Never in my life did I imagine that I would have a video game collection as large as I have now. When I was a kid, we didn't have a whole lot of money. My mom had to stop working when I was a teenager because of her cancer, and that put financial responsibilities elsewhere. Now, thankfully, I am in a place where I can have this nice collection. One challenge of that, however, is the fact that if I want to hook them up and play them and record content off of each of them, I need to have HDMI connections for them. To date, I have been using an 8x1 HDMI switcher with a 5x1 daisychained into It. This is not the ideal solution, it did have some HDCP issues, and some signal loss to it.That's where the folks from TESmart stepped in to send me one of their 16x1 HDMI switches to solve my input issues .
As with all HDMI switchers, this one is fairly simple in its elegance. The face of the unit has push buttons for navigating your menus to select your input, but it also has the ability to be connected to a network through an Ethernet port on the front. How neat! Other features include an infrared remote control, brackets to mount to your entertainment center or a rack if you had it, an IR remote extender, and power supply.
Getting the system unboxed and tested out was very simple. One of the things I like most about this unit is the fact that the output is on one side of the system itself. My existing 8x1 has the output in the middle, and sometimes that can be a bit of a inconvenient placement. Getting everything connected took me a few minutes to swap cables in and out, And I was up and running in no time flat.
The first thing I had to test out was whether or not the PlayStation 3 would work through this. See, the PS3 was developed in an era where streaming really wasn't a thing as of yet, so as such Sony installed really difficult to bypass HDCP protocols into the system. For years, people have used simple and cheap HDMI splitters that strip out HDCP copy protection as a workaround, but it also adds signal loss. When you do that. I will tell you I was thrilled to see the PlayStation 3 played through the test smartswitch without any issues, without needing a separate HDMI splitter, or anything. This is truly wonderful.
I love and hate the remote control for this system. First and foremost, I think we got off on a bad foot because no battery was included. That kind of bummed me out. Navigating through inputs. Inputs one through nine is a snap, but once you need to get to input 10 things get a little, shall we say interesting. Going from an input higher than 10 back down to one. You might think that you should be able to just hit 01 and it goes. It. Doesn't. You just hit one, wait a few seconds, and it will switch to that input for you. Not necessarily intuitive, but I adapted pretty quickly.
    Why it RoX:
    - I can connect 16 systems via HDMI
    - Included remote control
    - Works with PS3 without a separate splitter!
    - Audible town to tell you when you switch inputs
    - Works with 4K 60 Hz
    - Smaller units available to suit your needs
    What could be improved:
    - Battery for the remote control sold separately
    - Going back from an input in the teens back down to one can take a minute to get used to
    - While not crazy expensive, it is still not cheap
    Should you buy one?
I admit that my use case is fairly unique. Most people will not have this many systems connected to one HDMI port. For that reason, I am glad that TESmart also produces smaller switches of similar quality for those who still need something. I'm glad that I was able to get rid of my daisychained HDMI switch, I'm thrilled that it works with the PS3 flawlessly, and overall I could not be happier with this unit. While I don't have all 16 inputs filled at this time, I do have plans for those open inputs. I still need to finish my HDMI mod of both my Dreamcast and my N64. Those are two HDMI ports that I'm going to need. I now have my TurboGrafx16 Mini hooked up, it wasn't before. I have options if I want to connect things such as my NES Classic or Super NES Classic. Overall, I am thrilled with the performance and simplicity that this has added to my gaming rig setup. If you need a large number of HDMI inputs, this is one you definitely need to check out.

  • @GrimmysReviews
    @GrimmysReviews Před 2 lety +2

looks good, for the PS3 you may still want to keep that splitter handy because even if the PS3 will work with the switcher, it doesn't guarantee that it will work with a capture card running out of the switcher. also my Retrotink (the original) doesn't work well with capture card passthrough and I don't know if the 5X fixed that.

I remember buying a ViewHD 2 port HDMI splitter back in December 2015 (according to Amazon order).
Many reviews at the time said it has the "unintended" feature to strip the HDCP, which was very nice. Even though I didn't split the signal (1 to switch, 1 to my Elgato Internal Capture Card), I had only got it just to strip the HDCP.
I'd say it was worth the $24 to be able to capture PS3 gameplay.

I have this exact switcher and I love it, mostly. It automatically switches inputs, and on the occasion it doesn't, switching manually won't turn off the auto-switching. Could've sworn I _did_ get a battery for the remote, though I did get the switcher from the manufacturer's website and not Amazon.
For some reason I won't get any audio from the PS4 if I hook it up to a Dell monitor instead of an actual TV, and my Sony Blu-ray player didn't play nice with it (specifically my 1080p Blu-ray of Spider-Man: Far From Home); I'd get screechy audio when entering the movie's menu (fixable by reselecting that HDMI input on my TV), and then I'd get no audio at all in the actual movie, which I couldn't fix at all, so the Blu-ray player is now on the TV's HDMI-2. I'm sure this is fixable with HDfury's DrHDMI4K, but that experiment will cost me about $150...

So you do not need to plug in an external device to get this to function normally and configure it, you should just be able to plug it in out of the box with the power and the HDMI input and output cords and magically it works? i'm at 17 consoles at without using either ossc or other upscaler or modding the consoles to output HDMI signals which push my console list past 25
you would must likely need a secondary switch to sample 1.x inputs and output to 2.X capable hdmi switch
noting that if you can get into to service meny of a snes you have options to scale either 640x480 or widescreen at 720x576 or ntsc equivalent highest resolution for S-video..personallyn i would be looking at something that had the capacity of atleast 2 outputs 1 can step into tv/avr aand the other to a pc for streaming

I have a lounge and bedroom setup aswell and also need something from a av to hdmi so i can connect s-video and/or component up to cover the av based consoles that i own though given the limitations on both avrs and tv's have limited av and hdmi ports
      me ports 1-3 ps3, ps4 pro, ps5,
      ports 4-7 360, one s, one x series x,
ports 8-9 wii u and switch
ports 10-14 mini consoles of sega, ps1, nes and snes
15 and 16 reserved for av to hdmi switches for ps1, ps2, og xbox, snes, nes, wii, n64, game cube, may pick up mega drive, saturn and dream cast

@MrDjBigZ yup i run 1 set in the bedroom and another set through the lounge just wish they had the option they had the capacity to do a 16 by 4 option so you can do game comparisons between the multiple consoles
actually us in Australia sega pretty much had the rental market in the 80's mid to late 90's sms hit a sales stride in games hampering adoptions of both 16-32bit consoles
once i went hdmi on the 360 and ps3 i haven't looked to av based hardware though the best av cables to come from sony was the ps3's s-video and component cables. for the nicest av look the ps2 and ps1..

There is something fishy about this device. They don’t list the HDMI version neither on their site and nor in the package/manual as I see from your video (not on amazon either). Since their boasting also lacks a mention of HDR, I believe this is an HDMI 1.4 or something but not 2.0.
