  • This video is all about parrot body language and the meanings of them.
    Recently I’ve had some questions from bird owners about behaviours or why their bird is doing what they are doing?
    So I have put together some parrot behaviours and body language that will hopefully help you understand your bird better. Understanding why your bird does what they do can come in handy for many things like building a better bond and being able to be aware of health issues ahead of time before it becomes to late. Simply paying attention to your birds behaviour daily will help you with this.

      I've only let my Indian ring neck out once inside the house because I had to put 2 toys inside the cage and let him or her out to walk around but I've had the bird since I've got the bird as a baby but I've been told it's a boy because of the black line around it's neck but is that true

    • @Riccothegreenpiedirn
      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před rokem

      @@crystalwaterhouse5680 is there a reason you are not taking out your bird from the cage? Your bird needs to come out of the cage daily and should never be locked in a cage all the time. This is not healthy for your bird at all, this can lead to many health and mental issues long term.

    We got our ringneck last July, when he was just 3 months old.
    At first he would just sit in the corner of his cage, terrified, and would totally freak out whenever we cleaned him out or changed his food/water. It took about 2 months of _very_ gentle movements and patience but now he loves nothing more than being around his humans; he loves to sit on my shoulder while I'm pottering around the house, we share food, and he even sleeps on my hand sometimes (although I'm not yet permitted to give scritches).
    They are such wonderful companions and it makes my heart sing whenever he picks up a new word/sound 🐦❤

    I loved, and needed this, so much!! We just got two ringnecks yesterday and I’ve already noticed some of the behaviors you covered in this video but didn’t know what they all meant! I feel much more at ease knowing now and knowing that they’re content. I’m definitely going to have to set a play space up on top of their cage! I can’t yet tell if they’re male or female yet, as they’re only 3 months or so, but Shakespeare and Blue are definitely curious and do really well with being handled. I’ve noticed Shakespeare won’t yet let me give him little rubs on his head or neck like Blue but he will now let me rub the front a little when I couldn’t do that yesterday so progress! They’re still quiet, except for their little spats (which have decreased since yesterday too, really since we got them home) but Blue started singing a little note or two and it’s so pretty! Lol. Thank you so much for these videos and you certainly have a new subscriber!

    Author, I have a female ringneck bird in my apartment and I see that normally when she hears the sound of vacuum machine, she starts getting nervous and tensive and then starts flying around with panic scream.
    Have you ever faced the similar case with your bird?
    And also it happened that when my sweetie bird saw my spinner she also got nervous and started flying around with panic scream.
    Do you find it strange or is it normal? Can you explain me please?

    • @Riccothegreenpiedirn
      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před 2 lety

      It means she is afraid of it. My Chico was like this with many things. I would need to take him in another room whenever I vacuumed or did things that would make him afraid. It is very common for birds to be afraid of things like these, especially because they are prey birds. Other pets like dogs and cats are also afraid of unfamiliar objects. Some birds actually like the vacuum, my Ricco shows off anytime I vacuum lol, but many are afraid.
      I would either take her in another room or put her in her cage for safety. You don’t want her banging into anything if she is panicking. Their natural instinct is to fly to safety and being indoors they could really hurt themselves. My Ricco banged into a window when he heard a noise, he panicked and went straight for the window. Thankfully he was ok but now I always close curtains to be safe. Hope that helps you.

    My female ringneck was showing the mating behaviour with my sister. Eg Head bowed, head tipped up, eyes pinning and a small grind/growling sound.
    It also looked like she was doing a little strut, almost as if limping. I only noticed her doing this when my sister was nearby, but wasn't sure if it was just when she was walking slowly. Does this sound like something they also do? She was walking, kind of dipping her head as she walked along and around my sister.

      Congratulations on your new Ringneck parrot. IRN’s are much different in comparison to conures and budgies, but seeing as your not new to birds you will be fine. The most important thing is to not have expectations and keep in mind every bird is different. That being said it is best to take things slow and don’t push her into anything she doesn’t feel comfortable with as you will lose her trust. If you are on Instagram or Facebook DM me and I’ll send you some other links to videos I have done that may help you, or you can find them in my playlist.

Her name is NooNoo and we rescued her she was an adult and we had her from four years back.

    • @Riccothegreenpiedirn
      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před rokem +1

      Sounds like she is afraid as well. It’s best to work with her slowly to gain her trust. Try to find out what her favourite treats or foods are and only use these to gain her trust when going up to her cage. You need to talk softly and move slowly with whatever you do. Try sitting near her cage and just talk to her softly and show her that you don’t mean any harm and at the same time offer her treats, this will take time and patience. Afterwards when she sees that you are the one with good food use that to get her back in the cage, but you can only give her that treat at bedtime. You can also try searching videos on how to help with a fearful bird. Hope that helps for now.

      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před 2 lety

      If your bird is very afraid and flapping all over the place when you go near the cage you need to work with him more. I would use treats and food to gain his trust. You can leave it through the bars for now and walk away until he is comfortable enough to come close to you in his cage. Whatever you do don’t make any fast movements, talk softly and sit at the cage level without to much eye contact. Just talk to him every day and be around him in the same room so he sees you mean no harm. Eventually if you want to take him out of the cage you will need to do this in a room that is safe so he doesn’t hurt himself like windows & mirrors. It can be dangerous for them when they get scared, if there is a possibility that he could really injure himself you may need to trim his wings slightly for now. I would only allow someone who knows what they are doing to do this, you can let them grow in after. Hope that helps.

    Hi we are getting a male IRN baby very soon. We had an African Grey Parrot for 31 years (since she was a baby) sadly she passed from heart disease. She was very nice & never bit. I’ve read IRN can be snippy especially during adolescence, as well as not liking to be touched by humans. Any advice on how to handle these 2 major fi cents I have? Thank you in advance. ❤

      So sorry to hear about the loss of your African Grey, after 31 years that must’ve been so difficult.
      Every IRN will be different, I just recommend getting them used to things like touches, hands, noises and pretty much introduce them to anything as a baby. I regret not travelling more with Ricco as a baby in a car and have him used to being in other new surroundings and homes for travelling purposes.
      Other than that it’s all about learning the behaviour of your bird and understanding what they like or dislike. Although Ricco is a sweetheart he still will bite when over excited and playing or doesn’t want scratches anymore, but I’ve learned to pick up on it ahead of time however sometimes it’s unavoidable. Hope that helps.

      @@Riccothegreenpiedirn this helps a lot thank you‼️ African Grey parrots are very strong & Rowdy (my girl RIP) only bit me once on accident when she was startled at the vet. It drew blood but it was an accident. It was so difficult when she passed away. She was on her perch, fell off & was flapping her wings at the bottom of her cage. I scooped her up held her & she passed in my arms. I started giving her mouth to mouth. I brought her to the vet we’ve had since she was a baby. He offered to do a free necropsy on her. He said she passed from heart disease I guess it’s the #1 thing birds in captivity pass away from. There are no tests to check for this and she was healthy the night before. Ok thanks for reading & I’ll be sure to keep watching your videos.

    My Indian ring neck male is 12 weeks old. He often lands on my head and hates me taking him off. He growls/ bites. Lately he has been randomly lunging and biting my face (lips) quite painfully. It’s quite upsetting. Do you have any advice or tips to stop this behaviour? Should I give in and let him stay on my head?

    • @Riccothegreenpiedirn
      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před rokem

      I’m surprised that he is displaying such an aggressive behaviour at this age.
      I’d definitely not allow him on your head or shoulders for that matter for now. Have you showed him that you are fearful of him when he does bite?
      As difficult as it may be it’s important not to show any reaction to his bites or bad behaviour, it will just in courage him to act like this more and it will get more difficult as he matures.
      Simply put him down and walk away to give him a time out. Diet and lack of sleep can also contribute to certain behaviours.

    • @Riccothegreenpiedirn
      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před 2 lety

      It takes time to gain trust and build a bond. Use food as a way to build trust and anything you do, do it slowly and talk softly. Try sitting near his cage every day and talk softly without eye contact, but sit far enough so your not making him afraid. It’s a difficult decision about wing clipping, but if it’s for the bird’s safety you could and allow them to grow back in after. Make sure that wherever you take him for a wing clip they do it properly and not to short, you still want him to be able to glide and land properly otherwise he could hurt himself. If you decide not to clip his wings, be sure to make your house safe when you let him out if the cage especially if he’s afraid he could bang into mirrors and windows. Also never put your hand in the cage for now, let him warm up to you slowly and work at his pace, once you ruin the trust it’s difficult to get it back and he might become aggressive out of fear. Is he hand fed or wild?

      @@qazali5744 that’s amazing, such great news. I would keep working with him and if you are planning on taking him out I would try to keep him in a safe room where he can’t hurt himself, like windows, mirrors etc. You could also do wing clipping to keep him safe for now. I would keep his favourite foods and don’t feed him those, keep those for only training. Is he on a all seed diet or pellets as well? Does he eat vegetables and fruits? I keep walnuts and almonds as treats only for Ricco.

      @Riccothegreenpiedirn  Před 2 lety

      @@qazali5744 Oh no, hopefully he’s ok. Are you trying to convert him to pellets? If so this needs to be done slowly . Eventually once he enjoys pellets you can feed him the seeds as treats. Try to go with natural pellets with no colour and natural preservatives. If he’s on a seed diet for now he definitely needs greens and vegetables, Vegetables is a very important part of their diet. I have a video in my playlist on how to introduce them to unfamiliar foods like pellets and vegetables. I also have a video for safe foods and diet for a ringneck parrot. Yes Ricco is a male. Once matured they have a mating behaviour that is different as you saw in this video. I’m in the process of doing a upgraded video on how to tell the difference between them, but it may take me a couple of weeks because I’m still working on another video.
      When they are young they will sometimes do both behaviours, so sometimes it’s difficult to tell.
