- The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest building in the world for over 3000 years until old St. Paul’s cathedral was constructed in the 1200s CE. It was already 2,000 years old when Herodotus was said to have visited, and he said it had already been robbed.
Welcome to episode 1 of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Series! Who actually came up with this list, and why is it only possible to visit one of them today? Did the rest of the wonders even exist? Let's find out.

Seriously, Raven, you are an absolute wonder yourself, a marvelous story teller and teacher. Thank you very much for sharing those other lesser wonders. Please keep sharing what you "see"!
I got to visit Giza last November, and it was great; but dang the step pyramids were a better experience. Just less people, and the hieroglyphics inside the pyramids there were still visible.
It's just so crazy that the Great Pyramid was 2000 years old when Herodotus was telling his lies. ;)
I would love to be able to someday see the Great Pyramid. Until then, I'll live vicariously though Raven.
His tour guides lies.
I've been in Egypt since October 13th and I finally made it back to the Giza plateau yesterday. It was just as AMAZING and surreal as I remembered it was from 6 years ago.
looking forward to the rest of these wonders! I learned a lot about the actual structures within the pyramid from this video and I'll have to look into it more, I can't wait to see what further research reveals
Glad you enjoyed it! Excited for the rest of them too
Always love your passion.
"The official list as we know it today became as famous and well-known as it is thanks to..."
Brain - "the Civilization video game series. She's about to say it here we gooooo"
"...the Renaissance"
Brain - "oh right"
I appreciated the history lesson leading up to the pyramid section. I haven’t been in school for 20 years and your explanation really helped me with context for the rest of the video.
I'm so glad! I love context so I'm glad it added a lot of value for you too
Can't wait for this full series! Particularly the Hanging Gardens 🪴
To me The Great Pyramid of Giza is still the greatest architectrial acievement in human history especially when you consider the technology that was available at the time...i am really looking forward to the rest of the series
Yes the structure itself reflects a monumental achievement for early man. More than the pyramid itself however is what it took to create it vis a vis = infrastructure. Egypt had to unify itself towards a united effort to create the pyramids - and having done so set the stage for its subsequent greatness.
To create the pyramids the Egyptians had to create large, organized workforces which in turn had to be supplied. That means obtaining all the raw materials needed for the actual work + transporting sufficient agriculture to site to sustain that workforce + the creation of ships and harbors to achieve this logistical network + the importation of copper ore etc. needed for tools etc..
Think the railroads of the late-19th Century in the US. They did not simply lay some railroad tracks. They connected an otherwise disparate nation facilitating new routes of transportation and communication. Further by having a means to move goods about more freely what were local/regional industries could now transport their goods long distance and beyond creating national and international industries.
Moral of the story: the creation of the pyramids transformed Egyptian society uniting it and creating an internal/external logistical system which helped to transform the nation into a greater power in the region. Thus they themselves are a marvel. In creating them however = that is the real achievement. 🤔
An absolutely fantastic video Raven very informative, I have seen the great pyramid and like you forgot to take photos inside. Am looking forward to seeing the rest of the videos on the seven wonders of the ancient world

Pausanieus travel guide to the 7 wonders to the ancient hellenic world was the first reference to there being 7 wonders. He was a priest to a god called Aesclepios called therapeutie 2centry c.e.
Your Dutch pronunciation of Maaren van Heemskerck was exemplary!!!!!!!
THANK YOU! 3 years of living in Amsterdam finally paid off :D
Interesting Egyptian Ptolomeic/Roman period mummy exhibition in Manchester recently, it might have been in london so you might have seen it, have to meet you up in my kilt and discuss haha.
Hi Raven, thanks for another great video!
You have hinted about it a few times but I would love to know your opinion on the archeological treasures removed and "stored" in museums in the western world, especially the UK. Should they be returned?
Cute and informative 🙏💖🙏💜🙏
RAVEN! Tell us MORE about the new...Oh. You are. Okay. So! That "void" thing! Do you think...maybe...perhaps...it is where they stored THE BANANA OIL used in the construction process? Remember? Make it slippery for the stones to move? (pause) No? (sighs) Fine. What an EXCELLENT educator you are? I am thinking you have THREE Masters degrees and NOT just two. The third one being a TEACHING degree. But...knowing you...that talent like SO MANY others probably just comes naturally! High Five my fellow Canadian! Who I love and support even though you're from (cough) Toronto. = )
😂😂 if they ever find evidence of banana oil, I’ll dedicate that video to you!! Oh gosh I already have enough trauma from the first two Masters, I don’t think I could do a third, but THANK YOUUU!!!
@@DigItWithRaven (Bows Deeply) You are VERY welcome, milady....!
22:00 Another pyramid has a block tagged "Drunks of Menkaure" so I guess ancient Egyptians drinkers sometimes built pyramids. (Also, one of the worlds oldest surviving jokes.)
Thanks for a great summary of what I’ve started studying ( as an amateur) Did you feel claustrophobic in the great pyramid?
Not too much, but the first ascending passage is very narrow and small 😬
Yay!!!
I so hope the Bennu is the origin of the Phoenix.
I have no doubt there is so much more complexity hiding in the Great Pyramid than we know right now(thanks to the aliens of course 😉)
I will tell you about one city that is rich in successive cultural treasures, such as the civilization of Almustatil, the civilization of Thamud, the civilization of the Dadan Kingdom, the civilization of the Kingdom of Lihyan, and the civilization of the Nabataeans.
National Graphic produced a film about the kingdom of Dadan
And the Al-Ula Authority produced a film about the almustatil civilization on CZcams entitled: Architects of Ancient Arabia
It is rich in writings and rock drawings from several successive civilizations. It is like a museum with an open space without limit, because the Arabian Peninsula is rich in many writings, inscriptions and drawings of multiple civilizations.
You can benefit from Dr. Eid Al Yahya's programs in watching the civilizations of Al-Ula and other Arab civilizations in the Arabian Peninsula
Early Christians thought the Pyramids were granaries. The main prerequisite of a granary building, is that it’s hollow inside.
This says a lot about the logic of early Christians, and we still have millions of people hanging on their every word.
The Ishtar gate is dated to .... Biblical reference.....? ( Oh my gosh...!)
Humans are a pretty weird wonder created by nature
...as are you
Things seem old when Antipater of Sidon felt that things seemed old. Are you a Horse♐ in your Sun or Rising sign?
Ancient aliens 🎃
Bishop Gregory of Tours wrote a tour guide?
.....
There's a joke in there somewhere....
🫀🖤🫀
have you made a video about graffiti?
No but I should!!
I guess our modern world’s wonders are the ever growing UNESCO list
It would be great if you could not read to notes in the video, your eyeballs going to the right of the camera constantly was distracting, and I am stopping the video at 6:52, now.
At the end, you say: "Time fears the pyramids." and while I don't disagree with this, the erosion rate for limestone is about an inch for every 10,000 years. Now lets look at Crazy horse mountain, which is in South Dakota 22 miles from Mt. Rushmore, and is being carved from solid granite, and granite erodes at about an inch every million years. Now, I know the pyramids have a leg up by starting sooner, but I think the pyramids will be long dust before Crazy horse Mountain will. I know which one time ought to fear more!
The eight wonder is Patsy Kensington 😎
More debunks!
