  • 1881 Tin Type of Doc Holliday and Morgan Earp - Titled "The Picnic Image" this Tin Type depicts an Earp family picnic and is engraved verso '4/24/81', which is coincidentally Morgan Earp's thirtieth birthday. Earp can be seen just to the right center with his large mustache, his wife sits just above him, and it appears that all members have taken position around him for the photograph. Doc Holiday sits to the very right and his gracefully fluent hands can be seen with a Gamblers ring on the left pinky. He has aged poorly due to the contraction of Tuberculosis. Towards the middle Holliday's common law wife Kate Horony (Big Nose Kate) sits by his side. The Tin Type includes the original manly photographers sleeve from Erwin Baer, portrait and landscape photographer Prescott, Arizona. The Tin type includes a letter of provenance from the current owner of approx 40 years, and the Official Kent Gibson Forensic report (known for authenticating the Koch Bros. Billy the Kid tin type) that positively identifies Morgan, Doc, and Kate. The general condition of Holliday is an attestation to the tumultuous decline his body suffered at the hands of consumption, and the brotherhood of Holliday to the Earp's attending Morgan's birthday. It is known that Morgan and Doc were close friends, perhaps more so than Wyatt. Six months later Doc stood with Morgan, Virgil and Wyatt in an effort to disarm the McLowery bros. and the Clanton bros. that escalated to what is now known as 'the shootout at the O.K. Corral,' on Oct. 26th, 1881. Morgan was shot twice, and was the first of the Earps to be killed by the Cowboy's vendetta against the lawman less than a year later. The Tin Type possibly depicts Morgan Earp's last birthday, and evidence of his true friendship with dying but deadly Doc Holliday. Measures 4 7/8" x 3 1/2" - Gibson report available upon request
