  • Here are 10 tips on how you can create a bond with your bird. Many of you have asked how I was able to build the relationship I have with Ricco. So I have put together some simple tips that will hopefully help you and your bird as well.
Bonding with your bird can take a lot of time and patience, but the ending results will be so rewarding. Taking the time to build your birds trust first is very important, without this you cannot create a bond between you and your bird.
Every bird is different, so keep this in mind when trying to bond with your bird.
Always go at your birds pace, however long that might take and don’t give up.
It took me 1 year to develop the bond that Ricco and I have, but it was well worth the wait.

I had a Ringneck Dove , once . My girlfriend rescued him , as a fledgling , from a momma cat and kittens , who had already pulled out his tail feathers , and he appeared battered , but not bitten .
She put him in a big dog crate (all she had) and headed to my house for the weekend , and we put him in an empty room I had and pretty much left him alone to , hopefully, get over the shock . After we appeared a few times over the next 2 days to leave a little water and food , speaking softly and moving slowly , he didn't "freeze" anymore . ( Let me tell y'all , I never had a pet bird , never wanted a bird in a cage , but as the vid points out , think from the bird's pov . The size difference. And just use common sense ... a bird that doesn't know you doesn't want to grabbed hold of , their wings pinioned , and petted like a puppy ! In nature , remember , their existence depends on not being grabbed and pinioned. You will notice , I think , birds DEFINITELY check out any new item or moved item in the house , their environment , for safety !)
I don't want to write a book here .... but we were gonna nurse Birdie back to health for a few weeks (he WAS a fledgling, so ready to be on his own .... the cats must have got him on his maiden voyage before he could regain the safety of bush and low branch .) So , essentially we were waiting on his feathers to grow back and set him free , which took about 3 weeks .
Sooooo , 19 years later , my good friend and I parted , as we all must do in time and I loved that little bird as much as any dog I ever had or friend I've known . He never tried to fly away though door's had been inadvertently left open in easy reach , and I would often go to my side door to look at the Sunsets with Birdie on my shoulder ! And he never once tried to get away . Why would he ? We were best friends . 2 years gone and it still hurts

To be honest with you I’m not a fan of harnesses. I’m always worried it can snap off somehow, but that’s just me. I’m sure if you check on CZcams someone would have made a video about it. It’s always best to desensitize them to anything by having it in sight for a couple of days before introducing them to it. I always recommend treats for any training especially if your bird is food motivated. Hope that helps.

I covered Ricco’s perch because the bottom seemed uncomfortable and had natural pointy wood that I thought would bother him. He seemed much more comfortable with it once I did. If you do add material just pay attention to make sure she is not biting it, the issue is they can ingest the fibres and it’s very dangerous for them.

What else can I do. She’s slowly talking well just once lol. But she’s always yapping at me lol. She seems sketchy and I don’t like it. Maybe it’s from the pet store I got her from.

Aww she’s probably still trying to adjust, ringneck parrots take a little longer to trust us. How does she act when you put you hands in the cage? Also how does she act when you are near the cage, does she run back to the cage or seem interested in what you are doing? Can you tell me a little more in her behaviour with you. Does she come out of her cage? If she is food motivated, that’s always a great way to gain her trust.
Also how old is she? Was she hand fed?

@@Riccothegreenpiedirn when i put hands in her cage she moves like she’s scared. When I’m near the cage she’s just kinda stares lol yes she comes out the cage. When i open her cage door she waits till i move away to come out lol then she will climb up and start chirping at me lol. She’s I’m guess about a year now because she was about 4-6 months when I got her in February and NO never hand fed which sucks.

@@sarahw7650 So that’s ok if she wasn’t hand fed. Ricco was but not by me and it still took me one year for him to fully trust me. Indian ringneck parrots do have a tendency to be a bit more skittish when it comes to hands, so she probably just needs more time. She definitely seems like she is interested in you and not afraid, so I would just keep working with her. If she is food motivated use that to your advantage. Just work with her as much as you can. I would start by leaving a treat in the same spot every time without your hands present and slowly start putting your hands where she can see them till eventually they are closer to her each time. It would be the same as introducing her to a new toy or object, you always want to do it from a distance at first. She is still young which is great for you. Is she fully flighted or wing trimmed? Also are you able to pick her up out of the cage? It’s something about hands entering a cage that scares them at times, especially if they are not used to hands. I would also wait till she comes to the door instead of actually putting your hand in, just talk to her and move slowly and pay attention to her body language. If she shows fear just back away and let her come out on her own till she realizes you are just trying to help her. Also always try to be at her level, it’s scary for them when you are standing above them.

@@Riccothegreenpiedirn ummm no not trimmed because we just got off lock down from COVID as I’m from Toronto. When i put my hand in her cage to change water she’s skiddish I open the cage n she comes out on her own. But i have to walk away lol. Also when she does come out she goes on top of her cage and yells at me lol so i come back in the room and she goes quiet. I talk to her and whistle and as i do that she looks away lol then i look away and she looks at me then i look at her she looks away. Lol i dnt know if its because shes shy but its like a game i guess lol.

If you cant give time to do all these things with your bird then sont get one. If you cant accept rejection for an extended amount of time dont get a bird. If you dont like mess dont get a bird. If you dont like noise dont get a bird. If you dont like being bitten sont get a bird. If you get annoyed easy and value your things dont get a bird. If it's the opposite you'll be a perfect bird owner.

How long have you had him for? Most birds take time to get used to hands, for now I wouldn’t reach in the cage with your hands if it is making him afraid. Gain his trust first with treats and let him come to you at the door, but never force him or you will break the trust.

Birds usually bite for many reason such as being afraid, over excited or if they are forced into doing something they don’t Ike what you are doing just to name a few. It’s important to understand why and what is causing your bird to bite.

That’s amazing, trust is the most important thing to have with a bird. Many parrots do not like touch or are very wary of hands for some reason. It took me 1 year for Ricco to fully accept touches. I did a video on this, hopefully it can help you out 👉czcams.com/video/GjOohqEQT9Y/video.html
