Fascinating Fiction is a scripted video essay series in which Pokeprof goes over various forms of fictional media to give his personal thoughts, analysis and opinions on what brought these characters and stories to life.
Part of this was done because I felt like I've been not delivering on my content in the manner I should. Part of it was done because I was morbidly curious. And Part of this was done because I know you all go and look at my Tenchi video's the most. So here it is, folks, the Tenchi Muyo OVAs.

Lets not forget the that the vast majority of the lore and plot are also locked behind the novels. Many of the plot lines in the later OVAs take place after stuff that happens in said novels. I remember having to literally research whole stories written in books just to understand who the hell some of these seemingly new characters were.
Yeah, that's the problem a lot of media can have these days, where to get the full story or to understand everything, you need to read material that might not always be easy to obtain. That sequel to GXP I talked about in this video? It actually is about bringing a bunch of character from the light novels into the main storyline.... which wouldn't matter to most people because they wouldn't have even known about them! ~ Pokeprof

@@adamwilliams4928 The three Novels that Have Been Translated (Jurai, Yosho, and Washu) are prequels to the OVAs). There are 17 Novels spun off from The OVAs which are GXP novels and 3 Novels called Paradise War. Those novels are all from the Ryo-Ohki Continuity. There have been fan translations of those novels online. The GXP anime was ruined by its director. So much plot was lost.

Tenchi Muyo was the first series that introduced me to what a harem was. 😂
Toonami had a good eye for anime. I'll never forget that one scene about Tenchi appearing in the girls bathroom after Washu's dimensional machine started malfunctioning.
Tenchi wasn't the first harem anime that I ever knew or got into (That honor, even if it's not a true harem, belongs to Ranma 1/2), but it's still pretty solid series overall. Just more insane when you actually do a deep dive as far as it's actual lore and plot! ~ Pokeprof

It's got good ELEMENTS, but there's a lot of problems with it. The series itself was created by the same person who created Inuyasha so if you're familiar with some of the problems that anime has, you'll recognize them in Ranma. IT really depends on what you're looking for. Trust me when I've said I've been thinking of doing a full review on THAT series. ~ Pokeprof
Tenchi Muyo OVA, War on Geminar, GXP, Duel Parallel Worlds Adventure, Photon Idiot Adventure, and a porn ova(I always forget the name of that Space Rauter somthin) That all apart of the main OVA canon, and add in the books. Its realy a lot to take in if you ant the whole story. And the way the newest ep of the OVA works it just kinda asumes you know everything, lol.
Yeah, there's a lot of things that are problematic with that. If you've got the set up to have your fans know where to go and what to read to understand, then yeah, having a multi media world like this isn't bad. The problem is when you're like 'HEY, HERE'S THE NEW STORY' and you're like 'Who are half of these people? ~ Pokeprof
You've got Harem, Sci Fi supernatural, Isekai, Incest, Shounen, Shoujo, Echi, slice of life, Action, drama, world building, insanity, KH levels plot, magic girl...etc. and lots and lots of IN VIN DIESEL VOICE "FAMILY"

Hehe, yep. I'll be coming back to this series again sooner rather than later... though probably not the OVAS. I think the next thing I'll tackle is either one of the movies or the Tokyo series. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds I'd love to hear your thoughts on Tokyo. I think most western audiences stopped with OVA 3 or never picked it back up after the 10 year period in between seasons. I definitely stopped at OVA 3 as I'd seen OVA 1, 2, Universe, and the movies all dubbed. When I heard the new voices it hit me like a truck..
To be fair, by the time the third OVA came out, the world had really moved on from Tenchi being one of the big ones. It didn't have the staying power DBZ or even Sailor Moon has had, so it coming back didn't have the same level of 'Oh wow, let's watch it' as other series had.
As far as Tokyo goes, though, I might be tackling it probably after Christmas? Nothing set in stone, though. I've got Holiday videos to work on and I'm serious about some of those other video ideas. ~ Pokeprof

I'm not entirely surprised. They actually haven't dubbed anything past the point that I've actually showed on the channel thus far as the original Tenchi OVAS. Tenchi, as a franchise, seems to have kinda taken a back seat when it comes to being dubbed. While we can hope for the future, I'm not sure if we'll see any more. ~ Pokeprof
....Shinichiro Watanabe definitely got infected. Excel Saga is a prime example of that. If you ever step on THAT metaphorical landmine, I'd see if you could get the subbed version. While the dub isn't entirely inaccurate, the original english voice actress for Excel does this weird high pitched gravelly voice that ended up damaging her throat and she had to bow out halfway through the series, whereas the subbed VA stayed all throughout.
Then again, Excel Saga is very much a "blink and you might miss five jokes" sort of anime, so I don't blame you if you decide to avoid that one.

The reason I got from Petrea Burchard about not voicing Ryoko later was "contract issues". Good enough for me as I don't want to pry too much into matters that aren't any of my business 😅.
I was just so happy to meet her and the others that made it that day at PMX 2012 The Ladies of Tenchi Muyo panel.
Ah, that makes sense! Wouldn't be the first time a voice actor had been replaced because of the contract. Even then, I feel like they could have done a better job in getting someone who could have emulated Burchard's VA. I love Mona Marshal and all, but she always just sounds like Izzy to me. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds it was a great panel, but PMX put them in waaaaay too small a room. They could have filled a room 10x bigger! I'm glad I got there an hour before.
About the voice, my head cannon is that Ryoko asked Washu to help a bit with her aging and ended up making her voice sound younger too.
I mean, Washu's done weirder things... like fusing her together with a Robot! ~ Pokeprof

Mmm, she's up there for the Tenchi girls that's for sure, though my personal favorite best girl in the series doesn't exist in this particular Tenchi universe! ~ Pokeprof
I remember watching this anime series back when it came on Tooe Nami And that it was just a fun goofy series with some action thrown into it. Boy was I wrong this story is way convoluted aint any double stories or confusing wait until you get to fate franchise, blaze blue and guilty gear
From what I've seen and been told, Fate's actually got a less complicated story than this... But when I told others I was thinking of doing an episode of Fascinating Fiction about it, the main reply to that was 'Don't'. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMinds Well I say forget those people and do it because I think it would be fun. Cause trust me the world the powers and the characters that are in this universe or the type moon universe is completely crazy
Tenchi is my childhood anime so it's very special to me but 3rd OVA and GXP were huge disappointments. I pretend they and the rest of the OVA's don't even exist and treat Tenchi as an unfinished story lol. I do like the first and third movies and Universe is ok but everything else Techni related has been a huge miss for me. The lore is super convoluted but its insane how much lore was lurking in the shadows of the first two OVA's. I know its not the most effective way to tell a story but uncovering what was really going on in my favorite childhood show has kept my interest in it all these years.
Sometimes, there's just a whole bunch of stuff in the backlog that really can show you just how much more work was put into different series and Tenchi is one of them. I personally agree with you, I think things ending off at the end of the second OVA was probably the best, since everything else is just a ride in insanity. Considering how popular it is on the channel, though.... ~ Pokeprof
A big part of that is having different continuities. The OVA timeline, in Tokyo Movies, and Universe are unrelated to each other.
The story does get wack, but I love it for that goofyness. You just cant take anything too seriously. For instance, One of Tenchis kids will marry the sister of the founder of Juri. Yes, the original founder of Juri, she was froze in stasis on the moon and he frees her and they fall in love eventualy, lol.
I don't mind the goofiness myself, it's just a little overwhelming at times. Especially when things just come out of no where, like Ayeka's and Sasami's mom apparently being this evil destructive force that's against the Goddesses? Like, where does that come from at all? ~ Pokeprof
1 and 2 was peak.
3 was alright.
4 and 5 sucked so much that it got me bored and feeling doubtful that Tenchi will be famous ever again.
The later stuff was why I even said that I felt like apologizing to the direct of GXP, if this is what he had to make sense of and didn't have absolute freedom to do what he wanted. ~ Pokeprof
@@CritiquingMindsAs ridiculous as this sounds may be: i could create an alternative universe that introduces a new main character who does things right and keep the good Tenchi stuff in tact.
For example: Universe and the OVA will merge and GXP will happen but the character will be Possessed by an evil power that Lady Seto has caused him, kinda like a mix of Evil Ryu and Akuma from Street Fighter and it works!
