  • How to remove and replace the alternator on a 2011 Renault Modus 1.5 DCI
    The general process should be similar for the 1.2 and 1.6 petrol versions, i would expect the alternator to be in a similar location, possibly easier to get to as they would lack the boost pipes of the turbo diesel.
    The modus is compact car with a compact engine bay, this video basically follows what the renault service manual recommends for removing the alternator. It is a bit more work than some other cars but at the same time there is nothing overly difficult along the way.

    Amazing video of a nightmare job! In the old days on my mk1 escort you could open the bonnet undo the 3 bolts on the alternator and it was out lol 20 mins in out if you took your time!

      That is true they were a lot simpler to work on back in the day.
      Although crash regulations, the need to share common parts across multiple models, even brands and styling vs legislation constraints they do have an impact on modern cars.
      Having said that, armed with the service manual knowing the proper process to follow does make it less daunting.

    Excellent video 👍 I have a 2007 clio 1.2 16v 100bhp model are you familiar with this car? The alternator is changing the battery but it seems to struggle when I've got lights, heater etc going. Get a low battery warning sometimes. Never have a problem starting at the moment but don't know how long that will last. Thankfully looking at Haynes manual changing alternator seems a lot more straightforward than this on my car but still a little daunting for me. Question I have is it feasible to change the regulator from the top of engine bay without jacking up the car and taking the bumper off? It may not fix the problem but the I've seen regulator pretty cheap on eBay so thought it'd be worth try if it's just bad brushes

      The TCE engine (turbo petrol)
      its likely handiest on that generaiton of clio, especially the TCE version that you will also need to remove the front bumper, i worked on my uncles TCE and access round the front of the engine was tight.
      The alternator will probably need to come off to change the regulator.

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV @peugeotCitroen2CV ok thanks. Yea it seems like it would be a pain in arse at best from top of engine. There's two pipes in the way and with them removed there's still not much room to get to the alternator. Thankfully it's not a major problem for now.

      Renault in fairness do make good workshop manuals, something PSA could try better to do themselves in fairness.
      Emanuals online will have a manual for your car which should list all the steps to take to get the alternator out, the TCE is a bit tighter for access, basically its like working on the 1.5dci the turbo plumbing is very similar.

    If the timing belt might need doing, would you recommend doing this at the same time as an alternator replacement?

      Hi there,
      If you are in any doubt about a second hand car with no record of a belt change it is best to change it for peace of mind.
      There is a fair wee bit of stripping to get the alternator out so it can help when changing the timing belt

    Hi
    Can I ask please, just today seen on parking belt like this.
    Start to worry can it be from my car. I drive to work early morning all was good.
    Can Ioose it and still drive?

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi there
      Am i correct in saying you are worried about the auxiliary belt looking a bit cracked and old looking?
      If the auxillary belt snaps then you will loose drive to the alternator. If its dark the lights being on will drain the battery within 30 mins and will leave you stranded.
      What age is your car and how many miles are on it, what engine.
      If you are noticing the auxillary belt is old and tired looking you may also need to consider that the timing belt will be due replacement soon. It is the one that if it snaps it will destroy the engine. It may be worth considering having both belts changed soon to ensure more years of reliable motoring.

    I'm stunned what you have to remove to get this job done. What a horrible car! I have a Clio of this era ... I hope it isn't even a 1/4 of the work to change the alternator??! ...

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Před 2 lety

      Ah i didn't mind it, in fairness to Renault it all comes apart exactly as their guide says. Easy enough to remove and not too expensive either. Done an alternator on the odd Merc and said a lot more bad words. At the end of the day its not a job that needs done too often.
      The Clio 3 will have a similar arrangement to the modus, it needs the bumper off, i think there is a smidge more room up front but keeping the bumper in the road will only lead to frustration rather than remove it and make access much easier.

    I have a Modus 05 and i have a Kia Rio 12. I can change both H7 bulbs, change the oil , oil filter, air filter and all spark pluggs under 10 minutes on the Kia. Thts why Modus is crap.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Před rokem

      It takes a bit more time on a modus yes i will accept that, however its all there in the relevant service manuals showing what needs taken off. If a service is done once a year what difference does 10 mins or 1 hour really matter. It is a side effect of the mini mpv body that there is accessibility limitations with the engine bay, something a more conventional hatchback will not suffer from.
      In terms of practicality i found the modus fantastic, really useful shape basically a small compact van with lots of useful cubby spaces and not bad to drive either, nice high up driving position, extremely easy on diesel, and excluding the radiator support bar it was keeping away rust very well. This being the face-lifted one the headlight bulbs are easier changed than the pre facelift. The fuel filter on these is a hassle but having several relatives driving 1.5 DCi renaults im just used to the routine.

      Para cambiar una cadena de distribución en un BMW moderno, tienes que quitar el motor, ¿es realmente tan malo un modo? Sí, es un poco más complicado que en un coche viejo, pero si sigues la guía, sigue siendo algo que la mayoría de la gente puede hacer en casa.

      They do have some bizare processes for working on them, although i never find them hard to work on.
      a few extra steps yes but with the correct workshop manual to hand to detail how jobs should be preformed its not too bad that way. I never really had any worries with the maintenance of this modus. At the end of the day BMW put their timing chains at the back of their 2.0 diesel engine and those do go wrong. The mechanicals of the modus are all fairly good tried and tested and spares are easy enough found.

      A bit like a keyboard with a jammed caps lock button.
      If you are after a cheap, reasonably reliable small car that provides good access, plenty of interior space, low running costs that is safe. Then the modus fits the bill perfectly.
      Yes you will have to spend 2 hours changing its alternator once in 10 years versus possibly 30 minutes on a different car. In the end there was no huge expense spent on this car to get the alternator refurbished.

      @@gordonshumway9463 In fairness the pre facelift cars did have bad access for the headlight bulbs, the facelift did resolve that, its not amazing but can be done. Although by no means does it make all french cars suddenly crap. My own berlingo i drive has a tonne of room in the engine bay to do any job, and is generally quite dependable, same for the 406 before it.
      Renault tend to be a bit more of a challenge to work on, I've got an avantime V6 sitting at the moment that needs the engine removed to change the cambelt, although i just laugh and continue on with the job, still love them for the madness of some of their cars.
