Anytime two of the top 12 players in the league team up one of the two is going to get hurt in the MVP race. When Steph and kd played together each lost some MVP votes. I think it's only fair that after adding a guard who averaged 32 pts the year prior, Giannis is not regarded as the most valuable player.

Last year Giannis became the first 30ppg+ scorer on a team with the best record in the entire league not to win MVP. He was robbed of his third MVP last year. Like Shaq said, the criteria for MVP changes every year to fit certain narratives.
Regardless, great video, despite all the struggles in the bucks this season, from coaches to players, Giannis has been the only bright spot in the team. Being the most consistent, putting up the first ever 30ppg on 60+%FG in the history of the league to carry the team in the top 3 of the conference. Definitely deserves MVP nod this year.

@@elizaschaeffer34 I agree with you. And he keeps improving year after year.
Though to my point, there's a big gap between his playmaking and Jokic's playmaking. And his style, even though I love watching it and requires a lot of skill to be able to finish as he does, is more oriented bully ball, using his strength and speed to overwhelm defenses. Which is not as Jokic, which looks like defense manipulation, and using what opens up.
I honestly just love watching beautiful basketball in many different forms and enjoy a lot of players. I do think the voters have a bias for Jokic. Maybe because it looks maybe more relatable to them ? Like, Jokic was a fat kid who happens to have a brain for basketball (and he got fit and learned more and more). As for Giannis, if you don't have his physical ability, no way you can replicate that.
To your point, Giannis improvement in playmaking is probably overlooked
      Sorry for the big read

    • @elizaschaeffer34

@@emmanuelcoquet6257 so i can tell you don’t watch many bucks games by this statement alone “there’s a big gap between his playmaking and jokics” -there is not. Watch the games. Go and look at passing stats. Giannis creates 18 points a game through playmaking. In addition to his 31.
Giannis also creates his own points whereas Jokic plays mainly off of assists.
Giannis has reduced bully ball, but can certainly engage with the best when needed. This season he is finishing with more finesse around 3-6 feet out & more post ups.
Watch Giannis. It isn’t all bully ball. He has quite a repertoire of highly efficient shots.
Giannis has his physical ability because he earned it. Maintaining your body and developing your body to peak physicality is a skill.
As Gianni’s has been playing with tendinitis for several games, we’ve seen a lot of what Giannis would look like when he slows down with age. Lots of midrange, post up, some 3s, and tons of facilitating.

Giannis covers a ton of ground as weakside free-safety. I've seen almost all of the Bucks' games this year, and he is "taking it easy" on some possessions, i.e. he's not sprinting out to the 3pt line as fast as he normally would, he's not going for every single block. He's playing at about 80% on defense and his pick-and-roll defense is still ELITE. There's a reason why teams go after Brook Lopez on the PNR, because he drops low to protect the rim and give up jump shots. Giannis is saving himself for more offense because Lillard has been inefficient, and Middleton has been missing for two months, and besides he and Dame, the Bucks have no one else who's good at creating for themselves. Hence why his assist numbers have been excellent (and efficiency).

I still would consider Luka for MVP, as you can make similar arguments (comparing his pace & stat line vs historic numbers) for him as well.
Team success hurts, but even Jokic won MVP leading the 6th seeded team in 2022. At this point, it feels like Luka has set the bar so high for himself, that media & fans just shrug it off.
Averaging 34.7 ppg / 9.8 assists / 9.0 rebounds on 62%+ true shooting as PG (and not as a C or someone who gets the majority of buckets underneath the rim) is crazy. Nobody would ever suggest the Mavericks have a roster anywhere as talented as Shai in OKC or Giannis in Milwaukee, yet they still penalize him for not having similar success.
All that being said, I'd still put Giannis & Jokic above Luka right now. But if Luka doesn't win MVP this year, I'm not sure he'll ever be able to do enough in the eyes of sports media.

The NBA chooses new MVP to make fans happy and to make the nba look fresh and new. Who wants the true MVP to win 10 times for example. NBA is a business and is no longer a game, choosing Giannis 4x MVP yearly is boring for the business hence choosing joker and embiid. rightfully Giannis is the best player in this league.

The media decided Jokic is the MVP before the season even started. he’s had a great season, but Giannis has been better. Giannis has faced more adversity. Giannis never got the adoration that Jokic is getting.

Giannis is a better rim attacker and shot blocker. Jokic is better at post game, shooting, half court scoring, rebounding, screening, playmaking, passing overall, basketballI IQ, clutchness, floor raising and difficulty to scheme against in a playoff setting.
Giannis' transition prowess is always diminished in a playoff half court setting.
2019 they were upset as the 1st seed by the Raptors and outplayed by Kawhi.
2020 They were upset as the 1st seed by the Heat and Giannis was the fourth best player in the series (behind Jimmy, Bam, Kris and arguably also Brook).
2023 They were upset as the 1st seed by the Heat and Giannis was thoroughly outplayed by Jimmy Butler (who averaged 39 pts) whom he refused to guard.
In 2021, when they son the championship, the five best teams in the league at full health were out of contention ( Nets, Warriors, Nuggets, Lakers, Clippers). Giannis declared Kd the best player in the world after their game 7 matchup.
As it currently stands I have Giannis as a top 3 player in the league but nowhere close to Jokic.

To a degree I dont get pinning the MVP to team success, I would have Luka for MVP and Giannis second, the Thunder and Denver have some of the best overall rosters in the NBA, Luka has a team full of underachievers currently in 6th seed while putting up monster stats, with Giannis, his defense contributes so much to team success, without him on the floor they are one of the worst teams in the nba defensively, and without him this team would not make it out the first round, I dont see that with the Thunder much less with Denver

Giannis doesnt care for MVPs. Hes a philosopher-warrior due to his Greek-Nigerian upbringing. By his logic, to win an MVP and not win the championship means that he has something to show for himself but nothing to show for his team. And he comes from a large family where sharing was very important so selfish actions like winning an MVP without a championship are not his goals. His goal is to win a chip. Winning MVPs like Russ and Harden do with nothing to show for it at the end of the year is selfish. It means you put yourself above your team and Giannis isnt playing that game. He plays to win the last game of the year, because that's what legacies are built on.

There've been only 15 players to win 2 or more MVPs in NBA history. Pettit, Russel, Wilt, Kareem, Moses, Magic, Bird, K. Malone, Jordan, Duncan, Nash, LeBron, Curry, Giannis and Jokic. Trust me it matters. If Jokic and/or Giannis wins one more, they're entering even more exclusive company (8 guys). Handing out MVP trophies as a participation award is terrible. Giannis and Jokic are the two best players alive and in their peak/prime at 29 years old. SGA has been phenomenal this season and the fact that he's in the Top 3 of the race speaks volumes.
