  • In recent times it has become well documented that the old Factory Yamaha program had struggled to produce a winning motorcycle. This was made even more evident in 2021 when Justin Barcia and Aaron Plessinger both left the team, and went on to have much more success. AP explains what it was like riding for a team that was able to make their bikes work.

      @@stephenwilson1012 ??? Do you know much about a factory team? The stock bike is the starting point. They can do a LOT to change the bike.
      STAR has run the "factory" 250 effort for years. They have been kicking ass because they know how to develop a bike. They listen to the riders, and try anything.
      The 450 bike was factory Yamaha...corporate and dysfunctional....up till this year.
      What changed? STAR took over as the "factory" 450 team, and the directly Yamaha team was shut down.
      So how did AP, MS and DF do in 2021 SX? 5,6,7 in the points! Are any of those riders proven winners in 450s? NO. Prior to this year...none of them had EVER had a 450 SX podium (DF- rookie). Each of them had a podium this year, and they finished 5,6,7 in the points! CW, KR, ET, JB all have multiple SX wins...and unless they crashed out...no way the Yam 450 riders were going to beat them. So basically, STAR took the same bike that Factory Yam could do nothing with, and they went absolutely as well as could be expected...5,6,7 in the points. Even with the best bike available...what is the best they were going to finish? 5,6 7. They basically did as good as they could. That means the Yam 450 is a good bike.
      Factory Yamaha was a corporate dysfunctional mess. Everyone was more worried about doing paperwork, justifying budgets, and jockeying for jobs than they were worried about performing.

    The best thing Factory Yamaha ever did was to give their 450 efforts to Star Racing. Great bikes, great suspension, but the factory efforts of Team Yamaha were just not getting the job done for a long time. NOW, just take a look at Tomac!

    Yahama is great the Japanese Manufacturer that still comtinues to produce two strokes and taking both 250 championships this year and years prior. The 450 side of it, just does not seem good at all great riders but the machine is compromised. Hope they get the 450 figured out miss seeing a blue bike in the upfront like how stewart did.

    What happened to AP on the big bikes is pretty general for rookies. They show brilliance then fall down on the chain. Barcia will end up as a short or so on. Podium here or there but never title in the 450s.

    Reed was very vocal about his struggles dealing with factory Yamaha. Before Star took over they just wouldn't listen. They did this shit back when Reed and GL rode in 2000s.
    Yamaha just didn't like to listen. Reed said basically the well is poisoned with how they think and work, and it bugs him still cuz he loves Yamaha. You would think they would listen cause all their 450 riders ever said basically the same thing, but they didn't give a damn and kept doing the same thing. Idiots

    The Japanese manufacturers need to drop the aluminum frames, go back to steel frames;
    Take the benefits of the weight savings and build bikes that can compete in feel and handling.

    It is pretty obvious to everyone that the last almost 10 years of Yamaha's 450 program was absolute shit!! They threw away all their great talent because they couldn't set up a bike. I was sooo stoked when STAR got the call to manage the 450 program and you can see a complete 180.
    You know there was a suit somewhere in that old chain getting a kickback for using certain parts as 'Works' and not letting the mechanics use anything else even though they were losing.

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a Před 3 lety

      Motor is not as important in SX. Handling and balance is critical. Outdoors...you are right...HP in 250s is critical. But in SX HP alone will not win races. But the STAR 250s are good in SX. They know how to Engineer/Develop/Tune a bike.

    There is someone on that Yamaha team, who has a bit of influence and has his idea of bike set and his word is it final, and its the best set up for the Yamaha and the last time he ever raced was in the 80s, a club series on a beat-up cr80 lol, its always politics in a toxic team environment and very detrimental to success and kills the soul of people that work there.

    Bizzare that Yamaha doesn’t cater to each riders needs for the bike. AP likes stiff forks, Barcia like soft front medium in rear with this tire on front.. AP wants this rear break brake setup... etc etc etc. Knowing professional cycling, the pros are catered too: so and so like bars this way , with minimal break feel.. seat height and aft exactly here with these pedals... this guy like double bar tape with this tire pressure... insane Yamaha didn’t have each bike set up to each riders wants.
