The Powerful Moments of Neverending Story - Fascinating Fiction
#theneverendingstory #movies #fascinatingfiction
Fascinating Fiction is a scripted video essay series in which Pokeprof goes over various forms of fictional media to give his personal thoughts, analysis and opinions on what brought these characters and stories to life.
It's been a while since we've done a anniversary episode, and with the fortieth anniversary coming up in July, I thought it was time to talk about an old classic: The Neverending Story. It's one of the those movies that stand strong because of some of it's most powerful moments, but does it offer more than that?

    I have watched this to see the thoughts of the author about how moral it is that the MC having sex with all the girls at the same time including mother and daughter mixed up, but didn't see any mention of it. Anyway, this anime is disgusting because of it.

      Harem Animes have been a staple of the genre for ages, so having the main character eventually have relationships with a bunch of a woman is actually pretty part for the course. While the Mom and Daughter bit is a bit less used, it's also not exactly uncommon. And honestly, Tenchi is probably the LEAST bad one out of the bunch when it comes to characters shacking up with each other. ~ Pokeprof

      @@CritiquingMinds Not sure! There are many harem anime out there, yes, but none of them include g*ngb*ng :) They were just kidding around, flirting, etc., but the lines were only crossed in h*ntai, not in anime. It’s just such a disappointment for this kind of classic and nostalgic anime to unnecessarily do that. At least he could have done it with one girl at a time, not all of them together. Imagine kids figure out they are made in a group sex.

    Disney has made a reputation of taking anything good and turning it to shit because "their brand" is stuck in the 1900's. They don't make movies for children anymore because they themselves are the children, afraid to grow up and accept the natural change happening in the world. Whatever makes them more money- that's their goal.

    Saw this as an 80s kid; read the book as a teen. Wolfgang's film was better than the book which was too long. The attic keys, and gamork still haunt me. Casting was perfect, with anna kendrick as Atreyu a standout.

      Haven't read the book, so I couldn't say as to which is better or not. Gmork is an interesting baddy, but he's more scary as a thing to look at instead of actually being a threat. It goes along with a lot of the 'feeling' of moments in the film that doesn't really take the time to deliver on the ideas it's offering. ~ Pokeprof

      @@CritiquingMinds 2:41: This is some good advice when you take into consideration that the "Magnificent" Bartok is different from the "Anastasia" Bartok; as Anastasia is meant to be set in a *Historical* Universe with a Bartok who is more of a theraputic character to a zombified villain, and Bartok the Magnificent is set in a Fairy Tale Universe with a Bartok who was a street performer that goes through a Hero's Journey about Self-Discovery. 3:43: Kelsey Grammar would've made for a good stand-in actor for any Looney Tunes character, alongside multiple actors filling in. If he were to voice any of the mainstay characters, he'd be Wile E. Coyote. With that said, Kelsey Grammar voicing a character who's into theatrics and reciting poetry, as well as having a posh voice and a good selection of costumes, reminds me of the Dog from the Goofy Gophers shorts, with his third appearance being Shakespeare themed: czcams.com/video/q0gIGkSzHjA/video.html 5:55: Don't you mean the entirety of Act 2 is Bartok doing those tasks as part of his Hero's Journey? In fact, all three acts are neatly balanced in narrative: Act 1 has our introduction to Bartok and Zozi, and the kidnapping of Prince Ivan, ending with Bartok being taught from Zozi that self-discovery would help him find his true calling. Act 2 is when Bartok visits Baba Yaga, and goes through a Hero's Journey to see what he can do with the limitations he had to face, while learning the truth that Baba Yaga is just an eccentric grump of a misunderstood woman, who doesn't mind the bad reputation of a baby eater, because she prefers to be left alone. Finally, Act 3 (which you considered as flimsy and weak) has Bartok being wise of his newfound knowledge, and manage to return the Prince back to his rightful place as the true ruler of Russia. Also, while he may not have drank the potion, it did help in using what he learned from the journey to defeat the Dragon Ludmilla; using a Kung Fu Chop to launch a rock boulder into Ludmilla's mouth (like he did with Piloff with the Iron Boulder), juggling rocks to distract Ludmilla, (like he did with Oble), and having Ludmilla die to her fall, because of her lack of wings (which Bartok used as an advantage, after adapting to problem solve the third task by constructing a tower made of pieces of the iron boulder he was tasked to use, along with the crown, to get the feather without flying). So to answer your question: YES, it's better than Anastasia, because Don Bluth had a lot more creative freedom with this story, and the characters are really enjoyable. As for Baba Yaga, I guess this movie (if not, a few reviews on this movie) was the first time I ever heard of Baba Yaga, or the fact they based her character in the narrative on stories where she's a donor, which is actually quite rare in most cases, but I consider Bartok the Magnificent to be a major example for actually bringing this idea to mainstream.

      I was in League for several years. I've read several story lines of my favorite champions, like Orianna and Mordekasier, and I'll say that there are some really fantastic stories and lore within League. I will stick to what I said, though. Especially for older champions? They weren't designed with their lore in mind. They were designed to just have funny little battle quips and be interesting for new players to go and buy. Little, if anything, in the game reflects the deeper meaning the stories have tried to give them. The only one I remember even coming REMOTELY close was Gangplank and that's because they flat out took him out of the game to do that. ~ Pokeprof

    I find it amusing that there are so many highly praised movies that the original authors despise. In some cases, it can makes sense, especially when the film goes against the entire point of the original story; but in others, it can be quite confusing because while things are changed, they often still reach the same point and even make things better in the long run, but because it wasn't done EXACTLY how it was in the original story, the original author (and some nitpicky fans) hate it.

    • @CritiquingMinds
      @CritiquingMinds Před 5 měsíci

      The problem I think more comes from where it's confusing. Kingdom Heart's is confusing because almost all of it's actual story that progresses anything forwards is left at the end of the game and 100% completion. You legit have to go through hours and hours of nothing to move the story forward in a lot of cases. How many of those games have secret endings by now? Tenchi's confusion almost entirely from the fact that they focus on telling a story, and then stop everything dead to go 'Oh hey, this is really important knowledge' and then nine times out of then that isn't important for the viewer. Like, who cares if this person is a royal or not and how they work into the Jirayan bloodline? Does it really matter that you stop everything to explain who married who? It's a lot of Telling the audience for important material than showing us. ~ Pokeprof

    i was always under the impression the show was a sequel to the real world book metropolis (no not the silent movie, the book it is based on). if you look at it from that context the show and especially the ending makes a whole lot more sense. however this does not at all account for the differing themes or "the world is a stage" angle metropolis the book focuses on class struggle with rosewater and his son having a world war fought between each other (his son sympathizing with the lower classes after falling in love with a woman from under the surface cities the themes in the book are around the erosion of humanity and the rise of technology with us becoming more and more like gods with the ending implying that there is a literal god machine built deep in the earth with the ability to rewrite reality- the two rosewaters racing to reach it to end the war presumably in their favor most of the characters in big o exist in the book but with completely different personalities and plots surrounding them for example dorothy being a mechanical replica of the woman rosewater's son fell in love with only now as a seducer of mankind (pretty sure this was a metaphor as technology as a whole seducing mankind- the book is weird lol) when i saw this show when it first aired i assumed it was a continuation of the book and instead of whoever made it to the god machine simply ending the war in a conventional sense they just made everyone lose their memories roger is an inigma to me- im unsure if hes supposed to be a new character or rosewaters son (that would explain dorothy being a love interest) alex rosewater is the hero of the book and son to gordan rosewater his father so the one in the show is either an imposter "tomato" or the real deal with roger assuming the role of hero now- idk lol as you can tell theres still a lot of loose threads and unanswered questions either way- figured id share my two cents- loved the video- nice to see someone showing love to my favorite anime we have come to terms

      Honestly, I had thought that there might be some relation to Metropolis, but I've never touched the original book and I've only been exposed to the Anime based off it, which I both haven't seen in some time and I'm fairly certain didn't have a lot in relation to it. It's actually something I've been meaning to take another look at, if only because that might be something fun to deep dive into. Otherwise, that's one of the biggest draws and the most interesting things about Big O: the unanswered questions. We simply don't know the true intent or ideas behind what was the story they were wanting to tell, and it's very much an instance of us coming up with possible ideas as to what it all might mean. You might very well be right that it could be a continuation of Metropolis and all the theories I've given might be for nothing... but it's likely something we'll never know! Also, I do love the fact that you were able to catch the ending bit there for series ;) ~ Pokeprof

    When I was a youngling this was my favorite movie, I’m a dreamer and to this day still have dreams with this kind of beautiful setting and at the end of it things take a wild and scary turn. Little Nemo is an amazing movie, my father had comic clips left from my grandfather that passed to me. As an adult now I need to watch it again. I love your content and how you broke everything down. -AztechAsesino from Helldivers 2

      Trust me when I say I make sure to look at, read, and even respond to comments on nearly every video. And yes, I WILL cover more Gibli eventually. I just try to do some themed stuff here and there and I'm wanting to make sure that I don't put to many like things together. The question is right now do I talk about my favorite Ghibli film (Princess Mononoke) or do I talk about one of the other films? ~ Pokeprof

    On her own channel, stage combatant/author Jill Bearup has said on several occasions that the duel between Westley and Inigo is the best demonstration of the use of fencing (fighting with swords) to move the plot of a story that she has ever seen. in film.

    The story being a book is also in the original book by William Goldman, so it's also a nod to the structure of the source material.

    • @CritiquingMinds
      @CritiquingMinds Před 6 měsíci

      Indeed! I believe the original novel was done in an excerpt style, since Goldman had designed it to be like he was adapting the story for modern audiences with another author being included in the story. It's definitely not something seen often today! ~ Pokeprof

    @9:27 - This is a lot like what noted comic artist Adam Warren said around the time he was finishing up on his run for Gen13, "A good story can cover for bad art. Excellent art cannot cover for a bad story." I kinda wished poor Andre's health was better. The poor guy had to live in the garage of his house because none of the doors were big enough to accomodate him. We don't think about that sort of thing nowadays, but that was a serious issue for him and his family. He was only 7'4", but he was 6'3" by the time he was 12 years old. Interestingly, one of his grandfathers was actually 7'8" tall in his prime.

    the big o has always been a good anime with gnostic , theological, hints. Roger smith calling angel a fallen angel/666 on the elevator, "A bird whose wings have been plucked will lose all of its feathers, and turn into the creature that it was before it evolved into a bird." venus= morningstar= lucifer= the great architect white and black are a huge contrast, alex evil , and dark roger good. the last episode shows us a platform that angel puts there on purpose when roger drives to stop him from bumping the tyre.

    I don't know, I feel like any movie/tv series/video game/book/etc. that focuses around dreams should always have some nonsensical stuff in it, but I agree that this movie felt like they wanted to play with the dream aspect more than the story aspect.

    also. world-building is not just Arcane. Yep it`s great. But it`s just peak of the iceberg. riot invested A LOT in word-building in last decade. pretty much every region have bunch of characters hardly connected with each other with "gray morale" story with individual point of view and "TRUTH" behind each of them. author mentioned that casually. from my point of view that casualty devalues hard work behind the scene. even Arcane is a 6 years long project. Six fcking years!

    • @CritiquingMinds
      @CritiquingMinds Před 6 měsíci

      Keep in mind that I said, in the episode itself, that the last time I was seriously into League of Legends was when they did the nuke to their world building the last time. I've no idea what they've done or how well they've done it SINCE then because I haven't really looked much into League outside of playing a card game where it's optional to read the lore with the cards. I wouldn't say I'm devaluing the peoples work here, more that my past experience with the company made me be surprised that something like Arcane is as tightly written as it is. Especially considering Victor and Jayce, two characters who've got a wonderful story here were kinda a cartoon villain and hero when I last played the game they're originally from. ~ Pokeprof

    why most reviewers work on their content so hard, but still mention Netflix as something important. Yep, it`s platform that get exclusive on Arcane show-run. But... thats all folks. how does Arcane started? Few talented people that love their work did not fear to came with initiatives to a boss in a company that actually appreciate them and give them a try. and another try. and another in the pursuit of perfection. so everybody have their goals and motivation. and worldwide appreciation achievement finally.

    • @CritiquingMinds
      @CritiquingMinds Před 6 měsíci

      While other formats and types of shows have existed, especially in places not called the USA, the simple fact of the matter is that they were exceedingly rare in comparison and even to this day aren't that common. A show like Arcane, an adult animated series with only eight episodes that run about 40 minutes per episode? That doesn't work in how Networks like Nickelodeon, Disney, CN and others do things. It simply wouldn't survive or even do well because it would get a dead end time slot. HBO got the ball started to be sure when it came on slightly different formats, but it wasn't until Streaming became a thing in part thanks to the growth of Netflix and them doing their own original content that you started to see the shift where you could have smaller, bite sized series of things never allowed elsewhere. And then HBO hit on Game of Thrones and that changed the whole landscape because you now you could claim that streaming services were offering better stuff at a price than the shlock you could find on cable. No company is ever going to do perfectly when it comes to adaptations. For every Sponge-bob you've got, there's going to be a Planet Sheen. And in the case of Bebop, did you really expect them trying to do 'animation, but with people' was going to go anywhere? ~ Pokeprof

The third episode could be pretty traumatic for anyone who is both old enough to grasp what happened and gets emotionally invested easily. I know I would have loved the show at twelve, but at ten it might have been too much.

    Seriously, if anyone hasn't seen it, especially because of the animation - there's character stuff they do with their animation that I can't imagine a live actor presenting so powerfully. And tbh, there's scenes that I wouldn't _want_ to see a live actor do. It's hard enough to watch it in animation. There's one scene in particular that took me a year to get past tearing up every time I even thought about it. As in, for a year, just writing that line would have brought tears to my eyes. And it wasn't the infamous episode 3, as intense as that is. The look of pain and self-loathing, and despair, and just being _done_ and ready for the end in that scene... no, I don't want to ever see that on a real human's face.
