- Indian ringneck parrots make many different vocal sounds to communicate with us, but understanding them can be difficult at times.
It is also important to understand that parrots will use body language along with vocal sounds as well.
Taking the time to understand why and what your parrot is trying to say should be one of the first things you do.
Hopefully this video will help you better understand your parrots sounds.

IM GLAD I FOUND THIS VIDEO MY RING NECK EOULD HAVE BEEN PLUCKING ALREADY its just that she is really aggressive towards us so we can't take her out alot and when she Flys she bumps in everything
How long have you had her for? She may be plucking for many reasons like boredom or health related. If she is hurting herself when taking her out of the cage you may need to get a wing trim temporarily until she settles down, they will grow back again but be sure to take her to a vet or someone who knows what they are doing. Itâs better she has some out of cage time then stuck in a cage all the time.
Hi Riccoâ€
I think he is trying to talk..I hope he can make it..slowly day by day I think he is learning we love him and are going to only take care of him :) Thank you. xx
Aww thatâs so adorable đ„°
I've heard most of these omg the screech sounds like a hawk it scared me the first time
Some sounds like a velociraptor or a trexđ
The first time I heard the growling I couldnât believe it lol. He does a lot more other noises, but itâs difficult to get it at the right time on video.
I've just adopted an adult ringneck with some past trauma (she had her wings badly clipped) She's just finding her voice and her wings and doesn't feel very safe out of her cage (she'll sit on top for 10 mins or so and then goes back inside.) She makes a lot of screeching/alarm call and I'm just wondering what I can do to help her feel more confident out and about. She'll take food from my hand but won't let me any closer
Bless you for rescuing her. How long has she been with you? If you are on Instagram can you DM me so I can help you more.
I started to notice that I gave my bird a lot of attention whenever he started screaming whenever he just wanted attention. It didnât matter how many new toys are how much more I took him out he would still scream really loud. Then I realized my bird was just trying to get more attention. I train with my bird everyday and take him out multiple hours but they are smart enough to know how to get attention too if you arenât confident. I started just pretending to leave the house with my girlfriend their and he loves my girlfriend but he was as quiet as ever for her for hours. Ringnecks are very very intelligent so if you think you are doing everything right you need to have some belief in your abilities
They definitely are extremely intelligent animals. It is very important to also make them independent and be able to tell the difference between being bored and just calling for attention like you did.
I pointed this out in my video of bonding with a bird and to not create a bond that your bird is only dependent on you. It is very important to socialize your bird with friends and other family members as well and make them independent at times without you.
Sometimes a bird will just call out because you are a part of the flock, its best not to go running all the time if this is the case and to just let them know that you are around by answering them back as I stated in this video. You did the right thing. Sometimes I think they train us lol.

@@Riccothegreenpiedirn itâs funny, when Iâm in the other room I usually just repeat the sound that my bird makes just to let him know that Iâm listening to him.
We have a 4 year old IRN and we're debating getting another parrot/parrotlet. They would obviously be housed separately, but we'd love recommendations on other types of parrots that generally do well with IRN and recommendations on how to properly introduce them. We've googled, but I'd love thoughts from another IRN owner.
Itâs a chance you take when bringing home another bird of any species as they may never get a long. Iâve seen some odd relationships between different types of parrots get a long and some ringneck parrots never get a long. Is it a female or male, also are they bonded to you. If you do decide definitely have the new bird quarantine for at least over 2 weeks in another room to be safe.
My dad has an IRN that is not allowed out of his cage due to feral & violent behavior (also thereâs a cat & dog in the house as well) and it breaks my heart. I interact with the bird as much as possible through the bars, I talk & sing to him, I get him new toys, feed & water him but I can tell heâs frustrated being incarcerated. What can I do for this little fellow to tame him and make his little life worth living? The only room in the house he could possibly fly in is a bathroom but he wonât allow anyone to touch him without literally biting flesh to the bone and often not releasing for several minutes. Heâs around 9 years old and once was a voracious talker until the day my mom passed who interacted with him the most. He still whistles & chirps & unfortunately does his mating dance when Iâm near his cage or feed him treats through the bars. If I could somehow safely remove him from the cage, I could take him flying in the bathroom and set up additional toys but thereâs just no way to get him out. Please help. I donât want this poor little creature to suffer for the rest of his life because my dad is an irresponsible pet owner. Thank you.
My baby ringneck is 6 months old. He heard the chirping from this video and responded back with his own. It was very loud
I just got an indian ringneck 2 days and was concerned because she does not make any sound at all. Like dead silence. But glad to hear it's most likely due to a new environment. I even let it out of the cage but it fell on the ground so I picked it up to put it back in its cage since its only 3 months old and it pecked the hell out of my finger when I picked it up. Never felt that much pain before by a bird. Any advice on how to get my bird to open up to me and be more friendly to where I can have it on my hand. I'd appericate it greatly.
Aww congratulations on your new baby. Usually they are quite until they get comfortable. Is she wing clipped, if so make sure she can guide safely when trying to fly. If her wings were trimmed to short she actually could injure her keel bone when landing.
It will take time to create a bond, so give her time and donât push her into doing anything out of her comfort level. Use treats as a form of something positive from you to have her gain your trust and build a bond.
Here are some videos I did that will hopefully help you đczcams.com/video/H-4PZsRJAX0/video.html

How old was Ricco when he started mimicking words? My 2 IRNs are now 5 month old and still cannot say a word except some bird sounds. I talk to them everyday.
5 months old is still very young, give them time. Itâs not so much the age, but also how long you have had them for. Ricco was 6 months old when I got him and did not start talking until around 9 months old. Just keep in mind every bird is different and may never pick up talking at all. Just keep talking to them, they will surprise you when you least expect it. I actually am working on a video on how I taught Ricco and Chico to talk. It will be posted on Tuesday . Hope that helps đ
I just got my irn a week ago. He looks a lot like ricco but his name is Verde. He isn't really loud but is only 4 months old. He does make some of the sounds in your video only in the afternoon lol.
But he is a biter when in or on his cage. Once off his cage he is fine. He was hand fed and never really bit me when I visited him while they were weaning him but now it seems that's all he wants to do is bite. I need to break this because it's not little bites it's like break skin bites.
Aww congratulations on your new IRN.
Have you been pulling away or reacting to the bites? If so try not to as difficult as it may be, doing so only causes them to do it more. In fact you can end up teaching this behaviour by reacting to the bite. Try to pay attention to his body language as well, they usually will give you signs and warnings before biting. I do have 2 videos all about body language in my playlists. Hope this helps.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn no I don't react as I read not to react even if it hurts. I watch a lot of bird videos like yours prior to getting him and even now. I've had conures and cockatoos and they never bit me but I was their person. Hopefully he's just a baby and adjusting. But I would like to break the habit versus encouraging. How do you feel about clicker training? I wanted to try it with him.
Thankyou for your video very informative. How does it let you pat head mine wonât let me get close to pat it yet it will hop on my shoulder and get close to me but wonât let me touch him can you give me advise how I can pat him without him wanting to bite me

Okay so I NEED HELP my parents brought me 2 Indian ringnecks and I have only experienced holding budgies I donât feel comfortable with them but I also love them- should I return them and get them later on when I have experience or should I continue looking after them?
It really depends how you feel, Iâm glad you are thinking of the birds as well. Both you and the birds would need to be happy. They definitely are not the easiest birds to own and much different in comparison to budgies in many ways. I have a video in my playlist under Indian ringneck parrots called do Indian ringneck parrots make good pets and also a video called the reality of owning a ringneck parrot, hopefully it can help you make a better decision for you. If you canât find them I will send you the link when I get home. Also do you know the genders of the parrots? Iâve owned both budgies and lovebirds and by any means are they like a Indian ringneck parrot. Let me know if you need any more advice or help. Good luck on your decision.
our bird calls us back to him whenever he have to put him back in his cage or when he knows we have to leave the house without him.
Thatâs normal, itâs just part of their flock call.
My male IRN makes this cute little squeal noise when I am really close and talking to him. Do you know what it means? TY.
Its difficult to say without hearing it, but most likely your bird is just communicating with you and is happy.
i just got a 5 month old ringneck yesterday, hes still getting used to our home so hes very quiet, although he chirps a lot when near the mirror
Aww congratulations. Give him time to adjust and settle in. Anything you do, do it slowly and talk softly. Itâs also best to not have a mirror near them for now. You want him to get used to you and not the mirror.

@@Droneia Iâm sure itâs so stressful for you to see them like this, but they are lucky t have someone like you who cares. As far as birds just starting to fly, itâs pretty normal for them to bang into things while figuring things out. Ricco did it a couple of times as well. The only thing you can do is try to look around and make sure that your home is bird safe if they are flying around. Like windows, mirrors, ceiling fans or anything they can hurt themselves on.

My bird makes wet sweep like on the wet floor on the ground in the mall kinda sound.. or he would make a lounge noise then a soft one
My irn has never made a noise. Everyone moans how noisy these birds are and yet only sound we have ever heard is a growl when she doesn't want to be touched.
How old is she and how long have you had her for? Also is she afraid or friendly? They are all different but these factors could be the reason why she is not vocal yet.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn I got her 6 months ago when she was around 8 months old. She isn't scared of us and will step up reluctantly though but she is happy once she has.
@@mandyjayne1969 Some birds take a little longer to adjust and feel comfortable enough to be vocal. Most birds will do it when nobody is around in the beginning. She will come around, as long as she is happy and healthy thatâs all that matters. Her being quiet is ok, some people complain that their ringneck parrot never stop screaming lol. So you are actually lucky. Ricco likes to have his quiet time as well, especially when relaxing. Just keep talking to her, she will take everything in and find ways to communicate with you eventually. đ
Mine sometimes does this contact call when he wants to get out of his cage. Is this normal?
Could be, itâs difficult to say without seeing it or hearing it. Ricco screams sometimes when he wants out as well lol
Mine would make a noise like a sad purr like crying what does that mean... He used to do that whenever we used to show him a video of a parrot when he was a baby

nice video, the sounds mine makes are happy, i did let him out 3 times, but the third time he wouldn't go back in, ive not had him too long still, it got me in a panic because it was getting late and he wouldn't move from the curtain pole and i was scared to leave him over night, i had to get my dad to come help me, it took 6 hrs to get him back in, i feel so damn useless, now im scared to let him out for a while D:, He was chilling, but got scared when trying to get him back in, then people moaned at me for letting him out after getting him after 3 weeks :/, He's 7-9 i dno if i ever mentioned his age, i treat him with the nut things, he loves his apples, i talk to him daily but hes still so skittish (scared) if i go near the cage, i dont know how to get him to fully trust me or listen to me I'm trying daily but i barely see an improvement :(, i want to eventually get a night light for the room, and if he really doesn't go back in during the night i dont know ( thats if i let him out again in a few months) ppl said wait 6 months, so i dont know, I wish the previous owners, ( first owners, trained him, tried with him better)
Congratulations on your IRN. Did you say heâs 7-9 years old or months old? Iâd definitely take him out sooner as you want him to get used to things. Is he full flighted, if so try to keep him in a safe room in the beginning and be sure to have windows covered as well as mirrors, when they get startled itâs the first place they fly into. Iâd recommend gaining his trust with treats and favourite foods, in time use those only to get him back into the cage. If you are on Instagram or Facebook you can message me and Iâll try to help you out further. I wouldnât recommend leaving him out of the cage at nighttime or when you are not home, he could hurt himself especially if the power goes off and he canât see.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn 7,9 years old i forget what they said, hes just so scared of everything, i give him apple slices/keshew nuts, and i even tried to put those in his cage when trying to get him back in, He didn't want to go back in at all, I left curtains open etc, he didn't fly into the window or anything, he sat on the window ledge, looked out then found a higher spot to sit in my living room, i've just moved in, i dont have much things right now, I have autism and chronic undiagnosed illness's so i dont work sadly so my income isn't amazing, So when he came out the last time, it ried putting food bowl back in after 3 hrs, i put fresh water, his treats, He really wouldn't listen or go in, He kept flying over to my computer, hiding behind and standing on the wires, i turned everything off quickly as he seemed to be panicking, tried for over 4 hours my self then my dad came and he eventually flew near his cage door and went in and i managed to close the door. I feel like due to his age and no training its going to be a lot harder to train, and im not great with this stuff, i want him to fly and be free in my home, i only have a small flat so nowhere else to put him, other than my living room. Sorry for long essay, its just hard and i feel bad/sad because i've been trying for a month or so now.
He isn't stick trained/hand trained, He just tries to hide when i even go feed/put him treats down.
@@svg-_smoke Just keep reassuring him you donât want to harm him and offer him his favourite foods and treats as a way to gain his trust. It will take time and patience, but over time he will get more comfortable and hopefully start to trust you more.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn sorry i thought i replied, I have instagram or w/e the other thing is im rarely active on most things, i have a vid of him flying from my pc to his cage, But i notice a lot of missing feathers in his wings :/ its like holes i didnt even know, i've been giving him his keshew nuts/grapes/apples daily im trying to add veg in when i have money, i didnt know he was this bad when i got him, But i talk to him daily/give treats/put music on for him etc, the only hard thing is letting him out to fly, he doesnt listen, refuses to go back in his cage and i only have the big living room for him ( i've just moved in i dont have much stuff and dont get much help, my workers are trying to get me better support) im trying my best to make him happy :), he just clearly hasn't been handled properly i guess, i can stand up and hes trying to scurry left and right to move from me even though im just standing up :( he makes happy noises so im hoping he is liking it here since i got him, i've noticed hes bathing more daily too. i use calcium drop stuff in his water, the person said 2 drops monday-wed-saturday :/ bt i've been changing his water daily i dno why they said mon-wed-saturday :s. i just cant really risk letting him out again right now and it makes me feel bad with how my autism is i just want him to be happy and safe so i hope ppl dont think bad of me, i have not had him too long.

My bird came and wasn't speaking anything, except small chirping at night which he made suddenly from light sleep, and went back to sleep. We thought he needs time, but he passed away in 11 days of his arrival. We at home were discussing what might be the case, we think he was sick even before he came. We just had saw few signs on the last day.
I also messaged you on Instagram, I'm unable to forget him.
Oh no, Iâm truly sorry đą.
Hello, Do you have any good tips for taming my pet bird,I just got him and its almost been 3 weeks he is with us. But he is afraid of our hands if i try to make him step up on my hand he will bite.I tried to get him to step up on a stick but he will simply pull the stick to himself and resist.
A few days ago he started to get hormonal and started to be Cage territorial,Screaming,Biting alot etc and i got scared (I am a new bird owner) thinking i was doing something wrong since he also started biting me which he didn't used to do. His diet is okay consisting with fruits and veggies and sleep is fine.
And i cant take him out of the cage because he is fully flighted and will fly all over the place.
Before him going through the bluffing stage he use to eat from our hand outside the cage and i could even give him food inside the cage BUT he wouldnt dare to step up on my hand and will give me signs that he will try to bite, outside the cage i could sometimes even touch his feet and his chest a little bit.
So it would be nice of you to tell me some taming tips and going through this buffling stage.
How old is your bird? It also takes time for them to trust and many donât like hands or to be handled. Is your bird a Indian ringneck parrot? If you are on Instagram please DM and Iâll try my best to help you out.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn yes hello i will answer all of your questions in the instagram
I bought Indian ringneck parrot 3 days ago its almost 4 months old it isn't talking or creating any voice + not eating anything đ„ș and turn its head when i enter my room .. nor is sleeping.. what should i do?? May i put its cage in another room at night ? give space to him or interact with him most of the time ? do suggest me solutions thanks ..
Can I ask where the cage is? Itâs best to have the cage in a corner. If heâs very scared let him settle in and try not to scare him to much. Allow him to get settled in and get comfortable. Also try to put the cage higher up, if itâs too low it can make it very scary for them. You can put the cage in another room to sleep in if you think he is not getting sleep. They need time to adjust in there new surroundings. If you see he is settling down try sitting near the cage and talking to him softly, but for now give hive some time.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn Thanks alot for replying.. N Cage was just on a side to my bed on floor but now i shifted it to another room cz he wasn't taking any nap or sleep and its on a Table now .. He will eat when your not around for now. I have a video up in my playlist on how to bond with a bird, especially a frightened bird. It might help you more. Hope it helps. Keep me posted đ
My bird was just saying pick pick pick pick repeatedly
Aww thatâs so cute
My irn does all the sound types in a minute....
I had two parrots and one flew away will its partner be sad?
Oh no, Iâm so sorry đ. It really depends on the bird, are they also bonded to you as well? Some can get very depressed and feel lonely, just try to give your bird lots of attention.
Mine didnât go quite it started making sounds one day cause I had him for 2 months and now heâs happy but he is scared by hands
It takes time to gain trust especially with hands. I have a video in my playlist about this, hopefully it will help you .
My bird is eating but he have wet nose and fever and dihydreation what to do
Birds hide illnesses very well, so if your bird is showing any signs of sicknesses you need to get your bird to a vet immediately. How long has your bird been like this? This could be from many things, I canât say what it is for sure because Iâm not a doctor. Try posting this on Facebook in a group called parrot first aid, but you should take your bird to a vet if you are concerned.
I've got a new bird and she keeps attacking our hands my daughter has to wear a hoodie around the house yesterday I thought we were making friends as she came over and stole food from me so I hand fed her but then she seems to get really stimulated while on my sholder
For now itâs best to not have her on your shoulder. Many birds donât like hands and do need time getting used to them and some never do.
She is young female parrot????
Ricco is a green pied mutation, he will not get the ring around his neck. I have a video in my playlist that might help you đ
Hi, I'm the new owner of a 2-year-old IRN, can you help me tame and train my baby? He is still very afraid of me, but we are together just 3-4 daysâ€
Congratulations on your new IRN.
It does take time to gain a birds trust.
Treats and foods are always a great way to gain trust as they will start to associate you with something positive.
Here is a video I did, hopefully it will help you đczcams.com/video/jZkpu2_1iT4/video.html
Also try not to compare your bird with what you see on social media, every bird will be different. Just work at your birds pace and he will come around eventually.
Is beak grinding is normal ?
Yes itâs normal, I have two videos up n my playlist that are all about body language and what they mean. Hopefully they can help you more. The beak grinding is in the videos as well.

This is how he stays with his wings that makes me worried
Hopefully you saw my coment from my other accound but in case you didnât
Im not sure this is hormonal behaviour or he vomited
He looked up and this this with his neak ~~ [its the best was to despribe it ] and then he started chewing i didnât see any liquid [ aka vomit or other]
He has normal poop
He makes normal Alexandrine parrot noises
He also imitates other birds
He flyes around
And acts normaly
He did this once and then never did it again
I canât respond to your comment for some reason about Kiwi. I see the comment but canât respond. I believe it might be him clearing his crop, itâs normal. Ricco does it as well đ

Kiwi also makes lorikeet sounds
Wotch makes sence since we got him from a breeder that had almost every tipe of bird

Will you be free flying him outdoors?
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn at the moment im not sure if i will free flight train him
I would love to but some hawks have make a nest close to our house and im scared they will kill Kiwi if they see him out doors
At the same time there is a perfect place to free flight train Kiwi close to our house
I might try to free flight train him out doors but for now he is still a baby so idk
@@moofie1262 yes thatâs why Iâd be to afraid. Even if you are going to do it outside, you would need to start training him in a special netted area. Even if they are trained inside, it is an entirely different world outside for them. Anything that will spoke them, they will take off for safety.

Sometimes it takes time, it took me 1 year for Ricco to fully trust me. Had he always been like this. Also is he food motivated?
Some birds are just afraid of hands. Does he ever fly to you on his own?
Iâve had my bird for 3 days and he does the alarm noise even though Iâm right next to him
He could be afraid of something you are wearing, something around him or even yourself. Has he had time to settle in without to much interaction. Sometimes itâs just because of a new surrounding as well. Try to see if you can figure out what is causing him to do the alarm call, it could also be something in the cage, something he sees outside. Itâs difficult to pin point what it could be without trying different things until he stops.
@@Riccothegreenpiedirn heâs still settling in
