh but maybe I should have my 35 prime just in case, but then what if I want to zoom, so I should bring my 24-70."
So the thought of this being simple and a fixed lens as just a fun "night out/weekend trip" no thoughts camera is awesome. I've really wanted something like this for a while, looked at the sony a7c, but I feel like I would still just grab my a1 at that point, so to have an out of my normal system camera with a fixed lens to just grab and go with friends and do a fun photo walk seems awesome...hmmm.... *insert spongebob I don't need it gif* Maybe a birthday gift for myself, haha.
Also what's the bag you used in the beginning?
Clare, you're reading my mind with this! That's exactly how I've felt for so many years going on trips. Having the struggle of what gear to pack, ending up not using much of it, but then still packing all of it for the next trip. It was oddly freeing to have the limitation of just one camera with one lens.
Spongebob would buy it🤣
Just bought one. Excited to get it!
Great video, thank you! Ordered in a small local shop here in Germany. I hope I will be next! 😀
I really want to try out this camera, I think it's just what I'm looking for. Great review, and thanks of sharing.
Great sample images. Thanks for sharing. Daniel
FWIW: You're describing a RESTO-MOD when using your Mustang analogy! Which is a great way to describe this camera, from its retro styling, updated internals, and improvements that make it better for modern daily driving, the phrase is well picked for this camera!
Exactly! I'm thinking 69 mustang with 24 Lexus guts🤣
@@DavidManningvlog mid-west + resto-mods... I hope there's a travel video and some film camera somewhere in there next time you're in the motherland 😂😂
Very interesting camera indeed. Great video as always!
Love your review, excellent job. Question, does yours make a decent amount of noise when using AF-C? Mine like clicks when focusing back and forth...
I just got back from a spring break trip to Disneyworld with my family and took all my pics with the x100vI. It was so easy to carry all day long and the built in flash was fantastic. We also went to a spring training baseball game and I wasn’t sure what the policy on cameras was and my wife grabbed the x100vI and tossed it into her small purse and voila!
I did use the crop/zoom feature on the camera and was happy with the results. Still got nice 20mp pics at 50mm.
I had been on a 2 year hunt for an x100v and getting the x100vI was worth the wait.
stunning photos
Would you make a video comparing the x100vi to the a7cii? Ive heard comparisons of the two, but no visual comparisons. Appreciate your input and reviews!
That would be a very solid comparison video! Pricing along makes the comparison a bit tough being that the Sony body alone is $2,200 but as a practical matter of which camera to choose, it would be a great comparison!
2:00 Do you mind sharing what sling bag you are using?
I agree with you. I mainly shoot Canon Pro DSLR and MF film. I got the X100VI for light travel and city trips. I will supplement this with my EOSM5 and it’s great 11-22 zoom and pretty useful 55 to 200mm for major trips. It’s all about the weight and convenience as well as low profile. Got mine in black, less ‘cool’ but less ‘visible’. It’s a tool not jewellery.
Like you, I am way more interested and intrigued by this camera than I wanted to be. I will be curious to see your follow-up video to know how you have yours setup for regular use.
Stay tuned! After the fairly long dial in period, I've simplified my use case on this thing massively. It's so easy now I barely have to think about it!
Same I’ll definitely watch that!!
@@DavidManningvlog I can't wait!
Great video. Is your clever supply strap the short 27in or medium 37.5 version?
I went for the medium version. The short strap is great if you'll only ever wear it in front, but sometimes I wear my strap cross body and the medium is better for that👍
Wait, I just looked and this one is the 40" skinny strap version!
The examples shown from your sony here looks amazing in terms of color though, I’ve been looking for a fuji film sim to look like that.
What about the A7C2 or A7CR (if budget permits) and one of those G compact primes? - basically as pocketable but none of the drawbacks.
My iPhone Preorder skills nabbed me one from BH on launch day. It replaced my Ricoh GR III as my EDC camera, I'm super happy with mine too. It really is annoyingly good.
Hahhaa! Annoyingly good is the perfect description!
@gearandghz any tips I am on the waiting list Moment site 1,200 back 😢
GRiii is a great cam too! Just wished it was 35mm instead 28mm.
Do you prefer the x100 photos way more? Or a bit more?
@@ntchi Well, I do like the photos more but that's all personal preference, and my other camera is a fuji, so it's probably not fair.
The objective things I like more about the X100 is the 35mm focal length, viewfinder, and way better battery life.
Love the tones. ta daa
That's great video, plan a trip and come to wuhan maybe we can link up. thanks
how did you colour grade this video?
That’s actually how I got my x100v so quickly. Only 2 months because I went to a small camera store here in Cincinnati 😅
Hey ohhhh Cincinnati!!! 🙌
great review, just wanted to counter-suggest that people at least try out fuji's teleconverter cuz its fun to use. sure you can punch in later, but you'd be defeating that appealing part of this camera where you don't have to do post. i still do large prints taken from a 10 mp camera, comes out great.
What made you go with the vi instead of say a a7c ii?
Been stuck on both, mainly bc full frame just has a better image to me
Yea I think the a7iii images he put up were way better than the Fuji pictures he’s showing
I really like the way to have a "ligtroom finished" jpeg out of this cam with the film receipes.
Reala ace is still a film simulation IIRC, its based on the Fuji Superia Reala 100 film which was discontinued in 2013.
Oh dude, you rock thank you! Looking into it, I thought that one was based on their modern digital camera color science. Thanks for the correction👍
@@DavidManningvlog wouldn't surprise me if it was reala in name only! But there was a filmstock called that 😂
I think they consider the Provia setting as the standard "digital camera" jpeg setting
Hi Dave, always loved Fuji even though I am a Sony fanboy 😁
Apparently me too now!🤣
My tip
Wrist strap ...frees up your hands ...and your likely to.sjoot interesting angles ...I own an XT5 and while I won't be buying this camera I would say it would be an awesome camera to own
How will you clean an internal ND-filter, from both sides, in a body with interchangeable lenses? That is, imho, something for a closed system.
Sony FX6 has a 2-7 stop ND filter built in and interchangeable lenses, so they for sure can do it. Just at what cost I guess
Have a Sony A7IV and also have this on preorder. I’m tempted to cancel the preorder and get the xt5 instead. I’m just worried that the size then is getting closer to the Sony. I want a small everyday camera. Not something I have to lug around with a bag and all.
Keep the pre-order on this. You'll be surprised at how freeing the limitation of one lens is!
I think I'd still lean towards my A7CR + 35mm 2.8 Sony/Zeiss Sonnar. I like to shoot RAW and later on decide which direction the photo should go in. Great Video though.
Preordered on the 21st from a small store and I’m hoping I see it this year 😂
Might be a solid idea to place a pre-order at a few places to see which one dings first! Usually you're not charged until it's ready to ship, so once one does you can then cancel the other pre-orders👍
@@DavidManningvlog having the time makes me enjoy the videos that come out more. I did find out that the 2nd US release was 20% of the size of the first and stores are still dealing with day one orders. Ha
I want to buy a EDC compact camera, how would you rate this compared to a Sony a7cii with the 40mm f2.5.?
My main camera is the LUMIX S5II, and I love it. But looking sor something I would want to have on me everyday on a strap or 3L sling bag.
Man, it's so tricky because the A7Cii is so damn good and obviously opens the door up to a whole world of lens options. I think sometimes though, those options actually get in the way of just picking up your camera and creating photos. For me, the simplicity and limitations of this camera are what remove obstacles and let me just create. If you have other cameras for other things are just want a super fun EDC camera, then this is absolutely the way to go!
A7CII with small lens like Sony 24,40,50 f2.5 G or Sigma 24, 35, 65 f/2 or Samyang 24,35mm f/2.8 = INSANE COMPACT COMBO. X100 series are overhyped.
You could sorta split the difference, get something like the Fuji XT-5, its got a more old school styling, and has all the features of that x100VI, but you'd get the flexibility of having swappable lenses like the a7CII. get something like their 23mm F2.8 WR and you'd have a fun EDC camera that you could slap something like the Sigma 18-50 on for more professional situations. Was just a thought!
Midwest people are nice 😊. Cool camera.
Midwest people are the best🙌
Does your VI have warm issue while taking pics?
I have my red set to -2 and blue set to -4 to get the proper white balance that I prefer. You can do the same by going to Auto White balance and hitting RIGHT to enter into the custom. Your camera will then do an Auto reading, but then add in your preferred push👍
People have mentioned and its reported that if you make minor adjustments to the film simulations..that it is recommend to leave the Clarity to 0..because if you don't.. you will get a major lag in the processing after you take a shot..unless its no bother to some..but hopefully this will be looked at by Fuji and have a firmware update to fix this subtle quirky issue..lol
How is the autofocus? Is it fast and accurate enough for pics of uncooperative kids?
Would love to know what camera bag you are using in this video…..looks like a Messinger bag
I'll hit on all the gear in my next video👍
The Fuji X-S20 is also a good option. Smaller than the X-T5, yet can use different lenses. I have the X-S10 and 27mm f/2.8... a poor man's X100.
Couldn't agree more. Especially for the bigger battery and faster uhs 2 card slot.
X-E4 would be a better substitute in that case imo, except that it doesn't have ibis.
5:17 Not necessarily! 😅 I bet SOME think that but a lot of us love them. I have been shooting film since I was a child (30+ years), and in a more artistically conscious way since probably the late 90s and love the Fujis and the film sims.
It will never be perfect or exact but its the best next thing, and the Classic Negative Sim can get eerily close to the 1000s of frames of budget Superia I would shoot daily for fun during the early 00's.
Hi David
Do you think you can shoot a whole wedding with this camera?
As a commercial and professional photographer..you can but thats quite risky per say..that 1 UHS1 card slot in my own personal opinion is a no go for a wedding from my personal perspective...for client work I would be more comfortable with 2 card slots for redundancy/backup..a professor used to tell us that "always remember as a photographer you only have those one chance moments and occasions"..and a wedding defiantly falls under that category for sure lol worst nightmare for us photographers is doing client work and a card gets corrupted!..lol and imagine that happening to camera that has 1 card slot..lol but if you meant as a guest and its not "work" then this would obviously be great to have and shoot for personal photos..lol
It’s almost inevitable CZcamsrs get into fuji at some point. Nice shots.
Hahaha! Makes sense!
great picture
Not sure why many reviewers state that other cameras are as good as the X100Vl at the same price or less, then go on to list cameras that are 'body only' prices and are therefore much bigger and way more expensive.
Looks like a nice day at Makena (Big) Beach
I agree that X100V is smaller than your Sony A7IV setup but what about an A6700 with a fixed 23mm or short zoom? There's soo much hype around this camera, you can easily make so many cameras "simple" just by limiting the set-up.
The a6700 is a killer camera and I think a solid alternative to something like this. The whole small Sony body lineup really! I think some of the fun is in the size and a lot of the fun is in the built in presets. I'm surprised that Sony hasn't implemented something like that for their more prosumer cameras. Even more shocking is that Sony hasn't kept their RX1 lineup going!
@@DavidManningvlog Agreed. Though I think all the manufacturers have taken notice of the preorder madness. Anticipate we'll start to see 'me-too' offerings from a several of them.
200 on a list? Damn, I thought it was bad here, because there are 17 people waiting for the x100vi in the shop where I ordered it…
Haha! I mean, no idea where you would actually be on their list, but going through smaller shops always ensures that you get it first and mpex.com are awesome for that!
Super cute family for modelling…..
Fujifilm colours out of the camera need minimal IF any post-processing. They're that good
Not spending hours in post-processing is absolutely my favorite part!
I don’t care about your review.. i just loved ur kids pic ❤
Thoughts on video features?
Hahhaa haven't hit the record button once!
@@DavidManningvlog I would love to see some sample video! Also for some reason no one includes the audio tests for it either! Just a thought, great videos keep up the good stuff
Sigh, I was hoping you would hate it 😜. The camera I didn’t know I needed.
I myself is getting weary of post processing and my right and left brain is really debating hard if I should get one. My liver is screaming don’t sell me. 😊
Who needs a liver anyway?!
Could you please get black models (brown skin) so we can see if the cameras would look good on us.
check out John Branch IV photography. He is a fuji wedding photographer. His photos may inspire you.
@@jg_jgjgseconding this!
I have been to MPEX's store...very cool. They recently moved...fyi.
SOLD!
You're going to be very stoked!
😊
Wow! It's interesting to see how camera manufacturers stole a few pages from the smartphones book.
Make a camera that creates "Ready-to-Post" photos. While beating the smartphones at physics, with real bokeh on a bigger physical sensor.
Very very clever 👏
Now let's see how Ricoh and Lumix will answer. GRiv? LX100iii?
Just pre-ordered 😂
You're going to be very very stoked!
Which model/length leather strap is that? Your link just brings me to the main page. Thanks!
It's the original slim, but wotoncraft has better texture IMO
Holy smokes David, those 3 photos you show of the sony 35 1.4 are so dope, better than all the Fuji ones. Biased opinion but what I felt.
It's hard to beat that Sony setup! Also, the A7IV is a full frame sensor, so better low light and less depth of field at similar apertures. BUT, if I don't have it with me because it's too big, then it's not the best camera for the moment🤷♂️
Yep. My heart sank when he posted the Sony pics. Noticeably better than the x100. Grrr.
now Mpex will have a 2000 people waiting list lol. But support good people!
Hahhaa! They're a great camera shop and like you said, just good people!
"Retro-mod" 👍
Now try a Leica Q3...
I need to get my hands on one! Those things are even harder to get right now!
VI sounds better than "6".
Like, saying Vee eye?
I still don't get the hype. The Sony ZV-E1 and a Sony G 24mm is pretty much similar in size and full frame, with the video capabilities of the Sony A7SIII plus some A.I. I get that is has Instagram filters built in, which we can also select in a split second via Adobe Lightroom. I'm really struggling to see what the hype is about...
I'll say that before shooting this thing, I had the exact same sentiment. I wasn't impressed by the specs, I wasn't impressed by the aps-c sensor. But having the limitation of a 35mm built into the camera, having it be this small, being able to play with those filters in camera... I don't know how to explain it but just to say, get your hands on one and shoot it for a week or two. Just have fun taking pictures and something will click! Taking away all of the options and features that the ZV-E1 has, somehow frees you up to just point and create
@@DavidManningvlog I know the feeling. I used to be a photographer before I was a cinematographer, and sometimes, I just want to shoot a roll of film to completely relax my brain and think in a different manner. I am not an aps-c fan, I'm not the kind of guy who wears nice shoes and a scarf (unless I'm at a wedding), so the fashion part of this camera doesn't interest me, or at least I think it doesn't. The filters, I shot Fuji 35mm stock for years, so okay, that floats my boat. I did buy one this morning, in black (about as fashion as I get) and will as you say try it out for a week or two. I either love it, or I make 50% extra on it, selling it off to some sucker. If you're at NAB, I'll let you know!
watch other reviews before buying this camera. it is a camera that you really do not need as a professional photographer or as a beginner. This camera i would use it more as a hobby. The specs are not really useful. I can tell this guy it's an advertiser (commission seller). Anyone profiting from a review, never trust their reviews.
Why did you want to hate it? :)
Cause prats like it.
John Wayne Gacy was from the midwest. Just sayin'.
But he was born in Chicago, sooooooo
Mark 5? lol
it's too bad no one will ever be able to buy this camera, at least without paying double on ebay =(
I'm telling you, mpex.com is the way to go! Smaller store, but still super legit that they'll get plenty of supply each time a new batch comes in 🙌
Unless I’ve got a bad copy, I’m really finding the low light performance to be abysmal. I’m finding autofocus to be very poor. But worse, the images are extremely soft and lacking in detail. Especially when it comes to photographing people indoors. It’s that bad that I’ve made the decision to sell it on. I really wanted to love this camera, but I just can’t deal with the low light performance or lack thereof. The image seems to fall apart beyond 800 ISO. It’s that bad.
I think it depends on what you're looking to create! Being that In all of my work, I add grain to the image to soften up the digital feel and usually drop clarity by -10 points as a baseline. When I'm shooting this camera at lower ISO ranges, I'm using the in-camera settings to add in that grain and then at ISO 3200 and above, I turn it off to let the natural noise come through. For me, it's beautiful, but if you're looking for an incredibly clean image above 3200, then I would look into something like the Sony A7Cii or A7IV
That's your own unit lol even old Fuji camera like XT20 have good ISO quality at 6400+.
Fucking love this camera! I can see why people might be reserved picking this up when you have an X100V though. I shot with the xpro3 for years and even though its a great camera i stopped using it less and less due to its weight and size, it also doesnt have built in flash. This camera delivers on all of that. 40 megapixel, beautiful design. under 500 grams, portable and just so easy and fun to shoot with. Great video and review.
Tough call on the upgrade from the X100V unless you like punching into that 50mm focal length. Since you're digitally zooming, the more mp the better
@@DavidManningvlog yeah fersure. Dont forget IBIS though. Its a massive difference.
Patiently waiting on my order from @MidwestPhoto
Man, crazy to hear how backed up Fuji is on delivering units. They must have known there was going to be massive demand!
